My first reaction when i saw the hair products or whatever it is for, it looks like some 80's scam product.. and when I then saw the commercial i couldn't help but LAUGH at that whole "artistic" fail. Then when the "i Hate you" came up, I almost cried laughing...
Are you SERIOUS GOM??
Haha i dunno about this, i prefered some random stuff like Hot6... what do you guys think? =P
I guess you never saw a k-pop video or a glimpse of korean drama.
Even if you didn`t like it... why the hell has GOM anything to do with it? They take the sponsors they can. Be glad that it helps them support the tournament.
My first thought was "who the hell is monsieur j" then I saw that they were hair products or whatever and I remembered the crazy hair BW players had sometimes.
I think it's good that they are getting a wide range of investors. It shows that they are indeed sustainable.
Do you people not understand how sponsors work? It's not there to entertain you, they are giving money to GomTV to promote their product, thus allowing Gom to do all the amazing improvements that they do every single season.

I believe they still Sponsor GSTL, but it's very likely Monsieur J simply offered more money before the contract with Hot6 was finalized.
It is indeed an extremely goofy commercial. That was some seriously cheesy artsy fail but who cares, anyone that sponsors the GSL is instantly awesome.

They aren't really focusing on selling to foreigners. I wonder how Koreans view these ads. To me they seem to blend it pretty well from what I see in their KPop videos, which tend to be pretty damn popular as well.
When I first heard Wolf mention it yesterday, I couldn't help but remember Puma's Interview when he won his first NASL Title. The interviewer asked him what he would do with the money and he very honestly answered that because of his skin problem, most of it would probably go into it. Many gamers and people that spend a lot of time in front of computers or video games in general won't necesseraly have the healthiest life style. It is very smart from such a company to sponsor an event such as GSL since most of the people watching it are men (core target of cosmetics for men ...) and many might have a need for such products (especially in South Korea where appearance is something that matters a lot in daily life).
And as far as the whole "artistic" aspect is concerned, it's a very common thing for french luxury product to do things this way. It's in perfect opposition with common US adds where a voice basically speaks 20 words a second to try to give all sorts of useless details.

Yeah I have no doubt the commercial doesn't strike koreans as lol worthy. Their culture is quite different from ours after all.
i think it is GREAT. It reminds me of the OSL that got sponsored by Gillette. It basicly indicates that the gsl is attracting demographic suitable for mainstream advertising.

wow guys, dont get me wrong... i love the fact that GSL/GOM is sponsored, i was just pointing out the fact that it seemed hilarious!
You don't have to try and turn it around like i'm saying its bad for e-sports or something... dont be dumb
but the fact like Mo0Rauder said, that slogan just seems kinda bad :D made me laugh... and also with the picture of this cheesy guy..
I myself also prefer something more starcraft related like g.skill or hot6 (why is that related you ask, cos its an energy drink, helloooo?) but thats besides the point..
I wanna end this by saying thank you Monsieur J for sponsoring the great company that GOMTV is, sponsoring E-sports as well, absolutely fantastic, THANK YOU!!!
Yeah I laughed when "I hate you" popped up in the screen, that was weird lol. But a sponsor is a sponsor, I don't really care who sponsors GSL as long as they keep getting them.
My main concern is the list of hot6 jokes tasteless was in the process of coming up with for season 2. I'm sure he could have stepped up his game and make it even more obvious.

This kind of provocative slogan is pretty common in french cosmetic ads like channel, hugo boss, etc. Don't ask me why. And the fact that this brand is called "Monsieur J" says a lot.
On June 12 2012 22:29 Agathon wrote: I don't even know Monsieur J...
I'd bet most people outside Korea never heard of him. I doubt the sponsorship is targeted towards people outside Korea, I don't even think that you can buy Monsieur J products outside of Korea.
Am I the only one thinking that "I hate YOU" refers to what the man thinks of the woman?
Anyway, pretty straightforward commercial here, indeed very similar to any perfume one we have in France, which are more about showcasing a "mood" in some poetic way than really making any sense at all.
All i know is that it was a fragrence commercial. Those things are weird. I don't think it is worth going crazy over although i think people will still take it for verbatum.

Nothing to make any fuss about imho.
Charlize Theron naked for Dior is a pretty cool ad in my opinion, who care's about what she says?

Mind-blowingly amazing map intros, new content (GNN Monday), additional graphics and statistics, improvements to viewers at GSL studio. There may be minor things I'm overlooking, but GSL is consistently investing in adding and improving things every season.

Yeah, while I kinda agree with you, (and I am also Korean) stuff like this is pretty much an armed time bomb. Keep the controversial opinions on the blog, that seems the way the site rolls.
looks like a western commercial any kind of perfume that we get over here. A bit longer sure but otherwise just as artsy fartsy. I dont see the problem here.

Ah, it's that can that looks like energy drink, nice to know
The best adds are useally the provoking ones, the ones that are really annoying is also good, because if you just heard a very stupid commercial, you might talk about it with you friends/family, therefor making more people aware.
I keep wondering if Gom could get some Western sponsors for our channel. I don't think Hot6, or Monsieur J are available anywhere near me, so even if I was interested, I'd be out of luck. Although, I also think that particular Monsieur commercial is a bit of a miss in the first place in terms of target audience.
You basically have a large audience of online gamers interested in eSports. I imagine those spots could be more fruitfully filled by gamer related products. Games, Peripherals, components, computers, monitors, or at least other tech stuff, be it phones, music players, tvs, etc.
(Obviously long-term eSports has to be capable of selling other products, but I think we're closer as a community to energy drinks and RAM. Not a whole lot of us up at 2-5AM thinking 'yeah, I hate you... my reflection? I'll buy some Korean cologne if I'm ever in a country it is sold in?')
Who cares what the sponsors are? If they're giving money to promote eSports organizations and it helps grow the scene I can't really think of too many sponsors that would be bad for the scene. It's especially cool to see some of these less eSports related sponsors starting to pop up (i.e. not computer peripherals and energy drinks). Those are all good and fine but if we really want this to be as big as it can we have to get companies outside of that interested in supporting it. I mean how many car companies sponsor football events? The more expansive the types of sponsors the better imho.
I'm honestly confused by a Male (??) Cosmetics company advertising and supporting eSports. This isn't exactly their demographic... while the majority of eSports fans are male I don't think they'll be swayed into cosmetics..

Hot6 is an energy drink, much like Red Bull, Monster, etc. However, there was a Korean report saying that it is super unhealthy and terrible for you. Its supposed to be even worse than Red Bull because of how much caffeine and other shit is in it.

They achieved what they wanted to achieve: People remember their spot(and product) and talk about it. That's successful advertising, doesn't matter if the video is hilarious or 'bad'.^^
Honestly, watch a french commercial perfume and then watch this... no big difference, just another commercial where you see a woman, a man, and a story who means nothing.
Erm, you seem to flip everything in this case on it's head. Sponsors can quit supporting a show or whatever if the show is weird or does something stupid, shows or whatever won't and shouldn't remove sponsors because they act weird/do something stupid.
I see the ''I hate you'' meaning ''I can't resist you even if I tried''. But yeah, Korean ads are something else, let's say, and it's a pretty normal one, compared to some.
Have you guys ever seen Western perfume/cologne commercials? They're pretty much the same as this. I know this isn't the same product but close enough.
I did chuckle at "I hate you" but I agree with the above poster

I gotta admit. When Wolf was talking about Monsieur J it was one of the funniest things i have seen on gsl. Not sure why, just sort of came out of nowhere.
i think there's a reason why that commercial is for korea, not surprising westerners would find it funny. but that commercial is just use(branding) of the actor jung woo sung and i think "i hate you" is open for interpretation. if anything this thread shows people will laugh at things through ignorance. you're not korean, you didnt get the commercial, thats all there is. move on.

Still kinda annoying to see the unwarranted "I hate you" message. :\ And it's not ignorance from the viewers, it's the stupidity from the sponsors who thought that advertisement was effective at all.
Honestly it's like any other fragrance commercial in any country where mood is the most important thing.... Words don't matter as much (and for the life of me none of the fragrance commercials I've ever seen in any country have made sense) Glad GSL is getting sponsors to outbid each other at least, since that's what had to have happened for Monsieur J to take the prime billing from Hot6ix.

So being confused by something and laughing about it is racist now?
I personally crack up everytime I see the commercial. An ad telling me it hates me is so meta it makes me want it more. Dont hate me!
Just wanna clear things up here, not a lot of Koreans who would care browses this site anyways due to language barrier. There's nothing racist about laughing about this one at all. Lighten up people.
i laughed too. i think it's because i didn't understand anything in the commercial up to that point, and the abrupt "i hate you" seemed hilariously ingenuous.
for the people expecting anything other than obtuse artistic pretension out of a cosmetics advertisement... uh, yeah...
It's just really effective ad Marketing. You can either have your commercial make sense, or have it be completely off base.
An example of this would be you creating a thread about it, because of how odd it was. Their marketing has worked.
Edit: It's like the GEICO commercials; they used to make commercials that were about ANYTHING but insurance. People would often mention that Geico commercials made no sense, but their marketing is working if youre remembering the product and talking about it.
I bet a lot of nerds in here need better skin like Korean players, including me. When I watch Korean team house videos, each player always has at least a few of those lotion bottles. Why not? They have pretty good skin.
So instead of talking about how nice or bad the commercial is, I decided to do a little research about where it comes from, and what this can mean for ESPORTS. Unfortunately I could not find much, and perhaps a search in Korean is better siuted, but I did find something.
So first of all, Mr. J is actually Mr. Jung Woo Sung, who apparently is an actor. How big he is, and how famous in Korea is beyond my reach. But having a pretty boy advertising in Sc2 might be a good boost. You can read more in the product site.
They also say they have a network distribution in Asia and Europe, so I'm sorry to the NA fans, but you might be left out.
So I hope I can steer the discussion to a slightly more serious area. Think about how good/bad this can be for the sport.
My personal opinion is positive. Sure, we could have been sponsored by Cool Light Saber And Exploding Stuff Ltd. and all the gamers would explode with joy, but this might be a perfect sponsor for growth, and we still want this to become a legitimate sport in the public eye, dont we?
This seems like a perfectly normal fragrance ad to my western eyes. The name is a bit strange (I Hate You), but sounds edgy and that sounds like something a marketer would like. Seems fine.
Total normal commercial style for this kind of product. Actually i find it better then most commercials in germany about things like this. Not every commercial wants to end up in this late night shows, where they show a stack of funny commercials.
Does this subject really needs its own thread? Seems like a blog to me where the poster needs to vent his amazement at the Korean commercial standards.
I totally agree with the OP. Obviously GOM made a huge strategic mistake when they rejected Samsung, Apple, Google and General Electric when all those major corporations came over and offered GOM hundreds of millions to place ads on its stream. Obviously any one of those would have been much better advertising partners and GOM totally screwed up by rejecting them so thoroughly and repeatedly...
If it was a tanning cream being cold "get brown bro" nobody would give a shit. Cultures are different, what seems wierd to us is normal in korea and vice versa. If monsieur j is helping esports by supporting gom to be able to do these competitions, I couldn't care less what product it is or what their slogan is. They help esports, I love them for that, simple as that.
It's a great sponsorship as Koreans love their skin care. Also, you guys don't really watch the korean streams where there are legit advers (movie trailers and the like). If you don't understand why a tournament gets a sponsor then don't complain. It's still a sponsor..I'm sure they paid the same if not more than others (as SC2 seems to be gaining traction)
I hope they become as successful as hot6 did in korea and sponsors start lining up at GOM's doorstep. Commercial is nice, standard for that product and I think people should tweet/email their support and thanks.

I dont understand the creator of this threads point. The fact that you made a thread about their commercial, means that they did a wonderful job making their advertisement, advertisements are meant to put seeds into peoples minds so that they will think about the product in the future, they got you to think about their product
upon research "i hate you" means, wanting something very badly yet cannot have it. it refers to screaming women/fangirl in love with jung woo sung (actor/owner) but can never have him.
They could have the shittest commercials I've ever seen and it wouldn't matter. If a company is awesome enough to sponsor the GSL then I'm okay with them.
Although their product doesn't seems like a good match for GSL demographic, they seems legit. Jung Woo Sung (the guy in the commercial) is pretty famous and a good actor, I don't think he would star in a scam product CF

In marketing, and specifically sponsorship literature, it is important that the sponsor and the event are perceived as congruent. By congruent, it means that consumers perceive them as fit or there's a synergy. By being perceive as congruent, the effect of the sponsorship will be more positive.
As for Mo J and GSL, there may be a moderate incongruity effect whereby they do not fit extremely well. However, it is empirically supported that when there is a moderate incongruity in sponsorship, it may create even more positive attitude towards the sponsorship and the event.
From GomTV point of view, I think it helps to move it to a more mainstream direction. But I do not know if it's a good move for Mo J. Anyway, as a esport fan, it is great for the industry.

but isn't the point of those advertisements the person in it? ie. jung woo sung in this one. so someone who doesn't know him, wouldn't give a damn. i thought it was interesting to find out this is his own brand(i think?) and "beat" was one of my favorite movie as a young teen.
Glad to see a company like Monsieur J sponsoring the GSL. Could bring in a different audience since its a perfume manufacturer. Regardless its a plus for esports. I wonder how they are popular in Korea, does anyone know?

On June 12 2012 21:34 TBO wrote: I would say an advertisement works great if it induces people to make forum threads about it.
Companies LOVE the haters. I think it was Totalbiscuit who said youtubers are the same way. They love the haters because they spread the name. People who love the product and people who don't care don't spread the message as well as the haters. They hate the product so they tell everyone and people begin to get curious and next thing you know, the product is popular and everyone knows about it. Advertisin' works when people talk about it, positively or negatively. They still gain customers no matter how cheesy you think it is because you get others interested.
I think it's amazing that sc2 esports gets sponsors who are so far away from direct relation - I think someone here called it teritiary sponsors as in they don't sell stuff directly used like headsets, and don't sell stuff you kinda want even though it's directly related like energy drinks.
you know, because gamers don't shower and smell bad.

I think that making fun of someone who injects money into the scene and keeps esports alive is all around distasteful. There's still some taste to it though else this would be tasteless, and Tasteless is the epitome of epic.

Haven't heard about this product until I saw this thread. I guess their advertising is working great if people even advertise it further by starting threads about it. Money well spent.
I really think it is a good audience to aim for. The korean SC2 scene is growing with the kespa leagues and players joining SC2. Young males are the prime demograph for gaming in general and that seems to be Monsieur J's focused demographic aswell.
I don't mind the sponsor being a non-gaming related company at all, but I must say, the commercial seems incredibly stupid. I guess if they think it's working then that's cool though...
I was one of the lucky nerds who was given the free Monsieur J on stream yesterday (the Thorzain group). It's pretty awesome, but a bit weird, since the moisturiser is really thick, and the bottle is glass, so there is no way to actually get it out...

Problem is that if you watched any Asian commercial at all (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, whatever), this doesn't even crack the worst 1000. In fact, it is probably slightly above average considering the field.

but isnt there another spot of monsieur J, that was airing on GSL, wich was simply showing the guy and the bottle and everything was blurred as usual in this kind of commercials. then the "i hate you" popped up. creating an even more surreal moment then the spot mentioned in the thread, wich is kind of story based.
I really like it. It's extremely artistic. First off, with the snail. It represents a lot about life and social constructs. He's moving slow while being watched by a strange man. This is symbolic - It's like you going through life, going to college, going to prom ect and you have the whole world watching (the man). Pay attention to the fact that the snail doesn't react to the man. Similar to us, we just want to be left in piece and move forward.
The "i hate you" has to deal with relationships. Monsieur J is a fragrance for men, and rather recently a movement has been started around "conforming to womanhood" (That's what they call it in San Fran, probably different in other places). Women are upset by men doing typical "female only" stuff such as buying expensive clothing (Just watch the ad. Triple AAA+ quality clothing) and using fragrances such as Monsieur J. I know a few places that were robbed blind because they were "giving womanly attributes to men" such as perfume places that sold men perfume. This is what "i hate you" represents, the society in which we live in. We cannot do anything without getting hatred from someone. If you eat a piece of meat, you will offend a lot of vegetarians. Anything and everything you can do is hateful to someone in some way. But, similarly to the snail, you must move forward and ignore the outside.
You know the funniest part is what this line of products actually is. If you look closely at the bottles during the GSL close-ups, this is not just a set of hair products. This is actually a whitening set for Koreans to make them look more caucasian. Pale skin is actually revered in most of Asia and this kind of product line is not unusual over there. Still kinda crazy to have as a Starcraft sponsor but whatever pays the bills I guess. I hate you...
Quick question to those who can read korean. Do they only sell lotion and hair products or can I get a perfume/cologne from this company? (Im a bearded viking so fu skincare ) I really want to support any sponsor of my favourite entertainment

How cool would it be to have a bottle of Monsieur J between your other cologne's.. And your GF is like 'whats this?'..... 'I hate you'.

Did it capture your attention? That's what commercials are for.

So I think I get the commercial that ends with the hate:
So you see this guy and he is acting all emo. Then you see this girl that is dancing in flowing dress. They obviously just had a fight and the girl feels that she has hand.
She decides to punish him for the fight by throwing his favorite facial cream into the lake. He sticks his face into the lake trying to see if he can see where it lands to maybe retrieve it later. Then it says i Hate you as his inner monologue. It is clever because he puts his face into the water, which is like putting on the facial cream, to show that this will be his last time feeling that watery feeling on his face.
