Rain: "I won because I never gave up"

Claims he wanted to type GG in Set 5

How do you feel after your championship in the Hot 6ix Cup?
This is not an official league and just an event league but taking down so many great players for the championship has been very fulfilling. It doesn't even compare to the last time I won a championship and I must be at least twice as happy right now.

You can't have been happy with your performance this year
I lost interest in the game for a while. I was still playing a large number of games but not practicing properly. Lately, I've regained my passion for the game and have been working really hard to improve so I think that's why I'm doing well on the ladder and won this tournament. I will continue this going into 2014.

You took Sets 1 and 2 very easily but allowed Soulkey to catch right back up in the two subsequent sets.
After the first two sets, I thought the series was mine as long as I played macro games. However, I was too safe in Sets 3 and 4 and lost as a result. Therefore, I played more off the cuff in the rest of the games.

How will you spend your prize money?
I don't have any particular plans yet. I'll treat my teammates to something nice and save the rest for when I get married.

You won against Dear who has been showing the highest level of play lately
I think a lot of people got interested in our match because Dear has been performing so well. I actually believe Dear didn't practice enough. On the other hand, that victory was my announcement to the world that I am back.

Soulkey is known for his reverse sweeps so were you worried at any point?
I've lost in Starleague after taking the first two sets before so I was very afraid at one point. However, at the same time, the experience let me handle myself a lot better.

How did you prepare for this tournament?
I haven't had any tournaments to attend for a while now so I was bored and itching to post some results. I started practicing hard 2-3 months ago specifically to win the Hot 6ix Cup.

You had a comeback victory in Set 5
That set presented me with a situation I haven't experienced in practice. I was so behind that I was about ready to type in GG but kept telling myself I needed just a little more time to stabilize. However, I was truly inches away from defeat and the hero DTs are the only thing that saved me. Also, Soulkey lost the Zerglings in my main too carelessly so that helped me make a come back. All in all, I won because I never gave up.

If you had to point out your own flaws and how you plan to improve as a player?
Directors, coaches and other people have told me, and I agree, that my play is too safe and macro-oriented. People also tell me there isn't enough diversity in my play. I am trying to rectify this and since I know exactly what the problem is, I think it's more than possible to fix.

How would you rate your own play today and was the match fun?
I honestly believe today's match was extremely fun to watch. I would rate it 90/100. Set 5 deserved 100 for the fun factor.

Proleague is set to begin soon so tell us your determination
As long as I perform up to par I think SKT1 is going to crush. I hope all of our fans support us.

The upcoming WCS(GSL) season has a first place prize of 70 million won (~$70000) so are you going to work hard to win?
I don't care about the prize money that much. Even if it were just 20 million won like last time, I would still try my best.

Anything to add?
i want to thank all my fans who cheered me on. They supported me even during my slump and that really gave me energy and motivation. I want to thank all my teammates who helped with practice, the director and the coach for helping me prepare for this tournament. My team's administration came to the practice house and really paid a lot of attention to this tournament as well. This is my first championship in a while and I think this feeling is going to be hard to forget so I'll try my very best to win my next tournament. Please give me lots of support.

Unlike Taeja and Innovation, Rain doesn't seem to care about price money that much

Not going to lie, he played very very good today. If he didn't cannon rush SK it may have been 4-0. He played against another super solid player who was slightly off the pace today, but still almost no holes in his macro play. Funny how he lost motivation because it seems to be happening to lots of top players, but he's come back. This is a very stacked tourney too although it's a "special event", equal to code s.
There is no such thing is "e-sports". There is Brood War, and then there is crap for nerds.

Never give up, never surrender!

It's good to see Rain still in the Protoss spotlight from time to time

Thanks storywriter!

This was a good interview. I wanted Soulkey to win, but you can't resist being happy for Rain. I always love reading progamers saying they feel passionate about the game.

He played incredibly today. I can see T1 destroying in Proleague with the additions of Classic and Bravo to give the team more depth.

Rain seems to be playing the best starcraft of his life.

Well everyone is getting better, but if I had to look at one period of time for Rain I'd point right towards the KeSPA transition because at the moment he was a level above his competition. I cannot really say the same right now because there are a lot of players who are performing just as well. The T1 roster was even strong back then when they added PartinG. I'd say they underachieved and fell back on Rain too much.

thanks for translation! I missed most of the games but he played game 1 pretty well. Game 5 sounded like it was 'the' game to watch though lol. Glad to see Rain win although I do feel a bit bad for SK.

Great to see him winning a tournament after this frustrating year where he lost OSL final and practically bubbled Blizzcon.

He is playing really well lately, hopefully he can take this form into Proleague and next years tournaments!

Yeah, the venue only looked to be at most at 25% capacity. Considering a good number of those are teammates and family, the number of "normal" viewers is pretty low. =\

I guess one excuse is that people don't want to go there in the cold?

This tournament is small in scale compare to previous blizzard cups because it was not supposed to be that big in the first place just like Rain said that it's not official league. It is expected. I had a lot of fun watching though.
