Update:PartinG defeated TY and Flash to earn his spot from the Hot6ix Cup wild cards. He will face MarineKing in the Ro8.
In the first round, PartinG, TY and Flash all had a record of 1 win and 1 loss. But in the second round, PartinG proved his worth by winning both his matches to take Rain's place in the tournament.
Rain made clear that he wants to be a bigger part of the foreign scene. Clearly he's trying to go and win a big foreign tournament to cement that idea. It's a nice gesture.
Also, wouldn't it be hilarious if the storyline of the quarterfinals became "it looks like Parting has lost and Marineking has a good shot of going through, but Rain drops so Parting gets another chance and beats Marineking." Sweet, sweet revenge...
Rain has done this before. Remember him dropping out of GSL to go the MLG(I think?). I don't really support this decisions, but whatever, I guess he thinks that it is better for him this way.
Wow, this sucks. Zest vs Rain has become a fantastic rivalry over the course of the year. Rain will surely be kicking himself if he doesn't do well at San Jose.
Hard to complain about Flash/PartinG/TY getting a second chance, though, with a televised wildcard match no less.
Wow looks like they really want a fan voted player in the Ro8 d: Surprising decision from Rain tbh. There will be plenty of IEMs that he will be able to attend next year, while there's only one hot6ix cup in a year.
So there is another chance for Flash to be smacked down once again in a such big caliber tournament inside Korea He definitely may achieve elimination twice! :D
Wow i think MarineKing after 4-0 vs protoss would of fancied beating Rain and made him favorite. Vs a Terran or PartinG i don't see him being as favored
Shame the wildcard tourney won't be streamed, but if it makes for more great games in the hot6Cup itself, then it's all good ! Also, CJ herO can't be too happy about that news. Another tourney where he might get proxy gated in finals... ^_^

This is unfair for MKP. He won't know who his opponent will be until far later than anyone else in the bracket, reducing his time to prepare. Why in the world are players allowed to make these decisions with no penalties?

Nor does his opponent. That makes it balanced again, right?

MKP has no recent games for his opponents to study, except a very reactive 4-0 in TvP that I don't know what PartinG could take away from. You might be right in principle, but in practice I don't think MKP will have any unfair disadvantage.
And what penalty could you give Rain? He's already out of the tournament.

To be fair his opponent already has a second chance by accident. All in all I would say MarineKing can above all be "sad" because Rain was the best opponent for him among those 4 players (Rain, TY, Flash, PartinG). I don't think having 7 days instead of 11 to prepare is a massive penalty.
Hm, a shame, really. But luckily I like the players that have a chance on proceeding at least as much as I like Rain! Good luck on IEM to Rain, it would be really weird if he does bad over there. But after all, he left SKT to go to foreign tournaments more often, so I kind of understand his decision.
Dang, he was serious about the foreign tournament thing. Sucks for him, he could have definitely kicked marinekings butt and gotten a lot more money guaranteed
On November 24 2014 22:42 kinsky wrote: the logic replacement would be the 3rd place finisher out of rain´s group - TY. am i correct??!?!?
No, because that would be the same as if one group only had three players; it massively advantages players in that group. This way, everyone's had to overcome the same number of players to get through and ends with roughly the same match score.
Thoughts. Flash wins wildcard, beats MKP... disapointed fans everywhere. . I love Flash and he certainly may not advance through the wildcard but I am rooting for MKP this tournament! (zest too obv)
I am in Seoul this week, and to my great disappointment, it seemed as if there would be no live games at all this week. This wild card thingy seems like something worth watching.
I can't however find any info anywhere whether these games will be played online only or if I can go and see them in a stadium or something?

But the expected value of winning is not. Plus perhaps free trip to BrazilUSA (lol at me it's San Jose, not Sao Paulo)? Plus perhaps a chance to qualify directly for IEM WC? Plus perhaps better exposure for mYi?

Ok so it was pretty fucking irresponsible of Rain to play the group stage and then forfeit right? He's known he was qualified for San Jose since October and he knew the dates. herO did this as well but he didn't get past groups so he doesn't have to do this. Kind of a shitty thing to do.

Well, I don't think he should be fined since he didn't break any rules...
But yeah I dislike this move too. I expect the players to have some sort of commitment when entering a tournament, like you either don't enter IEM if it may confict on dates or don't enter Hot6 in the first place. Plus if he already knew he was going to San Jose, why waste your time playing the groups in Hot6 Cup? (and the other player's time and the tournament organizer's time too)
I understand he now wants to travel as much as possible but I hope this behavior doesn't become a regular thing now that there's gonna be so much action in Korea...
Presumably at the very least Rain will forfeit WCS points from Hot6ix Cup. Has it been announced whether IEM San Jose is giving WCS points for 2015? I would think it is but none is listed on the liquipedia page so far. I also must imagine being placed in a Ro16 group with (at least) two foreigners in it played a factor in Rain's decision. If, say, herO and Bomber were in Rain's IEM group I'm figuring this may not have been his decision.

Well, Naniwa was kicked out of the GSL for throwing a pointless match. I'd say this is worse, right? Though, the new season of GSL hasn't started yet, so he cannot get booted from Code S or anything right now...

It is dumb, but MKP getting a bye would be just as dumb. What if then, in the quarterfinals, Zestkey calls in sick? MKP goes straight to the finals off of winning a ro16 group? No one would take the finals seriously.
PartinG/Flash/TY getting a second chance is only awkward if they beat MKP. If MKP wins, the tourney is still 100% on track.
I agree that this sucks but I think part of the blame can be put on Hot6 as well. Rain has qualified for IEM quite a long while ago and they know their tournament is at the same time.
So why not just ask him and herO beforehand about their plans?

Someone help me out. I recall someone on TL doing some kind of math and figuring out how to keep MarineKing's name as MKP by making him MKP^2. Does anyone remember where that comment came from?

As ardent of a fan as I am about the Western SC2 scene, I can't help but feel that this is a very poor decision from Rain, particularly given that he had a pretty solid shot at the Hot6ix cup, and his experience in weekend tourneys is uninspiring. He must really be trying to prove a point.

Rain already did this for an MLG iirc, he got 3-0d by INnoVation in the RO8 and knocked out of code A as a result
Rain is the RAINing champion of Hot6 cup, one of the most important tournaments of the year with a status of a GSL tournament. Why he did that? I point this question to my favorite protoss player in this sport, because he really owns an explanation to his fans! This is just irrational and offensive deed toward the whole society. Of course no additional drama is required, there is always a good reason behind any decision, may be there's some conversation with IEM that we don't know, but people need an explanation. We are not talking about quiting in a group stage, but before a 1/4 final elimination match.
Of course this is an interesting chance for TY, Flash and Parting - the players who really deserved to proceed forward, so I'm happy for whoever wins.

Actually makes sense for rain. He would rather go to a foreign tournament where he has a higher chance to win than stay at this super competitive Hotsix cup. Also he is in foreign team now, and just like what imrusty269 said they would prefer rain to go foreign competition, and he would also prefer to travel around the world and meet fans and stuff like that.

Yeah, Rain went to MLG iirc. He was eliminated in the RO8 there and then to code B.
I know it's a lot more practical for Rain to beat on the less scary IEM players, but this is just taking advantage of the tournaments that give you the opportunity to be in front of the audience (which is important for a player).

We're (I'm?) not complaining about who won. We don't like how that was determined via BO1. Best of One (especially with Protoss involved) is as coinflippy as it gets. We're talking thousands of dollars and hundreds of WCS points, fame, etcetera, all based on a best of one? That's stupid. It would have been better to invite SoO over to use one of his leftover two spots he qualified for and play a group format

I'll always remember Parting for those 2 things before the Soul trains. Probably because I'm terran.

Yeah it all comes down to the money part eventually but what I find weird is the fact he qualified for the IEM on 10th october so he knew he was going to play there and since the final are both on 7th December its impossible to play both tournament, He actually qualified to play in the hot6ix cup on the 11th November which is after he already qualified and won a fully paid trip to the IEM.
So why did he play or GOM even let him play in the hot6ix cup? I could understand playing the 1st round to see if he gets to Ro8 then cancelling his IEM apperance if he got through and if he lost go to the IEM.
Should of gave someone else a chance from the start of it really.
while I can´t argue that Par ting´s advantage against MK in HotS is immense.. MK played very differently from the way he used to play.. so much that he got significant wins against two very strong PvT players.... Really hope he can get past Parting...

Apparently GOM didnt prerule this scenario so it's only clever of Rain to do what he did.
Jesus, everyone who says MK should get a BYE is annoying me so much. What kind of an achievement would it be if he hadfinally won a GSL tournament while not having to play in the Ro8?...I swear I will be extremely happy if he wins the whole thing but I want to see him deserve it as much as anyone else would deserve it by going through every match.
+ I want to see MK vs PartinG more than anything else!

You apparently forgot how PartinG made his name..
It's not as easy to soul train a Terran!
Ppl tends to remember him nowadays for Soul Train, but back during mid WoL as that other guy said Parting made his name by revolutionizing templar usage vs Terran. He was the first person IIRC who would have random templars spread out around the map to flank terran armies.
And go 3 nexus into 8-10 gate agression and make me cry
I'll always remember Parting for those 2 things before the Soul trains. Probably because I'm terran.
Edit: that 1gate -> triple Nexus -> 8-10 gate was really something horrifying.
PartinG's templar play and 3 Nexus 10gate were one of the most awesome moments of SC2 history, for me. That's the reason why I will always love PartinG, no matter what.
and how many does Parting have now? does he miss out on those 250? if he wins the tournament does he end up with 500 instead of 750? if Parting loses to MarineKing does he end up with 0 points or 250?

There are no WCS points for IEM, I believe.
I am myself confused why IEM would not give WCS points if Hot6ix Cup does. And yes, I am assuming Rain won't get his 250 WCS points. Maybe you can argue he should still get the 125 points for qualifying like he had lost in the Ro16, but I think if he's going to forfeit the tournament he should get zero points. PartinG should now be up for the 250 points for advancing to the Ro8.
If IEM really does not give WCS points that makes Rain's decision even stranger; 250 points can mean the difference between Blizzcon or not.

What is your source? Afaik IEM features all the requirements to have WCS points, and since Hot6ix has points it would seem logical from Blizz to give some to IEM as well

All requirements - except it is the off season.
Is H6C an outlier, an exception? That's the question we have to ask. And I wouldn't mind, getting points at H6C is approx. 1000000000000000000000000000000000 times harder than doing the same in IEMSJ

But wasn't there in the 2015 rules a part saying that eligible tournaments have to use the official ladder map pool, except in the off-season (I think I remember that, but I'm not sure)? That would fit with the "points given in the off-season" approach. And it would be unfair to place H6C as an exception tbh. Although I would laugh at Rain forfeiting H6C in hope of getting sweet easy points in San Jose, only not to have them in the end.
Events year-round will now be included in the WCS Standings and offer WCS points. Events held after the Global Finals at BlizzCon 2014 will be wrapped into the 2015 tally and subject to the 2015 requirements—two such events already qualify:
2014 Hot6 Cup – 4000 WCS points – November 18 to December 7 IEM San Jose – 4000 WCS points – December 6 and 7 Due to the current off-season, these tournaments are allowed to choose their own map pool.

How is hot6 going to solve this now? o.O Who deserves the 250 points?
the WCS rules say that a forfeit replacement counts as a swap, so it is now considered that Rain got 3rd place in his group, and Parting advanced from the group, so Rain now has 125 points, and Parting has at least 250 points
"the player’s placement will swap with the replacement player as according to the Advancement and Fill Policy. All applicable prize money and points will be paid out in the regressed position. The player will retain future season placements (Challenger or Premier League placement) if applicable from their regressed position. "

Giving up 250/375 (if he beats MK) sure points for MAYBE 750 played with jetlag? Don't know...

Is it clear these rules cover events other than the WCS leagues themselves? If so these rules should maybe be reconsidered. Not sure it's fair for Rain to get partial points for Hot6ix Cup when he knew (or should have known) all along he wouldn't be able to finish the tournament. Though since he locked in 125 points just for qualifying, maybe it's fair in this case because he wouldn't have known it yet at the time he qualified? Hopefully this is a rare issue but the rules shouldn't encourage people to join multiple conflicting tournaments.

I disagree completely. I don't like Rain's decision, but he earned 250 WCS points and PartinG didn't. Unless there is a rule that explicitly forbids the sort of stunt that Rain pulled, you can't just take his points away. If you don't want it happening again, write the rule.
PartinG has not earned 250 points. What he earned is the right to be in the ro8 under some strange, strange circumstances, and the opportunity to win WCS points if he can beat his opponent.
Yay PartinG won the spot, all is right in the world! Still wish Rain could defend his title but at least I can watch him at a reasonable time when he's in San Jose!

Well at least MVPMK can continue to practice TvP (on the other hand Parting had one hell of a PvT practice run).

Why? Cause he's so good that he qualified for two different events?
He's leaving the promised land for the foreign temptation (but it's not like he had a chance against Zest in the semi anyway).
1. He totally would've beaten Zest and 2. He'd probably like to play in front of a foreign crowd and have lots of viewers watch him since he recently joined a new team.

MKP² has no chance imo
That's what everyone said last round.
...and will continue saying every round of every tournament MK is in until he wins a tournament again (or has several high-place finishes at least).
