Interview with Liquid`TaeJa, DH Bucharest Champion
Liquid's Terran ace talks about how he's not the best Terran in the world, shows his appreciation for San, and shamelessly complains about balance.
We hoped to talk to Liquid`TaeJa right after his amazing championship run at DreamHack Bucharest, but a long break for the Korean holiday of Chuseok left us waiting for over a week. Which was apparently just enough time for TaeJa to start downplaying his skill and find justification in complaining about Terran balance.
On winning DreamHack Bucharest, and the best Terrans in the world
Waxangel: Hey, #1 Terran!
TaeJa: ??
Is it okay if we do an interview for TL.net? Oh, it's #1 player in the world, right?
Okay;;
Before the WCS Season 2 Finals, you said you weren't that confident because you hadn't been able to practice. Two weeks later you go off and win DreamHack without a single loss from the Ro16 on. I guess you practiced?
Hmmm, honestly I wasn't that confident at DreamHack. I think I just gained the confidence I needed by beating strong players in the SC2L finals the night before. Having that confidence let me play better.
Was that part of the reason you were unusually emotional and happy after winning DreamHack Bucharest? Because it was particularly hard to win?
Honestly I didn't go thinking that I would win the championship. I just went with the goal of winning the team tournament (SC2L), so I was really happy when I ended up winning DreamHack. It had the strongest line-up of any tournament I've been in so far, and it was difficult because I didn't have much confidence in my skill. It was an abrupt participation, because of the SC2L finals.
Your TvT in particular looked very strong. Did you figure things out as you prepared? You mentioned at the tournament that you discovered the strength of mech
Hmm, I don't think my TvT is strong, I just think it's about average.
As I was playing ladder games, most of my opponents were using mech. I felt that it was a strong composition as I lost a lot of games; it's good at both harassment and straight up engagements.
A lot of people are calling you the best Terran in the world now. What do you think?
During practice, I don't think that I'm that good. But I think people call me the best because I suddenly do well when I go to tournaments. There's a bit of a skill gap between me and the best Terran players.
Then who do you think is the best?
Looking at TvZ and TvP, I think INnoVation is good. In TvT, I think Polt is good. (Interview was before Polt and INnoVation played their WCS groups).
Anything funny happen in Romania?
Well, nothing funny. The other players did get ripped off by a taxi driver though, so I guess that was notable.
Your self-clapping is also getting some attention. What's up with that?
I didn't know that I could play at that level at the time, and I was proud of myself so I clapped.
Being San's #1 fan
You appeared in ASUS ROG Summer as a member of [SanFan] clan, but it seems you have left since. What happened?
Oh, San hyung told me to delete the clan, lol.
Wait, you were the clan leader? What kind of player gives another one that kind of free publicity?
Oh, we're just friends, and I'm a fan of his, lol. He always maintains a position toward the top of the ladder, and in particular he's really, really good at PvZ.
He's always doing super well in prelims and online tournaments, but can't seem to get things going in live events. You think that's a nervousness issue?
Hmm, I don't know him to be the type that gets very nervous.
So, Liquid`San?
We have HerO who's doing so well, so we can't have Liquid`San.
Wow, that PR.
;;
What do you do with your prize money? Your friends probably ask you to buy them stuff to eat?
My friends who live in Pyungtaek ask me a lot to buy them dinner at VIPS (a Western style restaurant in Korea), but there really hasn't been a time where we could all get together.
What about other pros?
I'm still young, so they should be the ones buying me meals, keke.
WCS Season 3 and balance
Looking at WCS points, it seems like you're nearly confirmed for Blizzcon already. What level do you think you'll be at by then?
There's a lot of time left, so I think I can bring myself up as much as possible.
You still feel like you're lacking in comparison to your peak last year?
Hmmm, I think I'm better than I was last year in terms of skill, but it's just that other players have become that much better as well. So I'll have to keep improving as well.
Any thoughts on the recent balance test map?
Looking at all the tournaments right now, Terran is doing poorly. Buffing the other races in that situation is ridiculous. Buffing mech means that mech will be all you can play in TvT.
Terran... bad... then maybe you should stop winning?
Ah, I mean WCS KR/EU/NA.
Uh, Terrans won the last season of KR, AM, and the Season Finals...
I mean this season, season 3, keke.
Why don't you just throw season 3 then, for balance.
No.
So, your WCS AM Group has Top, HuK, and Major in it. What do you think about it?
I think I got a fairly managable group compared to the other Korean players.
If you look at who's made the Ro16 so far, you think you could win WCS AM?
It depends on how I play once I'm there. I've run out of confidence again lately, because Terran is so bad.
Any final words for your fans, and David Kim?
Thanks to all my fans for always cheering me on. I don't know if David Kim will see this, but please don't nerf Terran.
bahaha Taeja doing a lot of playing dumb. I'm glad he's telling off people who love giving the best player in the world title to whoever won the most recent tournament, though he's definitely still a contender for that right now.

If you're not complaining about your chosen race, you're not a proper progamer.

no liquid`san ;;
It isn't just because he won the most recent tournament. He has been consistently getting better for 3 months now and was already a top 10 player. I think in the last two months the only series he has lost have been to Polt 2-3 and Bomber 2-3 both of which were very close. He also looks dominant in his games while the other top players are faltering. Some people were saying he was the best before DH. We was second in the PR before it.

I agree and his friggin high skill level is quite apparent, just musing. There are a lot of Innovation haters who look for any possible way to say he's not a top player anymore, for example because he lost to maru or because he lost to curious, but I don't think it's that simple.
i dont get how taeja thinks innovation is better than him in tvp ?
has he seen his tvp .. hes like the only terran player i see that doesnt try to scv-all in most of the time .. although in tvz no doubt innovation is the best in the world right now

I don't either but when Taeja has won like 4 straight games against Innovation and started to kind of man handle him as of late it seems pretty safe to say Taeja has taken over him. Especially when Taejas other matchups are still top notch. In taejas own opinion his TvT is his weakest.

At this point I can agree that Innovation doesn't have a monopoly on the title. Probably best just to leave it there ^^
Man... Taeja is a beast. I'll never forget that ghost micro against rain. I'm a huge innovation fan boy but that was unprecedented. Everybody whines but we are yet to see a Protoss of this level (for Zerg I'd say soulkey).

Rain did not attend Dreamhack. Taeja 3-0ed Rain at the WCS Season 2 Finals.

oops that's the one. Sorry i've been out of the scene and i found a random VOD. I guess i kind of assumed it was DH. It had Apollo casting, and for some reason i just associate him with DH. I don't even know if he casts at DH anymore.

Kinda sucks we don't have a centralized system in the GSL anymore to determine without a doubt the current best player. I mean, theres still WCS KR, but so many top players are abroad now for the better opportunities, that no matter who wins WCS KR, the winner will still be compared to some other top Korean who didn't compete in KR that season. Innovation held that title when he was destroying everyone, but now it's not so clear anymore when TaeJa blows up the scene everywhere else including innovation himself lol.

Isn't this what season finals is for?
Well it would be if all the regions were same skilled but they aint. As result you got people that could have done better in Europe/America kicked out of WCS Korea simply because the competition was harder there. While the intend was good all the WCS did was making OSL/GSL less prestegious imo.

It also allowed for more high quality consistent content with WCS KR and WCS AM. Hell AM had half of the ro4 in the last season finals. WCS KR is slightly weaker mainly because foreign team members left it but most of the heavy hitters aside from really taeja and polt are still there. (those were literally the only players that were in Code S that left and the only that consistently were in code S)

It's volatile. You can make a case for several players on any given Sunday and then they start under performing. A lot of players are aware of this so they take what they can get.

Innovation never won WCS Kr or GSL though so we didn't use that to determine he was the best.
No, but he won a WCS, and then went on to 3-0 Soulkey, the only person that stopped him in KR. For a while he was the undisputed best player in the world; even when he did lose to Soulkey.

And what I'm saying is that code S doesn't really describe the best of the best players anymore, so it's kind of irrelevant to compare using that metric when other code S players travel abroad and get smashed. TaeJa and Polt just happened to be Code S, and they're also wrecking the scene without the "blessing" a GSL win grants to a player's run for best in the world title.

Pretty dick thing to say after winning a major tourney.
LOL no you're just butthurt cuz Flash didn't win it all. Come on, bring Flash's so called GODLY proleague stats and lets see if it counts towards Blizzcon
I agree with him about not nerfing terran, at least the way that they're doing it on the test map. Slower widow mine projectile would be a better way to do it, so that only the best of the best zergs give terran a harder time.
Funny how one becomes the best terran for winning dreamhack. Dreamhack usually has about 2 or 3 koreans, although this time the roster is about half as good as a typical mlg. There's a terran that has just won code S, the toughest individual league in the world, and is still in ro8. There's a terran that just got the best record in proleague, the toughest teamleague in the world that has a large number of games. And there's a terran has just won a weekend tourney, dreamhack, which only had about 10 good players only. I hate calling certain player best after a little weekend tourney in which most of the world's best players weren't present, but which of the 3 deserves more of the title? Not saying these are the only 3 that should be on the list. I hate circle jerking, or in this case 'self jerking'.

That's a pretty poor summation of what those players have done. TaeJa has done way more than just win Dreamhack recently.

Not to mention that Taeja used to be the best terran in the world, except for a decline due to wrist issues, so he is given the benefit of the doubt. I think it's obvious that if Taeja can practice properly he will be at the top.

What's more than the best record in the toughest teamleague, Proleague? What's Taeja's record in Proleague, 50%? What's better than a recent Code S champ plus currently ro8? What's better than the highest WCS points without opportunity to earn extra points in foreign tournies?

Last terran to win Code S was Mvp in 2012. :p I'm not even sure who you're referring to in the last paragraph, Bomber?
Anyways, it's silly to view individual tournaments in this way. You're the one putting a lot of weight on specific tournaments, such as this Dreamhack, or the OSL, the rest of us are viewing results as a gestalt, looking not only at multiple tournaments, but also consistency, relative level of play, and so forth. You're right about one thing though: There's no clear best in the world. This interview is very tongue in cheek.

I don't think it takes much bias at all to view Taeja is the best Terran in the world, the complaining about him seems much more related to people wanting to be contrarian than anything substantive. He's put up excellent results at every recent tournament he's been at, which is something none of the other top Terrans can claim. The reason people are talking about him as #1 is because he was very close to being #1 prior to Dreamhack and also because Bomber crashed and burned in the Code S Ro32.

Pretty dick thing to say after winning a major tourney.
LOL no you're just butthurt cuz Flash didn't win it all. Come on, bring Flash's so called GODLY proleague stats and lets see if it counts towards Blizzcon
Your post reads like a poorly thought out bait, I don't see how Flash even comes into it. It's more about Taeja disrespecting zerg/protoss pros by saying his race is 'so bad' after winning DH.
As to your random jibe. Flash was the proleague MVP ahead of an in-form Innovation, which sadly doesnt count for Blizzcon, but at least Flash didn't run to NA for easy points.
