Really sad to see sC retire, thought he was doing well since his comeback. Hope they both succeed in whatever they decide to do/play in the future!
sC's legendary game vs Nestea on Crossfire, from GSL May 2011 semifinals: Another great one, sC vs Losira on Terminus, same GSL but Ro8:
Sad to see sC retiring. He seemed like he was starting to make a comeback. But then again with FXO losing their sponsorship I guess it really isn't that surprising.
Hope sC and TheBest find their passion and success in where they go. Saddens me to see sC leave SC2 again, but I wish he finds the best fit for his life.
that sucks especially sC, but not to surprising since the FXO thing. Hope they rather try Dota2 then LoL. Not that I think I will ever see them again unless they come back to Sc2 :p

sc however comes more as a surprise, best of luck to him.. i always wonder where these pro gamers end up a couple of years later..
Damn.. this is sad. Also I find it weird that progamers now are different from the BW pro-gamers before, thats its either you play sc or retire, but not switch to other esport titles. Makes me feel they really don't have the genuine passion for the game. Just my opinion.

Further downsizing... I hope nobody else leaves fOu between now and when FXO officially stops sponsoring them. sC had so much potential, TheBest really provided some entertaining games but damn it has been a long time since I last paid attention to their games so seems like this is inevitable. We've been seeing some prominent KeSPA players leave the scene and now some of the eSF players who have fallen off will be gone as well. A year and a half ago I thought SC2 was expanding and would never have imagined this. =/

BW pros had no other option back then
Yeah I know. I mean. Look mostly at the kespa players now, most of them choose to retire for good, instead of shifting to other games. And a lot of them are still young.
I didn't even know that TheBest was still playing since I don't watch that much SC2 anymore, but best of luck to them both and there's always a chance sc will come back again haha.

Chances are good. After a constant stream of negative news in the Starcraft scene, I can imagine that it's hard for SC2 progamers to not be somewhat jealous of League's popularity (especially with the fans) at the moment.

These games are interesting in the sense that there's a fair amount of tension in the pushes, but holy god were pro players terrible back then. People who miss this state of the game are hopelessly nostalgic. The only way to maintain SC2 like this would be for the best players in the game to have not progressed past the current mid-masters level of play.

sc2 should retire obviously. So many players leaving means game failed. I dont want to start new war on "scdying" subject, just personally think that Blizzard should make wc4 and try so stay competitive wih moba.

yes every esport game that isnt nr1 in viewership should retire , nice logic
also sc2 dying in korea doesnt mean sc2 is dead in foreign scene aswell..
Boss said they are going to switch to LoL. Idk why you would switch to such an impacted game. There is basically free money in the dota2 nexon sponsorship league after the ex fxo dota team wins the first one.

sC is the Michael Jordan of starcraft 2 except he hasnt won anything or been one of the best players in the game for a long period of time. Basically just the trying new games and retiring part.

With only GSL holding tournaments, and not even small on-line cups going on the side, and something like 100/150 (??) or more pros in KR, there's not much choice for the middle of the pack players. There's still some 50 retirements more to come.
You either retire, or play small cups with terrible lag on EU/NA while laddering all day for months waiting for the next GSL qualifiers.
The chances of beatings the likes of Innovation and win a trip to something like IEM are slim and rare.

Dammit, I had SC on my anti-team LAST season. He did well last season and I chose not to put him on my anti-team this season. And instead put Alicia on. Dammit.

Sad but true. You can ride the coat tails of results that are nearly 3 years old forever.
TheBest of luck in the future. No, seriously, I really enjoyed both of their playstyles and I'm really sad to here that sC won't be continuing with SC2 after coming back to it. Hope his health stays well and TheBest keeps on microing through life like a beast.
Nooo.....sc I really hoped for him to do well again! He was doing parade pushes before they were popular (like in 2011) For once, I hope this is related to the game, not his health

It's just a continuation of retirements that have been going on for weeks now. I'm not using these two to make a point, but it's hard not to look at whats been going on and say everything's fine and dandy. I'm getting used to people defending the game nomatter what though and find it mildly entertaining so please keep doing what you do.

Many many pros joined the scene when Kespa switched, the scene could not realistically handle that many pro's therefore retirements were announced, the scene is regressing back, it will eventually stabilize.

Okay, which players are you using to make a point? Not a single player that has retired in the last few months was remotely near championship level.
This is the period of time when contracts expire. Of course players with no results to their name are going to call it quits.

I've heard this argument before... but in reality if the game was popular enough it could support all these new pros and more.
I don't like to diss SC2 cause it is still my favorite game, and I'm hoping for a revival and resurgence in popularity at some point. I guess LOTV.

No game is that popular. Not even LoL. Esports is top heavy, and it has always been the small percent at the top that have actually made a good living. Everyone else just keeps trying until they can't justify it as a career any longer.
TheBest needed to retire after his performance in the Super Tournament vs MarineKing (it was atrocious).
sC needs to stop game hopping. He probably wasn't doing well in LoL, so all he has now is DotA2, HoN, CS, and World of Tanks. And idk how well HoN, CS, and WoT is doing.
Two guys who hung around past their prime.. but I'm glad they did. I was a big fan of sC and him getting hit with a slew of physical ailments, right when he was doing so great, was pretty unfortunate I miss when he was on team MVP!

At it's absolut peak brood war could support 12 teams, 7 + kespa team after matchfixing. What makes you think that we could magically support like 16 after the korean sc2 scene struggled to maintain 8? There is only so many people you can support, and there is a limit. When a game that had no competiton as the number 1 esport in sout korea could support 12 at it's best times, how fucking uber popular do you want sc2 to get to support all the esf + kespa teams? I guess we need north korea to pick up starcraft or something.

I'd rather not get used to people shitting up this forum by stringing together unrelated events and unifying them under the single conspiracy that they happen because SC2 is dying. If sC and TheBest did anything more in their careers other than occasionally take games off much more relevant players, they'd probably have an incentive to continue playing. Turns out it's pretty difficult to keep playing a game you have virtually no success in excluding a couple deep runs in 2011 during the GomTvT era. Additionally, as fate has already proven, way more players before these past few months of apocalyptic bad news have retired for this reason, and they will continue to do so until the end of time. Because it's pretty normal.

Yeah, and also it doesn't help the fact that South Korea has had half the tournaments than before.
Shortly after KeSPA switch, there were 5 GSLs that year and 1 OSL too (potentially 2 OSLs a year alongside those GSLs next year).
However, now it's 2 GSL and 1 OSL (technically we did have 3 GSL but that one was before the WCS system).
Of course, you can argue whether GSLs or OSLs would have cut short regardless of WCS system or not, and that's definitely a valid point (even without WCS, would there be less GSLs this year anyway)? In any case, the problem of the retirements lately is not just because of more players but also less tournaments too.

Honestly, for me watching those videos was just a reminder of how bad people were at SC2 back then. A current masters player would have beaten up on either one of them. They were interesting games, but the level of overall play is just... underwhelming.

I think they would have been cut short regardless. There are not enough fans in Korea. OSL in BW was sustainable. GOM GSL from what I recall has been propped up by blizzard the whole time.

I thought that was only the first 3 with the huge pricepools and from that point they got sponsors.
