Attention: We have gone with the decision to remove our 1080p / 30 fps option in favor of 720p / 60 fps. Throughout our testing this week we have discovered that it will be too risky to go forward with 1080p for this event. On the bright side, with 720p / 60 fps, it means that every resolution under 720p will also be at 60 fps, whereas if we had 1080p / 30 fps, all other resolutions would only be available at 30 fps. We hope that you understand, but if not, we will offer refunds to those who have purchased HD subscriptions for this month. Send your TwitchTV username to iplsubscription (at) gmail (dot) com if you will require a refund.
Thank you for your understanding! We are all working very hard here in Las Vegas to bring you an amazing, unforgettable event. =)
This is our first time doing any sort of paid option for our streams, so this thread is here for you to ask questions, give feedback, and just discuss our new plan.
Starting on Thursday, April 5th, IGNProLeague is switching to a subscription model on TwitchTV. Here is the basic information for how the subscription works:
It is a $5 (USD) monthly subscription that automatically renews each month (like Netflix or a World of WarCraft account).
You can cancel at any time. You will still have HD qualities available until one month has elapsed from the time of purchase.
Major credit cards are accepted, as well as Paypal.
This pass gives you access to 720p and 1080p stream qualities for all of IPL's events.
VODs in 720p and 1080p will be available to subscribers. Non-subscribers will only have access to 480p and below.
You also get this neat little icon next to your name!
Here are all of the TwitchTV streams that ONE $5 HD subscription covers. These channels will still have free 480p and below for everyone:
IGNProLeague (Main Stage Stream for IPL4 / All IPL online SC2 events)
IGNProLeague2 (Secondary SC2 Stream during IPL4)
IGNProLeague3 (On Sunday, April 8th, the Championship Bracket of IPL4, the Korean commentators will be broadcast on this channel)
IPLLoL (Main Stage Stream for IPL4 League of Legends / All IPL online LoL events)
IPLLiveU (Roaming camera crew and hosts / interviews during all of IPL4 and other live events)
IPLFighters (All IPL online or live Fighting Game events)
Here are all of the events coming up that the HD Subscription will cover:
For the GSTL Finals on the evening of Saturday, April 7th, our IGNProLeague subscription WILL NOT grant you HD qualities. GSTL has its own subscription model that we must adhere to. You can find more information on how to subscribe to GSTL and GSL here: http://www.gomtv.net/ticket/index.gom
GSTL Finals will be shown for free on IGNProLeague's stream in 480p quality and below.
GSTL Finals VODs will not be available on any IGNProLeague channels in any quality. These will be for GSTL subscribers only as well.
For people who purchased 1-year or 2-year IGN Prime subscriptions on or just before IPL3 in September/October 2011, please e-mail iplsubscription (at) gmail (dot) com with your IGN Prime login name. We will e-mail you back with a 1-year HD subscription coupon code for our TwitchTV subcription package. The cutoff to request this coupon code will be April 21st.
You publish too much good content, I can't skip it :D So will the revenue for this go directly to bigger prize pools or to the casters/production or what? I appreciate that it costs a lot of money to run a quality tournament, but I can't help but want to drool over uber money.

This is helping directly pay for our new production equipment that makes it possible for us to stream at 1080p when we're at our home office in SF - tricasters, various other technical things that I don't know about or understand but look cool and impressive, etc.
I was curious if you guys have a schedule for the SC2 streams lined up at all that you will publish soon? I'm very curious how much of the open bracket will be covered, it is absolutely stacked. Always exciting to learn what match from pool play will open the tournament too . (Stephano vs MKP to open the tournament plz xD!)
I'm curious to know if the reason this wasn't just included in IGN Prime was purely because of the technical challenges of integrating with the Twitch service.
[Not trying to derail or flame, just posing some questions.]
Sounds good, but what is the rationale? Is IPL simply trying to get money from their viewers as well as their advertisers? Are the advertising dollars from not enough to cover overhead and potential salary? Or is this just the way things are trending, indicating that SC2 e-sports organizations and leaders feel that viewers have gotten entitled to free content and are looking to make a buck? What changed from last week to this week? Why pay now as opposed to when the infrastructure was established (years ago)? IPL hasn't had a difficult time (from the viewer's perspective) in proving HD content, so why are we paying now?
I just want to add I think this is a good move from an e-sport's business perspective. I would say the quality isn't there, but it is. IPL puts out great content and 5 dollars a month is a completely acceptable price-point for a wide array of audiences. I will be paying on Friday, these are just some questions I have rolling around. Any thoughts?

Pretty sure even with paid subscription, IGN is taking a loss with IPL. The money can be used to pay for more new content (remember when IPL didn't have Fight Club or Team Arena???) and new hardware for streaming 1080p.
Streaming at 1920x1080 and then transcoding to a lower resolution via twitch.tv with limited access to the higher resolutions will add a delay to the stream for those watching at lower resolutions, which seems to be around 10 seconds to 1 minute, which means i wont be following or posting in LR threads or be able to talk about the games "live live" with friends unless they also buy the pass. Waiting for a hatchery to fall and having it saved at 10hp on 1 persons stream while the other on voice chat is lagged 30 seconds behind is not all too fun, sorry.
All or nothing with twitch resolutions, if people i would want to watch the games live with will not be paying, guess i wont either, because of this alone.
People shouldn't be comparing this to the MLG Winter Arena, there you had to pay to watch it, here it is just high quality, same as MLG's big events, 480p free, and personally I wont pay for this, simply because i dont feel the quality is worth the 5$, while i also pay for GSL and MLG.

If you had any clue, you'd know that the LoL scene is far larger than SC2's.
It's not about whether the game is good or bad (personally, I just couldn't get into LoL but my brother loves it); it's about monetizing and brand recognition for the parties involved.
Nothing too shocking here. The league with some of the highest production value and by far the most tournaments and overall content is looking to expand even more. The only shocking thing is the price they're asking. That's literally the bare minimum what they can charge, pretty astounding. IPL4lyfe
Those wanting access to GSTL Finals VODs can simply pay $1 and download them on their iOS device (iPhone/iPad) using the GSL app. Note that buying an event only applies to the device where the purchase is done. So buy on iPad if you can so you get bigger view.
I have a question about IGN Prime. If I purchased a two year subscription around Febuary this year, am I eligible for the coupon? If not, will I be able to get a coupon for future events?
On April 03 2012 08:42 amiGo_O wrote: you are really supporting LoL? it is a shame for such a great company to support game bad as League of Legends
There's nothing wrong with supporting League of Legends....
It's not really a bad game at all and it's a game with a very high following, and a large competitive scene.
I find it quite hilarious when people take the piss out of LoL because it is 'too easy' as these are the same people who get mad at brood war fanatics when they say the same thing.
I love how IGN always puts all of their information out there very clearly, unlike mlg. With IPL we know that theres no bullshit to it. Like hidden costs or information thats withheld.
On April 03 2012 08:42 amiGo_O wrote: you are really supporting LoL? it is a shame for such a great company to support game bad as League of Legends
wtf is this? No, shame on you lol, you don't have to watch LoL if you don't like to. IPL has been supporting SC2 since its beginning. They're the best out there, $5/month is so so cheap if u ask me.

its been stated by IPL that they're only trying to break even this year, with the goal of drawing in more viewers/increasing branding. aka trying to expand esports instead of making a quick buck...unlike MLG.

So you're willing to spend more than they're asking to satisfy your completely arbitrary, completely unfounded idea of what a) the content is worth, b) what IPL would need to generate to make a profit and c) that a higher pricepoint is somehow an automatic correlation with higher profit.
Please for the love of god don't ever post again on this or any other issue that might require you to think about the subject at hand since you clearly are incapable of doing so.
This seems like a very reasonable model considering what the GSL and MLG are doing. One thing that I would add, and which I'm 99% sure you have thought of, is that you should spam your IGN Prime subscribers about the offer so they don't miss the April 21st deadline.

Despite the ad hominem at the end there, this is a valid point. IGN probably knows best how they want to approach a subscription model. They probably have done a lot of planning. Higher prices mean fewer buyers, and over the long term that can add up if you can keep people on a subscription model. They are weighing the trade-off, and its reasonable to give them the benefit of the doubt that they are maximizing long-run profits and sustainability (key word long-run).
I will subscribe, IGN does a great job producing all this content. I also support MLG (gold member plus $15 HD per season) and GSL (GSL yearly premium, GSTL yearly light). I believe all of these companies do a fine job in their on regard. With some help I think all of these companies stand a real shot at making this eSports dream a real future.
Considering the amount of quality content we get from IPL events, and the fact that IPL is wholly invested in the community, and that David Ting is such a badass who actually cares what we think, you've got my subscription. $5 is a fucking steal.
I'll compare it to ESL TV, since they have a similar model and I have been a subscriber there for years:
ESL TV Premium is 36€ ( 3 € / month = 4 USD /month ) if you take premium for 1 year and 5 € = 6,67 USD if you choose premium for 30 days.
So the 5$ for IPL sort of the same prize. I think that is appropriate. What I like more about the ESL model though is that it does not automatically extend itself. ESL tv premium just expires after the period you paid for is over. I would prefer that for IPL too.
ESL TV offers seperate HD passes for IEM events and HomeStory Cups, for people who don't want a long term subscription and just want to watch one event in HD. Will there be something like that for major IPL offline events?
I guess they could just purchase 1 month and immediately cancel to have the same effect...
Can you guarantuee that all IPL events will be included in the subscription? -> Let's say "IPL X super offline final event" would require a seperate HD pass, in addition to the subscription, possibly with a discount for subscribers -> Is something like that going to happen, or will everything be included?

Nothing like that will happen. You have my word on it. This pass will include all HD content.
This comes with the obvious exception of things like the GSTL, where it's another organization running an event, where we will not be offering streaming in HD from our side. Baller name for an event though!
Looks good and after watching the extra content during ipl3 I'm inclined to purchase the pass for ipl4. However, I have a very strong aversion and hatred for automatic recurring payments. I've been screwed over far too many times by subscriptions that I supposedly canceled.
I still want to know what's the situation with 60fps stream. Are you gonna offer it at all like last year ? and if so is it gonna be part of the HD pass or free ?
Great deal. I know exactly whats going to happen for me. I'm going to think to myself, eh, good deal, but I'm happy with 480p. Then saturday is going to roll around, as I get more drunk, the chances of me saying f*** it and buying a monthly pass go up by 10% with each beer. Guarenteed buy by the end of the night ><
Create quality production content, prove their worth, then ask for a subscription. Was this a calculated move or a big risk? I know you had to have lost some money trying this business model.
In any case, in my opinion you guys have proved your worth in a very professional manner and I continue to be impressed with your way of handling the SC2 scene. Thumbs up and you have a new subscriber
I was at Cosmo for my bachelor party, I will have to say, nice choice for a venue for IPL4!
Oh sick, Korean commentary on Sunday. Wow easy choice there really, no doubt watching the Korean stream all day. I hope Legend is obsing for them on Sunday too, but even without him it will still be the best. ^^

Well I was about to subscribe but without Buddy this event is never going to be as good as IPL3
Awesome deal, if I'm around this weekend I'll definitely think about buying the HD just to support this kind of payment model. Tournament play available to everyone, but with extra content and better quality for a small price. Love it <3

Most days 480p is the most I can get out of my connection, especially when watching several streams simultaneously. But I'm still thinking of buying it to support. (Or maybe it's because I'm a female and my genes tell me that I can't ignore a good deal even if I don't exactly need it... ;P)

i believe IPL should put that in OP, so no one is scared of subscribing, i believe IPL would get more subscription that way, it's better than not letting people know and have them angry when they notice it's been automatically renewed i'm not saying IPL does it on purpose, no trickery here, everything is explained fine
still, a one time subscription option(no automatic renew) would be nice, if people like it, they will buy again anyway, especially for this value, and if they're satisfied with the service

For $5, I can get a McD's meal that will only last for a few minutes and make me fat. or I can watch unique 1080p quality entertainment for a whole month. IPL gets my seal of approval.

Croatia dont have official holidays at this friday and monday? Perfect timing with ipl this weekend
Might very well be the first money I spend on an esport event. Decently cheap, starts at an acceptable swedish time even though it's still running way too late, placed in a weekend where both friday and monday are free from work. Lines up nicely.
Hmm weird, for some reason I cannot pay for it via PayPal at the moment. Hopefully just a temporary problem.
And well that price is amazing, something where I finally don't need to fight with myself. That said I hope that TwitchTV can finally manage to stream to Europe or more directly in my case to Germany without all those issues at 720p/1080p. I honestly doubt it but with 5€ I can't go that much wrong at least ;P
The reason this is 5$ is probably because Twitch.tv doesn't offer any other subscription deals at the moment. 5$ is the amount you pay to subscribe any channel on Twtich.tv which supports it, like Day[9]. So you guys eager to subscribe should also thank Twitch.tv for not making any special deals for IGN for this.
Humm, i'm sure the price tag is from IPL decision and not twitch. I would be ok with 480p, but since i endorse this kind of approach to a pay model, i will definetely buy the pass. 5$ for IPL4 in 1080 is amazingingly good price. I mean i know everyone is used to MLG overpriced HD, but this is what i would call fair for an weekend event. In my spectator view. I understand that stronger economy's can find 20$ cheap, but i saw way too many people from there complaining about the price, so i guess it is a two way there too.
IPL still broadcasts almost everyday which is a super nice add-on and suplement content for the monthly subscription. But i feel that most of the people will cancel after the big offline events which is kinda understandable.
$5 is very reasonable, and I will be purchasing, but it is pretty annoying that this is attached to a subscription model. I know it is just an extra minute or two to unsubscribe, but is it really necessary to have it set up this way?
no seriously, 5 $ for this is awesome. I think its fair price, I know that some people are saying how this worth more, and they would probably pay more. but look this way, with this price many people will pay, including myself, if it was more I think I would not have money. Its a lot in my country.
I like to support Starcraft, but I never have that much to buy GSL ticket.
Thank you very much for fair price and I know many people will enjoy good matches in upcoming weekend.

Well of course you have to get a return on your investment somehow -- hope it all works out! I look forward to you guys succeeding because you have been operating completely admirably this entire time, and I'm so glad you stuck with SC2 this long; when you guys were first starting out I was hoping IPL would continue far past its initial 5000$ tournament or whatever it was, I feel like it may have been even less but I may be wrong.

e-- at 5$ I can't see myself not buying this when the weekend comes for IPL vegas, as long as there's 5$ in my bank.
one thing missing from this deal a yearly pass subscription for $50 for those people like myself who dont like to pay monthly so i have more control otherwise a awesome deal and a great way to support esports

Definitely agree with you, 50 - 60$ per year would be totally worth it

480p will still be free, if you subscribe you'll get 720p and 1080. You can't watch GSTL in HD with the IGN subscription though, you need a GSTL pass from GOMtv for that

Hmm I'll wait and see how bad 480p is, I'd love to support u but I barely watch anything from IPL besides the major event. Good deal never the less, if the games are great and the schedule is really good for EU I'll buy.

This is a great deal from IPL. I'm very happy to see more organizations exploring new revenue possibilities in streaming. Of course, my purse strings are getting pretty tight with my GOM, MLG, and soon IPL subscriptions. I guess I just need to make more money to support ESPORTS with

If you have an iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch, download the GSL app and you can pay $1 for the finals (if they keep the same price as other matches) to get access to the VODs of that match on the device where you've ordered it.
"the GSTL Finals on the evening of Saturday, April 7th, our IGNProLeague subscription WILL NOT grant you HD qualities. GSTL has its own subscription model that we must adhere to. You can find more information on how to subscribe to GSTL and GSL here: http://www.gomtv.net/ticket/index.gom"
I still have major issues with my account, as in, after i login and go to a link or simply refresh the page, it logs me out. This has been an issue since last IPL, i opened up 2-3 tickets and no one helped me. Your support page is also very nasty. Not a cache problem, same thing happens if i try on other PCs
Sry...but your site doesn't let me throw money at it. And no, i am not registring 50 email accounts just to give you money. This is a problem that should have been solved by you, not by me, finding alternatives.
I know everyone needs to make money, but is this the best direction for IPL? I only recently started watching SC2 streams and IPL is one of my favourite, but 5$ a month is a little extreme considering whats being offered. I'm sure with proper advertising you could generate more viewers, and more revenue via adds.
Unfortunately I'll deal with lame quality if I continue to watch what I consider(ed) fantastic coverage for IPL.

Ad revenue won't cover a 100k prize pool, much less flights for 2 Korean teams to the USA. This price is extreme: Extremely cheap and a good deal.

You can watch all the games for free at 480, which isn't awful -- it's better than Gom's free stream, at least. $5 gets you everything in HD, extra content, and some other IPL events that fall under this month's subscription. I really don't see how you can complain about that.
I like the one time thing more than a monthly thing. Now I have you buy and cancel and buy and cancel all the time. Cause some times I dont want to watch or I dont have the time. At those times I only check te results and I don´t watch VODS. So I liked the one time deal offers better. Pay 5 bugs or even 10 bugs for one weekend.

IPL has the best consistent content out there, Team Arena, Tournament of champions, IPL Fight club + The lans. I think it's well worth it

Thanks for your concern, I sent you a PM to not pollute the thread anymore. I'll probably buy IPL4 anyway since it's on twitch and not ign.com.
That amount of content is a give-away for $5, would pay as $10 easily for this! Bought, can't wait 'till the weekend (LAN with friends and watching IPL4 together).
You had me at ST_Legend observing. So tired of the hopelessly outdated casting archon, that is now so outdated I can't believe people actually pay these guys to come and cast for them. IPL has had VERY good casting up to this event and with forementioned ST_Legend and then APOLLO to top it all off.. Oh god. Here, have 50$.
Wow, insanely good deal. I will definitely be purchasing. A month left of school, and then I start working again, and I can definitely spare $5.
MLG is going to be very, very pressured off of this I feel!
EDIT: I forgot to mention that IPL3 was one of the best events I've watched/witnessed. I can't imagine what it would have been like it I were to have gone in person. I go to MLG Columbus every year, and watching the IPL3 streams blew MLG away in comparison, in my opinion.

Where does it say they got ST_Legend observing? Cannot find it in the OP but it would be an awesome bonus.
I'm going to be subscribing to this to support IPL- I think the lower quality streams are generally totally watchable and HD isn't necessary, but I'd like to see reasonably priced advancements continuing to pop up. Keep up the good work.

Wow, this event is offering a 6 figure prize pool, a huge venue, and even offering you a free stream, yet you want to complain about $5.00 for a HD stream, as well as a months worth of content? Shake my head.
Not bad, I think I would have to watch more IPL though before I make a final decision. I guess even if I dont watch enough for it to be worth the $5, it is still supporting the SC community and hopefully going towards more events.
its been said allready but, MLG should learn from this. Its a good, fair price that allmost anyone can pay for 3 days of good SC2. I wont be paying simply beacuse its the wrong timezone for me and i´ll be sleeping most of the time but this is a good deal
I want to buy, but i want to make sure its easy and quick to cancel, I dont need the HD until next big live event and DONT want to pay $5 a month until then.

i believe IPL should put that in OP, so no one is scared of subscribing, i believe IPL would get more subscription that way, it's better than not letting people know and have them angry when they notice it's been automatically renewed i'm not saying IPL does it on purpose, no trickery here, everything is explained fine
still, a one time subscription option(no automatic renew) would be nice, if people like it, they will buy again anyway, especially for this value, and if they're satisfied with the service

By the way for those who know how to, I subscribed to this yesterday on twitch.tv by creating a new account, and then I checked the quad view stream page of IPL. There is a login button there but it's for an IGN account. How will the system know I'm subbed or not if I cannot (or can I?) log into the twitch account on the quad page?

just tried again and it still doesn't work. if nobody from germany can, for whatever reason, pay via paypal it would put a real dent in income for ign. like i already said i'm not willing to use one of my credit cards for this. hope they can fix this before the event starts though.

I just wanted to subscribe, but paypal does not work and gives me an error with an opportunity to pay with my mobile phone instead, which gives quite an odd feeling oO
edit: ok there is no way to pay via mobile, either. it was just a survey like support ticket sent that "i would like to pay via mobile phone"
would be great if anyone at twitch.tv or ign could look into this.#
Same here. I click "Subscribe with Paypal", then enter my credentials as usual and actually get logged in to Paypal (varified thru paypal.com), but then an error message ("unfortunately, cannot process your request right now") appears in the popup and the processing stops.

Mad props to IPL for dealing with what could have been a minor crisis effectively and efficiently. By offering a refund I bet they get fewer people actually asking for refunds than if they hadn't mentioned it. 720x60fps should be great.

I think IGN are going to be massive in the e-sports scene with this sort of subscription model. Hell, I'm actually very tempted to pay for IPL4 too because they've done a lot of things right unlike GOMTV or MLG, literally yelling to them "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY GODDAMN BRITISH POUNDS"
In the case of GOM, look at how overpriced their subscription model is. Around $80 - 100 a year just for ad supported HQ (the quality is quite negligable) streaming and VODs. That is stingey as hell.
And what about MLG? Their model is quite expensive too. I mean $20 for a PPV event? Winter Arena didn't get my vote.
In fact, I only have two complaints with IPL4:
TotalBiscuit won't be there. Not IGN's fault though. Blame the US immigration department.
Not enough games. I wish there was more variety for people who didn't like StarCraft II or League of Legends. I mean why not include Tribes: Ascend, Gears of War 3, Halo 4 (when it comes out), Bloodline Champions, Quake Live or Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition?

seems like the monthly renewal is the source of the problem, any plan in giving user the option to buy a one time ticket?
I am fine with 720p after all most of my anime are downloaded in 720p and it looks fairly good on my 1600x900 monitor so 720p is perfect for me.
yes, but still we're talking about streaming, twitch 720p isn't the same as your classic anime or movie 720p, bitrate is way different on my 720p laptop i can clearly see a difference between youtube's 720 and 1080 as an example

720p for me is fine when i am watching on my monitor. I am sure tho alot of us watches it on projectors/televisions who like the benefit of 1080p
I always dreamed about what it was like to own a television. I been raised on computer monitors I don't even know what TV looks like (exaggeration)
So just for clarification, a one time payment of $5 for the event will give me 480p quality, whereas if I buy a monthly subscription to ipl I can get all of their streams at 720p.

incorrect, 480p is free. 5 dollars will give you 30 days of 720p/

No, a one time payment of $5 will get you HD for the ENTIRE month, since IPL shows more than just IPL 4, ie team league, showmatches, etc. If you only want HD for one month, then you have to cancel right after so it doesn't auto renew at the end of the month.

The "+" quality on Twitch is the direct video uploaded by the broadcaster, so the bitrate depends by IPL. The other qualities are re-encodes done by Twitch.

germany is one of the biggest audiences out here imo, this is a major cut into your revenue unfortunately.
Will gladly take the 720p with 60 fps, that was one of my favorite things about IPL3. Going to get my subscription tomorrow morning, looking forward to the event.
Are VODs gonna be up after each day, so we can catch up what wee missed until next day broadcast start ? We in Europe cant stay 3 night in a row until 4-5am, so option to see VODs next morning would be awesome
5 dollars, completely reasonable price. It's also good that your letting us know your thought processes with these changes. Good to see you take precautions so as to make sure the event runs smoothly too. Kudos to IPL! =)
On April 06 2012 11:40 Duravi wrote: Wait, we don't get GSTL finals included with this? That is kind of silly, couldn't you guys come to some agreement?
Yeah, they did. The GSTL finals will be shown in 480p on both the IPL4 Stream and the GOMTV stream for free.
I really felt the MLG offer for Winter Arena was badly overpriced and although they have improved on their offer I did not like the "I get it" attitude of their CEO. The idea to over charge then reduce is not going to win peoples hearts whilst IPL have been putting on free exceptional content for ages.
So for MLG it will be an event by event decision (I bought winter champs for eg). IPL however have always put the customer first in my opinion and for that they can have a monthly subscription alongside GSL (though GSL customer service is not great either..having to pay on top of an annual pass to dl via mobile app.. REALLY?) still GSL is the best of the best.
ty IPL you are doing great. and long may it continue

you've always been able to watch GSTL/GSL live for free, there's no issue here. If you want to watch HD then buy the pass like everyone else. besides, if you bought it now it wouldn't be a waste (unless you watched them live already) as the matches prior to this one are all pretty damn good.
Aww bit disappointed by the 720p limit, I watch on my tv and the recent 1080 broadcasts really spoiled me. Will still likely try it for a month though.

But just like HSC, I will be paying a subscription anyway. $5 for each tournament is less than half what I would value a pass at - and I wish to support them.

Well, that's a huge drawback given the fact that credit cards are nowhere near as common in Germany as in the US/UK. I, for one, don't have one and therefore won't be able to purchase HD access. However, since there won't be any 1080p after all, I probably wouldn't have gotten it anyway. Aside from that, if the event works out fine without any major lag issues for subscribers from Europe (I'm still looking in your direction, twitch ), I will definitely get an HD pass next time - provided that the Paypal-issues are solved by then.

Yeah, Paypal hasn't worked for me either, then I remembered having a virtual Mastercard so it was np. Only downside to that is that you have to pay 2-3 days in advance to get some money up so this possibliy would be too late for those who still can't pay

I do the same stuff lan with friends and i got my hd from a friend who lives outside germany. Maybe someone from teamliquid can help you. You just need to give him your acc information from jtv and he buys you the hd with this paypal.
If anyone wants to help me purchasing a HD pass for this weekend (I have paypal but no credit card so subscriptions don't work) please pm me. Would be much appreciated.
I'd send the money upfront via paypal and then ya just have to purchase the 5 dollar subscription

really good, im starting to really like IPL. They had some issues in there first seasons but now it's a really high quality tournament. Unfortunately i won't be able to watch it, but if I had the time i would definitely pay for the HD ticket
I think IGN should offer me a job with the amount of subscriptions I just processed for them
(IGN recruiters- I'm a highly qualified IT Project Manager, Sales Engineer, and Product Manager, with an obvious passion for eSports and I'm 100% able and willing to relocate...just in case you're reading)
Honestly, the HD video quality is very poor so far. But it's early, I'm hopeful it will improve. They at least mostly fixed the horribly off gamma/brightness settings pretty quickly.
How many streams there are? If there's multiple, where can I find the second stream and the original? I've paid for this, but the site is not loading correctly, currently watching through team liquid...
Uh, I bought this HD pass but it's for twitch.tv so how do I get HD on IPL TV? I can get in and start the stream, but I can't log in since that needs an IGN account, which obviously isn't connected to the twitch.tv account... so how do I sync them up?

I'm asking the same. I do get 720p+ stream quality but how can I watch other streams (if any?!?) than that one stream on Twitch.tv?
I'm getting a lot of lag with 720p. Lots of stuttering, stuff like that (ignoring the quality complaints mentioned above).
I have a 25mb/s connection (not being used at all atm), and a decent gaming computer. Nothing resource intensive is running on my comp atm, and I have the latest version of Flash, video drivers, etc.
I can't figure out why it's stuttering so much. It definitely seems like lag, but I don't see a lot of other people complaining about it.

Err.. it still looks like they are filming a projected image and streaming it instead of just streaming from a PC. So bright and bad gamma.

I too am getting outrageous amounts of stutter on the 720p stream. Really frustrating to pay for something and get something worse then the free stream. Sigh.. I'll switch back to 420 and try 720 a bit later I guess.
Not sure what it is, everything IPL ever does lags for me. Whether I'm in PA or in MD, no matter what computer or operating system I'm on, whether it's 240, 360, 480 or 720p, or if it's the tournaments or the fight clubs, I can just never watch IPL.
Bad luck for me I guess, or IPL is doing something wrong.

Stream is fine for me.. few lags every once in a while, but nothing too serious. I wonder when theyll bring up the ign.com-site again, think its the only viable source for quad-stream..
I can't access anything IPL related at all right now. I've tried from 2 different browsers on two different computers. The main site is screwed up and barley loads and the stream links don't work at all. Does anyone know what's going on or have the same issue?

Yes, I do have some stuttering too but not all the time. Atm I'm more disappointed about the video quality (brightness/contrast).
Further I expected to get 1080p and not only 720p. Actually 1080p was the reason why I paid for it. For me 1080p is still way better than 720p. And I don't see any difference of 720p 60 frames to 720p 30 frames.
The IPL website is not working too. I can only watch the one stream on twitch atm.
To be honest I'm getting more and more pis.... because I paid for it. Thats not what I expected to get, even if it does "only" cost 5$.
This is a big event with lot of money behind. I expect something better from IGN than this. I have seen other events with much less prize money and more viewers on the stream (50k+). Their streams were working way better (even on 1080p)!
I'm having a LOT of video stuttering at 720p (seems to be fine at 480p) and some occasional Lag spikes. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE FOR AN EVENT LIKE THIS. I hope this gets fixed by tomorrow Or they'll surely be getting an email requesting a refund from me.
MLG had no problems. Why does IPL player suck so much in comparison? Heck I'm not even sure how you pull different streams up. All I get is IPL TAC on the list.
The quality does not go up to 720p. The "best" setting is definitely the same resolution as the "480p" setting. I bought a subscription for 720p so I hope they get this fixed soon.
This is great and stuff, but for us non-subscribers you're running commercials like every minute or two. It's really obnoxious and will probably force more people to subscribe but for now I will just join the people not watching at all. It's not a pleasant experience and just sort of ruins the whole aspect of watching IPL unless I pay to watch.

Yeah it's been oddly laggy here too. I tried some random other HD streams on Twitch and they were all fine, so I'm unhappily running at 480 for now. It's a shame because the 1080 fom Twitch during mlg was pretty solid the whole weekend.
On April 07 2012 07:21 MidgetHumper wrote: Just purchased the HD pass to only find out that there is unbareable lag on the IPL stream.
I can run other streams fine at 1080+ but not the IPL at even 480.. WTF!?
Exactly the same here. It was funny in a bad way to switch from the unwatchable IPL 720 stream to some random SC2 streamer on Twitch with 30 viewers running a perfectly smooth HD feed that actually looked better.
But if it's working well for some people than hopefully that means the problem, wherever it is, will get sorted out soon.
I'm getting some crazy lag. I get the IPL screen coming up like every minute or 2 and then the stream popping up after it goes away. Sometimes I get commercials because of this. Pretty annoying and unwatchable. I don't have problems with other streams and haven't in the past.
A little disappointed with the stream quality. No 1080p and stuttering/lagging somewhat at 720+. It's like Battlenet 1.0 vs. Battlenet 2.0, last year streams were totally awesome. Hoping streams to be better after today.
On April 07 2012 08:02 Fission wrote: This amount of lag on the 720p stream is unacceptable IGN. I will not be paying for this again.
Man, it's your fault or twitch tv since almost everyone haven't lag
There can be problems that only affect a subset of viewers, you know.
Here are the problems that I've noticed on my end with the 720p stream:
-Video stuttering -Video stuttering sometimes with audio stuttering -Audio cutting out for long periods at a time -Low FPS at pretty much all times (much lower than 60 fps)
I have: -A 25mbit connection, not utilized by any other comp but my own, bandwidth verified to only be coming from the IPL stream using my router's status page, I've also verified its current speed using several speed tests -A Core i7 computer, 8gb RAM, no malware, no viruses, all updated drivers, all updated Flash, no other resource intensive programs running
I've tried restarting, enabling/disabling hardware acceleration in Flash, using three different browsers...all have the same problems.
I am convinced that the problems are not anything under my control. If the problem is between me and Twitch, then that's fine, but it's not anything that I can fix.
I can sense the emotion coming out of the players this tournament. Took this Snap shot on IPLs main stream, I enhanced it a bit and changed to black and white for dramatic effect and voila.
Puma had the game but threw it away after being caught unsieged by Polt. He looked disappointed, poor PuMa
Then this one was taken after Puma lost 1-2 against Polt in an extremely close best of 3.
Just minor editing for dramatic flare Cheer up PuMa, you're not out yet champ.

Oh thanks ^^ All credit to IGN though, awesome content so far.
Uhm.. call me stupid, but might someone briefly explain to me how or where i can use my twitch.tv-subscription on the IGN-Site? Im actually only able to watch the main stream on twitch in 720p because i dont know how to connect it on ign.com :<

same here...i can't watch wit two screens on ipl site in 720p.
Has anyone with IGN Prime accounts received an email with hd pass yet? I'm still waiting for mine, and I've seen some other guys (here as well) still waiting for theirs, kinda annoying to have to watch 480 or have to pay another 5$ for hd...
Missing a lot of good games.. I know there are limitations to how much you can actually broadcast, but man. The IPL2 had nothing on it for a long time, and there were tons of Open games available to broadcast.
So I bought a HD pass and still couldn't use the IPL TV viewer just because I got the subscription on my twitch account, not my IGN account? That's dumb in itself, but at least I can watch HD on twitch, but now how do I get access to the HD vods??
On April 07 2012 18:06 Endrew wrote: Where can I watch VODs?
twitch.tv/ignproleague - the whole stream is listed as a single VoD. Not easy to browse, but it's all there. twitch.tv/ignproleague2 for the open bracket stream (lots of downtime on that one).
please guys fix the sound issues for tomorrow, the games i watched where so bad especially the last few games of the open bracket with constant buzzing, echoing, sound not normalised and each caster having there own speaker. Casting one whole game with out video was also pretty poor.

I had done the above and it has completely fucked my ability to watch HD as I can`t log in to the subscriber screen when you switch to 720p+ even though I am logged into twitch with my account that originally bought the subscription. Just a quick word on the ads: I really don't mind ads, and I understand that they are important to support the sport and everything, and that a tournament costs a lot of money to organize.
However, you should NOT spam the same (long) ads over and over and over again - that doesn't work and pisses the consumers off. Seriously, I've seen that AMD so often yesterday, it was ridiculous! Get more sponsors, get some money from targeted ads, whatever - just don't repeat exactly the same ad again - I'm starting to dislike AMD because they're annoying me, which shouldn't be the intention of ads.
Also, the twich.tv overlay kinda obscures the food counts, can you try to incorporate the food count in the overlay?
Nice tournament so far, keep up the good work - hope the criticism will make the tourny better.
(I don't understand how the standard twitch.tv ads work anyway, I get stupid commercials for cleaning products and the like when watching some players' streams - WTF, I'm watching a starcraft stream! Targeted advertizing still has a long way to go I guess...)
The tournament was a good start however the 720 offering lagged/was choppy throughout the first half of day1 and I know others at least in Europe suffered the same.
Things did improve as Europeans went to bed but Twitch really has got a long way to go to improve its offering outside the US and indeed secure more advertisers over here too as we just get the same 2/3 adds over and over and umm over and over and umm yes you guessed it over again. Nothing IPL can do about this unfortunately but as we start paying the cash expectations are going to grow.
I have faith as more money rolls in Twitch will be able to improve as we do not have anyone else in this space who is much good either.. I guess it is like early days of television or cable?

hmm I don`t recall seeing don`t renew(I might be completely blind)... and if it was one of the buttons, why would the cancel be an option? I don`t see the benefit. This is what the email is sent to me said so in theory I should be okay till May 6th:
"Canceled Subscription This email is to confirm your recent subscription cancellation. Your subscription will remain active until May 06, 2012. To reactivate your subscription before it expires, or to view previous invoices, please see your Account Details. "
Also the wording of the original post can be confusing when it says cancelling should be fine. Anyways thanks for the reply and glad to see it is working out for you.
Edit - i know it sounds like one big whine post(sorry peoples) since it is just 5 bucks, but it is 5 bucks I am either not getting back(no refund?) or benefit from (no HD)

It's absurd that IPL4 can be worst than IPL3. A van did not crash and ruined the tournament. You guys did it all on your own this time.

It is kind of funny this happens when they made a deal with GSL. GSL guys must feel embaressed too.
I'm not sure why this only seems to be affecting a subset of users, but I'm still really disappointed that there's little effort to troubleshoot any of this by neither the IPL nor the Twitch staff during the event.
EDIT: Should probably also mention that the LoL stream has been absolutely perfect for the entire event, except for the low quality of the HD.
Major stuttering in both streams the whole past 2 days made the viewing experiance quite odd. IPL can be happy that they only charged 5$ for HD or the shit storm would be huge.
Also sound problems, sometimes stream way too quite or way too loud. Different sounds overlapping when not even on screen.
Overall this heavily reminds me of NASL Season 1 Finals which were quite as bad or even worse.
For such a huge tournament they MUST have a crew that can acually handle the technical stuff.
They should hire MLG staff for IPL5 or invest into another experianced staff. Nothing is worse than a now-and-then (but permernantly) stuttering stream for users who actually paid for the stream.

this.
also the amount of uncasted games is unacceptable for lol and for sc2. some users already talked about lag/sync issues and i'm among those with problems even with my 64mbit connection. lol casters had some problems with their mic volumes. either the ingame sounds were to high or the commentators voices too low. repetitive ads were really annoying. i don't have a problem with ads per se, but watching the same ad 30 times over 10 hours is just bad and makes me really angry at the company, which is kinda counter-productive XD
Really disappointed with IPL 4's production. Awful sound and stream quality issues... Lots of downtime, not showing Stephano's last game... This is a HUGE step back from IPL 3. Correct me if I'm wrong but there're NO vods, besides the retarded twitch.tv vods? Vods were a major reason why I paid the $5. ign.com/ipl doesn't even mention IPL4, seriously what the fuck? I'll definitely cancel my subscription and think twice for the next one.
On April 08 2012 04:53 Kettchup wrote: Only issue for me is that 720+ works great on stream 2, while it stutters heavily on stream 1.
I also have the 720p+, and my internet is absolutely fine (30mb cable broadband, can stream anything else in 1080p+ no problem), but the IPL stream does indeed stutter, A LOT. I had to switch down to 480p last night, which kind of defeats the object of paying $5 for HD.
It was watchable more or less on Friday, but I guess there must have been more viewers on Saturday which was why it got so bad. Since today is the championship bracket, I'm expecting it to be even worse.
On April 07 2012 03:36 Seiru wrote: I'm getting a lot of lag with 720p.
You are not alone. As per my post above, similar set up here and exact same issues.
I purchased the pass and like others it's a little underwhelming at the amount of unstreamed games, especially with the high profile players. I can deal with a lot of the other issues but, this was huge for me. I don't see a reason why IPL can't have 5-10 stations in the Open Bracket Area that just streams the POV of the players with maybe a webcam on the player. You don't need to hire extra casters or observers. It doesn't have to be in 720p, 480p would be alright. Just give the fans of the players a way to view their favorite players games that aren't important enough to be streamed on the main or secondary streams due to time constraints. We deal with it every single day, watching players personal streams and the vast majority of people understand you can't hire 20+ casters to cover all the games.
Plus it creates all this extra content over the weekend that people can link to on reddit, on TL, on Twitter. And it's only at the cost at some extra bandwidth and a couple of extra computers. I believe this one change at the next IPL will be a huge improvement.
just wanted to say that the ingame observer is really good. I point out all the important facts and informations. If the caster would not tell him to go to unintresting stuff because they missed that he pointed it out 3 min ago it would be perfect.

I would not call the mono sound problem on stream 2 and the 5 min sound problem on stream 1 "terrible product". Sure it was not perfect but overall, i think the production quality was good.
I have IGN Prime subscription and this OP said I could email and get it switched to HD for this event..I have emailed twice now in the last 3 days and no response..is that the correct e-mail??

Is the stream stuttering in a bad way for anyone else? This is pretty unwatchable for me. 1080p from MLG or NASL is completely fine, but 720p is altogether a different matter. It's weirder still since Twitch handles all three of them.
On April 07 2012 05:15 deo1 wrote: The quality does not go up to 720p. The "best" setting is definitely the same resolution as the "480p" setting. I bought a subscription for 720p so I hope they get this fixed soon.
I just discovered that on the actual twitch stream, 720p+ is indeed true 720p quality. For whatever reason, in the special stream viewer that ign has (linked in the sidebar) does not go up to the same quality. at any rate, the annoying "Twitch TV" logo in the top right corner of the stream is not there on the twitch website, so that's a plus as well.
Lani and the Korean streams have been the highlights of the tournament. Honestly, this is the worst casting I've ever seen at a major event. The quality of casters will have to be significantly improved for me to consider paying for a premium stream for these events. It seems as though every pairing has at least one person who doesn't play the game.
I say this as an MLG Gold Member who bought a Winter pass and a membership for HSC and has donated to Shoutcraft Invitationals (I spend money on quality streams.) The casting thus far has been abysmal. There's a significant difference between being basic (like TB) and being outright wrong (like HD/PU often are.)

Lani was definitely a highlight. She was very authentic, spontaneous and engaging. It was a pleasure to watch her stream in between the games. It was a gateway into the event as a stream viewer because the atmosphere from the main stage didn't always come across through the stream.
The hosting (between games) of the main stage was disappointing and cringeworthy at times. All the qualities Lani had were kind of missing in the main stage hosting for me. It often felt artificial, under-prepared and awkward. The one person who really saved the main stage hosting and especially saved some very awkward situations and badly prepared questions was Smix. She came across as authentic, professional and fun. Her work was a highlight for me as well this weekend.
To end on a very positive note: The observing by Legend was the best observing I have seen in a tournament so far. It is never perfect but it was damn close!
Overall, I had a great weekend with IPL4. I like the pricing system for HD with IGN Pro League. The freemium model is really customer friendly in my opinion and a really good deal.

Most definitly! 100% Agree perfect job there!
I absolutely agree. Whoever it was, was doing a good enough job that several people that I was watching with commented on how good they were.
Although I appreciate the free stream, the director of the cam shots did a horrid job at it. They kept putting up cam shots of the crowd when important things were happening in a game. And not only was it just a crowd shot, it was and overly extended glance that lasted what felt like an minutes while the casters were shouting with excitement over something occurring. WHY WHY???
"You will still have HD qualities available until one month has elapsed from the time of purchase."
So if the subscription is canceled and after one month lapses you lose access to the HD vods that were released while you were a subscriber?
Could someone please clarify as I am just used to the GSL model. Paying for something (like GSL Oct) and always having access to the HD vods thereafter for that event.
I know that the event is over already but since I enjoyed it quite a bit I wanted to throw you a couple of bucks now. Unfortunately I seem to be unable to pay for the subscription via PayPal. I already have an account at justin.tv but when I try setup the payment I get the following error message after logging in to PayPal (which also works just fine): "At this time, we are unable to process your request." Is there any way for me to solve this problem?
As a paid up subscriber just wanted to say the event was pretty good on day 3 (bar it just went on too long at the end) however improvements are required in the future for me to be satsified.
1) Lag. the 720 stream really was pretty laggy especially on day1/2. I checked my internet regualrly and it certainly wasnt my end and I noticed a lot of other Europeans complainimg too. I know this is really down to Twitch inftrastructure not being up to scratch for peak European times but as a paying member I need to point this out as the single most critical factor to me continuing to pay up. I had to watch alot of games on the free 480 (which also lagged a bit).
2) Not enough games were shown and sometimes the wrong games were aired..missing the last Foreigner match where he needed to win to qualify for champ sunday was very poor judgement and disappointed a great many people me included.
3) Casting. It was good but not great (bar Apollo). Considers working with the casters on a development plan for the in house ones to hone their skills. We all need to have structured training plans so we continue to improve and casting is no different. This will be even more important as you increase the number of streams / casters.
4) Too many Koreans. I love watching Koreans play but it really was a case of the mighty horde decendeth upon Las Vegas. Consider regional qualifers to alleviate this so more chance for a variety of countries to get their favourites into the final days. There is a reason the most popular streams are of players like Stephano, NAniwa, Idra and Huk.
5) Format. Bracket and pool play is not great. Why not just have one big tournament. Giving a small percentage of the players a big advantage over the others limits chances of success stories like Scarlett. I am ok with perhaps an extra 3 rounds for those not qualified to weed out the non GM's (similar to Tennis Grand Slams) but thats as far as it should go.
6) Production. Your sound guys also need to go on training courses as multiple problems occured throughout. I really liked the Korean observer, Smix was brilliant translator and those that hosted did a good job. The Kpop was ok I guess except same3 VOD's were constantly recycled. I understand costs prohibit other content being aired but what about all the Starcraft 2 music thats been made (by Husky Smix etc?). Some lateral thinking is needed by all LAN organisers to fill downtime better e.g. Why not get a caster to go over some replays of interesting games that were not streamed e.g. Scarlett Demuslim or other games from Open Bracket?
I will continue to be loyal to IPL as you have won me over with your excellent Fight Club, Team Arena etc. I did not like the near all Terran affair that was Chanpion of Champions. Again we need balance.
Good effort and look forward to imporvements for your regular content and IPL5. Thank you and good luck.

I agree with every one of your complaints/feedback besides #4. It was the result of the best players making it to the end, which just goes to show that the Western and Euro players are still a bit behind besides a handful.
I'm not too sure about the complaints of casting having any merit. They were for the most part very good, especially the way they conducted themselves during the DC's and technical issues- professional, calm, and friendly. Even in game, the casting was great. You can't expect gigantic in depth analysis at all time and in every situation, and it really should be up to the player to realize what's going on. Casters should add flavor to the experience, not command it's entire destiny.

What? They spoke about the game state during the downtime, while Nestea's booth was open. That was one of the biggest uproars during the entire time, and even people in the live audience yelled at them to stop.
There seems to be a stark contrast between the critics and supporters, and it largely comes down to those who know enough to know what they're saying is wrong, and those who believe them. Balancing between casuals and experienced players is a major issue, and one that MLG and other events have largely overcome. I've heard a lot more dissatisfaction with the $5 purchase for IPL than the $20 purchase for MLG, for this very reason.

I agreed their casting was good however it certainly was not great and their offering was not comparable to the best so in my opinion there is quite a lot of room for improvement in this space. Nothing wrong with that as I am hoping we all have this with our jobs.

That's to be expected I think. The people who spent $20 are probably more involved and invested into the scene than the people who only spent $5, and represent a smaller percentage of the community, so their aggregate complaints are less than IPL. But the initial PPV uproar from the general community was huge, and the cries from the Gold Members who felt they were cheated were especially loud.

You're very much correct about the booth thing. Sorry, I was more referencing the style and "game knowledge" casters have. Yeah, it's annoying when a caster is wrong consistently and often, but I'm very much OK with middling game knowledge if the person is easy on the ears. To be honest, the only truly "great" caster right now is Artosis, the guy's game knowledge, banter, comedy, and overall love of the game is way too infetious to not respect and love. I just think the clamor to get those "analytical" casters when for the most part they just report on the metagame builds without any real game knowledge is a misnomer and bad form on the part of the fans. I guess what I'm saying is, fans should be more informed, and not rename a good play by play caster analytical just because they're familiar with the game's landscape- that should be bare minimum with the job.
