You have broken our Pizza Progress tier counter. After just 3 days of our week-long promotion with Papa John's, you guys have completed all 10 tiers. This means that there'll be cool stuff coming, and soon.
We didn't know exactly what to expect when we put this offer together. 50% off pizza is pretty cool, so we figured we'd get some interest, but the amount of support you've shown has been staggering. From all of us at EG, Liquid, ROOT, D2L, and OMG.TV, thank you very, very much.
Now, just because you guys smashed through all of our tiers, it doesn't mean our 50% off promotion goes away. You'll all still be able to get half-price pizza through the end of this weekend, and we'd ask that if you're going to eat pizza later this week, you please continue to help us out and order it through pizza.gg!
On to the cool stuff. Here's our schedule for delivering on the Tiers.
Tiers 1-4 (Giveaways): Anyone who's Tweeted at us (@EvilGeniuses, @TeamLiquidnet, @TeamLiquidPro and @ROOT4ROOT) and @PapaJohns with proof that they've ordered a pizza is eligible to receive prizes from Tiers 1-4. At the end of the week, we'll be contacting the winners and setting up delivery of your prizes!
Tiers 5 & 7 (Live Streamed AMA & Pizza-Eating Contest): We'll be streaming these this week! Dates and times will be announced soon.
Tiers 6 & 8 (Cross-Game Showmatches, iNcontroL/TLO Switching Teams, Liquid/EG Showmatch): Since many players in all games are busy at events this week, we'll be doing these next week after they're all back. We'll make sure you to update you guys when we know exactly when!
Tier 9 (EG.LoL Music Video): We'll be doing a community poll next week, after Snoopeh and YellowPete are back from China, for the music video's song selection!
Tier 10 (Community Pizza Party): We'll be updating you guys with the pizza party's date and location in a few weeks. It will be at a North American tournament later this year.
Again, thank you so much for all of your support! We hope you'll join us on Friday and Sunday for the live-streamed events!
Sincerely,
EG, Liquid, ROOT, D2L, and OMG.TV

Wow, having no idea about the numbers I was afraid it might not be filled up in time, but turns out, people love cheap pizza, haha. Well done everyone.
Owning pizzas like e-sports bosses! And here for a minute I thought the progress recently had dropped off. Welp, time to order another pizza! GOGO ESPORTS

Time to hit the treadmill though right? I think I gained weight just reading about pizza and hearing about pizza on every stream I watch for the past 3 days.
Wouldn't in-game achievements like cheaper tickets, food, gear and stuff be great? I hope this is future of esports, actual games having great sponsors and people being rewarded for playing the game with more than just virtual achievements.

lmao I wonder how many pizzas it actually took at the end of the day. I think they underestimated the demand, but heck 50% for a pizza. I'd think anyone with half a brain that likes pizza would try it for the hell of it just because it's cheap as hell.

Well, the promotion made it onto slickdeals, so I bet a ton of people jumped on this that probably know nothing about and don't care for esports. Hopefully they took some time to look into it.
I ordered some Papa Johns two days ago without realizing this promotion was going on. I searched google for "papa johns promo code" and PIZZAGG came up with 90% success rate. I thought the codeword was a little funny but I had no idea it was for this! I am happy to have contributed I wonder how many others supported esports without realizing it.
These tiers were self-imposed right? I'm curious what sort of expectations Papa Johns had with this deal. They have 50% off deals all the time (like in Houston, if our football team won then it's 50% off) so they should have a lot of data to determine how widespread this sort of deal reached. Anyway, it's cool that the expectations of those behind Pizza.GG were reached so quickly.
And I'm still ordering two this Saturday most likely > For those in other countries wondering how we made it happen, just know that a lot of American nerds can eat like our morbidly obese countrymen and not get horrible illnesses. Evolution i guess?

It would be interesting to see how many codes were used through the affiliate site(pizza.gg) in comparison to people just straight up using the code going through Papa John's since they got the code off a deal site. Then you can see how much eSports actually had an effect on this or not. But seriously this could've been the most obscure topic or scene and if it had a "no strings attached" 50% off code with it, it would've spread like wildfire like it did and get used like it did. Just like it's been done thousands of times with similar Papa John's codes on deal sites going back several years.

Far too low.

got better pizza for a cheaper price at the grocery store. Should get the digornos sponsor. Anyways was a cool idea besides the tiers being stupid :/ must of been a ceo/marketing decision and not a player decision making it always a bad one
As I'm from France (euh didn't had the opportunity to help here), I would like to thank all the esports fans and supporters in America for doing such an amazing job, we love you guys !!! Love you so much for your support of esports ! I'm so happy that Tier 8 will happen , thank you !

Yeah, this. For maybe a day or two it was ESPORTS, baby, but it's guaranteed to have pretty quickly switched to "50% off pizza for anyone who bothers to check coupon sites."
This is so damn big. Let this be a lesson to every potential major non-endemic sponsor out there - we exist and exist in staggering numbers. Support what we love and you'll get our support. Bring your money into esports...we will not let it be a wasted effort!
Thanks so much TL! I think I just ate the 10 pounds I lost back in pizza and if I haven't yet, I will do so tonight. Third time's the charm, I'm pretty pumped that not only can I get a decent deal on pizza but show some support for SC2!

I just can't wait until the Pizza Eating contest ends in someone vomiting. It's something we can be proud of to say that the community made HuK vomit.
I imagine it's private, but I wonder if anyone will slip what the numbers on the tiers were. Possibly a breach of something, but I am very curious where the waypoints were set at for this foray.
I don't eat pizza, but I ordered one to support esports and gave it to my neighbors. Watching their kid's eyes pop out of his sockets was worth it, total surprise.

Aw, darn, I thought maybe this was entirely limited to eSports peeps, heh. So I guess they could just say "50% off pizza", advertise normally, and leave out the eSports bit, and they'd still have made 'tier 10' sales all the same. Ah well, at least they're interested in eSports

Probably the majority of the people who took advantage of this promo never even heard of esports. I saw this on slickdeals and likeacoupon. I saw a guy linked it on his facebook and he doesn't even know what starcraft is.
Even if people are buying in from outside the esports community, that is still a fairly strong example of our reach as a community. Give us 50% off and the whole internet is on it.

Yeah, I would be interested in how much pizza they'd go through at full price (or close to full price). Since that would only be actual esports sales, and showing the buying power of our market and not just the power of half off (and our ability to spread it to social media enough for it to go mainstream).

Thats exactly the point why this is really good. Sponsors like Razor or Steelseries are great but they are already known for people who are in the gaming community. If eSport wants to keep growing you need at some point viewers that never played.

The thing is you are right but 99.9% of all commentators in these "pizza" threats dont care about.
There is something i noticed about the esport "business" that is very unique and a huge thing: The receiving end of the industry (viewers) want that the teams, players and organizations have success and MAKE MONEY. If you watch any streamer like demuslim or tlo and turn on the stream chat you will see somebody saying "why i dont get adds?" in no time. In a time where people say "what? a company wants to make money? These evil bastards kill them with fire!!!!" that is a huge deal because have you ever heard somebody saying "damn why i don´t see more adds during the superbowl i want to support the Giants"? I don´t think so.
If eSport is able too keep that "i want to support you" atmosphere within the viewership community and is able to sell it to "big market" sponsorship it could have the chance of beeing mainstream.
The first time we promote this kind of action in the community is the most important. After that, you guys can go tell other mainsteam companies : See, we can deliver very good results with esports. We are a growing dynamic market jabba jabba... insert marketing pitch. Huge doors just opened.
I hope, in the near future, we'll see that kind of things on a worlwide scale or at least available for a few more countries.

Interesting. I wonder if the Swedish version of the golden arches is any better than ours. I only eat their fries because the rest makes me feel horrible shortly after.

Why do you eat pizza with your hands you ask ?
A long time ago, pizza was a dish made by really poor people for really poor people. It was the meal of the farmers and fishermen of Italy. The meal of the working class of Napoli. There was a lot of variety, but the two main pizze were 1) a simple composition of mozarella over a wheat crust for the farmers (it was called white because : no tomato) or 2) red pizza : tomato and small fishes over the same crust, for the fishermen. It was the meal they took with them for a hard day of work. For the fishermen it was also close (calzone), because they would spend their time on a boat.
You can note that there is no meat in the original recipe. Because, the peasano had no money for that since they were poors as dirt. It was litteraly a dish made with what was avalaible : grain, tomato, local cheese for the farmers and small fishes for the fishermen.
It also happens that it was crazy good, so it kinda went viral and pizza is now a worldwide hit that you can find everywhere. But still, at the beginning pizza was the dish of the paesano who worked with his hands and eat with his hands. The dish of the small people.
Sure it's old story. But to me it's still funny when someone says : "my suit is too expensive to eat that pizza with my hands". Sometimes it's good to remember we're not that different from those poor paesano (who went to spread their delicacy all over the world btw).

It isn't weird.
I've run a papa john's store in the UK and can attest that "american" style pizza, aKa Deep pan Pizza is greasy as hell a lot of the time. If you've never had greasy pizza then you've been very lucky or they didn't use masses of cheese/meat. Take a look at the bottom of your pizza box next time, it will be soaked with the stuff.
Italian style, aKa Thin Base pizza, tend to be less greasy because they use less cheese. hot cheese is greasy as hell!!!! how you cooked it is besides the point, btw stone baked or pizza oven. Italian pizzas use less cheese and different types of cheese than an american styel deep pan and are therefore less greasy.
I'll be ordering two pineapple pizzas tonight for TL DotA during G-1.
Also, I eat pizza with a fork, and not because of any grease that may or may not be on it, just because I feel like it's cleaner since I touch doorknobs, phones, etc. Now if I'm in the city getting pizza and eating it outside, I'll use my hands for the sake of inconvenience of getting utensils.

That's ultra weird logic since outside you're exposed to much more "unclean" doorknobs, phones, etc.
I would so totally do this if the reviews for the Papa Johns in my area didn't read, believably, like they shit in the box and moulded it into pizza form.
Goddamnit Philadelphia.
I may try this tomorrow in spite of that. For eSPORTS.

When streamer get to the point where you have 1 minutes of ads for 3 minutes of stream (The typical Ads regime on TV), I'd bet you that people will not beg for Ads.
Ads are a very inefficient model to financially support your favorite e-sport player or team. With direct contribution 100% of the money you spend goes to the intended target, and it does not waste your time.
Take a 5K-avg streamer... assuming that it is the same 5K all the time... if each where to send $1/month, such streamer would do $60K/year that way alone... plus possibly some 'static sponsor' (i.e logo and other stuff that you are free to pay attention to, but general non intrusive -- contrary to Ads that basically forcibly preempt your attention).
Even if you follow 10 streams in a given month... that still is $10/month to get entertained... iow less than 1 PJ pizza a month!
otoh, direct support is not easy in the e-sport world: for instance I figured: heck instead of bying another pizza, why don't I give the $15 it will cost me, o TL... after all TL.net is a great site that provide me with a great service and a lot of entertainment... well, I searched the website for a 'donate' link somewhere... could not find one :-(
One thing that could be useful, is a 'player-association' driven website that take care of being a 'donation' point for players. Setting up the infrastructure to receive payment via Credit-card, debit-card, e-money etc... can be a lot of work for each and every player... but if there were a (or even a few) centralized websites that player could register too, and that would offer to e-sport fan a channel to direct money to their favorite players... that could be a great and economical way to go about it...
I wonder how many of the buys were actually from TL and not from Promo code app like RetailMeNot. After thinking about it I highly doubt TL contributed as much as those apps did to this little event. Hopefully I'm wrong :D
Pretty sure that this bodes well for our community as a whole. Papa Johns may have started this, but once everybody else realizes what a preposterously large market they can tap into we'll be seeing larger corporate sponsors all over the place.

o_0, In Atlanta, Papa John's was hands down the cheapest option for me, even without the coupon. A large pizza would usually set me back by 20 dollars+ (including tax + tip ) with anyone else. Maybe you have cheaper options in the smaller cities, but over here, Papa John's was definitely the cheapest.
I really wanne see the TL dota players play SC2! i even wonder if i could beat em + When is this gonna commence ? cause i seen the pizza contest but i did not know when it was gonna happen.
so whats with all this pizza stuff lately, why do people all of a sudden care about buying papa johns pizzas? I read papa johns is offering 50% off, which ofcourse is a good deal , but im just curious as to why so much people seem to care about papa johns sales figures. Are they sponsoring team liquid or something?

Standard for a pizza in NYC is like, 14-16$ for a cheese, 16-18+ for topping pizza. Papa Johns is not bad at all.
Yeah, depends on what you consider pizza. We have a local chain that sells large pizza for 7.50~, but they taste horrible tbh, a decent pizza is usually like 15$ atleast.

Yeah, actually just realized at those mediocre 99cent pizza places that have popped up like crazy here you can get a pizza for 8$ lol. But they're crap even compared to papa johns imo... toppings goes up to like 12$

They could easily do the whole promo at zero profit to get that many more potential customers. I'm wondering what the impact of meeting their goals is on the future sponsorship opportunities.

Holy crap, that is some expensive pizza. There's one big chain here, Kotipizza, but the small pizza places are much better and cheaper in my opinion (they are usually owned by immigrant entrepreneurs). And to find the good places.. word of mouth & trial and error. You can pay 10€ for a crap pizza and get an amazing one for 7€. But man, 15$ at least? Gee.

There's a couple of big chains in Norway. Pizza ranges from, usually $25 for a small one, and up to $35 for a big one. Once I had them deliver it to me. One big pizza, one bottle of cola, and one extra sauce. $76 is what I ended up paying..And it wasn't even really that good

What the flying fuck, $76? Did they deliver from a limo and hire a celebrity to present it to you?

Welcome to Norway. We earn more than most so we have to pay infinitely times more than most.
Thank god for Italian people doing their own businesses. Self made and baked in a stone oven with ash traces on the bottom. 9€, i guess the price is ok when i read this thread.

To be fair, with all that oil money you cheated us out of, I am fine with you getting boned on prices :D

Denmark is still the better place to live imo. Its not only the prices we're getting fucked on..but maybe thats just how most view their own country I guess.

Tier 7 - EG pizza eating contest between Machine, HuK, and DeMusliM casted by djWHEATDone, was awesome <3
Tier 8 - iNcontroL and TLO will switch teams for a week and act as head coaches in an EG vs. Liquid off-race showmatch - Nope
Tier 9 - EG.LoL will film a special music video cover, with the song selected by the community - Nope
Tier 10 - EG, Liquid, and ROOT will host a community pizza party at an upcoming North American live event - Didn't they try to organize this? But hasn't happened. As said below they have 2 chances left WCS Season 3 Finals & BlizzCon
I can understand some of the delay, but it's infuriating that we don't hear any updates. It would be nice if they let us know what is happening once in a while.

Not to sound like a complete cock, but it's kind of like false advertising. I know if you filed a law suit it would probably be hit back due to i don't think when it was released there was ever a time date for the Tiers to be fulfilled but its pretty close to false advertising when you don't follow through after wiping the floor with the promotion in super fast time
can't speak to the prizes like mousepads, shirts etc.. those should have gone out.
I've asked management about this a few times and they all are aware we need to get this done. I am not responsible for any of this but I am always annoyed when things like this happens and nobody says anything so I am sharing what I know. I have faith it will all get done.. especially in my mind the really important ones like physical awards that were supposed to go out. I do however think this will be done on eSports time which means anywhere between now and 2023 is a safe bet.
Joking aside please try and understand that while it is bad these haven't been done yet it isn't like this was some malicious scam OR the people involved aren't super busy and really have no reason to not do this. Liquid/EG/Root are some of the most busy organizations in eSports. They promised to do these things so there is no excuse for NOT doing them but there is reason for being a bit late. You can judge that as you will but again I wanted to share what is going on in the background.

tier 8 could happen if EG and Liquid both make it to the sc2l finals at dreamhack bucharest.

I think that what people are angry about is the lack of communication about this.

They'd never do that in a serious event, as much as it would be epic, not to mention event rules cockblocking it for a start.

Maybe you didn't eat all those pizzas for nothing after all!
maybe advertising it before it happens would be a good move too.
tbh if I was papa johns I would have lost interest by now. I mean you guys don't get what you were told asap you bring out the pitchforks. I highly doubt they will ever do anything in starcraft again given how toxic you guys react to any delay (and apparently nobody seems to acknowledge the fact how super busy all parties involved are).
I'd much rather see us bitch about MLG droping shadowrun in 08, even though they said they would keep it on the circuit if an online tournament would fill out all slots (which it did).

Yeah it's a crazy idea that after shattering engagement expectations in a 3 day period, the community would be upset when, months later, multiple levels of prizes have yet to given and communication has flat-lined. What a bunch of whiners.

It's essentially the same problem that players in tournaments face, only a larger public scale. In the past it was especially worse, but now it's still a little unknown to a good majority of the public, I think. People who win stuff don't immediately get handed over the money or prizes (even though there is the ceremony on stage etc). There is a bunch of paperwork and legal shit to do, as well as the company choosing to give up the money to make their quarters look best or whatever. On a more understandable level, it's sort of like doing a mail in rebate. You will get it if everything is done right, but it doesn't come until the one in power decides it will.
OH, also: Tomorrow we are announcing all the Papa Johns prizes and dates!! Really cool stuff. Its taken a while, but we think it will be worth it and you’ll all really enjoy what all the teams involved came up with!
Read the article.. could not have put it better. The naivety of the people in this community is particularly disturbing. There is no accountability or any sort of regulatory body enforcing the promises laid out. People whine, bitch and try to shut down any bad light shown on them/organisation as "killing esports". I am happy to say I was never a part of this "pay for this or you wont see it" BS. If I enjoy something, I will voluntarily offer my money - I dont need to be forced to do so to continue my entertainment.
For everyone out there, spare a thought before your money goes into someones pack of smokes or 4th keyboard.. spend it wisely and to those who deserve it.

Still announcing announcements after all these years Inc?
You know, after all this false promises, delays, announcement of announcements of announcements, BS hype and idra pretty much sharing his feelings of what this community means to him - i gotta say, lotsa dogged (mindless drones) out there!
Hopefully the nicer end of esports mans up and shoves the crappy PR stunts aside and respects the people that enable them to make a living.

Wait. What "regulatory body" in the world enforces promises? You want an organization in esports that tracks down people or organizations that break informal promises?
