Welcome this month's top 50 streamers list.

In terms of viewer numbers, this will most likely be the most boring thread yet. Sure, the LotV beta just started a few days ago, but in these threads we're looking at the viewer numbers for the previous month, and March had a distinct lack of LotV streams, as it turns out.

That doesn't mean that March wasn't without a good deal of excitement. Unfortunately, it was the non-fun kind, and as the guy ranking streamers by their viewer numbers I'm forced to make a statement, as much as I'd like to just ignore past drama and move on.

I have defended accusations of viewbotting against Winter in the past, and the whole thing leaves me scratching my head to this day. If he is a viewbotter, what did he gain from (supposedly) paying hundreds of dollars for months on end? Even with a sponsorship and some legit subscriptions, I doubt he'd end up making much money. If he is not a viewbotter, how can all the circumstantial evidence to the contrary be explained?

Ultimately, I don't know. And while I'm not one to partake in angry mobs that can form at certain other places, the circumstantial evidence that was provided was convincing enough to de-feature Winter here on teamliquid, and I feel compelled to agree with the official reasoning:
We recognise that Winter, as a direct consequence of being boosted by viewbotting services, has attracted a legitimate viewerbase and even some legitimate subscribers. But it is impossible for us to measure the strength of that legitimate viewership in relation to our normal featuring standards while viewbotting continues on Winter's channel.

As such, I have removed Winter from the current top 50 lists.

For full disclosure, I have also removed (or never included, rather) IMBACoach, who has been viewbotting quite blatantly in the past few weeks. He has recently been banned from twitch, making his viewbotting official, so to speak. Twitch did not take any action against Winter, it should be noted.

Anyhow, off to the lists!

Huh? What's this?

For those of you who don't already know what this is about: I'm gathering various data (viewers, game, events, etc.) from all the streams that are presented on teamliquid.net (those that you can in the sidebar to your right) and use that data to produce the pretty tables and graphs you see below. The tables only contain SC2 players (that is, streams of people playing games of Starcraft 2) and not casters, teams or other streams. The tables also only contain Starcraft 2 related activities. So, for instance when CatZ is streaming Dota2, it will not be taken into account.

The data I gather is then turned into the tables you see below. One is sorted by the average viewers, the other is sorted by the average viewers times the hours streamed. The latter table favors those that stream a lot, while the former table favors popular streamers regardless of how much they stream. Either ranking has its advantages and disadvantages, and thus I present both.

For either table, I have a minimum required stream time of 5 hours to be included in the list.

The list

Due to space limitations, I have to shorten the headers and leave some data out of the tables presented here. You can get the full tables from the links below.
The headers aren't as clear as I'd like them to be thanks to this, so here's a quick explanation, just in case: "Viewers" denotes the average viewers in the given month. "Hours" are the hours played. "Place diff" and "Viewer diff" are the place and viewer differences compared to last month.

Also, the HTML version linked beneath the images has some more information that I had to leave out due to space limitation, most notably the featured status of the players.

Now, Without further ado, here's this month's tables:

Stray observations and musings

  • Naniwa remains on the #1 spot in the average viewers category, despite losing a good amount of viewers, again. Congrats!
  • For the first time in who knows how many months, the #1 spot in the viewerhour category is not one of the usual suspects. Congrats, RotterdaM!
  • For what it's worth, Winter had an average of 1729 viewers last month, streaming 235.25 hours. That would have put him at the #2 spot in the viewers category, and the #1 spot in the viewerhours category.
  • Notable streamers who made it to last month's list, but did not make it this month or who did not stream at all: Destiny, Jaedong, Taeja
  • If you find any mistakes or errors in the lists, please do let me know, especially concerning team changes or players that you are absolutely sure should be on the lists, but are not.

The big picture

(The actual numbers are not important, it's the ratio between month that's important.)

Note that these are player streams only.

Who cares? We're all waiting to see how this graph will look like next months, right?

WCS/GSL

Close to 30.000 viewers on average for the GSL finals. Not bad.

Proleague

That's all for this month. Hope you guys enjoyed, as always. Any kind of feedback is always welcome!

You should make a list of streamers per hours streamed also, not just hours*viewers.
Since that creates an even bigger monopoly position for the already popular streamers.
If you add one with just hours streamed, unknown full time streamers would get more exposure.

It's nice to see the dedicated streamers once again at the top of the list (the real one V*H), tho, there's a little problem with HTOMario being listed because we know why.

Let's do a little correcting there

"For what it's worth, Winter had an average of 29 actual viewers and 1700 viewbots last month, streaming 235.25 hours. That would have put him nowhere in the viewers category, and the #1 spot in the viewerhours category."

Viewbotting is bad, viewbotting is cheap(500v/200$/1y), viewbotting is sneaky(benefactor/victim). There is not much else to say.

Thank you so much for this conti. I was wondering if you could remove winter's stats starting from April since it seems that's when he started view botting

Winter and ImbaCoaching removed you'd have to be naive to believe no one else ever has view-botted in the past few years to pump up their Twitch.tv #s.

Twitch wants their numbers to look as high as possible so they do nothing about view-boting.
this makes it difficult to take any viewer #s Twitch produces seriously.
