i thought they did it well! they showed scenes from a barcraft and wasn't too patronising. lot better than some of the other ones ive seen anyway

It's remarkable how barcraft has managed to start breaking down the barriers between SC2 and mainstream media.
|
That was a lot of Gangnam Style.
|
Never thought I'd see the day! Was a pretty decent news item I thought.
|
The headline is "Geeks get together to watch starcraft." Objective reporting- you're doing it wrong. Also, Gangnam Style is officially the theme song for SC2 now. I'm ok with that.
|
Haha, nice. I should really go along to one of the barcrafts in Auckland.
|
Disappointingly, the title is still "Geeks get together to watch Starcraft". Wish people would stop doing that.
|
That was the GSL finals by the way, not MLG.
|
oh my god, they got gangnam style best news story ever
|
Lol, my brother saw it and he told me. The guys they interviewed didn't look like geeks to me
|
Man the editor for this section realy like gangnam style.

i somewhat agree with this, even tho to a majority of us we dont really give a shit or anything, when ordinary people (by ordinary i mean, know nothing about Esports, or just casual gamers, etc.) see it they would take it wayy differently.
but i dont mind the news piece tho, i hardly watch news here in nz but they tend to be unbiased quite abit and this is great!

Yea. Nerd is kinda acceptable, the word nerd has nothing to do with gamers in particular, and I think everyone here know they are nerds. But geek means you are odd, according to urban dictionary someone who waste their time.
Nerd= ~OK
Geek= Rude IMO!

Pretty nice 1minute clip I guess, standard for the effort put into news segments these days. Very minimal research on the topic, makes anyone that follows it cringe.

Nah. Actually it makes it sound like this kind of thing has been going on a lot longer than it appears to have been. The idea of an underground cult of Starcraft existing for over a decade gives it some legitimacy. It also helps that the people they showed were, well... Good looking.
|
|
They titled it geeks, and then showed normal looking males, and even some females, and they were in a bar. Hardly going for the geek stereotype in the content of the story, if anything it says "we would call these people geeks, but really they are normal people, getting together in a bar".

This is great for eSports!

Gotta show it to my parents!

GOD DAMMNIT GANGNAM STYLE
|
Gangnam style woo. On a separate note, whilst I am one of the people hating on the negative title of the piece, the actual content, whilst not particularly informative, showed the whole thing in a pretty positive light, so kudos to that.
|
Phew, thank God this thread was made because i don't watch TV.
bro bro bro!
|
I don't like the word geeks in the title and I fear for someone who doesn't know too much about Starcraft it wasn't very indepth and there was too much Gangnam style.

No such thing as too much gangnam style.
|
hah, I actually considered going to this and then changed my mind.
|
Sweet as bro, full spec eh?
|
Soooo much Gangnam <3<3
epic news story is epic, love seeing this kind of exposure ^^

Alcohol, the cause of and solution to, all of life's problems.
It's weird how making it in to a more public, drinking spectacle means it's more acceptable.

Is gangnam style a SC2 anthem right now or what ? I hope it is, sick tune :D

The gangnam style had me laughing the whole time.

Jesus, whenever I hear Gangnam Style and see people dancing now I can't think of anything else than the guy at the WCS Nordic Finals pulling his pants down and taking off his arm prosthesis and use it as a dick. Fuck.
With that said, gotta go to a BarCraft or an event and rock it to Gangnam live.

Honestly both nerd and geek are pretty bad :/ Just because Nick and Dan have gone on trying to make 'nerd' something good, doesn't mean the public views nerd and geek differently. It's practically the same.

anyone know if there are barcrafts happening in wellington at any point?

But yeah both nerd and geek aren't exactly fantastic haha. I think, technically speaking, geek is supposed to be better but I'm not sure; geek just meaning someone who is into computers/tech usually and nerd meaning someone who cares too much about studies (to use the more derogatory defintions).

I think both immidiately bring up an image of a pimply, pasty, white single man who lives in his mom's basement and spends all his time in front of his computer for a lot of people. There's another definition for people involved in e-sports. Especially so after normal looking casters and interviewed members of the crowd identify themselves as 'nerds', but it's still a very derogatory term to use in a TV broadcast I would think. This clip was really good though other than that! Gangnam style! haha ^^

God damn I love those accents. I'm glad they interviewed a good looking guy at barcraft and not some uber nerdy lookin fella. Just better for stereotype breaking I think
