I've decided to continue accepting custom background requests indefinitely for now, but may put it on hold at any time depending on how busy I am or my willingness to put more of my time towards it. If at any point I do put it on hold, only commissioned requests will be considered. Anything else will be put on an indefinite waiting list. This will purely be a thread for sharing and requesting, not discussing whether or not people are getting banned for doing it. Which they aren't. If you want to argue, do it in another MPQ modding thread.
If you have your own DDS files you want to share, post an in-game image displaying it as well as the link to the DDS file and I'll add it to the OP archive.
DDS files will be organised by the background they were originally designed for. They can of course be used for other backgrounds by changing the name, but they won't fit perfectly unless you re-dimension them. So just to keep it simple, that's how I'll be organising it. There's going to end up being a lot of images in the OP archive, so they'll all be displayed in thumbnails. Click the thumbnail to get the download. If the thumbnail isn't big enough to make out the image, you can find fullscreen versions of each image at http://telikostarcraft.com/backgrounds/

*** These two can be problematic. Not recommended to swap TO these two from other DDS images unless you're willing to spend some time in Photoshop. If that's not an issue, go to http://telikostarcraft.com/modifications/customise-background-images/ and scroll down to the section titled "Photoshop" to learn how to do these properly.
Basic rules for making a request. If these rules are broken, I will be the cause of the 2012 apocalypse. + Show Spoiler +
One request per post. If your request has been completed, you may only make another request if there is no one else waiting for theirs. If you request two at once, I'll ignore one.
All requests must be acceptable for public display (i.e. no porn/camwhores/gore) It has happened.
Do not spam me with emails/PMs asking why a request might be taking so long. I'll do them when I have the time. If you remind me, your request will be ignored.
Do not give me a description of an image you would like. Link the image you want done, the background you want it done for (main menu, T, Z, P etc) and make sure the image is decent resolution. Images smaller than roughly 1200x600 will probably turn out shit as I'll have to stretch them. Recommended minimum dimensions are 1500x800 or 1300x800 for Terran and 1400x800 for Zerg. I'm not going to hunt down a high resolution version of your image if you only post a thumbnail.
Do not ask me to PM you a link to the download when it's done. It'll be posted in the thread in bulk along with all the other requests. It takes you a lot less time to check if I've posted it yet then it takes me to make it. If you don't want to be checking every day, just wait a week and check back then, it rarely takes me longer than that to finish requests.
Take the effort to rehosting your desired image to a website like imgur or fileshack to minimize the chances that I won't have access to the image, making everyones life easier.
Do not show off your own work unless you're willing to share the download link. This obviously isn't really related to making a request, but if you don't share your work, all you're going to do is annoy people by showing off. It's not going to be appreciated if you keep it to yourself.
If you want to be kept up to date on new DDS releases or just modding for SC2/other various games, I'll be posting stuff on these things
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\StarCraft II\Battle.net and open Battle.net.MPQ using the MPQEditor (Backup the MPQ somewhere safe first incase you want to undo the changed you've made later.)
When browsing inside the MPQ via the editor, navigate to Battle.net\Shared and drop the download in there, replacing the previous file.
For loading screen images, you need to go to C:\Program Files (x86)\StarCraft II\Mods\Core.SC2Mod, open enGB.SC2Assets with the MPQEditor (could also be enUS, zhTW, koKR, ruRU etc based on region you play on) then navigate to Assets\Textures and drop the DDS there, remembering to backup the MPQ first incase you change your mind later.
Archive: Look through here before posting your request. There's been some pretty incredible requests in the past that turned out really nicely with the SC2 interface, you might find something you like.

Edit Edit: New backgrounds will rarely be added to this list from this point on as there's already a pretty large selection. I'll make exceptions if I get really awesome requests. I also be doing requests in bulk from now on and uploading them in packs instead on individually, it just helps make things easier for me. Because of this, I'll usually wait three or four days before I start completing requests.
As two additional releases, this one makes your quick match a lot cleaner to display more of your custom image. The image I used as an example was pretty bad because it wasn't that covered up to begin with, but you get the idea. Follow the instructions.txt in the download for getting this to work. If your game begins patching after installing this, you can fix it by reading this.

It should be mentioned that if you want to take say a terran background and use it for protoss you can just download the file and grab the name of the protoss file from the op and bam you have it for protoss now!

Tried my best with this one, but because of the vertical dimensions and bright foreground and background, made it really difficult to get this to fit in without the contrast standing out too heavily. Had to manually erase the background near the bunny ears and tshirt because they were too bright to select. Kinda disappointed with how the hair turned out too, but it's the best I can do without spending an hour on it.
You also gave me an excuse to experiment with a tablet I've had lying around for like two years that I got for college but never actually bothered using. The bunny ears were driving me insane trying to erase the background with a mouse, never realised how awesome tablets actually are.
Inverted the image so she wouldn't be hid behind the menus, rescaled her head slightly because her eye was cutting across the interface, ended up getting it to align with the Protoss selection. Mildly amusing.
I'll probably do some more stuff tomorrow. If not then, it'll probably be in 2-3 days.

There's loads of SNSD pictures in the archive. Find one you like and rename it to 28a0d83f17ab2011a755f61b8c838fec3cbd734e then install. Tell your friend he needs to provide the picture he wants. I don't know what pictures of DRG he likes.
Whenever I try to download the MMA picture, the IU one comes up instead. Can you explain why this might happen? the mediafire file is exactly the same for both links

Images like this usually really annoy me because I don't like keeping the bright background in the SC2 interface, but creating a transparent effect on something like the flames at the bottom can be a huge chore. However, I'm really happy with how it turned out, and this is probably one of my favourite releases so far. Some of the edges are still a bit rough, but I'm pretty satisfied with it.

Adding a pretty decent collection contributed by RoKetha which is a complete background redesign to a pony theme. Ponies not exactly my thing, so I'm not going to comment on it, but I'm sure some of you will be interested in it.
Also includes a TL logo decal by default for Zerg, but can obviously be adjusted. Installing decals not quite as simple as backgrounds, will probably require renaming or changing your current decal. To learn more about it, you can read up on it here. Client side change, file in the download above.

I have getting a clean right side, but my left side where the rank icon is still has overlay. I install the dds file in the patch.MPQ, but it just repatched my SC2 and stays the same. Has anyone else got it to work?
Just wanted to share this--some dds I made and posted on the "Wow, medic in SC2 main menu" thread. I noticed Teliko posted one for zergs with the new Hydralisk. My version is less saturated and positioned so the head isn't obscured by the FFA button. Enjoy!

When you placed the file into the patch.mpq, did you get a prompt confirming to replace a previous file? Or did the file just drop in without any questions asked?

Can honestly say that in over a year of mpq editing, I've never seen that message :/ SC2 MPQs go up to like 3gigs or something, and the one used for the backgrounds is only around 113mb, or at least for mine. How big is yours currently?

Outlines still kinda heavy, I had my background eraser tolerance set to 100%, but it just refused to apply to the outline. I refined a lot of it in a layer mask, but any more and the stuff flying around would have started to be removed, and manually removing the remaining outline takes effort -_- If you have another one similar to the style of the previous two, I can make you one for the main menu, if you want. These look pretty awesome.

Alright Teliko. I did some searching around and found 6 images that would look pretty baddass on the main menu. I narrowed it down to 2... I honestly cant decide which one i perfer so I'm going to let you decide for me. Pick the one you would like to do I'm fine with either.

This image has a large file size because it has such a hugely powerful gradient, when scaled up, the quality goes to shreds in DXT5 interpolated alpha format, so I had to save it in A8R8G8B8 instead to maintain a decent quality. DDS files tend to eat up quality a lot, no one really notices it unless it's got huge gradients like this though. So yeah, it's maintaining the same quality at the cost of 8 more mb. Shouldn't effect anything though, just explaining in case you're wondering about the bigger file.

God damn.. Had a look through some of his stuff, pretty impressive.
For this one, I tried to make the clouds stand out a lot more than the previous ones. I had to keep the outline on the right a lot thicker than the left to make up for it because the cloud joins up with the character, else there'd be an obvious transition in the pink from where I increased and decreased the tolerance, but I went over the edges lightly at the end so it wasn't too bold in contrast.
This picture generally is also a pretty good example of the clean UI mod coming into good use. I moved the character so she wasn't hidden behind any buttons like the FFA, without the clean UI, a lot of the pink on the right would be hidden behind the blue menus in the foreground. Anyway, again, awesome picture. Love this artist.

For this one, I tried to make the clouds stand out a lot more than the previous ones. I had to keep the outline on the right a lot thicker than the left to make up for it because the cloud joins up with the character, else there'd be an obvious transition in the pink from where I increased and decreased the tolerance, but I went over the edges lightly at the end so it wasn't too bold in contrast.
This picture generally is also a pretty good example of the clean UI mod coming into good use. I moved the character so she wasn't hidden behind any buttons like the FFA, without the clean UI, a lot of the pink on the right would be hidden behind the blue menus in the foreground. Anyway, again, awesome picture. Love this artist.

Ah, I see you what you mean. Second one definitely a lot more impressive, but the dark red matches the zerg request too much D: Shame. Anyway, I'm probably going to have to release these as a set at some point now that there's one of everything. These are by far too impressive to not let more people know about them. Would use them all myself, but I don't get a chance because I make new ones for other people so much and need to test them out before releasing -_- Once I get around to it, I'll probably add some more for the lobby or score screen or something, I'll have to take another look at some of his stuff.
If you can find a big enough one for the loading screen, that'd be awesome, but it'd probably need something going on in the background too.

Yeah it's possible, the league icons are split between the same mpq for these backgrounds and patch.mpq in the same folder. Oh right, I should probably take that down at some point. After I moved home with a few friends, I was intending to start coaching, but I didn't really think it through because there's usually three other people in the same room as me, so I don't really have anywhere private to coach seeing as my bedroom is like a freezer.

Also, I tried downloading some of the other loading screens, but most of them are links to a .rar file with several stuff in and it's password protected. Don't know if it's meant to be like that.

Face gets covered unless you're on the graph menu and I had to stretch it a bit because the wing ends at the edge suddenly, but not too bad of a turn out.

I gave it a go, but it had to be stretched way too much and looked pretty terrible. Loading screen DDS' have to be 2100 pixels wide. Stretching 700 to 2100 doesn't end well. Sorry.

Just as a quick note to any requesters from this point on, I won't be providing screenshots any more unless I actually like the image and how it turned out, you'll just need to trust my experience and try it out. The reason for this is because since publishing this thread, the bandwidth on my website has been exploding and my webhost isn't very happy about it. I went past my monthly limit in the first two weeks, so I need to start slowing things down because I can't really afford to increase the limit.

I use Imgur when I want to display example pictures for something in the middle of a guide, but in terms of displaying huge galleries like the one background images has gathered, WordPress is pretty awkward at displaying them in such big numbers in a decent layout. I can't display them how they're currently being shown without rehosting them onto my domain. If I try to display an image from a target URL instead of my computer, it reuploads the image anyway instead of just displaying it from the source.

Wait... Not sure what I was thinking when I said this. The text on the button isn't applied to the texture of the button. It's overlayed in the UI in the location of the button, but the yellow button itself is completely blank. You'd have to change the language of the entire client to do that, which I haven't found a reliable method for doing without making the game crash.
Wasn't one of mine, I've never seen that picture before. Plus I never used megaupload for hosting, but yeah I'll do it once I get the rest out of the way.

Man... This guys work... Can't get over him. Probably wouldn't have put as much effort into these as I did because of how long they take if he wasn't so awesome.
The method I usually use to remove backgrounds when there's light colours was completely destroyed by this image because of how she's surrounded by blue with no pure white to source discontiguous removal from without ruining the overall tolerance fading. This took a long goddamn time, and you better take it to the grave with you.

H'm... Was installing the clean UI on my new computer, turns out this client has the patch bug. Going to be spending the next few days trying to get around this, will take care of the rest of the requests in the next couple of days.

Sorry those who've been waiting, I'm moving around from house to house a lot this week because of easter. Pretty interesting development for those experiencing the patch bug. It seems to be caused by the network permission/antivirus/firewall of the computer it's installed on, not the client itself. I've reinstalled various regions of sc2 several times and get the same results every time. On my new desktop, I get the patch bug every single time, but on my laptop, I don't get it at all. The result is the same regardless of installing via CD or downloaded clients.
After I go back home prior to easter, I'll be bringing a portable version of a non-patch bugging client that was installed on my laptop via a portable harddrive and see what answers I can get when I try running it on the desktop that is patch bugging. Once that happens, I should be able to solve this once and for all. Won't be for a while though as I'm staying at my parents house for the next week or so, so I've no access to my desktop.

You'll probably need to use the files in folder A from the clean UI download, else the right side of the picture will be really hidden behind the blue boxes.

Awesome, four positive feedbacks so far. Seems like this definitely solves the patch bug once and for all.
Getting more requests than I'm willing to upload to my website at this stage, so as a way of speeding things up for me, I'll be doing things slightly differently from now on. When I finish a batch of requests, I'll be uploading them all at once in a compressed folder. If I quote your request, it's in the download. The download will have several folders with each quoted persons name on it. The folder with your name has your request in it.
As it turns out, DDS files compress incredibly well too, so it'll speed up uploading for me and makes things less confusing for me on my mediafire profile. This first batch of four requests compressed from 4.4mb to 1.8mb. Pretty surprising for image files.

Teliko, you are a god thank you so much! Also I have a question. The image I requested was for terran, and I kinda wanted to switch it to apply to toss, but when I did, the image shifted to the left, so her head is covered by the "terran zerg protoss random" bar .__.
I do have paint net, but I don't know how to do your awesome fade effect (which looked awesome btw), and I also don't know how to resize to optimal resolution without messing up the resolution (it becomes like 1504 x 930 or something when I try it, i'm a noob at picture editing lol)

No fade effect required for Protoss, I only do it for Terran/Zerg because the offsets for their displays are unfavourable, it just keeps it looking clean. Used full fresh image for this.

Those aren't images, they're text assets actually embedded into the interface. Removing them isn't worth the effort/time it would take to research the location of the assets in the MPQ. The blue surrounding on "View Ladder" is an image, but too small an image to find. I found the two on the right and one in the middle because they're so big, I just arranged every DDS in the MPQ by size and skimmed through the ones at the top. To find the View Ladder one, you'd have to skim like 40,000 images without any clues to its location due to the number of smaller images.

If he's referring to shirogane usagi's works, it is actually from a video game series, but even so, I don't think he realizes that there is a big distinction in styles from western animation/animated-characters from those of the east. I LOVE Shirogane Usagi's work, wow o.o The faces/expressions of the characters are quite simple but effective -- but most impressive is the coloring, pose, and all the other stuff, like the clouds or fire surrounding each character. Such eye candy =D

I'll be writing a more detailed page about this on my website soon, still working on various other problems to make sure the sc2switcher is compatible with everyone.
I made multiple startup wallpapers as can be seen in the google plus ablum. I ended up using this one, which is included in the download in dds format. I don't have the other ones in dds format included in the zip file. If you want a specific one, let me know and I'll convert it for you, or of course you can convert it yourself

Sorry you had to wait so long, was hoping to get more requests than this before I started because I prefer to do requests in bulk, but has been pretty quiet thus far.
With the help of many awesome people, the resolution to the patch bug has been confirmed. If your client started to patch after installing parts of the clean UI, you can find a fix for it here.
Those waiting on requests, I'll start them once I get a few more. I'll only be doing them in bulk from now on, unless of course it's taking a week to get more than two or three requests or something.
Hey Teliko, I dont know if this has been answered, but I am having a problem with getting my new image to show. Ive already changed in and out images quite a few times, but I am trying to do it again with Terran quickmatch, and whenever I log back in after I copy and paste my image into the MPQ using MPQeditor, it still ends up showing the old image. Even when I open the dds file in the MPQ it shows my NEW image. Does it just take some time for it to start showing it?

When you copied the DDS into the MPQEditor, did you get a prompt to replace a previous file, or did it just drop in without any questions? Also, did you make this file yourself or download it, or change the filename yourself?
Doing this somehow messed my sc2 the first time when it tried 2 update. Made me reinstall the game. Since then I never tried it. Maybe the problem was not related with changing the background? Well I don't know. But now I'm not playing sc2 taht much anymore.

That's not really enough information for me, but only changing backgrounds has never messed anything up for anyone, you possibly did something wrong. The clean UI can be a problem for various people if you were using that, but this has since been resolved.

This image was kinda awkward, too narrow to stretch and I couldn't gradient or trim any of the edges because her arm is half cut out of the side of the image so it'd look kinda silly. I've just fit it in unedited for now, but if you can think of a way you'd prefer it, let me know.

To be fair, there have been quite a few. I'd say around 30% of requests made are SC theme-based. The whole point of the backgrounds is to make them what people want, and not everyones interests revolve around SC, so it's understandable. The NSFW ones can be confusing though, I've never understood people who have that kind of stuff as their wallpapers etc, and I'd probably be embarrassed if I had my wallpaper like that and someone else wanted to use my computer, but I guess it's just what most teenagers interests revolve around anyway.

All these images were pretty awkward and didn't turn out as well as I'd liked them to have, the white background makes it almost impossible to make a well disguised gradient without the blend being blatantly obvious and standing out. The second Zerg one probably the worst because she's so close to the edge of the image that I couldn't gradient much without cutting her out. I could have done a detailed selection refine to separate her from the background, but that'd take like half an hour and I've already spent a long enough time on requests tonight as it is :/ Sorry I couldn't do better.
Also, the bottom two images have X's at the beginning of the name so they don't replace each other. Make sure you remove the X before installing them or they won't work.
The hydralisk image that's first (top left) in the Zerg section should have the Starcraft II logo removed from it, because it's really repetitive since it says Starcraft II right above it in between your portrait and the multiplayer tab.

All these images were pretty awkward and didn't turn out as well as I'd liked them to have, the white background makes it almost impossible to make a well disguised gradient without the blend being blatantly obvious and standing out. The second Zerg one probably the worst because she's so close to the edge of the image that I couldn't gradient much without cutting her out. I could have done a detailed selection refine to separate her from the background, but that'd take like half an hour and I've already spent a long enough time on requests tonight as it is :/ Sorry I couldn't do better.
Also, the bottom two images have X's at the beginning of the name so they don't replace each other. Make sure you remove the X before installing them or they won't work.
hmmm i dont know what im doing wrong, but every time i put one of the custom backrounds into the battlenet shared file with the MPQ editor, it doesn't launch the game afterwards, it just stays blank at the planets. i followed youtube guides and the instructions but it didnt work still. I could just live with normal starcraft and redownload it but i want a custom picture ^.^ (im not to good with computers btw)

Image kinda way oversaturated, looks like a completely different person which I'm guessing you did to try and disguise the image from cutting out on the left, but is still slightly distinguishable. Have you tried adding gradients on overlays to blend them out instead?

Not sure which of the two you wanted in the end, so included both. If you want to use the second one, remove the X from the start of the file name. Alternatively you can rename the first one to c9a309d4dd98195a94c061fb6e4a698c9668740c and use it as a main menu, then remove the X from the second and use that as the Zerg background.
thanks so much! however, I'm having a problem. see, while I was waiting, I decided to try and make one for myself. it looked like crap but I kept it until someone with more experience made one. now that you've made it, I tried replacing it, but the old image (that I put on there) keeps showing up instead. any idea what's wrong and/or how to fix it?

I did that and I see why it was difficult to modify this background. The clean UI though makes this very sweet. Thanks for your hard work on this, it's much appreciated!
Yeah, you need really heavy gradients on the left to disguise it. When I'm editing pictures in Photoshop, I usually have a layer with nothing but black on it and keep it on the bottom of my layer list and turn it on after I apply gradients to get a rough idea of how it'd look in-game.
Don't see any reason to. From what I can make out in the screenshots, none of the old backgrounds will be affected, it just adds new ones. The new ones will more than likely be applied to the Battle.net-patch.mpq instead of the Battle.net.mpq which is where all the current backgrounds are kept. There's a chance it might set them back to default or rename the codes used for them or something, but it's unlikely. If anything changes, I'll work it out after the patch. For now, nothing needs to be done.
PLEASE help me out I've been working on this for hours! I recently came across what you were doing and got completely motivated to change my entire Sc 2 game. I've been searching and reading and trying to make some of my own but its hard when the pics are very vertical and i also can't seem to do it correctly. Btw for the Dark mercenary pack I can't find the StarCraft II\Mods\Liberty.SC2Mod\enGB.SC2Assets folder needed for putting the model mods in =/.
Terran (possibly have the reaper on the top cropped down a bit so the pic doesnt have to be shrunk to fit the screen)
Protoss
Zerg (If possible can you take the "Starcraft II" logo off of the top right? would really make a difference)

It wont always be enGB. It could be enUS or krKR or something, it varies based on what region you play on and what language your client it. It'll be something with four letters, two non-caps at the start and two caps at the end.

Hey there ive run into a bit of a problem, i ended up downloading the wrong protoss picture so i went in and deleted that picture file from the MPQ so i could replace it, the problem is now when i try to replace it with the file i want nothing shows up when i click protoss, no zeratul or anything just the standard blue background. Does anyone have some knowledge on this that could help me please?
Think I'm going to call this off for a while. I've done close to 500 of these at this stage over the last year and it's getting really boring for me right now. I enjoyed doing them for ages, but now it's really just becoming a chore, and I'm not that involved with sc2 right now anyway especially with D3 out.
Closing all requests, I might start again in a few weeks when Diablo dies down, but no promises. I'll still accept commissions obviously, feel free to PM me if you're interested. Other than that, I need a break from these.

Not bad. I might consider making a more detailed photoshop template document to make it easier for people to make their own until I decide to start taking free requests again, or a more detailed video guide. I'll see if I get the chance in the next week or so.

Damn, this sucks... not just for us but for Teliko who put all his time into these custom backgrounds. The UI is changing =/
Though, we could "salvage" all this effort by still replacing those new race pictures with the pictures we have; it's just that it would be much smaller, and we would probably have to edit our pictures to make them fit well into the new dimensions.
Though, seems like changing the background for other pages may be fine! :D (loading screen, custom games, SC2 start up screen)
H'm... Haven't been too involved with the beta, so I'm not sure how much this'll set things back. I do intend to keep up to date with it all once it goes live, though. Obviously this new UI is a lot clunkier in terms of hiding the background, but I'll do what I can to make it more visible once they finalize it. No point getting to work now seeing as anything could change. Rest assured, I'll be working on keeping custom backgrounds going and improving the UI however I can as soon as the patch is out and I know exactly they've changed.

Haven't done any work on it myself, but Existor covered it pretty well.
First batch for all the requests above me. As a reminder of how I do this now, all of your requests are in this one download. Extract the .rar and you'll each find a folder with your name which has the .dds you requested inside it.

I can't seem to find the image for the replay background in either the Battle.net.MPQ nor the Battle.net-patch.MPQ. No idea why :/ Sorry man. I did the second image instead, but to install this one you need to put it in the Battle.net-patch.MPQ. Sorry for the inconvenience. Feel free to request the same image for a different background instead.

Sorry for the delay so far, not currently at home and don't really want to update my client on this computer off a 2mb broadband connection. Should be able to get them done tomorrow.
So apparently the patch hit SEA today and EU/NA will be in the next day or so... seems like a waste of time to do any more requests until we can confirm whether or not the patch killed MPQ editing or not. Requests closed until we've gathered more info.
