Since its resurgence a few months ago, Root has been expanding faster than a Zerg’S creep post queen-buff. WE’ve picked up established players in the StarCraft community, like TT1 and Major, and fostered the growth of some New North American BLooD through the signing of Fitzy, PuCK, and MaSa. While WE Love acquiring New players, the constant Flow of talent Into Root’S roster is going to slow, but not before WE make ONE last addition to the family: Yoan “ToD” Merlo.

You may know ToD as, simply put, ONE of the greatest WarCraft III players of all time. If you doubt that statement, let me read off just a few of ToD’S accomplishments: 1st place World e-Sports Games, 1st place Blizzard Worldwide Invitational, Silver and bronze medals at World Cyber Games and recognition as WarCraft III’S player of the year in 2007. ToD even moved to China, a WarCraft III hub, in 2006 to hone his skills and compete in the world’S biggest tournaments.

Due to this continual success in WarCraft III, ToD turned to StarCraft II relatively slowly but has still managed to become ONE of Europe’S strongest Protoss. ToD has been living and training in Korea alongside the world’S top players since late-2011 and will be looking to post big results under Root’S banner in tournaments around the globe. expect to see ToD in North America soon as he recently qualified for a spot at IPL 5 where he will compete alongside fellow Root players Major and ViBE in the main tournament. Keep an eye out for him there as well as in team-league competition as he is sure to impress.

please follow ToD on twitter: @ROOToD

For more information on this news as well as an interview with ToD on this move, please visit www.root-gaming.com

ROOT is getting huge recently, probably could match Quantic in players if it continues at this rate. Good pick up for ROOT.

This like the best pick up they have made recently. Tod is very good, while he hasn't won anything, he can beat people.

I'm 99.9% positive with all these amazing pickups sponsors are hopefully wanting to sponsor ROOT soon. To add on to the Twitch and Rush order tees sponsor.

As of yet, two sponsors is not even close to what is required. And I highly doubt Rush Order t's really gives that much. I hope for the players sake more sponsors come with time.

This is a pleasant surprise. I did not think root would be able to make such a pick-up. Makes me wonder what else root is capable of doing, especially with crank hanging around the free market.

I think the chances of crank joining root are slim, unless root has access to sponsorship funds to send him places that I'm not aware of.

I'm probably going to get all kind of flack for this but doesn't it seem like ToD is given more respect than he deserves in SC2 because of his War3 glory? I remember him 2-0ing Alicia once about a year ago in bracket play the first time the Koreans started going to MLGs. Has he had any major or minor victories since then? I can't seem to think of any.

(Z)CatZ and (T)Drewbie are the masterminds, and are using Catz connections and knowledge of the local area to get started.

(P)Fayth and (P)KiWiKaKi are the main investors, but Kiwikaki will also be using his Vegas connections to set up distribution to the biggest hotels on the Las Vegas strip.

(P)RotterdaM and (P)ToD are going to use their knowledge and connections in the European rave scene to help start distribution there, but as part of Catz' master plan they will also use the current European economic crisis in order to run for office in their respective countries and eventually bring in of the legalisation of medicinal coca throughout Europe, of which Root will be the only officially sanctioned supplier.

(Z)Fitzyhere, (P)PuCK, and (T)MaSa are there to try and influence American college and high-school kids to start using cocaine they will then oversee the distribution of that segment.

(T)Major was an extremely important pickup. Without him there is no way that Root would be able to get their coca through Mexico's dangerous borderlands into the US, he will use his extensive network to ensure safe transit of the cargo.

There is only one piece of the Puzzle missing. That is, you guessed it, (Z)CoCa. With him they can avoid arousing the suspicion of the law from continually talking about Coca, because they will think that they're just discussing the salary of their ace zerg.

So much for quietly getting a top NA roster, its loud and clear, sick zergs protoss and terran on that roster. It makes a lot more sense if you consider the fact that major and tod stayed at the gom house at the same time! GL

A while ago catz said Root isn't built on hype. They've had a lot of pickups lately, and a I daresay the latest pickups in ToD/Major are better than the rest of the Root roster. But I'm still waiting to see any results from root, and not just the hype generated by picking up all these players.

I do wish the best of luck to ToD, I've enjoyed watching him play and hope he benefits from joining root.

Fits the ROOT stereotype of controversial, so not all that surprising. That being said, even after the stuff ToD did back in WarCraft 3 he was always one of my favorite players to watch. I always support Human players, so best of luck for ToD.

Faster than a Zerg's creep post-queen buff indeed.
Must've been one meaty sponsor and many good contracts for you to get all of this so quickly.

Well I think 2 things.

1. They have a big sponsor incoming.

2. They aren't paying them much if any at all.

I doubt twitch sponsorship gives them that much money so I think they may just be joining in the hopes that when all these popularish players get on a team a sponsor will want them.
When I think of something else, something will go here

How are root able to afford these players? I understand they have some sponsors but a player like tod can't be cheap I'm just curious what root offered to tod.

They're relocating to Catz' house in Lima with a 2nd "training" house in Le Paz coming soon. When the players aren't practicing they'll be growing, exporting and distributing Cocaine through the guise of a team of successful progamers.

I think a lot of the bigger players are probably almost entirely self sponsored [maybe only getting stipends for flights etc]. Catz, destiny etc should all make good money just on stream numbers, the lower level players are generally living with their parents [fitzy and puck etc] and so dont require much of a pay. A lot of them already remarked in interviews there fine with a pay decrease because they have financial stability, and the long term benefits will be worth it. Financial stability= stream, merchandise, perhaps online poker, etc.

I'm a little worried if Root is a serious enough team for ToD, as he is just such amazing talent.
If Root play there cards right, they might see huge succes in this new roster, just hope they don't flop like they've done before.

What do you mean "do" something? There hasn't really been many major events that have gone on since their reformation. The major events that have been taking places have been the WCS, in which ROOT has done quite well. They have 5 members who have qualified for the NA finals. Two of their members won their respected wcs qualifier, Vibe and Major.

He won SEC 2011 (is like EM for EU players), and is the first player who won this title in two RTS Games (SC2 & WC3).
He won nothing in 2012 like Naniwa and all other Foreigners except Stephano.

Sorry but ToD isn't a nice pick up ... OK he is a Star and everybody knows him, but his performance are not good at all. For example HSC V where he didn't pass the group stage after a long time in Korea.

Then he had the opportunities to Qualifie to the MSI Pro cup through the MSI Pro Cup French Qualifier where he lost against KenZy and recently (this week) against AureS (who's know playin' only for fun ...).

But May be he'll have a Booost and become good with ROOT ? I don't know, wait & see

What is a nice pick up? A player that gets in sponsors!
What player gets in sponsors? A player that is well known, sparks interest and is somewhat special!

Now ask yourself: How many of those are available?

Then you'll agree: nice pick up!

Take Stephano out and it's about even between WC3 and BW. Include Koreans and BW absolutely crushes WC3.

Take Stephano out and it's about even between WC3 and BW. Include Koreans and BW absolutely crushes WC3.

If we only count foreigners then the wc3 players are doing A LOT better.

Top Terrans:
ThorZaIN (WC3)
Kas (WC3)
Demuslim (WC3)
Illussion (No former career, played Special Force competetivley)
Major (BW)
(Happy, Lucifron are also from wc3, but the dont really have that impressive results so didnt include them)

Top Zergs:
Stephano (WC3)
Nerchio (BW)
Ret (BW)
Sen (BW)
Sheth (BW)

Top Protoss:
Naniwa (WC3)
SaSe (WC3)
NightEnd (WC3)
Grubby (WC3)
Mana (BW)

As far as I'm aware there aren't really that many former korean wc3 pros besides Moon, Lyn, Ven, Violet and Polt.

He won SEC 2011 (is like EM for EU players), and is the first player who won this title in two RTS Games (SC2 & WC3).
He won nothing in 2012 like Naniwa and all other Foreigners except Stephano.

Nothing in 2012...? Thorzain won DreamHack Open: Stockholm, Nerchio won HomeStory Cup V, MaNa won DreamHack Open: Summer. DIMAGA got 2nd at IEM Season VI: Kiev.

In comparsion, Tod hasn't even passed the group stages in most tournaments he's participated in the past 9-12 months.

I'm not sure what your list is supposed to prove. Put the best five BW players against the best five WC3 players (minus Stephano) and it'll be pretty even. Include Koreans and it won't be even at all.

Moreover, a lot of people would disagree with yout top lists. Demuslim, Illusion, Nightend, Grubby?

I mean just look here

Winners, runnerups. I certainly don't see WC3 guys doing much better. But I repeat, include the Koreans (and all WC3 guys) and you have total and utter domination for BW.

Their line up for team league is awesome like id think the strongest on the team are TT1, Major, Masa, ToD, Vibe and Slush so id expect to see them a lot. The rest could be good for specifically taking down players like id say CatZ would be a great way to take down a really strong player who wouldn't be used to really creative play and Puck is really solid so he could be a guy to go out first in an all kill format. Rotterdam is kinda unknown so I can't really say about him and Destiny just doesn't practice enough so is really unknown if he can compete at the top level.

Absolutely true, but Wc3 was not nearly as big in KR as it was in EU and also the SC community is way bigger than Wc3 ever was (even though China is huge and took the dominant role in Wc3 at the end and is now the only really active scene there is in Wc3.)

Yes Wc3(especially EU guys) do pretty well, but KR is BW hometurf so no surprise at all that they got the most skilled players with the highest player count that comes naturally with the BW history there.

There were more foreign WC3 guys than BW guys, but I don't think that's all that interesting. My point was simply that in the foreign scene WC3 top guys aren't better than BW guys. The very best foreign BW guys vs the very best foreign WC3 guys, and it's pretty much even.

Many pickups..now let's see if these pickups have actual results... not "15th in MLG" and so on..that's not a result..that's a plain consolation of a "consolation number" and nobody remembers it.

I think he was agreeing with your point and was simply trying to portray what those who disagree with you might think in his opinion.

To what you said: I don't think anybody disagrees that the best players succeed regardless of their background. The issue is really basically the same as when people have their favourite players and teams that they support. Those who played WC3 tend to support former WC3 players and those who played BW tend to support former BW players. It is perfectly natural, I think. As to why people care? Because, as you well know, there was always a rivalry between BW and WC3. They finally get to settle it in some form with SC2 as the battleground. People end up arguing because they do not agree on the results.

Maybe he will accept blame for his losses without blaming external factors while in ROOT.

Probably not though. Neat pickup though, ToD has slick micro.

Holy shit Catz, it's so exciting to see Root keep growing like this. With all those toss players, led by TT1 and ToD, and all those zerg players, led by Vibe, and the terrans led by Major... Root might have what it takes to start tearing it up in some team leagues, you guys have shittons of potential

I don't think anyone on ROOT's lineup is on ToDs level. Training with his new teammates won't be that helpful for him.
Nonetheless great pickup. Good job, Catz!

They're relocating to Catz' house in Lima with a 2nd "training" house in Le Paz coming soon. When the players aren't practicing they'll be growing, exporting and distributing Cocaine through the guise of a team of successful progamers.

Major (BW)
(Happy, BeastyQT, Lucifron are also from wc3, but the dont really have that impressive results so didnt include them)

Top Zergs:
Stephano (WC3)
Nerchio (BW)
Ret (BW)
Sen (BW)
Sheth (BW)

Top Protoss:
Naniwa (WC3)
SaSe (WC3)
NightEnd (WC3)
Grubby (WC3)
Mana (BW)

As far as I'm aware there aren't really that many former korean wc3 pros besides Moon, Lyn, Ven, Violet and Polt.

Dude Lucifron and Happy have propably the most impressive results from the Terrans ^^

In wc3, but not in sc2.

Lucifron has had amazing results in sc2.

But definately not better than ThorZaIN, which means he's not the most impressive terran.

Happy to see ToD joining a new team, hopefully we can see him perform well for Root. On the other hand, as Bagi just said, I hope Root has a strong enough base to keep all of these players. I'm not too worried though. They have some very popular streamers in there, giving them a pretty solid fan base...the big sponsorships could be just around the corner. Let's hope so for them.

Twitch.tv and Rushordertee's are their current sponsors. I hope they can gain a few more so they can truly be comfortable. Apparently CatZ has a buddy helping out with the financial aspect of the team this time around. It's also worth noting that most of Root's roster have been on various major teams throughout the scene. I'm sure they knew what they were getting into, otherwise Root wouldn't nearly have the roster size it has now.

I don't know why CatZ doesn't bother to invest into a spellchecker, yet he hires a frenchman to play protoss for money.

Partly kidding. CatZ, get yourself someone who knows rhetorics and spelling to post your official staments, if you're going to spend a ton of money anyways.
