A lot of people are going to be unhappy with this name =/
Yeah. Wasn't it going to be SIL (Starcraft II Individual League)? I remember reading that somewhere on the forums. Edit: Saw it here. It's also called SIL on liquipedia.
Yeah weird to name it SSL :/ But hyped to watch it! Hopefully we will see not too many upsets in the qualifiers, i don't want to see a league where half the players don't really belong there...

Or SSL could rename itself now that it's on OGN, maybe something like OBS (OGN Broodwar Starleague)
why? the SSL has been running for 9 seasons now, and the last 3 were pretty big with decently large finals venue and now the coming season is gonna be on OGN.
if anything it should be SPOTV who should rename their league.
Besides we can't call it an OSL, its Sonic's league being hosted on OGN by Sonic, not an OGN league sponsored by sonic, theres a huge difference.

SPOTV Starcraft 2 Starleague, the SSSL SPOTV Starcraft 2 Starcraft League SPOTV Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm Starcraft League, SSC2HotSSL And for when LotV gets released in the middle of a season: SPOTV Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm & Legacy of the Void Hybrid Starcraft League, SSC2HotS&LotVHSL
I think it's a fine name. Does it really even matter that it shares an acronym with Sonic's BW league? Its a funny coincidence but that's about it. Plus, now that its on OGN, how do we know that the Sonic Starleague will even keep the same name for more than another season or two?
Does that mean four days of Korean Starcraft a week? I'm not sure if I'm ready for this d: And wait, SSL? I feel like I've seen this acronym before... (;

I might have to finally readjuct my sleep schedule to watch all this korean starcraft.
Getting up at 3/4am to watch koreans play a video game... totally normal, right? that's what well adjusted people do I think

I explained on the previous page, its not an OGN league, its only being broadcasted on OGN, its still sonic's league.
I don't care what SPOTV calls their league in particular but I'd rather not have to deal with unnecessary confusion of sharing the same acronym especially when it comes to LR threads....I don't want to deal with the LR community.
also I believe LSW is going to cast both the SPOTV and the sonic starleague, even more confusion.

Sure its a small inconvenience for folks writing live report stuff. Tough luck. I know that its not being run by OGN but that doesn't mean that the change in broadcaster won't lead to a name change anyway.
sure maybe down the line the name would change, in the mean time its 2 brands putting out different(somewhat same, I guess) products but sharing the same name.
I don't know whats more sad BW folks hoping for :revive" when bw is doing fine as causal game on afreeca with decent viewership and running tournaments or ppl complaining about 3 letters about project which they don't even work on do some work for it and than you can be complaing about the game. OGN wont provide SC2 content, just remeber in the past GOM exp vs spotv...
Just let them provide StarCraft Brood War casual league and SC2 cups on two different things and dont look on the name bot on quality of the event. Don't generalize, the BW community is not freaking out over this,I am
I'm not representing the BW community, I'm representing my interests and my views.
You're right, my complaining doesn't actually help, but I'm airing out my disappointment.
why the acronyms wouldn't be the same if it's about different games. you could even guess how much proleagues are there. btw, gsl is actually garena starleague @ league of legends.
the thing i really wonder is why thursday is empty while wednesday both SPOTV SL and GSL are played.

Yeah, surely it's in their mutual interest to not go head to head, let alone for us watching, unless SPOTV are making a statement that they can challenge GOM for sole ownership of the Korean scene
they should change the name, I absolutely believe that they should, but I don't think the reason for picking the name in the first place is out of spite.

SPOTV isn't even calling its own league SSL. Just "Starcraft II Starleague". SSL is just some acronym that lichter made up to make typing it out easier, and you guys are getting wound up over nothing.
On the other hand, Sonic actually uses the SSL acronym, so yea. But even then, Sonic didn't start using the SSL acronym himself until the 8th season or so .. SSL was something I coined (because typing out SonicTV BJ Starleague is dumb, and didn't fit in the calender), and it ended up sticking.

Given all the rumours about GOM's financial state at the moment, that's what made me question it. Purely a guess trying to understand their thinking.
I hope that it's not going to happen, because a more diverse scene is better for everyone, but there's got to be a reason for the competitive scheduling. Surely they're not that incompetent that they didn't realise GSL is on Wednesdays...

god damn it lichter.
actually, upon further investigation, it appears I am wrong. In all of the links provided by lichter, I could not find a single reference to "SSL", but upon searching for other articles about this, I see a couple of sources referring to the "SSL" acronym. My bad .. kind of weird how all the articles linked in OP managed to not reference that though.

I've made it clear that I don't read Korean. So I saw it on some sites and figured that was actually what they were abbreviating it to.
Ok yeah so the similar acronym thing is weird and bad and they ought to come up with a more interesting name and they ought to not overlap their broadcast dates, but let's focus on the big picture here
Proleague is coming. A second major Korean SC2 league is coming. The hype train I've boarded is picking up too much steam to be derailed by these relatively minor concerns

wow thats pretty harsh
SC2 is also pretty sad isn't it? I mean, a lot of nerds hoping for it to be big while it is doing fine as a casual game on twitch with decent viewership and that casual tourney WCS that anyone (even those who recently dropped out of code A) can win while LoL and CSGO attracts the real money and competition as opposed to the flimsy casuals of SC2

LOL they changed the article now. It said Wednesday this morning but they edited the article to say Thursday. Why do they keep doing this to me -_-
Might be part of that KeSPA jail punishment. :D On topic: I am glad that it was only a mistake in the article, now we have korean StarCraft 2 on every day in the week.

It's actually funny because they usually post a bare bones article first and then update it over the next hour or so with more information and news. Sort of what like I do. So if they take took long I don't notice when they add information or change typos T_T

you come nowhere if you only mind the numbers, because angry birds pwns it after all.
Seem's pretty shitty to use the same acronym as Sonics league after the success he's had with it. The acronym may have been thought up without realising originally, but I don't believe for a second that it got to this stage without someone noticing it.

This simply MUST be rectified.
The only way to ensure the name doesn't share an acronym with any other entity is to make it completely ridiculous.
I propose "SPOTV Starcraft II Starleague With A Unique And Not At All Generic Name And Acronym". SSSWAUANAAGNAA for short.

Don't understand why so many ppl are upset here, that acronym thing is some minor problem which shouldn't create big confusion (just call it BW SSL and SC2 SSL), I'm totally glad BW fans and enthusiasts get to watch their favorite game in Korean TV again, will enjoy to watch some as well .
The addition of a second individual league in SC2 in Korea is a great thing as it will create more opportunities for players to show their skills AND we fans get to watch more highest-level SC2 (what I personally am totaly grateful for, this whole foreigner hyping isn't exactly my thing, I want to see the absolute best players have to offer)!!!
The SSL mixup would only really be an issue if both were on OGN, but Sonic Starleague is on OGN and this is on SpotTV so if they advertise it correctly which shouldn't be hard people should be smart enough to know the difference.
May both forms of Starcraft live on so the fans of each or both can continue to enjoy them!

People undersell the power of brand recognition; yes it does matter, alot infact, whether consumers will recognize your brand and develop loyalty to it. I tune in to watch HSC and IEM and DH with out looking at the player list because I have something I expect when I hear those names, and I'm sure thousands of people who just want to watch "the best gaming related content" of the weekend who aren't die hard followers of a specific game do the same. And those are the demographics brands are trying to cater to most of the time as well.

The problem will occur in the "News" side bar. It will be difficult to tell just based on the sidebar whether the news thread is about BW or SC2. We would like to avoid this problem.

Strictly for the purposes of clarity, couldn't TL just make up a different acronym? Like S2L or something?
We are contemplating using different acronyms for clarity in the forums. However, we can't change what it's actually called.
True but they are actually called different things. Is the English acronym established by SPOTV? If not then I guess TL has some influence here. If nothing else then when the English casters are passing the time with chatter it will probably get mentioned.
Of course, true confusion isn't likely to cloud the mind of anyone you're ever likely to hear from so it probably seems trivial but... I think it might matter to people new to the scene.
Or maybe not, it's just that I'm already confused as hell with what tournaments are on where and how much they matter and I've been following since 2009.
dang, this SSL acronym, still seems odd that no one noticed that it conflicts with SSL which has had that acronym for a while. I think this post sums it up well:

100% true post. I personally might tune into DH because I remember enjoying some games in the past and recognize the brand but don't really care for either IEM or HSC so I just ignore them if I see them lol. I guess I hope they aren't trying to use Sonic's SSL to try and get more attention to their league. Regardless, like others have, it's likely a bad mix up on their part. Hope it ends up being organized so that SCII fans can enjoy it.

Well, the issue is that the Sonic Starleague (or SSL)- a BW event, has been recently picked up by OGN, and now a new SC2 league has been also named SSL. This creates obvious difficulty.
"O, woe is me, T'have seen what I have seen, see what I see!" I come home, alone, and click on a link for SSL and suddenly I'll be watching [insert BW or SC2 here]. How will I ever recover. AND what if I LIKE it, it being the forbidden fruit, so to speak... Furthermore, what will my fellow elitist [insert BW or SC2 here] sisters think of me if they found out! I will never be able to show my face on TL again!
Oh SPOTV, Oh OGN, why do you toy with my emotions, stop spoiling me with so much RTS goodness. *Faint*
Let them call it what they like, it doesn't matter in Korea anyway but please let's not do that here on TL, I don't want my SSL search results flooded with whatever this is.
