Up Close & Personal: Smix, Polt, Bomber and Apollo
It's time for another round of Up Close & Personal with Meru, this time from the grandest event of the year.
BlizzCon 2014 brought together not only the best players of the year, it also drew many of our most beloved personalities. Smix has become a staple of Dreamhack and many other tournaments due to her insightful bilingual interviews, but she has been the subject of interviews far too infrequently. Polt and Bomber, two of WCS AM's most decorated Koreans, also share something about themselves. Finally, Apollo returns as it appears he just likes talking to Meru.

So, first question. Why is your name Smix/Polt/Bomber? Where'd it come from?
Smix: My name is "Smix" because I was a big fan of my older brother's gaming, I guess growing up and his gaming handle was "faenix", or "fenix" rather. It actually came from the character Fenix from Starcraft 1. And he shortened that to "Nix" later on. And my name is Sue Min Lee and if you shorten that it becomes "smile" just like if you take letters out. Then if you combine "smile" and "nix" is... "Smix". It's super complicated but... *shrug*
Polt: When I was really young I played Japanese RPG game and there's one of the characters whose name was Polt. I like that character so I named me Polt.
Bomber: It comes from my aggressive style.
If you had to pick 3 progamers to help you in a fight who would you pick?
Smix: MC for the intimidation factor. Polt because he's very very smart and rational and logical and I feel like he would try to find the most... strategic. Yeah yeah like he'd get us out of the situation hopefully. And Maddelisk! Because she's actually really freaking strong. I think she's actually stronger than most if not all progamers I know. Have you seen her instagram?!
Yeah she works out like crazy!
Smix: Yeah yeah I would pick Maddelisk.
Polt: MC. Then iNcontroL. And me.
Bomber: Nobody.
Nobody?!
Bomber: Yeah.
You'll fight everybody?
Bomber: Yeah
What's something bad or embarrassing that you've done but you were never caught?
Smix: Oh my god I have too many embarrassing stories but they're all embarrassing because I got caught. I remember when I was 5 or something I had a crush on this guy in my class, and of course back then the way you show you like someone is by being mean to them. And so I was running around the classroom chasing him and teasing him about something, and in the middle of chasing him I burped very loudly. It just came out of my body. And it was extremely loud, so loud that he turned around and was like "Was that you?" And I was like *hand gesture* and that was the first very embarrassing memory I have.
Well you got his attention.
Smix: I did but it didn't go anywhere. He just, it stopped at "You're gross."
Polt: I don't have any kind of that thing because I think I make some embarrassing things but it always get caught so *laughs*
Who would you pick as your wingman or wingwoman?
Apollo: Jaedong. Definitely Jaedong. He's handsome. He's famous. He's gonna attract all the women. He's a little bit shy so I'd have Jaedong but... you can have A wingman but it's kinda good to have two people, but I think three people's best. Four is too much. So Jaedong definitely. I'm gonna need a guy with confidence and funny too. Because Jaedong is "I'm kinda funny" but Jaedong is the "I'm the famous and handsome guy". So Jaedong and maybe Tasteless. Tasteless and Jaedong.
You're not afraid that they're gonna get the girls away from you instead and distract them?
Apollo: No way I can fight my own fight there.
Do you have any skills or talents outside of Stacraft?
Smix: So a lot of people don't know this because it just never gets brought up but my first, I guess, big love in life was volleyball. I'm horrible at it now just because like all things my skills deteriorated when I stopped playing. But in high school I was volleyball captain. I played volleyball in the summer with different club programs and I played outside hitter. If anyone knows what that is. So that was my first passion in life. I was very very much into it.
Polt: Not at all I'm really bad at other things. Maybe I'm kind of good at studying.
Bomber: Soccer. And soccer soccer.
Apollo: I play a lot of pool or snooker. I quite enjoy that game. When I'm not playing Starcraft I might go for a couple of drinks and play this game quite a bit. I've been learning how to play kicker or foozeball as you guys call it. It's called kicker in German. Hmm.. what other talents? I dunno I'm not a very talented person. I just kinda do Starcraft stuff.
Out of the Round of 16 players, who's most likely to become president?
Smix: Polt.
Apollo: Polt.
Polt: Well if you ask this question like to all the other 15 players besides me, they are going to answer Polt. So I'm going to say: "Polt".
Bomber: Of course it is MC.
Who's most likely to be evil dictator?
Polt: Evil dictator? Hmm... I think Taeja.
Smix: MC because I don't think he gives a crap about anyone's opinions. So if he got to that position of authority he would just implement laws and rules that would help serve his happiness. Emperor MC. Actually I think in that country they'd have really good food so maybe I wouldn't mind so much.
Apollo: StarDust.
Bomber: It also MC.
Lastly, could you do a unit impression? You can act it out or sound it out.
Smix: This is exciiiiting~! Okay okay I dunno how the overlord sounds now in Starcraft 2—this is so embarrassing—but in Starcraft 1 they used to sound like this: *makes weird gargling noises*
Polt: *laughs* Kaboom baby!
Bomber: I know one sound for Starcraft 1. "You want piece of me boy?"
Apollo: I'm going to do this really simple because I'm terrible at this. I'm gonna be a marine. *trembles.. or something?*
