Does he? Please break it down into numbers for me, because its not just a bold statement, but also a wrong one even if you take out the exaggeration.

Name me a more popular/famous SC 2 player than Idra.

Boxer, Flash, Jaedong..The list goes on..

I said SC 2 and not BW.

Two of those are actively playing and one is a coach/manager. I'd bet they still have more fans overall (around the globe) compared Idra.

Why are we even talking about player popularity?

So it means that MLG will be an american (residant) only tournament ? Euros will compete solely in IEM/DH and koreans in GSL/OSL ?

They are Starcraft 2 players (except Boxer). They may not have started out as such, but neither did Idra. All of TBLS have huge fan bases, and large parts of those fanbases followed (or were already here) them to Starcraft II. If we were talking about players that never played anything else competively, then the discussion becomes pretty pointless because there aren't a lot of players like that.

No, they'll compete together like right now for the money but the WCS points will go to the players coming from the tournament's region.

That might had been true if the BW and SC 2 fanbase would be the same. It is not. The BW scene was almost non-existent in the west while it was very much alive in Korea. With SC 2 it has pretty much flipped.

And why we are talking about popularity here is because some people claimed that viewers only cares about the "highest level of play", which is obviously not true.

"Idra has a larger fanbase and outreach than pretty much the whole Korean scene put together" not true either

of course viewers care about more than just pure skill, but idra is not the be-all-and-end-all foreigner lol

I'm getting tired of people like you who try to say our scene was almost non-existent. Our home base was big enough thank you very much that we would cause all kinds of havoc community wise and when it came to winning polls. Before SC2 try to find a poll we didn't show up for. Please do. Where the f you think TL.net is winning the internet came from? Cannot really say that anymore because it isn't really allowed anymore. We made a lot of emo and wannabe writers to real writers mad at us. lol

I personally wouldn't give zero fucks about a tournament without top players (Koreans). Lets say MLG would become western players only. I most likely wouldn't watch it because of the fact that the best players are not there.

It's obvious that some people watch a tournament for X player that is popular, but "highest level of play" is a big part of it just as well.

Because Boxer Flash and Jeadong dont play SC2 ? If the creteria is that the person is not allowed to be a professional in BW idra is also no allowed as an example because, you know he was one of the few actually foreign BW pros.
Also MarineKing und MVP have a huge following, not everything is definied by stream viewers outside of tournaments.

Just because ppl like to watch Idra rage on ladder doesnt mean they wish to see a Idra vs Gretorp final.

I see. Now if you're fighting for WCS points and you get to fight Life in the 1st round ... unlucky. Seedings and brackets will have an even bigger impact than before for foreigners.

Speaking in terms of the Killer vs. ThorZaIN match-up, I don't think any conclusions should be drawn based on that match-up alone. We've seen much better play from foreigners than that in the past and to say differently would be nothing less than slander.

To get more on to the topic, I think its important not to jump to conclusions. It would be ridiculous if Blizzard wanted to lock off Korea from the rest of the world so to even insinuate that there will be a lack of foreigner vs. Korean play in the future is ridiculous. I also think its presumptuous to assume that this development has anything to do with the future of the NA and EU scenes. There's nothing to support that and jumping to the conclusion that Blizzard-run feeder tournaments are coming seems ridiculous until we know more.

As for the actual Korea-centric anouncement, I think consolidation is important. Or at the very least more marketing and emphasis put on cohesion between the two leagues so that they don't feel totally isolated. How that can be facilitated or if it will be, I don't know, I'm just going to wait patiently and see what this turns out to be. A few major tournaments scattered throughout the year with alternating GSTL/proleague would be my preference and the same alternating scenario with OSL and Code S. Having a couple very hyped tournaments of each without them going on at the same time so each can get the attention they deserve. Again, I'm not sure how that's done, but since the audience for both leagues seems to be the same group of people, no one wins by competing for their attention. The only issue is, neither league can just go dark to let the other one run if they want to survive. I guess that might be where Blizzard comes in though.

I just hope that all of this hype doesn't end with Blizzard announcing some throwaway tournament like a Blizzard Cup. The messaging seems to indicate otherwise, but I guess we'll see.

Hell nevermind that. We've seen much better play from Thorzain, nevermind foreigners. He might not have the killer Korean instinct but he's probably the best foreigner in the scene for gaining massive build order advantages with micron perfect timing attacks. I remember one tournament where he hit a timing in TvP 25s before anyone was ready for it and won with it, every single game.

He did say he was ill a day or two before as well.

if the "best players" are playing every day you start not caring and just skip the games cause you can see them playing next day or wtv.. now if you have region tournaments with the best from each place.. and then reaching climax in the final event with the best in the world im sure everyone would tune in to see it

It was an exaggeration mostly to point out what a sad shape the Korean SC 2 scene currently is in. Very few Koreans are watching foreign events at all, so whatever the amount of Korean fans Korean players have has almost no bearing on the viewership for MLG, Dreamhack etc.
What generates a large amount of viewership for MLG is the popularity of the players in the west and I wouldn't put any Korean over an Idra, Grubby or Stephano in that.

There is a reason why Sundance time and time after again has said that an all Korean affair is an issue for them.

Im conflicted here.
I like the idea of having a Blizzard support an esports league similar to riots involvement, but then again, it is blizzard we are talking about, and we already have successful leagues that are doing fine.
What do you mean you heard me during the night, these are quiet pants!

Except MC. I'd alway watch MC over IdrA and probably over Grubby. Between him and Stephano - it's a tie.

The thing is - IdrA with his "Macro macro macro" style was rather boring to watch. The only really entertaining thing about his play was his trash talking and rage quitting. And I'm not sure that's really entertainment esport would like to market...

Zvt was almost never boring to watch.
Idra game shows how amazing a Zerg with good mechanics could be, great creep spread and muta harass, eating drops and run by etc.

It was only until infestor style became dominate that he really began the downfall

That might had been true if the BW and SC 2 fanbase would be the same. It is not. The BW scene was almost non-existent in the west while it was very much alive in Korea. With SC 2 it has pretty much flipped.

And why we are talking about popularity here is because some people claimed that viewers only cares about the "highest level of play", which is obviously not true.

Idra never had good mechanics... That's a myth comparable to Unicorns.

There is a reason why Sundance time and time after again has said that an all Korean affair is an issue for them.

Asians like me don't watch Western events because a.) too many foreigners b.) times are horrible, esp MLG, and c.) weekend events are balls

This sort of exaggeration does not help your argument. You cannot make up facts and then when people find out, you just say "it's an exaggeration" and expect your argument to hold.

You also are not providing facts for any of your allegations. You have not provided any source for how "very few Koreans watch foreign events", how "Idra, Grubby or Stephano" would bring more viewers than "any Korean", and then you attempt to quote an industry insider's words to support your argument when really, you have not proven that he is talking about the same thing as you do.

I am a dirty Protoss bullshit abuser
