Thanks to azurespace for making the original post!

STX passed along the announcement to KeSPA that they cannot keep running STX SouL. STX had wanted to continue their sponsorship of the team, and KeSPA offered that they would get sub-sponsors to help out STX if they would stay on board. However, the creditors rejected the suggestion, and the potential sub-sponsors backed out upon hearing the news.

The Soul players (P)Dear, (P)Classic, (P)Mini, (P)Trap, and (Z)Size had participated in the 'posting' process (a draft/auction to the remaining KeSPA teams) in secret on the 28th of August, with (T)INnoVation opting out due to joining team Acer. Only Classic was able to join a KeSPA team through posting, joining SK Telecom T1.

Coaches Calm and Park Jong Soo have decided to begin their military service, and Protoss player Mini has retired.

Some of the remaining players are looking to join foreign teams, while the remaining players and coaching staff will participate in the GSTL as Team "SouL." They are expected to acquire new players such as Hwangsin and SSaNaEE for this purpose. The head coach of SouL, Kim Min Gi and coach Choi Won Suk have made a contract for a team house around Incheon at their own expense to help gamers who want to continue their careers.

So the zombie team STX Soul will play in GSTL?
Kinda sad that STX has to go this way, but atleast the players have something to compete in.

GSTL got a lot more interesting to me personally.

And Classic going to SKT T1 is pretty damn cool

Edit.:
Kinda funny that the article was published at 11:56pm considering how everything was supposed to be announced September 1st

Even without Innovation and Classic their roster is still very formidable to any GSTL team. GL to them!

There is a second thread on that site about STX. I don't know if it has any additional information.

Team Soul huh.

Sucks that they don't have a sponsor anymore. It also sucks that the Soul Train isn't a team member.

As expected.
Classic to SKT T1? Well, someone can coach Bisu's terran now.
Also, Zombie STX in GSTL? Sounds.... ah, good luck.
Mini as someone mentioned at BW forum, was caught streaming BW on Afreeca.
Now, wait for news of disbandment of 2 more teams and possible formation of new one (or shall we count zombie STX as one?). Also, STX got passionate coaches.... maybe that's why they had such a good players.
Also, do we know who is left in SouL? I suppose hyvaa is still looking for new team (foreign one? who knows). Last is having health issues if i heard it right and so we are left with Dear and Trap from A-team and whoever left from B-team (Youngjoo, huh).

This is more about financial troubles of STX the company than it is about how well they did in SPL. They also stopped sponsoring a Korean soccer team.

At least they finished with a win. Respect to the coaches for renting a new team house at their own expenses and their support for the players. Now Innovation vs Scarlett showmatch to welcome him please.

Sad for STX SouL.

Disgusted that INnoVation's going to Acer (why ?) but so happy that Classic's coming to SKT1 ! Anyway, I hope Dear, Trap are going to find a good team soon.

It is only natural that many teams are folding as the interest for sc2 is nowhere near the peak it was in the brood war days. This and a huge influx of players and teams entering into an already established scene.

Wait a minute... so Zombie STX now has remnants of NSHS too (MadBull and SSanaEE that is) + hyvaa retires? http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/1lgppe/stx_classic_to_sktelecom/
Now that starts to sound tad bit cataclysmic.

Just speculating over lastshadow's recent tweet. And yes, Azubu falls apart and Woongjin is in STX's level of troubles.

Even after all the superstars get picked up, someone could probably make a strong team from the remnants of AZUBU, NSH, STX, and Woongjin.

That's what starts happening it seems. Question is: should Azubu and Woongjin also disband who will pick all the strong players there are? Do not forget, that in woongjin's case their b-team is comparable to some weaker a-teams.

The little Proleague paycheck doesnt help with a billion dollar debt unfortunatly.

So sad for the players and the 3 retirements already makes it look really bad.
Atleast the remaining players have a home and the NSH guys aswell

so sad that hyvaa is retiring

idk how to feel about innovation to acer

good for acer
good that innovation will pick up lots of foreign tournaments in the next 12 months

but does it really help the scene that korea's top player is now going to europe/NA?

WCS Korea in NA/EU. Been like this for a while now. Heck it's been like this for a lot of tournaments. I thought Innovation doesn't like foreign tournaments though?

I do not think that Innovation will really move into eu/NA, will probably stay with Scarlett/MMA and Axiom in Axiom's house. Granted i am worried for foreign tournaments, that do not have Naniwa or TaeJa as attending players.

Lets see how Innovation will fair in Europe first, he is on a heavy losing streak.

It seems to be the trend, too few SC2 fans in Korea.

If he's not laddering on EU/NA, practicing with EU/NA players, or becoming a known personality, then he's essentially a Korean mercenary sent to win tournaments.

STX Soul Mad props to the coaches for setting up that dorm. I wonder if they were able to use Proleague winnings for that.

So there are so many threads about retiring progamers, that none even bothered making a dedicated thread about hyvaa retiring as well? Or is it just not confirmed yet?

STX wanted to continue the sponsership and KeSPA offered that they will get sub-sponsers if STX will maintain it.

However, the creditors rejected the suggestion. The corperations that wanted to be sub-sponser also gave up by the news

Apparently most of those retired people were caught agreeing to or streaming BW on afreeca. So i would not wonder if we see a serious influx in amount of interest to SSL9 in Korea.

No more hilarious 6 pools and other cheeses.
I play protoss, but when I see Classic going to SKT... another protoss? They should really get a strong zerg player instead imo.

Kinda sad the winning team ended up disbanding, but we all saw this one coming.

Time to watch SSL/SRT. Looks like BW is going to get a lot of strong players again.

Does GSTL starting their next season mean it is less likely that they merge with Proleague this year?

People should realize that this has nothing to do with the state of sc2 popularity on the contrary WCS season 2 finals was quite a huge success. This is solely due to the company failing.

The easy way to get more sponsors is to recruit an LoL team. Worked for IM that's how they got LG.

Or C. There aren't enough tournaments/infrastructure to support double the amount of players than there were before the kespa switch

The real cataclysm here is many ex-bw players finishes paying their dues and leave sc2 altogether. I'd expect ten to fifteen, included very prolific ones

AH ty, on my phone it only showed the 13. This is indeed a crazy day. But right now this isn't about me or Bisu. This really sucks for those players on STX that wanted to continue SC2 careers. But I guess this is why Mini was playing BW last night against larva.

So the jist of this article is LG-IM could join proleague in place of STX Soul and the STX team will join up with NHSH to add another team to GSTL? Sounds good to me

The reasons are likely intertwined; with contracts being reworked it isn't unlikely that a lot of salaries dropped (especially for big name, relatively little result players) which makes playing the game not worth it anymore if you don't like it all that much in the first place.

I understand a lot of people are alarmed by this news, but the only surprise is probably Jangbi and maybe hyvaa if you stretch it. I expect more big names to retire very soon, and am more surprised Stork hasn't yet.

This can't possibly be true. IM's LoL teams were always really bad, while their SC2 team has been consistently doing very, very well. No way they got LG because of their LoL squads who barely manage to make top 16 in OCL and never get more than groupstage exposure.

I find it ironic that after we were told how Kespa players would dominate once they switched most of the teams collapse and their players are retiring in hordes.

Would be sad if Bisu retires but I would love him to see play BW again. I became a fan of him along with Jaedong because their rivalry hooked me up to watch pro BW league and play it for a while. And that's the first match I saw, Jaedong won the series 3-2 by 6pool. lol

So unfortunate to hear STX dropped sponsorship of Soul, hopefully they'll be able to find a new sponsor soon.

Glad to see the coaches keeping the player's best intentions in mind by opening a new team house. Let's see if their partnership with Quantic pays off.

I wouldn't be able to handle that T_T
Holy fuck the scene is volatile in Korea.

MVP not getting their own main sponsor for both their LoL teams and SC2 is just awful.
Yet another Finalist team have to disband and their members being picked up by other teams just seem wrong.

I very much doubt this but we will see.

Good luck to Soul, I hope someone picks up the flag soon or if not that at least the players find a new home.

Sucks to see all of the financial issues the KeSPA sponsors are dealing with, as if things weren't already volatile enough for the SC2 scene in Korea.

I hate to see that so much people are acting like ''omg sc2 is dead or dying''.

Get a grip on yourself and be realistic.

Yes old BW players are retiring from starcraft 2, I am at least happy that they gave it a try and decided to stop. So be it. Good luck to them in the future. Starcraft 2 will continue no matter what!

MVP disbanding is easily the worst rumor in the thread. :/

How does Prime expect KeSPA to find them a sponsor if they can't keep Soul going?

Well stx thingie has been a long time coming, just glad they stick around in gstl without stx (even if its just to proof that slashers yellow press style journalism was wrong afterall). Other than that this is what happens when the bw scene merges with an existing star 2 scene, there are too many teams atm and that will change, on top of that lol is really back over there so players retiring/teams disbanding is just natural, we are just downsizing to a reasonable level from just being way way oversized. Soul vs Acer should be really wierd in gstl.

Look Diablo3, they dont care about d2 community/player.

And MVP disbanding would be very, very sad news.

Yep after KeSPA switched, the korean sc2 scene was definitely oversaturated. Especially with OSL/GSL being combined in WCS KR. It was just a matter of time. Still crazy.

I really... REALLLYYY hate to say it... but Sc2 dying(In Korea)??

Seriously though what in the literal fuck... Kespa teams downsizing, Teams disbanding all over the place tons of players retiring etc. It looks Sc2 is hitting a pretty big rough patch in Korea right now, seems like NA and EU are still doing as they always have.

Could stuff like this close the gap between Foreigners and Koreans down the road? with the NA and EU scene doing decently and the KR scene seemingly losing support and players the game might actually become more global and end up coming out stronger overall perhaps?

Obviously all just random speculation I can't even really say the Sc2 scene in Korea is hurting at all from this as a fact, just seems that way.

As expected in sc2, very true that this amount of retiring never happened in bw and in wc3.

It had already started in BW before the SC2 switch. MBCgame being dissolved (basically 50% of all BW broadcast ending almost overnight). Estro, Hwaseung, WeMade teams were all dissolved before the switch. The switch may have exacerbated the situation but BW was hardly in its prime when it happened.

Well that's kinda obvious. It's not really dying and dare I say it will never be trully dead - it will just be at the semi-pro level just like before Kespa switched - better then BW is atm with Sospa only, but much worse then LoL for example. SC2 is gonna be Special Forces to LoL's BW.

No money, no stability, no real business. Kespa tried to make business out of it, they were unable to, they have to shrink (shrink SC2, get LoL bigger). It makes sense from business perspective.

The only thing I wish for is, that Blizz will let Kespa coaches and officials talk into their design decision for multiplayer part of LotV, so they make the game better to watch together and people will decide to come back...

to be fair, is half of the Korean teams disband, and half of the Korean pros retire, SC2 would still be in good shape in Korea. There's just way too many pro teams and pros. It is not sustainable.

ESTO + Hite = dead because of matchfixing

MBCGame = killed by Blizzard's lawsuit

WeMadeFox = personal financial problems as they got rid of their WC3 team + Counter Strike one

Hwaseung jumped the ship.

In War3, Korea hit a tough spot with the map scandal. There were a few good players retiring around then, but after that if I recall correctly the Korean scene was basically a bunch of Koreans on foreign teams due to War3's popularity abroad. If all of this continues this way in SC2 all the way down the line I could see something similar happening.

And you misinterpretate it. Will it get as back as bw in 06/07 ? Nope, but lol may not either, hell even bw was somewhat far away from that towards the end. BW scene already shrank to 7 teams + 8th team and lost mbc, what made anyone think star 2 could support 7 kespa teams + 6 esf teams + foreign teams? This was going to happen no matter what and it really shouldn't be such a big shock.

Yeah, Apollo is totally right with this. SC2 build up a scene that could support a certain amount of progamers economically. Than Kespa switched over, bringing more players in than viewers. Not all of the current Korean players can have enough exposure and now the amount of players has to shrink a little.

ESports aren't running on a money, they are running on a passion.
I remember almost everybody, who was in love with BW, hated LoL (we had good reasons then) when OGN just started promoting it. Today I watched the finals and it became transparent to me, no matter what I (or anyone else) think about the game or Riot's policy, Koreans like it, they feel passionate about it, they are proud of it. And it's a joy to be spectator of.

GOM couldnt do shit because sc2 wasnt on TV
OGN processed to find another flagship program to replace BW
The rest is history

I doubt people will appreciate this kind of talk, but it really should be considered that not having SC2 on TV with Kespa/OGN backing hurt it a lot in the local market.

Yes old BW players are retiring from starcraft 2, I am at least happy that they gave it a try and decided to stop. So be it. Good luck to them in the future. Starcraft 2 will continue no matter what!

You don't see (or don't want to see) the big picture in the background.

What is there else to see? It already has been said that the starcraft 2 scene is over packed. Economic crisis is hitting every company. But still the starcraft 2 scene is not dying.
If you can point me out what I overlooked that would be great

ESports aren't running on a money, they are running on a passion.

From company perspective yes maybe. definitely not from players perspective.
Many players (formerly wc3/scbw) dont like to play sc2, but they very like to attend tournaments (best example: idra).
scbw and wc3 were/are vrey different to sc2.

I think people are forgetting that the Korean scene basically doubled in size when Kespa switched without a proportional increase in interest.

Basically it will be back to pre-KespaSC2 days, maybe slightly better.

I'm fine with that.

This is really sad. I'm going to miss STX. But really, what was a shipping giant doing in E-Sports? Very odd place to advertise, unless BW was really huge in Korea and the shipping barons there watch E-Sports.

I read Hwangsin as Hwasin for a second and I was like THE RED SNIPER?! Then I remembered he was banned and checked again

Seemed like SC2 was getting back on its feet with HotS but now it really looks like (in Korea) its basically a dead game...

It sucks, but it's just the natural conclusion to the oversaturation. When Kespa switched, the amount of teams and player in Korea more than doubled - the ecosystem couldn't keep up. When this purge is done, things will be alive and well, but severely thinned out.

While this is bad news overall, I gained a lot of respect for the coaches for pulling such a bold maneuver as joining another team league with a decapitated lineup. If they win GSTL, maybe they'll attract sponsors again.

But they won't win GSTL because Axiom-Acer is going to win :p

The worst of the economic crisis happened in 2008-2009. It's 2013. BW was still strong during the recession. What's happening to SC2 right now has nothing to do with the economy and more to do with a competitor (LoL) kicking its ass. See Yahoo vs Google and Blackberry vs Apple.

A dark day for SC2 and the RTS genre in general, though somewhat expected. Strategy games are just not the flavor of the recent years

No one could hope that 16+ professional Korean teams could stay afloat, not even BW in its heyday could support that, so some consolidation is in order (I expect more to come, alas - should be ~8 professional teams after all has been said and done, more or less). Here's hoping the Korean SC2 scene stabilizes on that level and that the next PL won't be the last (a merger with GSTL would be fine though).

Lol, Lyn is my second favorite player and probably the most talented War3 player in terms of raw skill, but he is flat out also one of the most abusive BM users in the history of the game.

You are right. Main problem in sc2 is cleary the (longtime-)passion (the same as in diablo3). If you have passion, then you dont care so much about money or even you dont want money. But if you dont have passion, then you only play if you get paid for it or you quit it.
First happened in scbw and wc3 time, the latter in sc2. I follow esports since 2004 and my impressions says exactly so if I look the players.
edit: the same with the audience, the passion from the sc2 audience so much lesser than in scbw/wc3, in all countries around the world (except sweden and france).

I read "Hwangsin" as "Hwasin". Was excited for a moment.
They would have a great chance in GSTL if they still had Innovation, but now I'm not sure if Trap and Dear can carry it.

I can shake your hand on that ofcourse. But doing something for A LIVING, then pasion won't feed and pay bills for you. I was talking in an economical perspective

Do you think Mini or Movie, for example, were earning more when they were playing BW?
I honestly doubt it was the deciding factor.

I didn't said it has to be the deciding factor
Just getting paid so you can just relax and enjoy a normal life with a passion for BW?
And since you stay on that passion factor. Again : ONLY PASSION doesn't bring the food to the table

Plus, Mini might become somewhat a contender in SOSPA sanctioned league like Movie. You guys know that Movie is making a fortune streaming BW on Afreeca with donations flowing and ads revenues PLUS movie earned from leagues and such. All in all, Movie is DEFINITELY not starving and found a viable "career path" by continuing with the game he fell in love with. Win-win.

Not surprising at all. We've heard rumours about this for the last while. Best of luck to the players!

This is indeed sad. And even worse - it would appear that the current state of SC2 has also harmed orther parts of Korea. SC2 is not only killing eSports but also Korean soccer and Korean corporations. GJ Blizzard, thanks for killing Korea.

Except that has nothing to do with why STX disbanded. Their long time sponsor pulled out for reasons having nothing to do with SC2. People really need to stop throwing this around.

i'd say to expect more player cuts from teams regardless of kespa or esf to accomodate LoL players.

Sucks for STX but I don't mind things being shaken up a bit here and there. Surprised that no one wanted Dear though, that is quite odd.

I think what most people are overlooking, is that STX SouL is NOT disbanding. They lost their sponsor, and a few of their players are moving on to other teams, or retiring, but you will see SouL participating in the next GSTL next week! with New Star HoSeo players! AND with Quantic's Koreans!

Now who am I supposed to root for in pro league? This sucks. I really hope those other players find teams. I really like dear and hyvaa. I hope they find teams and hyvaa doesn't retire.

The only team left that I want to cheer for is Samsung Khan. This is gonna be a disappointing season

This is just another step in the decline of SC2. You see players retiring, teams disbanding, viewer numbers decline rapidly. I have been a SC2 fan since the release and i must simply say that SC2 has lost its atractivity in any way for me nowadays. And news like this prove that the majority of the players/pro players/viewers see it the same way.

I am bored of seeing Deathball vs. Deathball, and often you can see that a game is lost/won in the beginning phase, with a 10-20 min death animation. I dont care anymore.

And Blizzard has proven again and again that they are out of touch with the e-sports scene and that they simply dont care. See it this way: They sell a game 2-3 million times, earn 50-60 million dollars. The whole e-sport scene in three years hasnt generated any money for them, quite the opposite. So why should they care?

I stop watching streams, stopped watching gsl and any streamers. Its sad, but its true. SC2 has reached its peak a year ago, and now it trending downwards rapidly.

I am surprised only Classic got picked up by another team ... I guess this might show that the other teams are also either 1) in trouble 2) investing less in SC2. If I had to guess I would go with the latter. Hopefully the players who want to continue playing find new teams soon :/

Also GL to the players in GSTL and amazing to see the two coaches show that kind of support to there former players.

STX Soul wins Proleague; team explodes after.

I'm nowhere near STX Soul's biggest fan and I think this is a sad way for the team to go. Good luck to all players on and off the team, even the ones who retired.

What did the scene lose than made it boring to watch? Because personally i think that SC2 is far better than it used to be. Also, eSport is the not center of the universe. A large company can get in financial problems regardless of the SC2 scene. Incredible - i know.

Jezus, you're a real idiot. I'm pretty sure that a company that is about to bankrupt is not very keen on sponsoring any-fucking-thing. Maby some day you will have something better to do in your life than commenting on a game you don't even care about.

Hey wait , so let me get this straight, KeSPA is reduing the number of allowable players in a team's SC2 roster to accomodate more League of Legends players?

Dont teams liek KT Rolster ans SK Telecom T1 already have more than one LoL team?

The UI observer changes + the spawning option + replays of wcs released, all of them have been good changes.

off course, they were too late to make a difference.

Seriously. We all knew that SC2 was going to do some shrinking as competition between rival e-sports, but it doesn't make it any less painful to watch very skilled players retire and drop out as their teams fall apart. It's a rough enough couple weeks with big news of retirements and teams falling apart, we don't need it to be any worse with an onslaught of people running around rubbing everyone's noses in it. SC2 is far from dying, but is still going through a really tough time of pruning.

Even though I quit SC2 and switched to LoL a month ago, things like this make me pretty sad. SC2 has been a huge part of my life for the past 3 years, and now players are retiring and teams are collapsing every week.

Yeah, I am also wondering who I'll be cheering for. With JangBi gone, I don't think I can have as much passion for Stork (with how he is playing nowadays..) and Reality like before. I am thinking about CJ though.

True true. But it's not only the competition from titles such as Dota 2 and LoL. It is also the fact that the pre-Kespa SC2 scene already was saturated. Then Kespa players switched over from BW and people expect that the scene can suddenly accommodate almost 100 new players. It was a bubble that was doomed to burst, and now we have to clean up the mess. It is not so much that the scene is dying, but more the fact that there is too many teams and too many players.

Why would only Classic be signed in the auction?
Dear, hyvaa, and Trap are the Code S players.

The other teams don't want more players, they're all downsizing the sc2 teams.

Yes, but more specifically I was wondering why, of all the players, Classic was the one to get signed.
If SKT T1 had the money to pick up just 1 player, wouldnt they have picked up one of the Code S ones?

Classic performed very very well in Proleague in the second half after he switched to Protoss, Boxer might value him higher than the other players and if he was asking for less money I guess It's an easy choice.

Every kespa team is doing to downsize to 5-6 players and not take anymore. The korean scene is going to get a lot smaller. Koreans that are left in limbo will either retire or go back to BW.

I am bored of seeing Deathball vs. Deathball, and often you can see that a game is lost/won in the beginning phase, with a 10-20 min death animation. I dont care anymore.

I stop watching streams, stopped watching gsl and any streamers. Its sad, but its true. SC2 has reached its peak a year ago, and now it trending downwards rapidly.

Go back to elementary school, learn to read again and see why they disbanded.

Felt the same way when Oz disbanded. Best of luck to their players in the future.

See ya and don't let the door hit you on the way out. We don't need the doom harbingers in the sc2 community. All they do is bring negative energy to the scene.

True true. But it's not only the competition from titles such as Dota 2 and LoL. It is also the fact that the pre-Kespa SC2 scene already was saturated. Then Kespa players switched over from BW and people expect that the scene can suddenly accommodate almost 100 new players. it was fun while it lasted, though! the current scene just wouldn't have been the same without Kespa. i'm glad that a lot of new players come in and showed us some fun games and i hope that they find a way to stick around. players like soulkey, dear, sos, fantasy, jaedong, and lots of other strong contenders are really what keeps this scene from becoming too stagnant for me.

Surprised no one picked Trap/Dear considering how well they did in the last part of SPL.

Dear is Top5 protoss in the world, so I am pretty sure he won't have troubles finding a team. Even foreign one, if he wants to.

Classic probably just cost less because he has fewer individual results. Same thing happened with ForGG/TheStC/Supernova when oGs disbanded. Supernova was the best of the three and while the other two quickly joined foreign teams, Supernova held out for a better offer.

I always admired Classic and will be very happy with him joining T1, but I wish it didn't involve STX Soul disbanding. : /

Coaches Calm and Park Jong Soo did a phenomenal job in Proleague, with their win and speech being a bittersweet farewell.

At least they went out on a high, sad news but expected with the Korean scene being way over saturated with Kespa joining + when you main sponsor files for bankruptcy that is never good.

While we all saw this coming a mile away, when the dust finally settles its still a really sad development.
Hopefully once things stabilize more and all the team shuffles end, everyone joins KeSPA etc, then the players will have a more stable home.

fairly simple to explain, they didn't twitter it out to the world and it wasn't that easy to stalk people and see what they are doing. On top of that no alternative to BW, which was why BW got so big in the first place.
When it comes to games it has always been like that though. Kespa just forbid it in most cases.
