Quit pretending we can just hide behind the internet our whole lives. You don't understand the situation then, period. There is a CLEAR and EASILY understandable difference between calling some anonymous person on the internet a nigger versus going to the south side of chicago, walking up to someone and calling them a nigger. We aren't hiding behind anything, some people here just realize that there is a difference between hateful intent and nerd raging.

Women, homosexuals, religions, and the handicapped have been ridiculed and subjected for millennia. But now we bring up an extremely sensitive AMERICAN travesty and people like you have to start raising their voice in order to defend just how unbecoming your American ancestors were. Let's be honest, you clearly cannot comprehend that all gross injustices must be dealt with equal levels of criticism and vitality. What the hell does being American have to do with this? Trust me, plenty of us Americans fully recognize that any slurs (be it "nigger", "faggot", or anything else) are far from acceptable in today's society. Please don't group us all together just because some people think otherwise.

Come on (some) guys, it's a pretty cool and neat statement, stop bitching for the sake of bitching. You mean like this whole incident that got one of the best casters (from an entertainment perspective) fired and potentially removed from the scene forever? Yeah and not like this kind of shit doesn't happen every few weeks around here either.

Granted, hiring Orb in the first place may have been an unwise decision. But I wouldn't call that unprofessional. Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised if they were getting heat from sponsors in addition to the firestorm.

I doubt there's a single person on this planet who would have started watching SC2 tournaments but didn't because and only because s/he's heard a caster or player use a racial slur. If there's something that's holding SC2 back, that's not it. Personally I stopped watching Destiny and LagTV for their language use. It's not the only thing holding SC2 back, but it's one of the things.

Quit pretending we can just hide behind the internet our whole lives. The crux of those examples is that it involves people who are both strangers and members of the race targeted by the racial slur (when people use it as such). So the context is ambiguous. It doesn't mean we can't use these words in ways which are clearly not motivated by latent racism (even ironic, joking, and endearing contexts). It just means there are some situations where the words don't fit. And that's true of basically all words.

I'm not saying Americans are alone in their ineptitude in dealing with injustices, but being American clearly puts an emphasis on the detrimental effects of racism over all others. And let's not get so sensitive when dealing with generalizations such as this. Clearly not everyone thinks or feels the same way. I am merely alluding to American Zeitgeist.

Maybe it's a Canadian thing, but I feel like faggot is more of a swear word than a derogatory statement. I know several gay people who call people faggots all day. The overwhelming vast majority of people I've ever heard say the word faggot use it as a descriptive word for someone that pisses them off/they dont like/ etc. I'm honestly taken aback by how offended everyone appears to be over a word that lost it's true, hateful meaning to 95% of the worlds population decades ago. You know, because black people don't call each other niggas. On March 09 2012 15:38 iloveAthene wrote: "nigger" and "nigga" are different words with different meanings That's hardly a counterargument. It's nearly the identical word, with the "r" simply dropped at the end, and that was mostly due to simply how it sounded. It's of more importance how the word is used, just as how it's also somewhat important how "faggot" is used. The vast majority of the time it's not used as a homophobic term, as we've been desensitized to it, mostly due to the Internet and young 12 year old kids playing Halo. Just as "nigga" is not used to actually mean nigger, but something different. It's still the same word.

Orb was fired because he raged and called people, whose race he did not know, "nigger" on ladder last year. Orb did not do anything wrong while working for EG. If Orb calling people "nigger" on ladder was such a large issue, why was Orb hired in the first place? Not doing your homework is unprofessional. EG should have either: 1. Not hired Orb in the first place 2. Fired Orb the second he did something borderline rage/racist while working for them. The way things turned out I find EG to be entirely at fault. Their actions were unprofessional, and I do not like that. I do not like that I now have to find out how to support Machine, DeMuslim and Incontrol with out supporting EG as an organization. So, EG is supposed to vet the screenshots taken by third parties on their personal computers in order to determine whether or not Orb, or anyone else, used language that was offensive or contradicted company or cultural values? Or hire someone to monitor the streams of everyone with an internet connection and an SC2 account? As for your second point, if you discover that someone has used indefensible language in the past, lies about it to you, and then generally is the cause of people CONTACTING YOUR SPONSORS DIRECTLY, are you really going to sit around and wait to see if that person does it again?

SC2 needs corporate sponsors at least as much as viewers....companies care when their employees act like idiots, even if a large chunk of the viewership doesn't.
