Welcome this month's top 50 streamers list.

Update: Turns out my script did not differentiate between Rain and Rain. It does now, and I updated the rankings accordingly. Sorry, Rains.

Table of contents
  • Huh? What's this?
  • Top 50 streamers in January 2015
    • Sorted by avg. viewer
    • Sorted by avg. viewer * hours streamed
    • Stray observations and musings
  • The big picture
  • WCS/GSL
  • Proleague
  • Older entries

Huh? What's this?

For those of you who don't already know what this is about: I'm gathering various data (viewers, game, events, etc.) from all the streams that are presented on teamliquid.net (those that you can in the sidebar to your right) and use that data to produce the pretty tables and graphs you see below. The tables only contain SC2 players (that is, streams of people playing games of Starcraft 2) and not casters, teams or other streams. The tables also only contain Starcraft 2 related activities. So, for instance when CatZ is streaming Dota2, it will not be taken into account.

The data I gather is then turned into the tables you see below. One is sorted by the average viewers, the other is sorted by the average viewers times the hours streamed. The latter table favors those that stream a lot, while the former table favors popular streamers regardless of how much they stream. Either ranking has its advantages and disadvantages, and thus I present both.

For either table, I have a minimum required stream time of 5 hours to be included in the list.

The list

Due to space limitations, I have to shorten the headers and leave some data out of the tables presented here. You can get the full tables from the links below.
The headers aren't as clear as I'd like them to be thanks to this, so here's a quick explanation, just in case: "Viewers" denotes the average viewers in the given month. "Hours" are the hours played. "Place diff" and "Viewer diff" are the place and viewer differences compared to last month.

Also, the HTML version linked beneath the images has some more information that I had to leave out due to space limitation, most notably the featured status of the players.

Now, Without further ado, here's this month's tables:

Stray observations and musings

  • Did you hear that Naniwa has been streaming again? Apparently so, since he's easily gained the #1 spot in the average viewers category last month. Congrats!
  • While his average viewer numbers are a bit more shaky lately, Winter remains the number one when it comes to pure viewerhours. He did lose a good number of those, however, and the #2, Destiny, did gain a good bit. If the trend continues, Winter might be dethroned yet after all.
  • Notable streamers who made it to last month's list, but did not make it this month or who did not stream at all: Grubby (), Parting, Soulkey.
  • If you find any mistakes or errors in the lists, please do let me know, especially concerning team changes or players that you are absolutely sure should be on the lists, but are not.

The big picture

(The actual numbers are not important, it's the ratio between month that's important.)

Note that these are player streams only.

Not a whole lot of change compared to the previous month, so not a whole lot to say.

Oh, and just for desrow <3:

This graph shows all SC2 streams, regardless of whether they are player streams, event streams or caster streams. I tend not to show this one because, thanks to some major events not delivering live viewership numbers (like MLG), it can be somewhat misleading. So do take this graph with a grain of salt, please.

That being said, with WCS picking up and steadily getting into premier territory, we should see the numbers going up again in the coming month.

WCS/GSL

The usual ranking of EU > NA > KR remains untouched, but with the new WCS season and changes, viewership for the different regions seems to come closer and closer together.

Proleague

Quite steady numbers for Proleague. Sweet.

That's all for this month. Hope you guys enjoyed, as always. Any kind of feedback is always welcome!

Quite possible. I only poll the viewer numbers every 15 minutes, so he might have more viewers in any given 14 minute window and I'd miss it.

Looks like spending over a week not commentating to work for GM had a pretty dramatic impact on numbers (and ofc streaming on NVIDIA channel regularly), hope to bring it back up towards LOTV

Uuuh that overall stream graphs is pretty sad ..
After the huge drop of viewers for players stream and small cup streams in 2012/2013, end 2013 and 2014 saw a huge drop of viewers for premier tourneys as well... Hope sc2 viwership can somewhat stabilize at a not too low point

I'm refreshing, but the images are still not showing up. Is that the kind of thing I should file a bug report over?

Well, I guess it's a good sign that the current viewer number hasn't really dropped much since last year, but still it hasn't grown.

Hmm, the images seem just fine over here. Maybe dropbox is blocked from your side?

Individual stream numbers went down slightly from last month, and are still higher than March-November of 2014.

I don't wanna start any debate, but can someone explain why people are watching winter? I mean he's not particularly good at the game (although not horrendous or anything) he's not a funny character like destiny can be, and he doesn't seem to whine when he lose

what's the appeal?

Ok, I'll take the bait. I find it hard to believe that Twitch would write checks every month to someone with phantom viewers. I would think by now that they would have the algorithms and detection methods in place to detect constant view botting. Could you maybe get away with it once or twice here and there? Sure, but not on a consistent basis. Call me naive, if you will, but that's just my 0.02.

On a side note, let's assume every Winter viewer is real. What is the appeal of watching a master league player intentionally humiliate players far below his skill level? Winter can play the game however he wants, I just don't get the attraction for all that watch him. Maybe I'm missing something.

Ok, the viewbot idea is kinda silly. But you have to wonder why a chat why 3K has 10x less activity then let's say Huk's stream when he has 300 viewers.

No clue as to why someone would watch Winter either
