Considering how the prize pool difference between 1st and 2nd place is huge, this is sort of spoiling the results indirectly.

Then why the hell do you read news on STARCAFT website.
Why are people always surprised about finding spoilers on biggest website of SC. This always bugs me.

Gratz to MMA

Get off TL until you watch the games if you don't want to get spoiled.
Also, unless you're keeping very close track of MMA's winnings, 2nd place was possibly enough for him to exceed $100k. How do you know for sure that you were spoiled?
Oh, you clicked on the tread like an idiot. Good job.

How does MC have more money than MVP? That is weird seeing as how MVP has won more championships.

nice write up but would of been better tommorow

Everyone knows TL is the biggest sc2 website in the world. If you've been here before, you know that there is always a spoiler thread after every major event, and if you didn't know that, you should expect there to be one, come on, this is THE BIGGEST sc2 website in the world. If you still come here before watching the match, it's your fault.

The title doesn't directly spoil the finals, MMA has won a GSL before and has placed highly in numerous other GSLs. You guys need to stop fucking bitching about spoilers when you are the ones who clicked on the thread.
Also, gratz to MMA and thanks for all the translations that you do ^^

Nice article, I wouldn't worry about it. I bet 90%+ of people who cry about spoilers enjoy playing the victim role and are actually looking to get spoiled results so that they can then make posts of e-outrage. It's seriously like the e-sports version of Munchausen's syndrome.

lol, I knew when I saw this. Someone would be spoiled by the title. It's too easy to come to that conclusion.

The spoiler thing sort of confuses me. I mean, I understand the sentiment just not how many people share it. When I'm not home and the Man U game is on I ask what's the score. When the Carl Froch and Andre Ward fight is over tonight and I'm not home I'm gonna ask who won and how did it go. I don't think it's the tournament factor, either... the world cup isn't like this. Just interesting to me. : )
|
Title is fine. We had a big poll about this not too long ago, and I seem to remember it being massively in favour if ending the spoiler hysteria. If you want to avoid Starcraft 2 spoilers that much, don't go to the biggest Starcraft 2 site.
And even if you don't agree with that, how does this thread title spoil anything? The only way it does is if you for some reason know exactly how much MMA has made, and that it wouldn't put him over with a second place finish. And anyway, if you actually click on the thread and read the OP, you deserve to be spoiled.
|
People whining about spoilers are starting to get really out of hand. You know well enough that you're greatly increasing the chances of the results being spoiled if you come to a site like this so why would you do it and then complain about it? The world doesn't move on your personal schedule. If you care that much about avoiding spoilers take up the responsibility yourself to avoid them rather than bitch about people not catering to you.

... everyone saying thanks for spoiling it... 1. Why haven't you watched it yet 2. if we want E-Sports to grow we are going to need to realize that spoilers won't exist just like in other professional sports. Does ESPN or any other sports show/magazine/newspaper ever have spoilers? No. They tell you straight up because that is how it is.

Thats how i feel, if i know its live somewhere(or it already happened), i need to know the score. I've never been able to stay away from a LR thread if for example GSL is going on.
What confuses me is that people complain about spoilers when they visit a starcraft 2 news website.......
Maybe teamliquid.net needs to announce a policy of their stance on the whole spoiler thing.

This is the exact reason I sucked it up and stayed up all night watching the finals. I already had the round of 4 spoiled for me :/
To some people, like myself, TL is more than just about SC news, I come here for community everything - for general chat, sports & games, and blogs. Just because ESPN posts results right away out in the open, doesn't mean we have to (without spoiler tags). Are some of you seriously trying to justify not showing a little courtesy?
Some people can't even watch streams live due to poor internet or Gom player issues (like myself for quite a while). They shouldn't have to have their results ruined because they are obligated to watch vods.
|
god this spoiler shit is so annoying if you dont want to be spoiled dont come here until you watch the games, every1 does that when they REALLY dont want to be spoiled.

The title doesn't really spoil anything you know. Unless you knew MMA's prize winnings prior to the match, in which I doubt many people would've known. It does heavily imply that MMA won, but you can't confirm it till you click the thread, which is stupid if you're looking to avoid spoilers.
|
yeah this is pretty dumb founded and obvious....spoilers..
|
lol @ ppl complaining about spoilers
|
uhmm, MMA would get into the 100k even if he has lost, so no it wasn't a spoiler.
|
I guess a lot of people in this thread have never been to TL before. TL has a policy on no spoilers on the homepage for 2 days after an event, which includes no spoilers in topics of threads. They view themselves as a portal to access VODs and LR threads for info. This is why they have a spoiler free policy.

This thread has been awfully derailed by people complaining about quasi-spoilers.
On topic, I think Nestea has made a ridiculous amount of money. I wonder if anyone will be able to catch him with the smaller prize pools and better competition these days. I kinda doubt it O.o

all GSL now have max 50 mil won prize

Lol at people complaining about spoilers.
If I miss a series I really want to see, I force myself to avoid TeamLiquid until I've watched it. Maybe you guys should do the same.

this spoiler whine is so annoying...sheesh.

It's kinda sad that GOM halfed the prize pool in an even more competitive and higher-level setting of SC2. It's also kinda sad that they're not upping the prize money next year even though they have less events.

the reason the open season was 100k because there was only 3 for that year also starcraft 2 was just released they wanted to create sort of a hype around it with the large prize.
Even if they aren`t upping the prize money they far and away have tons more prize money than any other sc2 league out there.

Yes.. I accidentally hit a spoiler for the MMA vs DRG game on TL and reddit (I was tired and didn't think before I opened either site), but I just sighed at my tired fail and watched the games anyway.
I didn't post on either place to vent my rage at a spoiler title. Major congratulations to MMA, and not forgetting a major congratulations to DRG either. Both of them played spectacularly.

Exactly what was spoiled? He didn't say who won in the title...he just says that someone broke 100k in GSL earnings. People need to stop being overly sensitive about spoilers when there was no spoiler to be had. You had an inference.....it just happened to be correct.

Allot of people that doesn't know the TL Ten Commandments I see:
THOU SHALL OBSERVE FORUM ETIQUETTE that can be found at: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=17883 clearly states that:

Congrats to MMA.
To everyone complaining about spoilers: don't browse the internet if you don't want to be spoiled. seriously, just don't, go directly to the vods and starting watching. The rest of us want to see ESPORTS be glorified across the internet.

on topic. I think it's awesome how much some of these players have been able to earn. I'm curious how much went to teams, how much the players earned from their teams and possible individual sponsorships. Also, I still think it would be better if the prize money was more spread out (there's a serious drop off after MKP @#7 - why is he listed as ?).

Nice list, good to see how much they all got just from GSL (I think the info at other sites is their combined prize winning). This spoiler whining is pathetic, if you don't want to be spoiled exercise a modicum of fucking self control and don't got to the biggest esports news site before watching it.
|
Yea cmon dont spoil for others >.<
Anyways, sort of sucks the 1st and 2nd place prize is so different, I wonder if they wanted to do that to give them more pressure to get 1st place? I would have expected something more like 35,000 and 15,000, perhaps they didn't want to lower the first place prize because 40k is already a lot less than the usual 50k ?
Poor DRG he almost won haha. But I'm an MMA fan and even though DRG lost at least he didn't lose 4-0. He showed great games.

When someone PVR's a major sports game, they don't listen to the radio, watch tv, or go to most websites. Why is SC2 treated differently? Snape kills Dumbledore. And Dumbledore told him to do it.

Whenever I want to catch up on games. I always make sure not to log on TL, Twitter, FB, or Reddit before I watch the VoDs. I don't understand how people can be THAT upset if they don't take those precautionary measures.
|
People who complain about spoilers don't go far enough out of their way to avoid spoilers. Unless it's the rare exception like Harry Potter, where people were walking out of stores the night the last book released shouting spoilers at the crowds, you need to take it upon yourself not to get spoiled. For the past 10 years I've had only 1 game spoiled for me BECAUSE I WENT TO THAT GAME'S OFFICIAL FORUMS, have only had SC games spoiled when I go to reddit/twitter/TL/ESFI. I've never had a TV show spoiled for me and I usually only start watching shows once they're either over or have 4+ seasons finished. On rare occasions I have a friend who is a dick yell a spoiler for a movie at me.
Point is, if you don't want to be spoiled, the burden is on YOU to avoid it, not the community. Didn't catch it live? Avoid SC news/community sites until you've seen it.

That's fair enough. You're able to watch a series like last night's and enjoy it even though you know the results - I'd watch it and be constantly thinking "FUCK this would be so much better if I didn't know DRG wins the next 3 games and lost an epic game 7."
I think the main thing for me is that Game 7 was so insane and back-and-forth, if I knew before the game started that MMA won, it'd kill it for me.

|
What's with the complaining about spoilers on the first page?
People keep going "I WANT SC2 TO BE CONSIDERED A SPORT", but you don't want any official articles on the subject for like, X amount of days after release? After football/hockey games they are discussing the results EVERYWHERE. After the NBA playoffs, newpapers are talking about it and regular news channels are on it minutes after. The fact is, you just need to suck it up. What makes competitive sports amazing is the casting and information and records broken behind them. The sooner we can get beyond this silly concept of "spoiling" results even after they have been broadcasted, the sooner we can be legitimized more. If you don't want to "spoil" yourself, then don't go on the freaking websites dedicated to SC2 news.
Very well damn done by MMA, nonetheless. A great accomplishment.

Spoiler complaints are so dumb. Watch the games, then head to TL if you're actually concerned about being spoiled. Can you imagine? "What the hell! The Mavericks beat the Heat last night? Laugh Out Loud. What do you think the community of a Starcraft 2 website is going to be discussing after a huge year-end tournament just finished? Why are you going to the sports & games forum? Are you going to check results? Are you going to engage in conversation on past games? You enjoy the blog section, that's great, so don't minimize the forum sidebar along with all the sidebars you should already have minimized when trying to avoid spoilers.
FYI: People keep citing ESPN with the intention of affording clarity to others that "other sports do it". The point that we should be making regarding ESPN is that there are so many MORE people that WANT the results upfront, that they can dedicate entire CHANNELS to bringing the results to the masses.
On your last point about our justifications, you've got the wrong impression on what courtesy actually is. It's discourteous to think that 5,000 cars should stop and park on the shoulder of a highway so that YOU can get home quickly. As all the TL news are spoiler free, TL have decided to be spoiler-free and therefor the forum should be it aswell. If TL would post all the winners in the news section then I feel like the page itself is saying: We are not going to post matchresult in the news section: Notice how all the news are titled: Interview with Blizzard cup finalist. They dont say: Interview with DRG and MMA, the blizzcon finalists.
That's why I feel that the forum should be as spoiler free as possible. I'm hiding the Fan clubs cause I know that people will write in them after an event, if I see that the MMA fanclub is active then I know that he most likely won.
TL DR; I feel like the forum should be as spoiler free as possible because TL themself are not giving away spoilers in the news so they want people to use the webpage even though an event is going on / is completed.

The races are mixed up on the list. Actually everybody plays terran except for MC, Fruitdealer and Nestea.
And I can't believe Fruitdealer and Rainbow are on that list. Those beta tournaments must have paid lots of money.

Your problem Joe, is that you don't understand why it's like the way it is right now. Originally, there was no rule against it. The foreign BW scene was small, and chalk-full of eccentric members who complained enough, and eventually got a few pro-spoiler alert people into admin positions @ tl.net, and that's why it became the way it is now. The problem though, is that they're using that model and fitting it to the new SC2 focused tl.net that's infused with a lot more people who DON'T want spoiler tags. It's like forcing kids in today's society to be in a school with a 1940's curriculum/attitude/model.
|
To the people saying spoilers are fine:
1. Paid VODs are a significant part of SC2, SC2 is also a global game so you cannot expect even the majority of viewers to watch it live. These two factors make any comparisons to NFL etc invalid.
2. We can have both. People aren't asking you not to post news, they are asking you to put a spoiler tag and avoid spoiling in the title. If you did this we'd have news and people could remain unspoiled, everyone wins.

During the Olympics, ESPN analysts, along with those from other sports networks, will make a statement saying "If you don't want the results spoiled, turn the channel for a few minutes RIGHT NOW" before showing scores, they dont just go ahead and start posting results without warning. So yeah, ESPN avoids spoilers unless its for the four major sports (football, basketball, hockey, baseball) because most people wont be in a weird timezone when the game is on, and most people wont bother recording an NFL or NHL game so they can watch it later.
Its cool that MMA broke the 100k club in what may have been the best SC2 series played to date.

Well what I feel is:
Either you make TL Spoiler free by having it spoiler free or you post all the results in all the news and forum threads. The problem then is that TL would look like reddit. "MMA WON Blizzcon invitational", EPIC FINAL that MMA WON, DISCUSS IT HERE
Another thing you could do is that when you make a thread you select if it contains spoilers. If you select that it contains spoilers then people who have selected not to see "spoiler threads" can't see your thread. I have no idea if it's hard or not to implement this feature but I think it would solve it. A lot of people, including myself browse through TL at work / school or w/e, they check TL at times when they can't view the VoDs.
And yes I understand what you are saying and I agree but I feel that it can't be midway. Sometimes there's spoilers but most likely you will be safe so that's what I feel. Normally you dont get spoiled at TL and that is why it sucks when you do.
I personally have a GOMTV subscribtion and all I do is watch the Vods. Often the same day and it sucks when you know the result beforehand
|
I find this spoiler fear ridiculous. TL is a news + community page at the same time. Do you go to a soccer news site expecting them to not show the latest results? So they should cover up their whole page or not update at all so people who are looking for the latest news have to look really hard to find it?
Is it so difficult to just avoid TL and go straight to gomtv to just watch the freaking set? I find this whole uproar about this a joke.
|
I'm sure MVP has won more than MC/Nestea. If i'm not wrong, this earnings only are earnings based off GSL tournaments?
|
If you havn't watched the latest games and don't want to be 'spoiled' it's incumbent upon you to avoid sites that discuss them. People on here have a right to discuss the latest games without having people who think the world revolves around them shushing them up because they're lazy and havn't watched the games. I don't think I've ever seen another sports website in the world that tells people they need to spoiler discussion of the latest games to protect a minority who want to browse the site and havn't got around to it yet, it's ridiculous.

Check the news, do they announce spoilers in the headline? No, they dont. TL have decided to keep it spoiler free. The easiest thing is just to avoid all spoilers in the headlines. Sometimes you see spoilers written by people but if I for instance browse through the Sc2 General forum I dont want to get spoiled, if I read through threads that can contain info about a recent tournament win then I'm atleast aware of the possiblity of spoilers
Again, the best way would just to have a feature that allows people to select if the thread that they are making contains spoilers.
Then people have an option to hide all the threads that people have selected as "SPOILER CONTAINING"
Then the people who like to browse through the forum without spoilers can select that they dont want show threads that contains spoilers. Then when they have watched the final then they can unselect this feature and happily discuss the recent event winner or w/e

Some people might be at work / school, a place were they can't watch it but they have some down-time to just browse through the internet. Also TL themself are trying to avoid spoiling result, they are saying that we're not going to spoil results for you. Therefor you might expect the whole page to be like that. Now i don't know what news site you refer to. I'm going to talk about football sites for example. Just go to soccernet, com, you see the latest results splashed all over the front page with big images. I sure as hell don't see all their headlines containing 0 spoilers.
This is ridiculous because everybody has their own catch-up rate to catch the vods. So what if this guy takes 3 days to watch the vods, do we continue to spoiler everything for him? Do we continue to make it seem like an entitlement to these people when honestly imo, it should be more of a privilege. Perhaps there should be a cut-off time, or like you said, the spoilers option. However, all these are really added administrative hassles which can be avoided if this community was not so anal about spoilers all the time.

I'm talking about TL deciding not to have spoilers in their news headlines. Therefor the people behind TL have decided that we are not going to spoil the recent results for you. Also TL have been a spoiler free enviroment and my problem is that TL have decided to not have spoilers but sometimes, not all the time, you get spoiled. So it's midwayish.
You dont get most of the recent result spoiled but 1/10 times (just a random estimation) you do and I find that a bit odd, if TL would gladly have spoilers in their headlines and post news like : "MMA won blizzard cup 2011" then people know that you should not visit TL cause they are posting all the results in the headlines but now TL is hiding spoilers and most of the community members are too, but 1/10 times (just a random estimation) you get spoiled from threads like this one.
And to answer your question about time then as you may know, the TL webpage does not post the result in the headlines and most of the forum threads do the same. This thread could be named:
The $100,000 GSL Tour Prize Income Club and it would all be fine. If people clicked and read the thread they could have said in the start. This thread may or may not contain recent GSL spoilers.
And about the time issue, it would get solved if you do it like this cause then people visit certain forum threads knowing that it can contain spoilers

Yes, it is very unclear as TL is not spoiling in the news so I feel that the norm is not to spoil but there is no clear rule regarding the issue so it would be awesome if you brought that up!
Also you can rename the headline to : The $100,000 GSL Tour Prize Income Club and it would solve most of the problem. It is a small change that matters so much for some people, including myself sometimes!

To people saying "Don't visit an SC2 News Site": TeamLiquid is more than a news site. It is a community of people who discuss the game itself. Not just recent results. This is NOT the news section of the forums, so I don't see why news should be posted here. If that is your argument, then people should not post their own news at all, and rely on the admins of TL to post it. If you do want other people to post news: it's not that hard to put a [Spoiler] in the title of the thread and make it ambiguous.
All of this discussion could have been avoided if the title was something a little less obvious, ie: [Spoiler] Update on financial standings of GSL Participants.

This one is a major spoiler and should not be a thread title. It's not, except if you knew by heart that getting second place would not have been enough to get MMA over the 100k mark. And in that case, you're probably hardcore enough to have watched the game in the first place. :p
Looking over the thread the ratio seems to be about 2 spoiler complainers to 8 complainers about spoiler complainers. And I'm with the latter. Don't go to a SC2 news site if you are afraid of getting spoiled.

I agree that results should not be arbitrarily spoiled. And what was even the point of the thread in the first place? Many people who are interested will look at sc2earnings and check on their favorites.
But to the people who got spoiled, it's not that hard to train yourself to stay away. TL is my homepage, but when there's a major tournament, I know I run the risk of spoiling myself, whether it be my own curiosity, a fan club that's getting bumped, or seeing a thread like this pop up. Advice from a famed wizard: "Keep it secret. Keep it safe."

Glad I found this after I watched the games ^_^ I can't believe MVP is 3rd, hasn't he won the most? O_o?

EDIT: Nvm title change actually does help....
|
You almost had a point there, almost.
Let's start with the fact that teamliquid.net consistently reports everything LATE to begin with. Which means if you actually want the results of a tourney that finished 30 seconds ago, or 3 days ago, you go to an LR/results thread, located in your second link.
Then, let's look at what your second link actually is, which is supposed to make us all look like idiots. Oh, hey, it's the Starcraft 2 forum. A place where it so happens that you're guaranteed, yes I can say that confidently, guaranteed, to run into topics regarding Starcraft 2. If you're not looking to get spoiled regarding Starcraft 2 events during your 15 minute work break while you browse the Diablo 3 forum, you're the person that shouldn't be here.

Thank you for the title change!

lol, the title is finally ambiguous after several hours of raging.
Also, this article wasn't too newsworthy after reflection. I guess it just hypes MMA up more success wise.

it's not really THAT ambiguous if you know who's won GSL in the past and know a little math :x

The title of the thread should have been more ambiguous. If that concept is too difficult for you to grasp, you shouldn't be making news threads here to begin with.
Why should it have been more ambiguous? The thread is about MMA's prize money, the title should reflect that.
This type of stuff is definitely hurting esports.

Don't go on TL if you don't want spoilers... forums are made for discussion. Why can't we discuss some matches that happened recently because some people haven't seen it yet? Do you happen to have the read the forum rules of the site you are posting on atm? As long as the rules are in people have the right to complain about it.

There is also a rule about being off topic.
More than 50% of the posts in this thread are off-topic, it could be considered that it deserves to be closed because people can't control their urge to cry about spoilers.

Really MODS? if you're going to protect the precious egg's, your thread title now is a spoiler.. it's pretty obvious DRG isn't who this thread is about.. given MMA has won... before.. ugh.. why do I bother... back to neogaf...

$100K a year is a dec living.

fuck the guys complaining about spoilers, if you wanted to watch the whole series that bad, then why would you go on teamliquid???
dumb fucks
User was warned for this post

Actually on topic:
I didn't realise how much more prize money was given for the first 3 seasons of GSL compared to the 2011 Code S seasons.
85k USD for first place in open seasons vs 45k USD for the Code S.
So I guess fruitdealer's 2 good tournament placings are enough to put him in the 100k club because they were in 2010.

Only 1 USA player in top 10 earnings....

On December 18 2011 15:21 mrKamiya wrote: Only 1 USA player in top 10 earnings.... they're all korean?
BTW, the title is still a spoiler, the only possible addition to the 100,000 gsl earning club is MMA (if he won). Since even if DRG had won, he would still not make it into the 100,000. CHANGE IT PLSSSS!!!!!

If you care so much about spoilers why the hell did you come to arguably one of the biggest news sites on starcraft? Of course there is going to be a few un-spoilered titles after such an amazing finals, if you can that much just dont come here until you have watched the vod lol...

MC and NesTea both won in the open seasons, which was a much bigger prize than the regular seasons

Damn ESPN spoiling the Dallas game for me.
But really, I do like to read how the games went, and watch them if I get a chance. I don't visit TL if I really do not want to know the outcome of the games.

Why the hell are people complaining about seeing results of a major event on a major sc2 news site? MAKES NO SENSE. GET OFF THE SITE if you don't want to see discussion about it.
Very cool to see, didn't realize FD had made so much... I guess the first GSL got him a lot.... nice thread
PS: an approximation shouldn't be exact

No, I mean in overall sc2 earnings.

Ugh why the title change? So fucking unnecessary.

Lol. This title sort of spoils too xD
but I guess it's hard to give it a title that is ambiguous and still be able to give you an idea of what the topic is about
Edit: nvm i see that the $ sign is cut off in the preview, so no problem

I honestly don't see the point of calling this a spoiler. If you plan on watching a recent series you don't surf around on TL/Reddit until you've seen it. It's just common sense.

Sick Nestea making like 250,000 bucks in a year. He should use that money and go into poker, with some dedication, he'll soon find himself being a multi million dollar guy.
