So Teamliquid posters demand a governing body to hold esports players accountable but vote for Ron Paul because the government is grossly incompetent?
If you're mad that someone else is brazenly trumpeting their beliefs with ignorance, perhaps you should be mad that you are doing it too.

I don't understand why it's such a big deal. Stephano didn't "blow them off," he defeated his semifinal opponent therefore earning him second place.

Following that, he VOLUNTARILY gave ONOG the choice of what to do, knowing full well that he could end up forfeiting the match. He made this decision because he was -tired.-

ONOG decided to bump him to fourth place officially, and allow the semifinal losers to play for 2nd/3rd, and then play Kas. The players got exactly what they expected, some of them even benefited from it, Stephano got his sleep, and we got our finals.

I don't understand where the issue is. Regardless of a "Stephano should honor his commitments," he made his decision not to blow them off, but to get some sleep. Working for 12+ hours a day isn't easy, and you can't possibly expect him to play his best at that time. So we got better games, he got sleep, ONOG got publicity, everyone wins...??

My theory is that this is residual Idra rage... the community see's TOP ZERG BM..... goes into auto-pilot.

Just mindless zombies, looking for a reason to be upset, responding to stereotypes and trolls.

Sure, things out of control are pretty reasonable excuses not to play -- like a pulled muscle f.e. -- but come on, Stephano accepted the invitation and knew perfectly well what he was getting into, he should have planned for it.. on top of that made wait for him an hour or so.. that's just him being completely unprofessional.

No, you can forfeit if you're exhausted and can't continue. Same thing as stephano.

Of course you can, but in that case you absolutely pay a price for it. A professional tennis player getting exhausted and forfeiting because of it is a huge deal, it means the player is pretty irresponsible with his training, preparation and on top of that show lack of temperance. He won't get any invites anytime soon.

No, actually, no one bitches about it. They point out that they have to work at their conditioning, but no one is gonna walk up to them and tell them they're unprofessional and should be punished.

Actually, yes, tired players who quit because of it absolutely lose the respect of their peers, fans and organizers.. that's how it works in any sport.

Djokovic retired from a major a few years back due to exhaustion. I don't ever remember a single article or thread written about how he's unprofessional and that he should be punished.

Oh Nole got a lot of bad press because of it, even until now he's not really a popular player. Still, forfeiting a semifinal because of heat exhaustion is in no way comparable to the situation at hand.
First, he TRIED to play but that day temperature was in the 140s F around the courts.
Second, he apparently has documented breathing problems.
Third, he was not the only player to forfeit because of heat exhaustion, in fact because it was such a recurrent issue the AO organizers decided to enclose the courts and install air conditioning.

Yeah. Actually I really wonder how many TLers do or did a sport at a really high level, be it eSports or real sports, seeing how the well-being of the player is often completeley disregarded under the "HE OWES US THE SPECTACLE. HE MUST PLAY UNTIL HE DIES BY CARPAL TUNNEL. IT PLEASES US".

This situation has already been discussed in a blog and I feel the overall agreement was "Stephano has more than the right to forfeit. He handled this a bit roughly. He could have anticipated that he'd make finals in both tournaments. ONOG took the best decision for the viewers, but not for the players, as Stephano won the 2nd place's prize. And 80% of the posters like drama more than reflexion"

I play and watch tennis, and I can tell you that there's a huge difference between "I practiced solely for a tennis Grand Slam for weeks and now I'm totally pissed that I need to retire from the match because I'm hurt, but that's what I have to do" and "I purposely scheduled two tournaments on the same day and I know there will be conflicts but I'll just forfeit from one later on because I know I won't have the stamina to compete... [ends up being the finals]".

I don't get how this scenario is different from playing a match and not realizing that the match could end up being a 6 hour long marathon and not having the stamina while your opponent does. If you're a tennis fan you should remember the like what... 10 hour game that was split into two separate days back in wimbledon. If they had told them to continue it all in one day it just ruins it by having one player basically tap out due to exhaustion.

Stephano was put in a no-win situation.
He either forfeit (and get screwed by the tournament official who made up rule on the fly - read the MrBitter response in the orginal thread).
He plays the game by alternating 6pools and 12 drone rushes - he would still be screwed by the tournament officials cause:
Quoting:
...we have to be an organization that puts the fans first. Given that principle, I came to the decision to penalize Stephano and move him to 4th place,...
. I dont think fans would like four 6 pools or drone rushes... So he might have been penalized too.

To be honest all tournaments need sound rules. There were no rules posted about this tournament - only the format and map pool.

OR!!!!

Or... or or or or!!!

1. He either TRIES!

OR!

2. He either recognizes ahead of time (responsibly) that joining two tournaments simultaneously might drain his energy and so he might not have the stamina to compete in both at the same time, and makes the mature decision to only play in one.

Whoops.

I hate to break it to you, but that's his job. He needs to win to make money, so if he's able to do multiple tournaments to make a decent income then that's what he's got to do. Players like RainBOw or viOLet basically live off the Playhem Daily tournaments because small tourneys like that provide them with money to get through the day. He didn't want to play, the tournament punished him, and now it's over. Neither party seems too disgruntled, this does not seem like a big deal. What is mature is that Stephano made a decision as far as which tournament he would play, played that tournament, and took the punishment he got for it. What's immature is bashing somebody's reputation on a forum after they've made a decision and are sticking to it.

He made a decision to play multiple tournaments in the same evening. He didn't stick to his decision. That is what people are mostly upset about.
I agree ONOG made the right choice and I do think Stephano deserves some of the respect back for accepting his relegation to 4th place (at least I haven't heard of him being upset by the decision).

Read his tweets, he clearly isn't too shaken by his punishment. And I realize that he didn't stick to his decision, but he's also accepted his punishment. If you break a deal (such as joining this tournament) you are subject to punishment. He broke the deal, was punished, and now we all need to move along.

He does have a point. The caster's statement was out of line. Taking Stephano's actions, the actions of one individual and attributing them to an entire nation is unprofessional as well.

I honestly don't care if Stephano is unprofessional or not, ONOG will get no sympathy from me after those comments on the stream.

Do you guys honestly think before you formulate your arguements?

seriously. wtf is wrong with people.....

Take away all his endorsements and campaign funds then and give them to his opponent or Obama... Same thing. Fill in the boxes jeez. I'm no politician.

give it up dude. your comparison is really lame.

You mad that I'm right? Rick Perry should give his campaign funds to Obama, it's the correct thing to do huh cuz well he forfeited?

Wasn't he voted in by the community? Could this not explain why he agreed to play in two tournaments?

There is indeed a big difference in the situation you mention, but I don't see it in this situation where Stephano was imo thinking more along the lines of : "I'll forfeit the tournament because I'm so tired that if I played it could be bad for my health, and I have other engagement for next week so it is a better option to retain some stamina."

I love when people are talking about legitimizing esports and in the same breath going "lol he was tierd from playing a vidiogame?? he doesn't know what true tired is!". Hahha. (Saw it alot in the LR or some other thread)
And so much drama when the player in question doesn't even give too much of a shit.

The hell...? K, let's stop with the tennis analogies because you don't follow tennis or at least currently. No one holds anything against djokovic for that match, especially considering how now he's basically known for his endurance and heart.

Also, if someone is not fit to play, WHO ARE YOU to tell them they're fit to play? People have different standards, and the guy standing 30 yards away from djokovic on the other side did not have any problems under the same conditions.

Why even post then. People caring about their community is a good thing. There are bigger issues in the world, but TL and starcraft aren't about those issues and aren't vehicles to solve those problems.
Still the best game for spectators.

I'd say it's the exact opposite. If ESPORTs is supposed to be a legit sport, athletes of it are supposed to be professional, it's a job to them. You don't go home from work because you're tired, why should you quit a tournament because of it?
