Today Blizzard and LocalStrike have announced the StarCraft II: Copa America 2014, with a $15,000 USD prize pool.
This year though, citizens of North and South America will be able to participate (in 2013, Canada and the US were excluded for some reason).
Originally, the Copa America was created to be sort of a place holder for a WCS South America, but it looks that this year the focus has changed for it to be a continental tournament to help the local scene.
Think of this as a WCS America, without Koreans to help grow the local scene.
Think you've got what it takes to battle to the top of the Americas? If you're a citizen of any country in North or South America and in Grand Master, Master or Diamond League, you are eligible to compete in the open 128 player qualifier for Season 1 starting on May 22. If you're interested in participating, check out the rules and format of the tournament and sign up now!
And here is the scedule:
Unfortunately, although citizens of Canada and the US can participate, there will only be streams in Spanish and Portuguese, no English right now, but if i remember correctly, around mid season of the copa america 2013 there was an english stream, so it could be added later if there is enough demand i guess.
This is great! I really like that there's a tournament with a big price pool where only NA/SA citizens are allowed. Don't get me wrong I really respect the Koreans for their hard work and their success is completely deserved, as well as I can totally understand that if all the Koreans would just stay in KR, there would not be nearly as much prize money for the freakin' amount of skill collected in this little area.
Still the first year of WCS with the separate qualifiers for every country was my favorite SC2 tournament by now.
Really looking forward to this, even if I am from EU.
i really think we need more tourneys or leagues besides the WCS. we see so little from new players in any spotlight in the NA scene.this could be a great first step. do this (copa america) and maybe something like this in europe. call it europa cup or whatever the equivalent call it in soccer in europe.

I imagine they do this for the struggling parts of starcraft 2; scandinavia does not struggle
I'm not so sure about that, Scandinavia could certainly do with a regular event, let's call it "King of the North" instead of Copa Scandinavia. I think it would do tons of good especially for those who haven't reached the Naniwa/Snute/BBK/Welmu level yet.

Actually, I would love to see somekind of "Scandinavia" (Nordic WCS) sc2 tournament. I would watch it.

Because its not run by Blizzard its run by the south american scene and funded by Blizzard.
Blizzard will support a WCS CN when and if their scene shows it can sustain itself and someone broadcasts it reliably to WCS Standards (maybe even English Broadcast required alongside Chinese), this has not happened and is unlikely to with China's Competitive gaming viewers preferring MOBA-esque games in the large majority.
I love regional tourneys. Not only do you get to see interesting games from less known players but we all know the prestige of being the best player on the continent is on the line.
Sorry, no Polt or viOLet ! Even though he is captain America.
Only players of American nationality (South, Central end North) are allowed to participate. It is not allowed for players to participate based on their current residence.
It is an honor to have HUK representing Argentina xD LoL
I have mixed feelings about opening the tourney to NA. For one, I think it could force our local heroes to train more and put more efforts to try and succeed. On the other hand, I know our average player level is below NA, and I feel it could scare a bit players that are not top level here in South America. Either way, we will have to let it develop and see what happens !
Whoa, that trailer was really awesome, didn't expect that. Seems like a good idea to get more involved, too. Can't wait to see where this goes and how the games go, good luck to anyone playing!

2.2.4 In the seeding of the first stage, each season, the 128 players will be ranked firstly based on ranking points from Copa America, and secondly, by the Americas Ladder server, dividing them into four qualifiers. First priority will be Copa America points. Second will be player League. Thirdly, player ladder points. Players will be numbered from 1 to 128, and will be faced 1 against 128, 2 against 127, 3 against 127 and so on. A player´s final standing will be will an average between his best rank and league, and his current position. (I.E.: If a player was Grand Master in a previous season, and this season he is Master, it will be considered the highest.)
Well on my current account which is 8-0 with a ton of pool, it was rank 7 GM in 1 season finish, I guess I'll just pray when the bracket/playerlist comes back up it'll be enough :S?
