One is a completely voluntary act of the community for the sake of entertainment and a big, good-natured, trash-talky event :D
The other is paying more money than expected for a product they wouldn't even have time to watch most of, with a wide range of game quality, casting quality etc.
Some of the biggest motivators for people are a sense of autonomy and a desire to contribute towards a goal. One satisfies these psychological desires, the other does not.

Lets do it Nani! Show this frenchie what korea tastes like :D

Now this is Pay Per View worthy. Things that happen rarely and you can't find anywhere else (events with controversy). Let's make this 1$ and make it a regular. Once a month we have 10.000$ show match with a PPV model where both players are decided by the community.
Like next we could have idra vs mc or something like.

not really, the fun here comes from the fact that the money is coming from their own pocket

But I would certainly root for Naniwa all the way though, I just can't stand Stephano's arrogant attitude, it's about time someone puts him in his place (like Polt did at Assembly! haha). He is a champion, his attitude is one of his greatest strenghts he dont give a damm who he is playing against and he expect to win. Thats how champions are made. I would argue that, in fact, the real (gsl) champions have been made by doing their research, studying their opponents and bringing their strengths to bear on those opponents' weaknesses. So, while his attitude serves him well it is not that of a champion, it is instead that of a prodigy who has not yet found a teacher. He is incredibly good at what he does but has not yet found a way to perfect his raw talent. edit: grammar
You can practise 24/7 have a million coaches to help prepare for you opponent but if you got a defeatist attitude as soon something goes wrong it doesnt matter.
Stephano attitude is what we see from all the great champions in different sports and I hope he never change.

Not saying there shouldnt be their own money in it.
But we can also collectively, of our own accord, raise money and offer it to the winner.

It doesn't matter since it's self sustained and the community gets drama. One rule though would be one player can't be invited the next 3 show matches (to avoid spam of the favorites).
So we could have:
Stephano vs Naniwa idra vs MC Huk vs DRG Ret vs MVP Stephano vs MC
etc...
And in a bo11 with Tastosis. For that kind of money for one match I can bet we will see the best of anyone. And the loser gets nothing.

you cant just have the community decide who plays. These players have schedules and stuff, and you see the stick some tournaments get for nothing have live/up to date replays to go off, this kind of thing would just be one more for players to work around

They can squeeze once a month one night to play a game for 10k don't you think? it's not charity after all. It's more than they can make in a tournament.

What an awful idea. This isn't boxing, this kind of thing completely de-legitimises the sport.
Not to mention you're throwing money at the same few people instead of spreading it around and making the industry sustainable.

Monobattles got 30k of viewers. Do you approve that? Awesome controversial matches are bad for the industry? Yeah right.

How exactly is TotalBiscuit giving stream money to charity in a 1k fun tournament the same as a PPV grudge map at the whim of community fan favourites?

How are Monobattles or friendly showmatches controversial?
There is a huge difference between a player driven grudge match where one has to pay the other and a community chosen cuddlematch.

It's not the same. One is about the actual game and the competitive aspect of it. You tell me why this "deligitimizes the sport" . You leave in a dream world with no stakes and the play just for the fun of it maybe.

Hey if you can convince MC and Idra to put up 5,000 dollars each to play each other I'll tune in. If you make this a community supported tournament than this is just silly. There are enough huge prize pool tournys around. This is so awesome simply because there is so much in the pool from the players, there is a lot on the line for these guys.

I don't care how much money its for, I just want to see these two play a nice long match. So interested to see how Naniwa handles Stephanos' deadly zvp. No other foreign protoss seems to have a hope, but I think most would agree that Nani is the best non-korean protoss right now so he's bound to have some answers.
