We also would like to apologize to our fans, to Kim Seong Jin as well as WeMade.Fox for this unfortunate turn of event. We learn from our mistakes and despite the damage done by this to our credibility, which I take full responsibility for, I hope you can keep on supporting and cheering for eSahara and its teams and players.
Mod Edit 2:
eSahara has removed "pepe" from their squad and issued an apology to the real pepe and WeMade.

A former employee of the disbanded WeMade FOX team who is still working at WeMade reports that eSahara did not acquire Kim "Pepe" Sung Jin. The employee claims that Kim Sung Jin is working at WeMade, and was startled to hear of reports that he had signed with WeMadeFox. He suspects that eSahara is either misinformed, or the player they signed was an imposter.
Right after sending Naama and DeathAngel in korea, eSahara is glad to annonce two new players to complete our roster.
First addition is a well known player, former code S and pretty good friend with our player Check, (for our followers on twitter, our "make a prime time" anoncement) the terran Maka!
Kwak Han "Maka" Eul
"I'd like to apologize to my fans for these last months; I couldn't play at my best level due to some health problems. Joining eSahara and having the possibility to play with Check once again is very stimulating. I will work hard to represent my new structure and to get back my code A as soon as possible".
And, as we love terrans, we decided to add former Starcraft:Broodwar player, pepe in our talented squad.
Pepe now lives in a pro house in germany and is a former WeMade.FoX player and used to train with very known progamers such as Midas, LuCifer, Shine, BaBy and NaDa.
He switched on Starcraft 2 3 weeks ago and is ever GrandMaster on NA serv with 70% win rate. His progaming experience will be really benefic to all our players, especially for Naama and DeathAngel.
Kim Seong "pepe" Jin
"I am honored to play for eSahara. It is a brand new experience for me, since it is a new game and a new way of play. I hope I can bring my experience to the team and to make of eSahara an international professional team".
That's pretty cool for the players and for eS. You should really work on these announcement posts though, they don't look very professional plus they have typos etc.. Makes it look like there's not much effort in these.
Noooooooo the terran brothers prime have been completely seperated TT. Hope this means that maka can step up his game a bit though, I enjoyed him alot during beta and early release!
Pepe the next fOrGG when he joins Code A? Let's hope so. But nice pick up nonetheless eSahara. Gonna be sad Prime is losing some members. Hopefully MarineKing won't quit.
eSahara's roster is starting to get strong now. Top-tier foreign team soon?
As for pepe, he was a relatively mediocre BW, decent results initially, then really lackluster performances late in his career. Nevertheless, he does have potential and despite his old age (26 I believe), could show some decent results.
WOOOOOOOOOW, sending deathangel and naama to Korea makes even more sense now, this is great, I'm very excited to see him compete again. eSahara is looking really strong now =D, Hope to see them appear in more team leagues now, especially with so many players training in Korea

No, that's Kas.
Thanks for that, I've been scratching my head all this time wondering who that person was. But makes sense since Kas' name doesn't show up.
But good luck to Maka and pepe in esh. They're forming quite a team.
Yea Mikelangelo is Kas, he was streaming on it yesterday, but his other account is also top50 GM on EU, so what do you mean he doesn't show up :p
on topic: nice to see some bw guy switch
Feel so stupid that I didnt realize it. -.- His name is Misha equivalent to Mihail or Michael in NA. So mikelangelo is kinda same name but its spelled in russian
i think i remember pepe. only terran player in [z-zone], correct? wow i just realized like .1% of people here would be able to confirm. i'm so oldschool aka old ahhhh
I love how this team picks up new players. Slowly but surely, they're building a sick lineup by using lesser known players that have a lot of potential.
Today I saw Verdi calling Marineking a fucking noob after getting 111:ed so I am glad they get more decent players. And BW:ers coming to SC2 is amesome.
Always felt like Maka and Check should have been in the same team. Not sure why I feel like they should be together but they should! ! Maybe this will put eSahara on the map !

No he was a B-teamer that played in PL a few times.
I remember he made quite a big splash on the replay site i used to visit some time in the distant past. I think it was around the time the time AnomiA and keke were coming up. Uncertain about the year. Not making it in pro league doesnt mean that youre a scrub. As far as i can remember he had some sick play, but kinda went off the radar. Looking forward to see what he can do in sc2.

Eventhough I can't recall any Pepe memories from the BW days, being GM after 3 weeks is very impressive. Having a BW veteran on the team can only help. Naama has been kicking butt lately and I love watching Check play. He's having a tough time in GSL but I see so much potential still in Check.

I thought he played Terran in Brood War for some reason -_-
Pepe really wasn't that good. Hopefully he's better at SC2.
Not by progamer standards, but he was still a progamer.
True, but it's what you do with the license afterwards that counts as that is what people will remember you by.
I'm not surprised that it took him 3 weeks to get GM status on ladder. It's worth a mention; however, it doesn't carry as much weight because it is the ladder. Let's see him in several competitions.
hmm interesting that pepe found a team. I remember a friend introducing me to him a few months ago. He was plat on the Korean server. Guess he practiced hard and got really really good.
Grats to him then! and grats to maka. I was pretty sure when I spoke to maka the other day he was joining eSahara, because he was good friends with Check.
And yet another foreigner team powerhouse appears. I wonder if these recent powerhouse teams popped up because there are more players or teams are becoming more centralized.

Because they both have experience with foreign teams, its normal for them to seek sponsorship outside of Korea, especially when Korean income is mostly limited to prize money for most teams.
Wow this is pretty huge considering eSahara managed to get these players in so little time, their roster seems pretty strong and with them going to korea to practice will be pretty nice.
that insane that he is already gm in na with 70% win ratio. I assume that hes been playing for a lot longer than just 3 weeks, but that still really impressive
"He switched on Starcraft 2 3 weeks ago and is ever GrandMaster on NA serv with 70% win rate."......... eSahara is building a pretty impressive lineup with Naama back on form (for a longer period this time hopefully) out of nowhere, hyped to see what damage they can do in Korea!
On January 05 2012 06:53 mcgriffin wrote: woot, Prime is dying after Zenex
Well... Prime just got sponsored by Tt-Esports and have quite a lot of good Code B players (Bboongx2, Creator, Annyeong, Terious, Byun). Don't forget also that MKP is still one of the most popular players in the world.. ZeNEX hasn't really gotten anything in terms of financial backing and the only good players they have are Line and Life (both of which aren't that popular).
Already a better lineup than many "top" foreigner teams like complexity...
I vaguely remember pepe's name from the bw Gom tournaments. Always tend to exaggerate with these announcements though, I'm sure Pepe has been playing on his own for quite a while before joining a pro team, just like Forgg, 70% winrate grandmaster in 2 weeks from starting sc2 sounds kinda bogus.
That 3 week playtime has to be high overexaggeration.
Anyhow, if it's NOT, he'll win GSL in next 6 months. Because you don't get to your top condition in 3 weeks by any chance. It's a bit pressuring to advertise new player like this, as if he's wonderkid who'll definately win everything soon.

On one hand I remember that whole craziness when multiple people said viOLet had no idea what AZK was (and violet himself denied it on msn to tod) and so forth when the news of him first joining that team came out, and then it ended up to be true.
On the other hand sindrum does seem credible. For now I've edited his post into the OP, we'll see what has happened when I wake up tomorrow morning.

Auctally it was only half true and half false. He only played for AZK for ipl3 and that event only. He wasn't a part of the team, just sponsored by them to go to the event.
Think of Choya before fou was bought out. FXO was going to sponsor him to MLG and he would wear the FXO uniform but still be on FXO. But it ended up FXO bought out fou

Choya's case was different. Boss did say that he was actually doing choya a favor as a friend by sending him to MLG, and choya decided to return the favor by wearing the FXO uniform. I don't think that had anything to do with the acquisition specifically.

I can vouch for Sindrum, as the ex-team manager and a very honest guy, also there was a guy, fake nicking as Kim seoung jin on skype, contacting team managers in Europe, saying he had ex-BW pros and if he got a laptop or computer sent to him they could have him on their team... hopefully eSahara have not had this happen to them.

They way this is worded, it almost seems like someone was faking a Korean's attempt to use english T.T
But really, how can something like this happen? I feel like SC2 needs to be more formal with contract signings. Screw doing everything over the internet, just pop that contract straight in front of him.
Wow this is embarrassing...I do agree that if a team never does business face to face, this is what can happen. Oh well, I guess it's my time to join this party!
I feel bad for WeMade as they really got the wool pulled over their eyes, but still, the fact they made it even possible for this to happen is a little embarassing.

That's chunsang. The first replay of thousands i ever watched ! What an epic tvt
I seem to remember pepe[z-zone] vividly in some epic game. Maybe it wasn't that one or even against Boxer but at least this little fraud made me nostalgic for old school BW.
At first i thought eSahara was an other fake/not serious team french got the secret but they are established from a long time now and they never had problem with there cs1.6 team wich was send all over the world. No we learn Naama and deathangel got there journey in korea and that Maka joins the team. Even if this pepe is a false one if he's good enough to be GM on Kr ladder with 70% winrate that wouldnt be a bad choice to continue with him imo.
It's too bad for eSaraha I hope all teams learn from this - they should conduct acquisitions in a more formal manner. Does this mean that liquipedia now has to be reupdated - everything would be perfect if eSahara actually HAD acquired pepe..
Damn, didn't know such things could still happen nowadays with professional teams...
I guess this kinda disqualifies eSahara in some way, if such things can happen you're absolutely doing something wrong imho. Too bad, because I had the feeling they were in for a serious run! Either way, they still have some decent players, and still sent out 2 players to Korea, so I guess 'shit happens' and it's time to move on ^^ I'm curious to their official statement though...

What a shame that this is a fraud :S I feel bad for eSahara because they're really trying hard to have a solid SC2 team. This ruins it a bit for them. This guy should just get kicked off the team, even if his rank and winratio are good... If he lies even before he's in the team, imagine what could happen later.
I've been able to talk to RetoX and he confirmed that "pepe" has been removed from the squad and that the whole scenario has made him feel really ashasmed.
At least we had 1st drama of the year, 2012 will be for eSahara :p
And we added some fame ratio to pepe and showed him that he still has a lot of fans. Real Kim Seong Jin, if you read me, we keep you a slot into esahara team whenever you wanna join!
Now every time we'll make an annoncement people will ask us if it's the real player or not ><
If we have learned anything in 2011 it is that esports dramas are very good for people's success in competition, for example: puma-drama, it was kind of the start of his career (althoug winning nasl 1 was before that, this kind of hurts my point TT) stephano-drama: after that he won just about everything except mlg and dreamhack tl-huk-eg-thing
So i expect PePe to have great success in 2012 now, even though he's not playing anymore :D probably he gets a promotion at Wemade or something^^
Very nice that they got Maka, but I hope that they won't "steal" (I know it's not stealing since they are Check's friends) any other Prime member, at least not MKP (probably not but hey he was in Prime instead of IM because of Check ><)

I think someone on Maka's stream said he left Prime but that may have been after he was picked up by eSahara but before the announcement.

How is it unprofessional to be scammed? It reflects poorly on their initial decision but it's not like the imposter was playing games under their name and making appearances. He was still in the process of joining the team when the fraud was revealed. Unprofessional is knowing he isn't the real Pepe, representing him as such and then only once the rest of the community cries out, going back on him.
Being scammed can happen to anyone. Just ask someone who's lost a pair of headphones.

how the hell do you mix people up like that? He wasnt in the process of joining the team. He had already joined. eSahara's fairly well-established as an eSports entity, and I'd say it's more professional than a lot of the Korean teams, especially pre-PuMa "scandal." It's unfortunate this happened to them, and the signing may have been unprofessional -- I don't know to what extent they got scammed and how much information was provided, how much they double-checked everything -- but their response is absolutely professional, IMO.
Anyways, face-to-face meetings are difficult if your base of operations is ... not in Korea. Has JYP even had a face-to-face with Alex Garfield yet?

It's common for teams to sign players without meeting face-to-face. In the case of contract signing, the two parties are usually not together when the signing takes place. I don't know how eSahara got ahold of the impostor, but I'm guessing he contacted them first and expressed an interest in joining, or they contacted him under false pretenses. Either way, it's not their fault, there's only so much fact checking you can do from across the world.

If he hasnt met with Alex Garfield, you can bet that he's met with someone else from EG who has that specific responsibility. In the case of EG, which is based in United States. Every player is employed by EG, meaning, that just like any other job in the US, you have to provide the organization with a certain amount of official documentation so that your employment is legally recognized. This is important because when you start travelling the world, you're not getting a Visa for being a tourist that likes to visit places, but instead, it's part of your work. This makes a HUGE difference.

Yes, it is their fault. You're committing to flying someone around the world to represent your brand and sponsors and you don't even know who that person is? That's like me going to work at a McDonald's and they don't bother to ask about my social security number or house address. No self-respected employer just says "Hey, you work for me now" and doesn't make a mark on the books or not bother looking into the books at all
This happens in organisations weather you like it or not. I am sure eSahara will improve their system of recruitment. It is not like the guy was bronze league or anything. I remember a few years ago a guy got his mate to phone up a football manager in UK and pretend to be someone else, guaranteeing that this guy was a very talented professional football player. he joined a team, went out on the pitch in an official league game, and turns out he wasn't any good at all and got substituted about 10 minutes later.
Pepe's recruitment has been done a few weeks ago. While we were dealing with the player, he showed a very good knowledge of the Starcraft : Broodwar scene, including confidential information about some of the players and the KeSPA itself, intel that was confirmed by several different Korean sources.
no matter if it is eSahara's fault or not, at least now, we know(should think) that something like this will never happen again, just as almost all the other dramas have done, like naniw'a probe rush and the stephano situation, as well as many others, we know we are past those, and that they will never happen again. On another note, I really like eSahara's response to this, they take full responsibility, instead of blaming it on someone else

At least now we know eSahara isn't a real team and their players aren't actual employees seeing as there's no form of contract and they "hire" people without even knowing if they exist. Awesome.

So uh, signing a player isint worth a plane ticket out to korea to actually see if its really him? How unprofessional by eSahara... I don't understand how a team can blindly try and sign a player without meeting face to face first to discuss it..

You think all teams pays a trip to manager to sign a player? oO
If you sign a korean player - and you aren't a factory such as EG - you'll pay like 1k€ (for EU) or like 2k€(for US) just to see your player? oO
Contract can be signed on the internet, it's pretty easy to fake your identity, as according to esahara's statement, no money they involved, means that pepe might not have been contracted. Few team don't contract their players and most on EU team do "fake" contracts (no legal impact).
eSahara got pretty screwed on that one, very bad move :/ But i don't think we should spit on them, it's still a pretty good team.
Teams may not always fly to the player's location to meet them in person, but the fact this blunder actually happened makes me think that the team communicated with the player only through email. Would it be that hard to make a video call or phone call at least???????

OK it's clear now. Flash tried to switch undetected by KeSPA with a fake name.
The entire story is kinda funny but it's bad for eSahara's reputation... Now people will remember them as the team of "The blonde chick" and "fake pepe" (at least until Maka win GSL) I wish them the best
Lol this is funny. They should have video chatted or asked him to show ID via scanned document. Does this mean anyone can fake to be a player with relatively low profile and get into eSahara? The recruitment system is fatally flawed wow!
They need to learn from the mistake, and other teams should take note if this. They should have contacted WeMadeFox to confirm this signing long ago as well.
By far one of the weirdest situation Ive read about the SC2 scene. I mean.. what was that fake Pepe guy thinking? How was he planning on showing up to events, meeting the team etc?
I'm not sure if this is a good choice. eSahara has some members that are very BM. For example, when MarineKing went up against Verdi on ladder, Verdi rage quit saying "fu noob." I have no respect for the team.
On January 05 2012 19:47 AIOL! wrote: Even if this pepe is a false one if he's good enough to be GM on Kr ladder with 70% winrate that wouldnt be a bad choice to continue with him imo.
Are you kidding!? Even if he was a grandmaster with 100% winrate there’s no way they would let him in after obtaining his spot by lying and in doing so seriously embarrassing the team. If you wanted to take it one step further he has technically committed fraud and I'm pretty sure he's liable to have legal action taken against him (though I’m sure eSahara just want to forget about this and move on as quickly as possible).
I find it hilarious how this only came out due to the that chance that a WemadeFox employee happened to stumble on the thread and essentially say, “lol, wut?”
Could you imagine the shit storm that would’ve happened if this hadn't been uncovered earlier and they’d asked him to play at an event and he just gave them a “lol, j/k, I’m not who I said I was” or even worse if he actually turned up to the event and still claimed to be Pepe XD

Idk why if he was good enough, he could'e just joined a team outright but maybe the bw experience factors in a large proportion of whether a team takes him or not.
Interesting to have this come out. As we see smaller/lesser-known teams try and build up a korean roster (think esahara, legion, etc.) there are obviously a bunch of problems like this that appear. Now I (and several others I'm sure) are wondering about how teams actually go about verifying the identity of a player. Especially with koreans, very few (if any) stream with a webcam or make vlogs or anything like that so its hard to verify this sort of thing. Anyway, good thing this came out and I wish all the best to eSahara.
which pro house ??? if you know that he in that pro house you should go to meet him -"- and you tell us that he have 70% win rate in NA GM ??? what id?

I feel so bad for koreans who leave their high profile teams to join these kinds of foreign teams. It seems like the teams take advantage of the language barrier and the koreans desire to go to foreign events. Would Maka really join this team if he knew that the pepe was not wemade and that this team is rated so low in the big picture?

Check the makas friend talked to him about joining team and obviously Check thinks this is good team if he wants to drag Maka here aswell, and what do you mean by "rated so low"? This team started like 3 months ago and they already got nice line up and they are sending ppl to Korea.

They should have known. The imposter that was pretending to be Pepe is a KNOWN scammer and imposter within teams. I believe the person at fault is the one that decided to recruit this KNOWN imposter. This guy's attempted to be apart of SK, ButtonBashers, and many other organizations pretending to be someone he's not.
Learn to research facts before you recruit and go through with an actual contract (aimed towards the organization).

If this is true, this is really bad practice. (the obvious reason aside) I would think the team management would want to meet the person fact to face, learn about them to ensure they are going to fit in well with the existing team. I would think if you end up signing someone who does not get along with the rest of the members, this could be potentially very toxic for the team seeing as how many of them live and work in such close quarters. Seems like a plane ticket is a small price to pay to avoid that type of situation and ensure a good energy throughout the team. This, on the other seems more like 'cut and paste' form of team management, I'm a bit confused by it.

#2 is probably the main reason. Someone who is pretty good wouldn't get paid nearly as much as an ex-BW pro who is just switching over and is getting kinda good.
Wait, why would you (of all people) impost as the progamer pepe. no disrespect to pepe but the farthest he made in his career was the gom ro16 afaik... Even tasteless was pretty clear about disliking his play.

That's what makes him the perfect target. Ex-BW pro no matter how insignificant carries a lot of weight considering how many players who never so much as made it out of the B-team have had success. If you were going to steal someone's identity you'd want someone just barely noticeable enough so a handful of people remember him, yet obscure enough that nobody will really care too much so they won't bother double checking to see if it's the real deal. Plus, pepe had left progaming so it was unlikely for the man himself to catch this fraud.
Lol.. I think this is kind of hilarious. Didn't it say he already lived in the house? It would have been interesting if he could have pulled it off, and played at events and stuff.
