I am actually glad about this in some way. Big tournaments have had the same players all the time... it's getting a little boring.

MLG winter championships gave ~$1000 to the 16th placed player and the spring arena paid the top 8 players. Probably one of the reasons why they do not have many non locals (i.e. Europeans) attending. Hard to expect a return on the investment when a 3rd place finish would only pay for the flights + a little extra.

Oh, on the dreamhack site it says that the prizepool is 1.2 million swedish kroner, which is the equivalent of about $160.000 - It was mentioned in the same sentence as Starcraft II, but it's probably for all of their tournaments then. "This year's official tournament game is StarCraft II and boasts a total prize fund of 1,200,000 SEK. It's not outrageous that I would make the assumption based on that I think http://open.dreamhack.se/news/2012/05/30/dream-team-logitech-to-sponsor-dreamhack-eizo-open-2012.html

I agree it kinda sucks they spread the prize pool only to 4 spots, they should make it top 8. But 3e place ($3,4k) would easily cover the trip and with not a field full with Korean's (like MLG), a lot of guys have a better chance to make some money at DH Summer then for example going to MLG Anaheim. Not to mention for locals (Europeans) it's much cheaper in general to fly to Sweden then to the VS.
