Korean players DongRaeGu and FruitDealer had to cancel their participation in the World Championship and will be replaced by DarK.FoRcE and SeleCT. The cancellation of DongRaeGu opened up a spot in Group D and DarK.FoRcE was next in line on place 26 in the Season Ranking after Killer, who is the 25th, already replaces Gatored in Group C.
Following Gatored, the drop out of FruitDealer is the second change to Group C. MarineKing was first in line on place 27 but he was unable to confirm his participation. SeleCT and m00nGLaDe are both on a shared 28th place but the Australian player was unable to come and thus the spot will be taken by SeleCT.
in all seriousness i wish he would still play but after what hes done in sc2 (not much but will forever be an icon) and how long hes been playing, what hes gone through, you gotta respect his decision to take it easy, if play at all.
well, we have GSTL with MVP vs oGs and Prime vs ST next weekend. So that's no surprise that DRG and MKP both declined their spots for IEM. These are very important matches for their teams, and also if there is no big prizemoney to win at the GSTL, it is a very important tournament for the korean teams. and MKP and DRG are the most important players for their teams, so really no big deal!
That's really sad. I was looking forward to see DRG's and especially FD's performance and how well he plays nowadays. Oh well.. I'm really happy that they got SeleCT as the replacement. <3
DRG isn't going because MVP has a GSTL match against oGs that weekend. Obviously with Vegas on the line, teams are going to really want to make sure they get to the finals.
FD couldn't even bring himself to act like he was playing SC2 fulltime when upclosegamers did their piece in the ST-house, not surprised at all. As far as I know he didn't even try to qualify for this season of the GSL. Still, he got an invite, why not just go there and get one last piece of the pie before calling it quits, what is there really to lose? DRG I can understand since he's been back and forth to NY and now GSL finals. Add to that the GSTL which is in a crucial stage and I guess he wants to be a winner when GSTL goes abroad
drg has to be crazy, does he know what the prizepool is? , he stands to make a ton of money from tonight's gsl and iem . O wellllllll definitely looks like MMA will be going to the bank to cash in

If DRG wins the GSTL, his entire team goes to Las Vegas, plus he gets to play in the IPL Open Bracket, and he has the weekend of his life with his team in an awesome city.

Still, I guess it's MMA's tournament now, lol.
Not so fast! MC is definitely someone who could give MMA some trouble. MMA is now the favorite, but I don't think it will be as easy for him as Kiev was.
That group D without DRG got a lot easier for the rest. Shame, but good to see there are other people available to step in on short notice. Good luck to everyone in the competition!

drg not being there actually makes the whole thing less worthy to be watched. I watch his games every chance i get because he just wins everything and it looks so easy when he is doing it.
wow... with a 1st place prize of $35,000 and DRG is gonna pass up on that? oGs is missing SuperNova for GSTL and Mvp is no longer a team that being carried by just DRG, their players have improved a lot, I think they can win a team match without DRG now.

the only good reason not to have drg at your event is that no one knows who is going to win the whole thing with crushing performace.

think about it for a second.
he was on the states a week ago. now hes in korea to play the finals. (he can focus on this a lot) he would have to do another travel to play at IEM and then go back to korea again.
pretty sure this is not so health and also, if MVP goes to the playoffs hes going to IPL 4 anyway.
he has a lot of chances to make money, yes 35.000 is a lot of money, but you need to consider other aspects too.

It says in the OP. They didnt pull names out of a hat or something, Select was invited for doing well in past IEM events and being next up in the IEM rankings.

He didn't try to re-qualify for Code A as far as I remember, so probably not.
He did, he was eliminated in the semi-finals of his group. Maybe the reason he can't make it is because Code A qualifiers clash with IEM. They're on March 10-11.
I don't get all this Fruitdealer speculation. Probably no one wanted to pay for his flight, maybe because Startale (is he still on Startale?) is guessing his career is winding down. Unless I missed something and IEM is picking up the player's tabs.
That sucks. DRG has been doing quite well lately and it's always fun to watch him play. As for FruitDealer, I'm sad that he will not be participating. I was hoping to see how he is, since it has been a while of hearing/seeing anything from him. After reading the GSL: Ten Memories to Roar and remembering his storyline run through GSL Open 1, I was really looking forward to seeing FD again SelecT and DarkForce are good replacements, still excited for this tournament.
On March 03 2012 11:28 opterown wrote: sad that MKP isn't coming he definitely could have won this one too
Maybe, but I'd put Supernova and MMA over him in a head to head though...
MKP is ~80% TvT this year. Just saying ;D He's 4-2 against SuNo and hasn't played MMA
I still think MMA has better TvT. Despite the record, for some reason my gut tells me that Supernova would beat MKP, but records don't lie, so I'll concede on the Supernova-MKP matchup.
I think that FruitDealer has retired from SC2. I can't honestly think of him having any other tournaments to go to that would conflict with IEM. It's sad too, he's a player with alot of talent and not enough motivation.
Sad about DRG but understandible. And Fruitdealer ye it did not suprise me the least, seems he's given up on his sc2 carreer ever sinds he switched for lesser practice.
to bad drg is on a roll! and fruitdealer brings back nostalgic memories from the days of reaper dominance, one base all ins, no creepspread and bitbybit...
I understand DRG's choice (and the fact that teams are taking GSTL seriously enough to miss major tournaments is actually good news) but it's a HUGE player for IEM to lose, which is annoying.
Well FD is a LoL "player" now anyways, but really sad since I think DRG was easily one of the favorites to take the hole thing. This will certainly lower my interest in the event overall and also in the 2 groups affected. I just wish they would have just picked some random koreans instead of the next 2 in the ranking, the way they did it is a lot fairer, but also lowers the overall skill of the entire event.

You should consider, that the LoL-Prize-pool has to be higher, because it is shared by 5 guys. So one of the LoL-players wins "just" 10k, whereas the SC2-Winner wins 35k.

The company behind LoL (Riot) heavily supports LoL tournaments, otherwise the prizepool wouldnt be as big. And there are many people who care about LoL.
I wish someone could tell me what FruitDealer is actually up to these days. Does he play in the StarTale LoL team? Does he have any success with it? Then why did he apparently still try to qualify for Code A? (or didn't he? there's conflicting information going around) How much does he practice Starcraft 2 and LoL? etc. All I hear is forum rumors.
FD canceling the trip is no biggy, but DRG is a huge deal. There is the speculation going around he isn`t allowed cuz of the GSTL, but I haven`t heard nothing official. I would appreciate a statement from DRG or his Coach on this matter.

except that doesnt make any sense. why SHOULD each player earn more in a team game if the sport is less developed? 5 player teams dont attract 5 times the viewers of single player teams. if lol is 'bigger' thats fine and dandy, but theres no logic behind 5 man teams = 5 x the prize.

well LoL is techincally much bigger than SC2 atm, or at least i think it is, I remember IEM relseased the viewership numbers for sc2 and LoL and LoL numbers were like three times higher

Why would it be annoying that DRG chose his team over himself? Asian culture always chooses glory for their team, rather themselves. He has a chance to help his ENTIRE team get to vegas. That should be commended as he's giving up a chance at 35k for himself.

i think these days then can win without DRG, and i think they will beat oGs fairly easily without him, but i know what you mean, and i just wish they did let him go IEM

LoL is not bigger ask your self who is actually playing for all of this tournys for LoL its the the actualy companies that makes the game so if that keeps up LoL will colaps on the other hand sponcers are paying for sc2
FD is still better than most players people would choose to name as "good" and even on a bad day he would whoop them...so I don't see why all you all hate...
I luckly was never a fruit dealer fan I saw his style as not lasting. It seems as if he just wasnt passionate enough about starcraft and esports to make his dream of becoming great happen. Darkforce is way passionate darkforce fighting!!

umm Riot puts a huge amount of money into any tournament prize pool. so Riot has auctally given iem a lot of money to make the prize pool bigger. happen for every IEM, and dh, and almost every lan that hosted for LoL, Riot has put money into that tournament. Blizzard doesn't put money into sc2 tournaments, rather they take money out of tournaments.
FD might have cancelled because he wants to participate in code A qualification on 10/11 march? Hopefully it's something like that and not just lack of motivation

i think he doesn't really play sc2 anymore... from what i have heard he is playing lol now
You guys seriously underestimate SeleCT. He needs time to really get the feel for the game and to stay in Korea for awhile, but he has INSANE natural talent and is probably the fastest player in the game. His micro one day will be the stuff of legends. Once (if he pursues sc2 fulltime in korea) he reaches his full potential, he has the chops to win multiple GSLs. Give it a year or so.

Don't worry he will. He just needs a break. He's exhausted. You don't want him to play like he did at MLG arena day 1...where he said he just wanted to take a nap. lol. You can look forward to March 23rd, for MLG Winter Championship. DRG will be well rested by then. The Champion will take another crown by the end of this month...just you wait!

This one is for MMA or a foreigner ( nerchio , dimaga or kas )
Did you not remember DRG on day 1 of MLG Arena? He was exhausted, jetlagged and as a result he played like shit. Let the poor kid rest and enjoy his spotlight. Consider if he goes and loses to MMA or something...would totally rain on his parade.
if you just won the GSL...i highly doubt playing another IEM multi day event of games is even remotely appealing to you. While from a money point of view its smart...from a personal/mental view its not. He wants to celebrate with his teammates etc I bet.
plus he needs to make fun of genius for going carrier on him.

Supernova managed to go even though oGs is still in the GSTL - odd.
