Quantic has announced on their website that former IM/QIM player Apocalypse has joined their roster.
Quantic Gaming is proud to announce the addition of Min Hyung “Apocalypse” Kim to our StarCraft 2 team roster.
Apocalypse is a long time Korean Grandmaster’s League player, finishing in the top 50 last season. After scouting in Korea, we believe Apocalypse's potential enormous. His performance in the IPL Team Leaque combined with his dedication and passion for StarCraft, as well as his incredible work ethic, made the decision to pick him up an easy one.
...
It’s great to have you joining the team, Apocalypse. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Apocalypse: Hi, my name is Min Hyung Kim. I am a 21 year old Terran player. I currently live in the beautiful city of Seoul, South Korea, and love it here!
How are you enjoying being a member of Quantic Gaming so far?
I love Quantic. They have made my dream of becoming a pro-gamer come true, and I am very appreciative. It feels so good to be a part of the team.
this guy has tried to qualify for code A the past 3 seasons at least . so i wouldn't really be expecting any instant results from this guy since hes been around for awhile. He has been a GM in KR though so hes definitely good.
I don't even understand why Apocalypse was on the review thread... there have been plenty of more notable players than him. He's always been high on the ladder but only because he plays a heck a lot. Other than that he hasn't done anything notable.

That's the entire point of picking a "breakout" player... someone who isn't notable.
You're not exactly going out on a limb with a prediction if you're picking someone who's already established to break out.

Well, pick someone who's shown themselves to be really good on Korean tourneys (ESV Tournaments). Eg. SlayerS_Crank, ZeNEX Life, many others.

Yeah, again, the ESV tournaments are pretty widely regarded as a predictor of upcoming potential GSL results, so it really would be pretty easy to pick break out players from that.

Exactly. This is going a little bit off topic but, it feels as if they needed to add a Korean there since GSL has quite a huge following and saw some random Korean Terran who seemed to be pretty good, assumed he signed with IM and assumed he would be a beast because of that.
Nevermind the fact that Apocalypse has been around on the ladder a lot of times, and is known as one of those grinders who isn't that good but just gets really high ranks due to the frequency of his playing, and nevermind the fact that there are so many other good Koreans who most haven't heard off yet.
For anyone saying that apocalypse is anything less than amazing, you very obviously are not familiar with him for more than a few games. He's a total beast and most people on Korea already know it. He's pretty famous there despite his non-pro ish status. It's hilarious to see him being referred to as "some random korean terran". This is huge and exciting news for QxG / us as foreigners who will likely get to see even more of him now. I don't even play T but I'm excited because this guy is awesome to watch. Really strong and fortunate pick-up for QxG.
...am I the only one who looked at the sidebar and thought "Oh, lol, first THE WORLD ENDS IN MY TOWN CAUSE ITS 2012-thread already"? =S
On topic: I was under the impression he was one of those "Play all day, never get to the same level as people who play way less"-guys. Am I confusing him with someone?
He wasn't in IM before (as Tyrion stated), only in QxG then QIM and now QxG again.
He doesn't seem to promising from what I've seen but then again I have no clue how he plays in practice and in ladder while under no pressure. Nevertheless, good luck to him and Quantic!

Dunno if you guys actually noticed, but the IM coach wrote in the awards thread before he tweeted. Quite early, like page 3 or something that Apocalypse wasn't on team IM :o

Even CreatorPrime.
He has some experience, but if i recall he is 15?
I wouldn't really put Creator in there, as he's had a lot of showings in GSTL and the KSL etc, compared to Crank, who has really only been shown in the last few ESV Korean Weeklies, or HyuN who has only played two broadcasted sets so far. I listed MujuK because he's a teamless player that made it into Code A last season (if my sources are correct he's being scouted by oGs).
I'd also add lOvShinystar to that list, especially if his parents allow him to join a team in 2012.
Anyone capable of reaching and holding Korean GM #1 for a significant amount of time is a pretty safe card as far as new recruitment-options go, even if he's still fairly unknown publically

I dont agree with you. There needs to be integration for both the foreign and korean scene to grow.
On January 31 2012 05:25 Moosy wrote: I think Koreans should stop joining foreign teams, that's what I think. I'm sure countless people would agree with me.
what does it even matter if your opinion is agreed upon when there is no substance to its reasoning? there should be no racism in starcraft. if anyone finds that joining any team is the best choice for them, they should join it, whether the team is korean or the player is korean or either of them aren't.
Korean players wanting easier prize money, "foreign" teams wanting to look good by grabbing as many Koreans as possible. It's a weird trend. I can see why though, from both sides of the coin.
And also... mujuk? Didn't he play a televised BW game or two about 4 years ago or something..? I seem to recognise the name vaguely.
This pick up just seems like Quantic was desperate for a Korean player as long as the player was in GM. There are so many better prospects out there... Creator, Maru, Crank... I am just left confused here.
We played vs Apoc on Quantic during the NASTL Qualifers. He managed to take down to our of players he's pretty good. He also all killed MG now known as Icons of Vanity and I believe nMX so he's definitely got skill. Our player Wubbles defeated him but ya he's very strong.

Did crank not play alot in he ipl arena they were doing before the team league?
Everyone is saying crank is this unknown but slayers have used him in almost team league for a while now
I'm happy it's finally announced. I've known Apoc and practiced with him a decent amount since I'm in the same clan as him on the KR server. Super mannered guy and he definitely deserves a chance to show everyone his potential. He was one of the best Korean amateurs out there! Apoc fighting!

Sorry to off topic. HyuN is out of TSL?
That sucks if he is off, i thought he would be their best breakout player.

As far as I know, crank is still on slayers so he could have just picked random players for his example

So far most of the posts from VirgilSC2 that I see are posts pretty much bragging about how much he knows about the "scene" and his "contacts". Very annoying. If they picked up Apocalypse they most likely picked him for a good reason and your job is not to put down a player who is trying his best to become great. Not to mention most of the players you mentioned are already on teams. Perhaps you are implying that foreign teams really "should" poach players from Korean teams who have worked hard to make their players shine.
Imagine if Apocalypse decided to check out TL with his (I assume) poor english and asks his friends to translate the comments for him. Sees these posts. Gets heartbroken. =[
Congratulations to the player for getting on the team, and go die in a fire to people who are going "WHO IS THIS?" "WHY NOT XXX?"
It's really quite hilarious to see the amount of posts by people who don't know shit about shit but think they do.
It's like when Huk wasn't performing for a while and people were massively underrating him while to anyone who played him on ladder or practice knew he was one of the top 3 or whatever protoss players in the world.
People kept underrating him until he won dreamhack. I'm not saying this means Apocalypse is a Huk level slept on player, but using players like Mujuk, Maru or Crank as 'significantly' more noteworthy players is a joke. He's definitely on all of those guys level at the very least lol

very good point
i played apocalypse about 5games and hes a monster and plays 12-14hours which is alot more than most koreans so he will do wonders soon ^^
Since it seems my post in this thread has been taken in a different light since the edit of the Original Post, let me explain:
My post regarding HyuN/Crank/MujuK was not in response to Quantic signing Apocalypse. Rather, it was in response to a bit mentioned in the article at the end of the 2011 Wrap-Up done by the Team Liquid writing staff. I don't remember what the original post here said, but it should be known it was NOT the current OP.
I was simply saying I thought it strange that they (the writer[s] who picked 'upcoming players to watch') made a strange decision in Apocalypse over fairly unknown players with astounding moments of brightness at the end of 2011. (See HyuN, Crank, and MujuK)
I think it's important to note that this thread had posts transplanted from almost exactly a month ago. If you look, the OP is dated Jan. 31st 2012, but the first posts start from January 1st 2012.

Get a life.
This is exactly the kind of reaction changing an old thread to a new topic incites. Just to let you know, I have quite a life; I work a full time job, I'm in college, and I spend the rest of my free time doing something I'm passionate about which just so happens to be E-Sports. If you don't like the information I share, that's your prerogative but please don't insult me for doing so. Yes, I happen to have "contacts" and yes, I mention them when I post information for one reason: At this point, I'd like to believe a significant amount of people can at least recognize if I post something and mention my "contacts" that I'm not just talking out of the side of my mouth. It (hopefully) saves me 3 pages of people asking "source?".
If you have an issue with me please feel free to send me a PM and I'd be happy to discuss it with you. As I just recently elaborated, this thread was originally of a different subject about a month ago, and my post was not in direct comment to "Quantic Signs Apocalypse"

Yes! this! Sometimes I log onto KR in the afternoon EST around like 3~5pm and hes still laddering (which is around like 5~7am KST) He's definitely a hardworker that's for sure
Always see his name on KR players' streams. I do think apocalypse played a lot of games on ladder with all the Code A/S players. Wish him all the best!

Nah man Apocalypse is a beast... he always has incredibly tight build orders, amazing micro and puts people through hell before they get a win... most of the times that I've seen TL streamers like HongUn, Huk or Hwangsin run into Apocalypse on ladder he's torn them a new asshole. Don't underestimate this guy... he's damn good!

yeah i agree 100%. I just tend to ignore people on the forums nowadays actually. It's no use trying to tell or prove by giving them facts. Some people will never change their opinions about certain stuff.

So what you are saying is that you play incredibly greedy?
No what he is trying to say/disguise is "I beat Apocalypse so he had to cheese me, fuck i'm good" with a slight hint of balance whine
Also Jinro although i agree with what you are saying you should know by now that people are fickle. If results are not being thrust in their face with a big fat "WINNER" on it then they will speculate and talk shit about a players level (Which they have no idea about) until said results come along, then say "I always knew XXXX was awesome". Everyone knows best and very few are able to keep their mouth shut when they have no idea what it is that they are actually talking about, human nature i suppose.
People in the starcraft community are ridiculous on when deciding who is "good". People were saying MVP and MC were "terrible" just because they were slumping. I even see quite a few comments saying some players who are in Code S are bad. Just because they havent won a GSL doesnt mean they are bad by any means.

Please don't shove off your ignorance around here. You imply that he isn't worthy, yet at the same time you say he's "always been high on the ladder" - the Korean ladder. Anyone who can make it top 50 Korean ladder deserves to be in a noteable team. Don't ever bring up the arguement that player x is only good because he plays "heck a lot", it's rather obvious. To be a progamer you need to play a lot; find a top class gamer - MMA caliber - who plays this game casually.
Apoc is one of the most mannered and hard working guys I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He is extremely passionate and motivated, and I know he will do well.
Expect to see a lot of awesome games out of this guy
