Quantic Gaming is proud to announce that Madeleine “MaddeLisk” Leander is the latest player to join our StarCraft II team.
MaddeLisk, a very popular Swedish Zerg player who is currently aiming for her Ph.D. in Mathematics, now joins Flo Yao as a member of Quantic’s skilled female progamers.
We talked to MaddeLisk about her past experiences as a progamer, joining Quantic, and her future plans.
What made you want to join Quantic?
“After I left my old team the plan was to stay teamless and just focus on what’s important to me, which is improving my play, and I couldn't really do that in my former team. When I first got contacted by Quantic I was still under the impression that being teamless was the better choice, but I talked to some players on Quantic and they spoke very highly of the team. I also talked to the management which gave me a really good impression and I realized quickly that they had the same goals as me and it became an obvious choice. I am very thankful for this opportunity and I am also really happy to be on the same team as flo ♥ ”
With the majority of the Quantic team living in either North America or Korea, what sort of challenges does that present to you?
“There might be some challenges regarding time zones, but I don’t see that as a problem. Having practice partners in two time zones is a good thing.”
You mentioned you’re living in Sweden. Any plans to move into the Quantic Training Facility in California?
“Maybe^^”
We are pleased to have MaddeLisk join our Quantic family and look forward to seeing her perform well at future events!
Check out the rest of the interview here!

I wish her good luck in Quantic! She's awesome and Quantic too. Nice combo!

Cool that she's going for a PhD. Strange that she's spending serious time in SC though. Or at least the people doing PhD in math that I know of are usually quite busy with that.
|
What team did she used to be on?

She must also spend a lot of time at the gym considering what Incontrol said about her lifting 150 lbs... A very busy girl indeed.

Quantic needs to proeprly start marketing their players as individuals rather than lumping them together and just hoping one succeeds in results.
They already had great players before the Vile merge, now with the vile merge they have a lot of toys in the toybox, but keeps saying: "We have ntohing to play with"

hmmmm good player, but i probably wouldn't.

Yeah, that's nuts. I'm in the middle of mine, and I have a few hours a week at most to devote to games. As far as I can see she's already got one publication (or is this her thesis?); reading it now. It's pretty cool. Edit: almost forgot... Major props to her.

I agree 100%. Illusion is one of the most marketable players out there, being incredibly good, young North American player. If they market him well he could become the face of the NA scene in a year or two. Also, players like Sase and Spanishiwa are both well known. I would love to see them do promotional showmatches showcasing those players and expanding the fan bases of their other less-known players.

seems like Quantic barely used Flo in anything important...and as far as I know she hasn't gotten a lot better. So they sign another female to make another splash for 'sex-appeal?' Shoulda just went with that aliuj girl lol
|
I've heard her name, but never heard what rank she is or if she has any results. Feel like that should be somewhere more prominent in this.
|
Best of luck to her! I hope to see more of Quantics female members in big tournaments such as IPL or MLG =) Gogo girls!

Sweet, more token females getting sponsored.
That said, she does sound a baller all-round, but it's hardly as if she'll get the time to practice and be top tier if she's working on a PhD surely?
|
she should change her name to Mathelisk
|
Congratulations to you, Maddelisk. Hoping you'll get to grow as a player; spread that SC2 love.
|
Cool, that's nice for her. At first I used to thing that she was just some random girl riding along on the fact that she was female, but after seeing her in some smaller tournaments I acually think that while she may not be the best player out there, she certainly isn't bad and considering she's currently working on a PhD it's even more obvious that she must have some sort of talent and a lot of commitment to remain as good as she is.
GL HF in quantic!
|
I'm really happy for her, she deserves it. Furthermore, not being the only girl in the team is a huge boost for her. Quantic could become the girl power house :p

She doesn't stream often but when she does it's pretty clear she has improved a lot from living in the Quantic House.

She's a smart girl, all the best to Madde.

Good pickup by Quantic. I wasn't going to post anything initially, but just want to run a little against the rampant misogyny in this thread with a short recap of my initial reaction.
I remembered Maddelisk's name pop up occasionally the the middle-region of brackets in big tournaments like Dreamhack - though I'd never seen her play since she was far from the main stage. So my initial thought on reading the post headline was "oh, cool, Quantic still has the money to pick up new players. And they're grabbing an up-and-comer with potential. I always hope that works out for a team."
Only after reading the main thread did I find out Maddelisk is one of StarCraft's small pool of competitive female players. Didn't change my opinion of the signing.
TL;DR: Ignore all the Negative Nancys above.

Great move by Quantic for signing this talented and beautiful gamer!

I always have a bit of mixed feelings about signing female players because of the reasons which were discussed endlessly in various threads regarding this topic. I don't know much about her, but she sounds like a friendly player. About the PhD: I always had the impression that a lot of gamers are quiet intelligent although some discussions seem to give a wrong picture. Well, good luck for Maddelisk, I hope we can minimize the whole gender discussion this time.
Edit: To the guy who complained about the fact that this is happening because of the existence of a certain part of the female body: It's ok to address this problem, but one can say that in a more accurate and less disrespectful way.
|
so how do the quantic members control their hormones? maddelisk so hot.
|
She's getting a doctorate in mathematics so she surely loves math...I wonder if joining Quantic is just something for fun to do on the side? I thought being part of a team meant you were seriously interested in winning tournaments. I guess if she can do both at the same time its okay...this girl sounds pretty amazing :O. And she's beautiful. Like the perfect girl

Very exciting Congrats to Quantic and to Maddelisk!!

You don't see the same sort of thing as much for Scarlett, etc.
One hell of an impressive list of personal accomplishments, just wish I knew more about her as a player. If she keeps improving as people say she's been, then hopefully that will happen.

I <3 her, I feel she is one of the only deserving females to be on a team, the rest seem gimmicky.
|
This is great news! MaddeLisk is actually a strong player, and signing to a team like Quantic should see her improve. There's always criticism when female players are signed but don't go on to bigger/better things, but you have to look at the fact that female players make up such a tiny percentage of the total pool of pro players, and the vast majority of those pro's will sign with teams and not go on to bigger or better things either.
|
big, big mistake by Quantic. I met her on the ladder recently and she didnt gg when I beat her!
+ Show Spoiler +not that I blame her, my cannonrush was pretty abusive.
Edit: typo
|
I met her on ladder a time too, she wasn't really that bad I think. Probably even one of the better females out there. Altough I really feel that if she was a man, she would have to be better at sc2.
edit: Fuck I love chicks with muscles.
|
Congratz to both parties, a doctorate and progaming at the same time, thats sick. And in math to boot, i think i might be in love.

Agreed - I barely got through mine with no other commitments. It's not the workload so much as the motivation - you have to be a real self-starter, as you are all but guaranteed to hit some serious roadblocks along the way, and it takes a lot of willpower to push through them. Progamers might actually be good at that side of it as they are no strangers to mental discipline, but I would think there would definitely be times when focusing on SC2 seemed way more appealing than continuing to beat your head against a wall.
Anyway, all the best to her on both the gaming career and study fronts.

Looks like a master's thesis, too long for a journal publication (though my background is biology, so i guess maths could be different).
Since Naniwa left Quantic I guess that freed up quite a bit of cash for recruiting new players .

She wouldn't have been picked up if she wasn't an attractive girl, it's not misogynist to claim this at all. In fact I'd argue that it's more misogynistic to advocate that girls be given opportunities not open to their male equivalents. Especially given she is doing a PhD, you would have thought that would potentially cramp her potential to improve.

How long for people to understand that is not the biggest factor for a player getting signed? Incontrol has a 30% winrate, yet gets thousands of viewers when he streams and is one of the most recognizable people in esports. Machine is in a similar boat, but is pretty famous for his Kingston commercials.
You do understand this is a community of turbo nerds? You could be a chick in diamond and if you aren't obese you're going to get over 100+ viewers doing nothing. Hell, if you're Masters and female that's more rare than male and GM.

I love it how Starcraft players talk about women working on a PhD in mathematics as if they were picked up for their bloody sex appeal, as if that's the only thing she's got going for her.
Depending on her work, she'll probably be running a lot of simulations or suffering a lot of mental blocks though, so SC2 probably helps loosen things up.

Depending on her work, she'll probably be running a lot of simulations or suffering a lot of mental blocks though, so SC2 probably helps loosen things up. To be fair, she wasn't picked up for her starcraft 2 skills. What an outrageous claim?! If not for her Starcraft II skills, why on Earth would Quantic pick her up? Exactly. WATCH OUT GUYS HIS MUM WHO HAS NO IDEA ABOUT SC2 CAN PICK A CASTER WHEN SHE HEARS ONE

qunatic really loves swedes
gl to her, hope she'll improve and make even bigger name for herself

Is she still together with Snute?
|
She definetly deserves this as A PLAYER, shes actually pretty good, raped me on ladder.
|
Ooh math major gogogo!

Why would a phd student join a programming team?
Aren't both significant drains on ones time?
|
This is soooooo silly. So many great players without teams and you continue to pick up these lower tier ones.
|
So like...is she good at starcraft? i didnt her any mention of her League, other than just some experience in some female cups..l0l
|
Wise, beauty, strong and playing sc2. Where have you been all my life?

Are Quantic picking her up for this or what? The statement doesn't really specify what kind of role she's assuming in the organisation, does anybody know?

People spend wildly different amounts of time on their PhDs. It's entirely possible she's taking a partial or total break from it to play while she can.

Is Maddelisk supposed to turn down the offer money, training, travel and the ability do more of something she likes doing because she had the (mis)fortune of being pretty and a woman? Its kinda unreasonable to demand that. Anyways, I wish you lots of luck Maddelisk, I hope you can continue to improve under Quantic.
I never said she shouldn't accept the invite and I definetly did not "shit on her", what's wrong with you?
The problem isn't girls accepting the invites, the problem is teams offering the invites.

Lul Scarlett?

to be fair scarlett provided results before she got recruited by a good team; these girls have no results what so ever
|
good quantic, always knowing what to do, she plays very well, can get to gm europe soon if practices the amount required
|
Someone please look at the recent results of teamless Veralynn and tell me Maddelisk is a better player.
|
Yes, signing players with no results and very little potential simply because they have boobs and a nice face. Boobs + SC2 = return of ROI right? Stop trying to sell me sex. I'm not stupid. At least if you are, don't try to sugar coat it with your bullshit statements.
