As for Sonic, there's a phrase I remember Destiny saying on one of the last (possibly the last?) episode of Unfiltered, where he said that he believes esports are sustainable when someone comes in not for passion, but only for profit, and he can leave satisfied. This is one of those rare occasions where he said something that made sense. We know where Sonic started making his venture into esports. We know where he expended most of his energy. If he's coming on board, I believe Korean SC2 may be coming to that point of clear sustainability. Isn't Sonic the prime example of someone coming in primarily for passion and not for profit? Not in SC2, he isn't. Far from it. How so? I haven't seen him say a lot of negative stuff about SCII, maybe he is like many people me included that enjoy both BW and SCII (and maybe like one more game, BW more than the other), the fact that he is super passionate and loves BroodWar, and singlehandedly kept it alive till OGN picked it up again, doesn't mean that he somehow hates/dislikes SC2. Disliking SC2 and not having passion for it are very different things. I would think (and I am in no way purporting to know the actual thought process of a major business leader) that he was mostly ambivalent about it in the past, and now sees a financial opportunity with the recent investment in the game in Korea. Seeing that other esports investments, such as League, worked out for him, he went ahead and decided to put Sbenu on the board in SC2 as well.

Ohh I aggree completely with this, what I was talking about was the: "Far from it." part, which implies that its basically the opposite (if my english isn't even worse than I thought haha)

This is more than a little bit disappointing. I wonder how the Korean BW community will react.

Yeah. I mean, I'm fully aware that he does not owe the BW community anything, while we owe him almost everything (at least as far as the last few years are concerned). But if he wanted to expand, I would have hoped that he would pour his resources into a game that doesn't compete with BW, and in particular that he wouldn't help SC2 gain any more of a foothold in Korea than it already has.

what, so you're afraid of competition?
BW is literally jesus, except it took 3 years not 3 days.
you can't touch jesus.

I don't see this decision as a matter of BW vs SC2 I see it as support of a scene that Sonic wants to support because it has a lot of ex-BW pros and a sequel to BW. Sonic is doing a great thing for everyone and having this divisive mindset that "Sonic isn't helping BW as much as he could, SC2 shouldn't get help" isn't good. Plus with this I'm certain more people will tune into SSLXI because they see the Sonic and Sbenu sponsorship of GSL.

Great news, this means I can keep using my sig without looking obsolete!
Joke aside tho, happy for JYP

I assume the reason why Sbenu is doing this is because they want to expose their product to their target audience more. Probably no other reason

This is the SC2 part of the forum and I don't want to cause trouble, which is why I stick to the BW parts 99.9% of the time. But this "it's not the time for a divisive mindset" rhetoric has been pushed on us since the earliest days of SC2, while everything we had (players, teams, leagues, sponsorships) was taken away by any means available.
Like I said, Sonic owes us nothing, but now that we have a good thing going again, to a great extent due to him, it is painful to see him move on.

but he is not moving on? He is just sponsoring sc2 as well. And again, he is probably doing that because it makes sense for his brand and business.

If you are implying by "moving on" that Sonic is quitting SSL or reducing his prize money for SSLXI I don't really know what is prompting you to think that. Okay, you can hide in BW and ignore SC2 all you want but denying that SC2 was the future in 2010 and BW was fading is denying what is inevitable. If you really can't see the benefit in both sides supporting each other and instead think SC2 is leeching off BW or whatever, I can't do much to change that mindset but it's not helping either side. BW elitism turned off a lot of people from the game or being involved but you can at least tolerate that SC2 was a natural transition for so many BW pros.
For the record I've been watching more BW than SC2 lately and find it far more entertaining, but it doesn't mean I won't see this as a bad thing but rather a unification of a scene that only benefits from this.
