please don't give me the poor student crap... I'm still a student myself and I know what it's like. never met anyone who couldnt afford to hang out on a friday night for a couple of 8$ beers at the bar though... Your one beer would cost me 3 hours of work and my job is still well paid in my country. Best ignore the immature tunnelvisioned (mostly) americans that make those comments-. No reason to pay this much when other similar events have been way less / more content.

I will not pay a single cent for any sc2 event.
I'm sick of this "let e-sport grow" talk. I don't care for e-sport. I don't care of the business model of tournament organisations. I don't care if players get 100k price money or nothing.
I want to see good sc2 games, that's all.
If you guys think that this "e-sport" will grow without guys like me you are wrong. If its not free to watch, only the few "support e-sport" guys will hang in there and it will slowly die. I think MLG understand that. They just want to milk the "gold" guys as long as possible. Who do you think will buy this tickets? Only the guys who already buy gsl and mlg gold tickets. No one else. So basically you are saying that you are a selfish person with likely little income to spend and also think the community is full of people like you. It's possible, in which case the scene will slowly but surely die. What a stellar contribution.

I'm having a hard time understanding the the bit about Gold Membership...
I bought it thinking I'd have access to MLG events for the next year. Maybe I am not reading this right.. but this is not the case anymore?
What exactly did I pay for ...?

There is nothing wrong with choosing not to pay. There is something wrong with demanding that it be free because you don't want to watch it. Remember that this is a "bonus" tornament. Following last years model we wouldn't have any mlg till columbus and then people would complain about the seeding system. If you don't want to watch it then don't watch it they are making the vods free to watch one week after the tourney so it isn't like you will never be able to see the games
where exactly do i demand anything? I dont have a problem with mlg at all. I just say: they dont have anything im interested in.
And just write my opinion that this hole thing is only to get money out of the same people as long as its possible and have nothing to do with growing something. But its your money and your decision to make not my.

please don't give me the poor student crap... I'm still a student myself and I know what it's like. never met anyone who couldnt afford to hang out on a friday night for a couple of 8$ beers at the bar though... I present you: Eastern Europe. Or basically next to any place in the world except NA, Western Europe and Japan/SK... AND I present you germany, where I dont know any student who buys beer for 8$. Most student have about 700-800 Euro per month. 300 goes down for rent, 10 for internet, 40 for handy, 200 for food, 50 for copies, books and other stuff for your studies. Now your left with 100-200 Euro for the month, but haven`t bought one piece of clothes or attended one party. What about the money to drive somewhere from time to time and what if some of your equipment brakes down and you need to replace it. 20 Buck for a livestream is a lot, even for an average german student. Stop making it sound like you arent living fairly well as a student will ya?. I am no student any more, but I remember the times and nobody had much money to spare. That`s the only point I wanted to make, since some comments were like "cmon guys, 20 bucks is nothing. pay it for the love of esports".
Also it's not about just $20. I might spend three digits $ on esports during this year (gsl and other events). It's not really fair to say it's "just" $20, it all ads up. If more tournaments adopt this model there is a lot I just would not pay for, both for money and time issues. The question is if I can get better value for the total amount of spendings. I'm probably more inclined to pay for gsl special events and watch assembly for free during MLG.
That said, if we want esports to grow, people will need to put their money where their mouth is and spend their money on esports. So I honestly wish MLG the best of luck with this even though I think there are better models out there they could try. Maybe for the next event they'll have a better understanding of what the market is willing to pay and adjust it. They really won't know unless they actually try it.
|
They are going to loose so much viewers, I bet not a single european is going to watch winter arena as it costs, its on pretty bad time for europeans anyway and there is Assembly with very nice time schedule.
|
I'll give it a chance....but that price needs to come down just a smidge if they want to get mass viewership. Maybe offer 2nd day reduced fee or something. Either way they should consider whether they want $5-$10 from a lot of people or $20 from a few....supply and demand curves could help after the data collected from the initial test run...

What's the point of flying the players to ny if they arn't going to have a live audience. They are outlaying 100k in costs for what?

No. Im not selfish at all. I dont have little income. Its no problem for me to pay the 20 and i dont think the community is full of people like me. thats 3 misses out of 3. Obvious you just guess around and not even good.

Bad move from MLG to screw the people who paid for gold membership. Also, they should realize how ridiculously overpriced 20$ for two days is, compared to the GSL... I guess they will make more money with this model than with a free stream, but they would probably make even more money if the prise was reasonable

I understand that it is upsetting that MLG is moving to PPV and I agree that price point might be set a little high. However, assuming that advertising will be enough to sponsor these events even after many experts in the community have said that it will not is a little confusing to me.
Asking for another alternative other than PPV is a little silly too since people have been racking their brains about this subject for some time and no one has come up with a better alternative. If companies like Gomtv and MLG do not act now they will not be in business within the next couple of years. The GSL recognized that they needed more revenue and jacked their prices up this year as well. If you want large prize pools, great streams, continuous growth, great casters and the best players then expect to pay.
Lastly, I am positive that MLG was aware that they would have a large drop in viewership. They are running a business and need to maximize profits. There is a sweet spot of viewers and price that leads to the optimal revenue. They might not have hit it yet, but as the year carries on they will probably tweak a few things to get the right price. Yes, a lot of viewers will be left out because they are not willing to pay that particular price that MLG sets but that is the nature of the beast. People need to keep in mind that lots of us don't have a problem with MLG deciding to use fees to pay for their production costs, but that MLG pulled a bait and switch on those of us that were stupid enough to pay for a year of content in advance. I understand that a lot of people here are not upset with the price increase and my post was directed towards those who were.
But I also would argue that this is not a bait and switch. Your gold membership is still giving you what you expected and that is the 4 or 5 championships. Now they have added new content the viewers will have to pay more which makes sense since it costs them more to produce.
I do think a discount for gold members would be a smart idea and something I think they will reconsider in the future.

Seriously, is it affordable? Totaly.
Will I pay it? No. Simply because there is TOO MANY SC2 tournament out there and I can't watch them all. If I have to make a choice, I will sadly have to scrap the one that charge me.
Anyway, with my crappy bandwith, I can't watch HQ stream.
Well, GSL is even charging the same, for more content, higher production value... and the LQ live stream is still free.
Assembly it is.
And those whining about the Gold Membership... it is stated no where that MLG Gold is giving you access to every single piece of content for free... it is simply stated that you get to watch every championship for free, in HD... and it is not the championship, it's the arena. There is actually just MORE content. Gold is still giving you exactly the same thing than before. I don't know why anyone would expect gold to give you access for more than what you paid for, just because they are adding content.

You're getting to watch the grand finals for these things but the qualifiers are 20 dollars a pop. Makes sense I know

I think you also have to take into account that many europeans are not used to PPV. At least to me it's a really strange concept to pay fora single event.
i understand stuff like GSL season tickets or MLG-Gold... But this? Just feels weird/overpriced to me.... I mean, its something else when its like 5$ as it was for HSC3.. That felt more like a "donation" or a way to say thx for something awesome than an actual fee.
Now this here feels like i would pay MLG for something i never asked them for? Flying tons of players for no reason to the US and then charging extra for this really seems weird. As a Gold member i would be really pissed.
Btw: I get the vibe that MLG in general has one big problem: The underdeveloped Proscene in the US. MLG kinda "has" to fly in Koreans and Europeans or the tournament will just be pretty weak alltogether (or at least be looked at as pretty weak). So they need to find a way to get Koreans and to a lesser extend Europeans to the USA which is really expensive...

20$ for 2 days is too much! I ll watch assembly, no doubt about it

I'm sure Sundance will do something about the people who purchased Gold. I bet MLG is just trying this out --- I want to continue to support MLG while telling them this is not the way to goo... hmm

That's a very noble and respectable intention, if they had the funds to back it up. But consider how MLG is supposedly struggling financially it makes no sense at all. You don't do that and then come 'guys, we're broke, we need to try this PPV shit if we're to survive'.
