There are only 2 other players who have won 2 Korean Starcraft 2 Starleagues: Classic and Maru.
However, Rain needed a long period of rest after donating a part of his liver to his father, and made his decision on the day his good friend, Flash, left the scene as well. It was truly an end fitting for the 3 Musketeers.

nooooo... TT so sad to see him retire, but he had an amazing career and his health is obviously more important now. I wish him all the best and good luck for the future.

My guess is that he was going to retire sometime, and this was a good time to do so.
i wouldn't compare 도원결의 to 'three musketeers'. for those ROTK fans out there, it refers to the peach garden oath at the start of the novel between liu bei, guan yu and zhang fei.

Sad day, Rain was a great player. Even as a super standard toss he could get you on your seat. Good luck and best wishes.

Clearly, it isn't. As stated in the op he was thinking about retirement, combined with the medical issue from donation and departure from SKT1. I'm sure the WCS news didn't help his decision.
Even with WCS being racist towards Koreans, not all retirements are going to be about new policies.

Hmmm I guess it would be a lacking thingmajig, but I thought it might have been passable due to the extreme friendship shared in common by the 3 dudes making an oath (die at the same day) (All for one) But that's why I put in the note anyway! Do you have any other suggestion?

then whose the third?
i actually have no idea as i've seldom heard the term being used in relation to flash/rain/mystery third player who's retired.
Bye Rain, thanks for the memories. He was my favorite player after MVP. I haven't watch SC since the Proleague finals and with Rain's retirement and the dumb 2016 WCS system, I think I'm done with this game for good.
I understand now why the legendary progamers retired and some of the others consider to do. Obviously the new WCS system foreced Korean players to do. it's just like a s**t. If SPOTV or GSL doesn't open an additional league for Korean players, the SC2 Scene could be dead, i'm afraid.
Fuck, fuck fuck. I'm so incredibly sad. I'm a big SC2 fan, but unless it's Rain playing I always just root for close, entertaining games. And it's so much more fun and immersing when I'm fully behind a player and really hoping that they win.
As I've said in the other threads, huge props to him for being such a great dude all around. Was known as an amazing guy before he donated part of his liver, and this just cements his legacy as a person. Despite how selfishly sad I am that I won't be able to watch him play anymore, I hope he enjoys his rest and wish he finds major success in whatever he chooses next.
Who am I going to root for now :S Been an ultimate Rain fanboy ever since he showed up on the SC2 scene and established himself as the best and most successful KeSPA player during 2012. I remember his insane double royal road run in the 2012 GSL and OSL - winning the OSL and barely losing in the GSL semifinals 3-2 to Mvp.
I've watched him for so long, spent so many hours studying VODs and replays...he was my favourite player to learn from. I can't believe I'll never watch him play again.

My guess is that the reporter thought it to be fitting, as part of the oath was somewhere along the lines of 'although we were born at different times, we shall die all together' So the third could be Caster Chae? xD "Friends of Flash"

I am sure the wcs overhaul will frustrates the koreans like rain who was very active in the foreigner scene. I wouldn't guess that it has no impact in many korean pros.

Hopefully there is no third. Don't want another big name retiring it's not like Liu Bei and co actually died on the same day anyway!
Sad to see such a great player leave the scene, but you have to admit he is going out in style. Ending at the top of your game is a good way to go. Good luck to Rain!
Is he the only player to ever win a GSL while on a foreign team (i.e. without the benefit of Korean team house practice)? I wonder if that added to the degree of difficulty of his win at all.

Don't you think, that donating parts of his liver has a bigger impact on Rain than WCS format changes? Especially, since he is someone who is good enough to stay relevant in the korean leagues?
Anyway, best of luck and a good recovery to him and his father, hope to see him again at some point.
No surprise. I would write something, what I think about Blizzard's new system, but then I would be banned forever from TL, so I will not do it. More retirements expected.
At least I hope, Rotti will not join the celebrations of other casters about the new great WCS system, after his idol retired.

OMG Rain! I didn't think it would end up coming to this. I suppose it had to come eventually but damn. Rain was the first person that I considered myself a fan of and seeing him succeed constantly was inspiring and exciting for me. He really got me into Korean starcraft, especially proleague, and to see him go is very sad indeed.
Best of luck to the rest of whatever you pursue in life. It's been a blast!~

Oh, sorry, you are right, Flash, MMA, Rain, the others in the next 2 weeks, they of course retire because of medical reasons. Or because of old age.

This particular retirement is because of the operation Rain went through to donate part of his liver. He is physically incapable to continuing, it has nothing to do with the new WCS system.

All I could think of at the moment, if anyone else thinks of more please post it!
Rain is the only player to ever be worth 11 pts in FPL
Ah yes, I had forgotten about that one, thanks.
- Rain is also the only player to win GSL Code S while on a foreign team.
Don't know how I forgot about that one, it's a pretty remarkable achievement if you really think about it. Winning Code S despite not living in a team house for almost a year? Crazy. Rain and Parting are really one (well, two) of a kind.
Maru won OSL on Prime. Innovation did most of his 2014 GSL run while on Acer and was only on SKT a week before the finals.
True, but in both of those cases they lived in team houses (as far as I know). While on mYi and while winning GSL I don't believe Rain was living in a team house, and I think most agree that the team house environment is very, very helpful, especially for big matches like OSL/GSL finals.
And even though Innovation was only on SKT for a week before his GSL, he still had the benefit of that week of preparation in a team house with everybody on the team focused on helping you prepare for your match, coaches giving advice, and coaches/teammates being at the studio during the match, watching the games live, and going in your booth to calm you down, walk through the game with you, give advice on what was done wrong/how to do it better, give build order suggestions for the next set, etc.
I didn't even think about what will happen to Jaedong.
Where is he staying these days? Does he have enough quality training partners right now? Will EG find a Proleague team for him? Will EG and JD stay with each other?
This must be a hard decision for JD. I hope he finds the best solution for him.

On Topic: MAN THIS SUCKS! Rain is legit, no lie, one of my most favorite SC2 players ever! I cannot believe that when I talked to him during BlizzCon opening weekend, that that was going to be the last time I would get to talk to him within the eSports scene...
Farewell Rain... You will be heavily missed. Thank you for everything! Your rest is well deserved.
A true champion, in every meaning possible. So long by.Sun
P.S.: and to all the silly guys who blame WCS for his retirement, go see people who donated an organ for others for a change. You can live on with 1 kidney but there is a reason you got 2 in the first place...
EDIT: ops confused liver and kidney but you get the idea.

You can read the info at the beginning of the thread. There are obviously several reasons. Rain is a great guy. And if you think about his situation, this seems to be a logical solution. I do not know, if he decided differently if any of the reasons was different. Maybe not. Maybe yes. But now, there were just too many complications in one moment.
Thanks Rain for all the great games you have shown us.You have been and still are an amazing player, showing the world that Protoss doesn't have to cheese or trick its way to a victory.
I wish you all the best, and hope you return back to the game in the future
In a sea of blink and lazer bullshit, he truly stood out, as one of a few, to bring the game to another level. It feels like he made protoss grow up, like a wise father figure. Weird that he shouldn't lead the pack anymore. But if your health doesn't allow for such a demanding career, you have to find something else.
Kind of ridiculous to see how people try to read something into his health reasons to satisfy their thirst for drama.
Bye, rain, you'll always be the smoothest criminal to ever touch the great book of bullshit. Promethoss fighting!
I don't really know what impact donating a part of your liver has but I believe that if there were an incentive for him to continue as a progamer he could rest a few weeks/months and then come back. But why should you come back to a scene where you can only participate in four tournaments a year, are banned from proleague as well as from foreign tournaments? Him and PartinG got fucked the most by this change I don't think the guy that got fucked the most retiring a few days after the wcs announcement is a coincidence.
wcs changing supposedly for the worse isnt a real excuse to give up or retire. the players aren't dogs who accept everything you give them (or take away).
if they wanted to change something, they would stand up and do it. it's like being given poor work circumstances by their employer. it's quite a bit different for spectators, though it seems.
i hate to see people affhiliate retirement (really long drawn out decisions) to a tournament league through a one-liner, blaming it.

But we can still tie it to being that LOTV sucks and pros saw it miles ago since beta and they all made the decision to do so regarding the WCS change
This is saddening, he had his health issues though and since his career is in such a strange place its a good choice I think. I mean after his choice to leave SKT didn't really get him rolling into winning tons of foreign tournaments (which he was probably aiming for) he has probably been considering what to do. At the moment with wcs circuit getting regionlocked he has only 2 choices, either run back with his tail between his legs to the team he left or try and get a new team that doesn't mind that he can't play in proleague aka second rate/nonexistent team.
He is really a good son and what he did for his dad is very generous. Rain is a noble person. I wish him and his dad to be as healthy as possible and to recover very fast. Good luck for your rest of your life man
some of the people in this thread are monkeys. trying to criticize his reasoning or project wcs drama onto this is ugly and sad. the dude just had a serious medical operation to save his father's life, you think maybe that's something that could inspire people to make a change in life? like stop playing video games for a living? adds up fine to me.
gg rain, normally it's not often i care too much about a retirement, but in this case he was still a truly fantastic and exciting player and a good dude as well
Okay these are actually terrible news for me. I did not care about Flash and I do not care about MMA but Rain leaving is a big deal. He was the only player I always rooted for. He had such a beautiful playstyle and something that made him really likeable.
As for the discussion about his reasons, I believe that donating a part of his liver might actually not be the only reason. I think that the game has changed too much with LotV and while some people like the changes, some other (including me) don't. It's just too far away from SCII has been in the past years. And I expect more Koreans to retire in the next months...
Liver donation severely impacts the immune system and the whole organism. This is because the liver is the organ that is responsible for the detoxification and metabolisation of waste products in the blood, as well as it's a major supplier of enzymes. Not to mention he has had an abdominal surgery with general anesthesia which might not seem like a big thing but it actually is because there is a small chance that one might not wake up from it and there is no way of knowing if it will be you. So it's an emotional shock too. And then, the surgery itself requires tons of rest and medications, even without losing 1/3 of your liver. Rain is a true hero that has sacrifices his health and wellbeing for months to come in order for his dad to be better. We can all learn and take a lot from him. Even if I didn't like his play in HOTS (but I did) I am in awe of him. So I totally understand his reasoning to retire. Maybe he didn't like LOTV too, who knows?

the new wcs system wasnt even released at the time when rain had his interview? Kespa obviously knew about it, but did the players?
This is really really sad. I wonder if LotV wasnt fun for him at all or if missing the qualifiers for gsl/ssl had something to do with it. One of the best sc2 players ever and imho the best protoss player (not because he won as much as hero or sOs but because he did show how other styles than high risk /coinflip styles were viable as protoss).
I wish rain the best of luck with everything in the future.

I find it amazing that liver donations are even possible. I just doesn't seem reasonable that you can cut off half a liver and give it to another person and that works out just fine after a while
Kespa obviously knew about it, but did the players?
Obviously they knew, Stats spit the beans in his interview that he wants to win since there are only 2 seasons of SSL and that was before Blizzard announce the WCS info.
Hmm that is unfortunate: at the current state of toss he would have won many tournaments the next couple of months. So my favorite Terran: retired Favorite Toss: retired If Jaedong retires as well now, I can really stop watching SC2

Thanks for the post! I have boldened the important part. To clear things up further: Donating your liver is nothing like donating a kidney which leaves you harmstrung for the rest of your life. The actual risk lies in the operation itself. Rain is fine. His liver will fully regenerate itself within weeks, two months max, with no repercussions whatsoever. His retirement isn't forced by a medical condition! The OP clearly states that he thought about his retirement as far back as leaving SKT and tbh you could see it in his his play during this last year on mYi as well. He even said this might have been his last chance after his GSL triumph. I think it's fair to say though that the WCS changes 'narrowed his options', to be polite.
I saw it coming yet I am very sad now that it's official. gg Rain

I'm pretty sure the players knew by the SSL qualifiers at least, because Stats kinda spilled the beans on his interview by saying he will try his best since there were only two seasons now. Since there are only 2 seasons, and Rain has to skip one for healing, there is only a slim chance for him to make it into Blizzcon, and he can't play Proleague unless he gets into SKT1.... Pretty sure these were some good reasons for him to select retirement over waiting 2-3 months for a comeback.
I find it amazing that liver donations are even possible.
It's not that simple. The donor and the recipient must be genetically close and even then there is always the chance that the recipient's immune system will just fail to recognize the new organ as "its own" and will attack it with immune cells. Recipients are given immune-suppressive medications for a long time, sometimes all their life. It is very useful when the donor is a close relative but even then it's risky with no guarantee for success. So what Rain did for his dad was undergo general anesthesia, risking his own life (like 3 from 1000 ppl die from general aneshesia I think, might be 2) for absolutely no guarantee of success or the knowledge that his dad might actually improve his condition. It's amazing what love towards humans can make us do. I mean, I'd do the same for my daughter, no questions asked, like kill me on the spot, take whatever you want from me to save her life, let's go, I don't care if I am in pain, just make sure she doesn't suffer. Not for my dad though. I've never felt him that close and I am truly amazed by the strength of their father and son bond.
I am sorry if this is too much spam, I didn't mean to, words just came into my mind.
Always appreciated Rain as one of my favorite players from the scummiest race
Another sad bit of news, but all things considered, it's not like we should have been surprised more and more long-time Starcraft icons would choose this time to leave the game given the state of the scene and the introduction what basically feels like a completely new game. Kind of wonder who might be "next"
There are only 2 other players who have won 2 Korean Starcraft 2 Starleagues: Classic and Maru.
Kind of surprising statistic that actually. A testament to how much of a true champion he was. Lotta respect for Rain, even when he seemed to struggle and slump for a bit he would bounce back in a huge way. Wish him the best, seemed like an extremely nice and humble guy as well.

Not only is Rain one of only 3 players (Classic and Maru) to win 2 Starcraft 2 Starleagues, he was EXTREMELY close to winning 3. In SSL Season 3, he barely lost to herO 3-4 in the semifinals (damn PvP), and if game 7 had gone the other way, Rain would have faced ByuL in the finals - the same ByuL who he crushed 4-1 in the GSL Season 2 finals.
To be honest, I dont understand that retirement at all, unless there other personal reasons not mentioned. Rain won GSL this year and other championships. Rain is basicly at the peak of his career and without question one of the very best in sc2 currently. If he has medical issues now that prevent him from being the best, he should just take some time to recover and come back, it does not make sense to quit for good.

Dunno, maybe Rain's bored of winning tournaments. Rain was was always so good that he may believe that this is the time to do it anyways.

He donated part of his liver to his dad.. Said it was hard for him to play games. Maybe he will come back after a long rest, I wouldnt be surprised. But donating part of your liver sounds like a good reason to retire for a bit
Another talented kid goes. Rain was a raising BW star when SC2 hit the market. He was one of the few ones who managed to transfer his drive to a new game. Liver or other reasons, I feel that it is strange to retire forever because of temporary health issues, but I am not in his shoes, what do I know. The sad thing is, with each retirement of such a talented player SC2 becomes less and less entertaining (with all respect but HSC was painful to watch). Good luck Rain and if you ever have interest come and play some afreeca for us
TL should make a writeup for Rain D: "I was planning to retire, but I decided to win a GSL instead."
Easily one of the most influential Protoss in the game, and I'm sure the writers know a lot more about Rain than most of us do, which would make this writeup really nice...
I remember when Rain transitioned over and took GSL by surprise due to his play overall. He was always pretty solid though I do remember him losing some PvT to a terran who dropped him several times with speedvacs lol. Overall, he had quite the career in SCII. It's understandable that he'll take a long break or in this case, retire after such an operation and potentially lost passion for the game.

As far as I know he did not retire because of the liver:
"...My retirement has nothing to do with the operation. Actually, I was supposed to retire right after I left T1. However, mYi gave me a good offer. So I thought that I`d stay one more year for a foreign team, as a new experience. All of these had been planned before Flash decided his retirement."

Pleased, it is finally out that he is not retiring because of the operation. You can win olympic games with a transplanted liver.
But he was in a difficult situation, not being allowed to play in Proleague, planning to retire, his friends were retiring, the game was new and he would need to learn the skills again ... He might have wanted to stay in a foreign team one year more, but what purpose would it have after being banned from international competitions?

BigFan should update his post to prevent confusion. He's playing BW as the opponent of streamers i.e. he hasn't streamed himself (yet, according to Korean websites.) So yes, he has appeared in Afreeca but not streaming yet.
its odd that a player with such succes in sc2 goes streaming bw. Is it just because they all adore playing sc1 more or is it because its not possible to do the same thing (afreeca bj) with sc2?

Most likely yes. If they really enjoyed sc2 as a game, they would keep playing.
Actually, i think most pro gamers dont even like sc2 as a game really. They play sc2 because its only 1v1 game with real esport and its kinda okay game.
I don't remember anyone streaming sc2 on afreeca, just isn't lucrative on a purely korean market compared to twitch where you'd get more viewers all over the world especially since SC2 is more popular outside korea.
Rain is someone who worked hard to become a progamer playing BW, he became a progamer to play BW, its his roots regardless of what success hes made as an SC2 player.
All the bw fanatics coming here and explaining (again) how noone could ever enjoy playing sc2 when he played BW before. It's hilarious really.
I bet him streaming BW (which isn't even confirmed that it's him afaik?) has nothing to do with BW being way more lucrative on afreeca. Srsly this level of stupidity is making me angry every single time

I never said that he didn't enjoy playing SC2, if it was for some reason even implied then let me set it straight, his best moments of his career has been playing SC2, I'm sure his best memories will also be of the same time, doubt anyone is arguing otherwise. what I'm saying is simply this, he trained to become a BW progamer, he was already a progamer when he started SC2.

You forgot the "why is this posted in the sc2 section? this should be moved to bw!"
I totally agree with you. I'm determined to follow Flash if he goes to BW, but it's gonna be hard to participate in the LR threads :'(

I too will watch Rain on afreeca when he starts streaming, it will be interesting to watch. But all these stupid remarks of BW guys every single time something like this happens? Srsly? It is so fucking childish and just proves the notion most sc2 people have of bw (people).

Lol why?
I've spent like 10 minutes writing and erasing text trying to explain it, but I can't find the right expressions (I suck at English), and I don't wanna start and argument. In short: it will feel bad having to read all those comments (those that Viper mentioned) on a regular basis and the general negative tone when talking about SC2.
I don't know if you've spent much time in the BW section but most of us don't care/are indifferent about SC2 in general outside of a few people making the odd comment or two about a person playing sc2
God damn it viper you make us all out to be angry and bitter people.
oh man there is no one like him, he had such a unique approach to the game, im gonna miss him, really sad to see him go, best of luck to you Rain in your future endeavors

You seem okay but the BW section in general does seem super salty and bitter to me. Not saying everyone is like that but so many that it becomes the general impression. And then you get a lot of these bitter interactions in the other forums here, in /r/starcraft etc. Sad really...
This has been even reflected in the english casting for VANT starleague.
they are past BW player of course people have right to say "welcome back to bw" or "they prefer bw to sc2". if say Parting retire nobody will go to thread and say he join BW, never.
do not know why sc2 fan are so triggered and coming with stupid rants like "NO BROOD WAR, ONLY SC2 GOOD" rant. so funny and ignorant.
they bring that crap childish ignorant yet pretend know-it-all (think they know how to balance game they themselves never play) attitude everywhere of course people get angry. sc2 are the real trollers

I bet him streaming BW (which isn't even confirmed that it's him afaik?) has nothing to do with BW being way more lucrative on afreeca. Srsly this level of stupidity is making me angry every single time
and we will always have people like you viper. The parallelism is uncanny. At the end of the day you cannot force people to keep playing a game they just don't care to play anymore and you hear it from foreigners all the time when they say it's a job, which it should be and many of them just lose the passion or it just doesn't become fun anymore where there are still a lot of guys who get enjoyment out of BW even when they were working in a sweat shop environment.
Wow. Hit's me right in the feels. If there was any player i ever called a favourite, it was him. His name, and play style resonated with me a ton. Haven't played for a while, and watch sporadically, but this is tough. Good Luck Rain!
