It seems that in practice, Sonic is just sponsoring Blizzard, because the net effect is that Blizzard will have to pay less money. Which is quite funny given that Blizzard has screwed Sonic over in the past - shows that this guy has quite the style. Production costs and crew salaries are pretty expensive, I imagine sponsorship money goes to that instead of the prize pool that's already paid out by blizzard.

Mr. Chae left GOM because he got a better offer from Afreeca, who are currently trying to expand to the western market. As for Sonic, there's a phrase I remember Destiny saying on one of the last (possibly the last?) episode of Unfiltered, where he said that he believes esports are sustainable when someone comes in not for passion, but only for profit, and he can leave satisfied. This is one of those rare occasions where he said something that made sense. We know where Sonic started making his venture into esports. We know where he expended most of his energy. If he's coming on board, I believe Korean SC2 may be coming to that point of clear sustainability.

So because he's a dedicated BW fan he's not allowed to also enjoy SC2?

I have to wonder how many people in the Brood War forums are having an aneurysm about this very announcement right now.

Are you personally close to Sonic and know what he precisely thinks about SC2? It is very likely that he prefers Brood War, but nothing says that he considers SC2 to be only a business investment. Additionally, from a purely "profit" standpoint, I somehow doubt that an eSport which is maybe facing one match-fixing (Pinnacle voided bets) and one betting-manipulation (talking about the olimoley thing here), and which is already way less popular than other eSports is a good eSport to invest into.
