======== original post ======== Hello, TL.
Just sharing some tweaks I did with variables.txt for SC2. It makes the game look cleaner but not as ugly as low graphics settings.
The game has a really clean Low graphics settings which suddenly get clutterd at Medium to Extreme. The thing is you cant get to these settings by just going to the in-game options menu and customizing stuff. You have to play around with your variables.txt to get any setting from Med-Extreme as clean as Low,
Its a hybrid of Low and Extreme if you will, IMO it takes the best of both worlds. Plus it needs about the same performance as Medium Settings, so if you have a good card your frame rates should be really high with these.
Just backup/rename your "variables.txt" in your "\Documents\StarCraft II" folder and replace it with this. If you don't like it, just restore your old one.
1. My Settings + Show Spoiler +These settings gets 40-50FPS on my PC with AMD Phenom-II 1090T CPU and HD 4290 Graphics.

"foliagedensity", "particleobjects" and "particleterrain"can also be tweaked for performance and clarity. Values are from 0.0 to 1.0, I have tested values 0.2, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0. 6. "foliagequality", "treadlod", "particlelod" and "ribbonlod" can be tweaked with values 0, 1, 2 and 3. (Higher-better looking, Lower-faster) 7. "height" and "width" controls full screen resolution, do not change to something your monitor cant handle. 8. "gamma" controlls full screen gamma only, SC2 will use desktop gamma in windowed mode
Will add more when I find/remember them
I use the lowest resolution and some settings like mouse speed are personalized, so just change it in-game when needed. You can change texture resolution in-game but if you try to select any of the Blizzard made profiles (Low-Extreme) you go back to the Blizzard made settings.
And, this is not a hack, "variables.txt" is just a text file where your settings are saved. This wont get you banned.
Note: If you delete the .txt, SC2 will auto-generate it.

Maybe any pictures or compare it to the other graphics?

Screenshot comparisions would be nice, good job:O

Stealing as soon as I get home! I don't know why my graphics always look too dark, not detailed enough, too cluttered, etc. No matter how much I tweak, they're just difficult to play with.
|
I wish my 11th post was as helpful as this! Thanks!
|
Agreed, this requires pics for comparison. I'll try it for sure, but it'll be a while before I get the opportunity.
|
Pics would be awesome... then I might steal it.
|
Might give this a shot, my fps always struggles when I try to steam, maybe this will smooth it out a bit

This sounds like it could be really interesting, but a few before/after pictures would be nice

I tried this out, but I wasn't a huge fan of it. It made the game look much darker, which is the exact opposite of what I wanted =( I think I'm going to stick to low plus the "Stronger Team Colors" mod. Now that mod really makes a difference, especially with Alt+F mode.

Shadows added, improved texture resolution, what else?

It's low settings with a bunch of random stuff set to ultra, a lot of which eat CPU. In an incredibly CPU bound game these settings are just silly
|

My computer doesn't like it. I can usually run high/ultra without any lagging or stuttering, but changing it to this has introduced random stutters. It definitely looks good, but nothing really drastically improved.
|
imo best way to play the game is with everything set to lowest possible. many pro gamers use this setting because it's easiest on the eyes to distinguish all the units and everything looks clearer.
simplifiedCloaking=0 simplifiedShaders=0
set those 2 settings in the variables text and you get this major improvement on forcefields as they are kinda hard to see on lowest shaders

Im pretty sure this messes up cloaking somehow (for allied units?)
I didnt enable it because of something someone pointed out that it also changed

i have used this setting since beta and i dont notice any problems with cloaked units. i duno about that, but as a toss player and you play on low shaders, you really need to use this setting

I agree FF is to clear on stock lowest. Does anyone know how well these settings will run on a GT220? I would try it myself but I need to reassemble my computer first.

I wish we could just adjust gamma while playing window mode .

It feels very good, i'll use it.

Anybody know a good way to make cloaked units easily visible on low graphics settings? I use low with all settings, but I have trouble seeing where cloaked units are.
|
Okay, I'll tweak it some more:
1. I'll turn off simplified shaders to fix Forcefields and Cloak 2. I'll lower the CPU intensive stuff. 3. If things are too dark, you can tweak gamma settings in-game
BTW, my setup is im on an AMD890GX Mobo with onboard HD4290 graphics and a Phenom2 1090T. So my pc is kind of strong on the CPU side but weak on the graphics.

Yeah, but it actually makes your own cloaked units more easily visible, especially observer.
|
Is there option to enable, to let me see enemy cloacked units better? i play on lowest settings, and i can hardly see observer riple(i notice it only if know observer is there.). i putted on simplifiedCloaking=0 simplifiedShaders=0 hardly changed a thing.
|
Haha, just though of something. If I were to set my settings to ultra, which means that I am overstraining my cpu and all my other hardware, does that mean the AI becomes weaker? ^^"
|
Wow this is great. I always wanted to have real shadows but with the less cluttered look of low. Only problem is my comp seems to like do some odd FPS spikes every once in a while which its never done on any other setting before. I think it's getting kind of confused...
|
@Danny J, next time that happens, post here exactly what you were doing or take a screen shot of where specifically it happens.
It might have to do with watter effects or fog effects somewhere in the map. Lets try to tweak it from there. What's your setup BTW?
|
Is there something like this that can make the graphics "lower" in that my laptop won't lag as much during high food battles?
|
Looks VERY neat! Thanks :D
|
|
Still think it's better to explain what each options on the variables do... Granted that Blizz really simplified that txt file but there are still some dark lines as i'm unaware of what they exactly do. But yeah the guy on the 1st page nailed it pretty much everything you need to know : set everything on low except simplifiedcloaking/shader on 0. You get what most pros uses (or so i think)

3. If you think it's too dark, you can tweak gamma settings in-game
You can only do this in Fullscreened Mode T_T
|
^ Hmm.. I not very sure, but I think you can set the gamma of your actual desktop via driver settings. In windowed mode, SC2 probably adopts the gamma of your desktop -or- in fullscreen mode, SC2 actually overrides the driver gamma settings.
I remember back when I had those old Gefrorce 7800 AGPs, you could set profiles per executable. I particularly remember having The Chronicles of Riddick automatically run with gamma settings pretty low (Oh how I loved shadows in that game). I haven't tried this with my Radeon now though.

Just making sure since blizzard don't like cfg changes that can't be made in-game, is this 100% safe to do?
|
On November 28 2011 19:20 Chamie wrote: Just making sure since blizzard don't like cfg changes that can't be made in-game, is this 100% safe to do?
Yes, all of these settings can be changed safely. Half of them you can change in-game anyways. It's pure graphics settings that you're changing - nothing more, nothing less.
|
On November 28 2011 19:20 Chamie wrote: Just making sure since blizzard don't like cfg changes that can't be made in-game, is this 100% safe to do? It's the Blizzard config text file, of course it's safe to do...if you're familiar it's the exact same as modifying the config.wtf in WoW. You're just using options that Blizzard integrated into the game, there's just no UI for it because these settings are for advanced users and 99% of people would never change them
|
Yes, its very safe, you can play around with it.
The only setting that is marginally unsafe is the "height" and "width" settings. They control in-game resolution, and if you set to something your monitor cant handle, you wont see the game at all.
Other settings, if you set them to high, all you will get is lag.
Make sure to make a copy your old variables.txt so you can go back to old settings if needed.

I think this should be the actual OP, the point of playing on low graphics is to minimize clutter and in that regard it does wonderfully, the only issue people generally have is with forcefields and other effects that are difficult to see on low, and the above settings fix this nicely.
|
Okay, I will add this point to the OP.
But my original point is that between Low and Medium, there is no gradient of how much the game takes details away.
In terms of clutter, its like:
Low - 5% Medium - 75% High - 80% Ultra - 90% Extreme - 92%
You have to tweak around if you want something around 20% -ish
|

Make sure to make a copy your old variables.txt so you can go back to old settings if needed. Only get a backup if you modified a LOT of things from default. Otherwise when you delete that file blizz will create you a new one with everything on Default settings. Dunno about you but i got less lag by deleting that file. Then putting my setting like before and it was lagging slighty less. Dunno why, but could help.

forcefield is the biggest change. I upgraded my comp b/c I couldn't see the forcefields.

Thanks for the feedback, I have updated the OP. Hopefully its more useful.

How about a version that is heavier on the GPU and lighter on the CPU? Most of my problems are CPU bound.
|
On December 05 2011 14:53 Zombo Joe wrote: How about a version that is heavier on the GPU and lighter on the CPU? Most of my problems are CPU bound.
That is already what you got. You can't lower the CPU heavy things other than putting things on, as sc2 even on low settings wants all the CPU power it can get. 2-3 armies of 200 supply on the screen will be heavy no matter settings.
|
Hello, Zombo.
What are your pc specs? One way to cut CPU utilization is to turn off physics completely in-game.
|
Having just built a computer that can run ultra settings I am happy to just play on the low settings I am used to, along side with the beautiful FF and cloak tweaks I can now use. As for the shadows on 1920, they appear to be a bit too awkward for me, I will continue to tweak them until I find something I enjoy.
Thanks for sharing your findings sir.
Edit: I don't know how to spell.
|
Hmm... I copied your variables.txt and noticed a problem. Small stutters every now and then, as if running on a really slow hdd, "pausing/lagging" for 0,5sec or so. It can't be hardware related as I'm running on a beast of a machine.
edit: it suddenly went away, so nevermind.
|
when going 100% low graphics, if the darkened image is a problem, changing hdr 0 to hdr 1
will flush the scene with more accurate brightness/lighting with almost no impact on frames per second. I don't recommend upping the gamma, since you will also be brightening areas that are already bright enough.
While on 100% low graphics, if you have trouble seeing speed banglings with a medium sized cluster of speedlings, like having trouble finding the bangs inside speedlings while they are moving towards you and you have healthbars on at all times, in order to know if you should split marines or put down FF, then turning on the hdr will also fix this. Banglings will stand out more by having a stronger green color on their buts. Turning on HDR will also let you know when roaches have tunneling claws, since the spikes on the back of roaches will now glow blue; as if you had higher graphics turned on.
So, the only settings that provide any real benefit in my opinion for users who want to use low graphics, are the following;
simplifiedCloaking=0 simplifiedShaders=0 hdr 1
|
nice tweaks but is there any way to get warpin with the unit outlines? right now a warping stalker looks exactly like a zealot.

Please try to set:
lowqualitymodels=0

Dear Don,
is there a way to increase my FPS even if I don't want to get better graphics? My compouter is very crappy so I'm aiming for more FPS rather than having good looking graphics. Of course I'm playing on everything low except Textures on High because somone told me that you can see cloaked units better.
So is there a maximus-fps setting?
Thank you very much.
SeLpHy
Btw: Why is my mouse so fast? :O

Go into you graphics driver panel and set everything to "performance"? 1024x768 resolution? I don't know what else can give you FPS other than setting everything to low.
|

Btw: Why is my mouse so fast? :O 1) there's a way to completely disable shadows, which causes a giant fps increase, but i recently reformatted so i lost the config for it and need to figure out how to do it again
2) your mouse will appear to be moving faster on low resolutions. if you set your video card not to upscale lower resolutions, your mouse would be moving the same speed in a really tiny window

Meh, I tried tweaking Variables.txt to get rid of non-blob shadow to keep my FPS consistent, but it didn't work out. Putting shadow on really decreases FPS. Currently, I'm happy with my settings below which didn't decrease FPS at all:

So I can run SC2 on High with 70+ FPS but since it's easier to look at I've been playing with all low except effects on ultra (TLO and Huk use these). Anyone know Sase's graphic settings? They look quite well

@Flaiker I'll try to watching Sase's stream maybe we could figure it out Or watch a vod For me it looks like all low except effects, textures and modells on high, not sure though. One problem I have, if I want the seeable forcefields you have to add simplifiedCloaking=0 simplifiedShaders=0 But that also changes how the nexus looks and the pylon power radius colour and building grid. But I guess theres no way around that

hey i was just watching the nastl, rgn vs fxo and the ingame settings nasl uses is so crystal clear and crisp. Any idea on what settings to tweak in order to achieve the same ingame settings?

I wish to continue using these settings, but my variables keeps getting reset when starting game. Is there a line of incompatible code in these variables?
