I noticed there was a Japanese player at ESWC this weekend named Nemuke and I found he had a twitter account. He qualified through national qualifiers and plays terran. He wrote a bunch of tweets about his experience and impressions of other players he met. I thought they were pretty interesting so I thought I would translate some of them.
"ESCW felt like a cultural exchange and my point of view was different from Japanese events. The players are probably used to it. I thought it would be a more serious, heavy atmosphere but it was surprisingly serene and there were many calm players. It felt like everyone was together having fun with sports."
"I got back from dinner. The portions of French cuisine are so big I was surprised. I understand why Europeans are fat."
"Today I played ClouD and Lalush and went 0-2 to both of them. With that my ESWC results are that I didn't take a game and went 0-10. It's a result that leaves me with some regrets. However, without feeling too down about the results, I'm looking forward to tomorrow and want to watch some high-level play at the tournament and learn."
"I'll write a little about my impressions of the European players I faced. IdrA, although famous on the net for being BM, isn't like that in real life. Lol. He seemed like a very calm person. His mood was surprisingly similar to breek. His body was impressive and it felt like he fit into the competition area very naturally."
"Cloud. Outwarded he seemed somewhat stern lol. He responded to interviewers very politely. This may be part of the European community, but everyone basically seemed friendly. If I invited someone to games, they would play with me plenty."
"The Swede Lalush. Btw, you read it Raruushu (T/N: I guess Japanese people didn't know how to say his name previously?) I only knew him from replays where after he lost he would say quite rude things lol. Actually his manner of speech and behavior was laid-back and he was very calm. His honestly was quite surprising lol."
"It seems afterall seeing someone in real life and reading what they write on the net or in replays is entirely different. E-sports players have sportsmanship. That is to say, they are essentially friendly and are careful about relationships at the tournament. More than anything, compared to the way I do things it is very positive."
I think many people bm behind the safety of their monitors, but are too afraid to do it at a LAN. It's a good thing though, we wouldn't want anything like that in live events.

It's because on Japan, they don't have the L sound, like Korean, so the L sound to them is a little bit wierd xD. For example, My Japanese teacher calls me rauru... and my name is Raul.

The reason it's written like that is that the Japanese equivalent of the alphabet does not have certain sounds in it. The sound used to pronounce L is one of them, so to write Lalush they have to use characters which create an R sound as a substitute. Similarly, my name (Timothy) is hard to write in Japanese because the "Ti" and "thy" aren't represented in the Japanese alphabet. The closest to my name is to "Teimoshii" (from memory, it's been a long time since I've had to write my name in Japanese, 6 years since High school to be exact).
This applies to the writing more so than speaking though. While the Japanese accent can struggle with L's etc at first, with practice the actual verbal pronunciation of Western names etc is fine.

Starting on Wednesday January 4th 2012 at 20:00 GMT (+00:00) until late night January 9th!, we'll be playing through over 100 games as quickly as possible while raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation, which focuses on research and education for preventable cancers.
That's right, more than 100 games. We're not cheating by picking 100 short games either. We've got Final Fantasy VII, Ocarina of Time (MST) and Earthbound. We have Mario, Sonic and Samus, we've got Half-Life, Portal & Demon's Souls and classics like Contra, Metal Slug & CastleVania. Hell we got just about everything. We even have a whole section dedicated to awful games, so if you're a fan of Bubsy 3D, Lagoon or Trio the Punch we got something for you too! Check out the Marathon Schedule over on the SDA marathon page for a complete list of games and a time schedule that may well end up being accurate.
But what's special about this marathon? Well the main part is that it is being run by SDA, the premiere Speed Running Website on the internet that people in the know head to when they want to find high quality, confirmed legitimate speedruns for games. SDA, like TL, have a top-notch community and a very high standard for posted runs. We've got runners with world records and people who can destroy games that most people struggle with. The stream runs all day and all night, delivering non-stop speed running action.
On top of that, Awesome Games Done Quick offers a fantastic commentary stream to go alongside the gaming action with a lot of chat interaction. With donation incentives like naming characters, requesting challenges and getting people to dance like an idiot celebrate like a boss and a whole load of incredible prizes, from hand-made plushies, pixel art perlers and a load of games, collectibles and so on there's plenty of reasons to watch the marathon. Check out the second post to find out how you can make an impact on the Marathon with our donation campaign: Name Tifa ESPORTS!
So why am I telling you guys this? Well, as you may know I travelled to the last one (that's me dancing for TL) and there was no way I was going to miss going again. I'm flying from London to DC just to take part in this and we, especially me, need your support! Tune in to the marathon and maybe make a few donations and tell your friends. I will be playing Bayonetta on Saturday Friday, Jan 07 7:20am GMT (GMT+00:00) (sorry europe =( ) so please tune in and do some shout outs for TL.net!
Other TL members will be there running games too: Heidman is running Double Dragon 2, Contra, Super C (Contra 2) AND Super Punch Out. Heidman is a monster at these games and they will all be worth checking out. His Super C run from last year (bookmarked at a highlight moment!) can be found on YouTube here. Also, super best friend Tri-Hex will be doing a live Yoshi's Island 100% on Wednesday, Jan 05 11:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00) which is guaranteed to be incredible for those who have and haven't played the game. He's gained a small following on our forums so I hope to see some TL people hanging out there too! We've also got a bunch of TL people who will be at the marathon but won't be running games so come join in and give TL a big presence!
I'd just like to take this oppurtunity to thank everyone from TL who donated and watched last year. There were a lot of you making shoutouts and joining chat and we really felt it. It was awesome to see so many of you guys chipping in and you really made a noticible impact on the viewer numbers and donation totals so thank you all.
I'd also like to thank TL.net for giving me permission to promote this event =D.

Each year, AGDQ has lots of donation drives for various challenges, naming characters and pulling off certain tricks. In the AGDQ`11 thread, Jibba mentioned grouping up to name a Chrono Trigger character which is a great idea for TL but it never really got off the ground. I loved the idea so this year I want to group TL together under the banner of ESPORTS. Now ESPORTS fans don't pull punches and neither does Team Liquid, so that's why I propose we go after naming Tifa from Final Fantasy VII, ESPORTS. Now you're probably thinking "Why Tifa?, Why FFVII?" that sort of thing so let me explain.
Final Fantasy VII is not only the longest run at the marathon, but will also have some of the fiercest donation competition. I can almost guarantee that Cloud will have someone drop a whole load of money on for a name. Last year we had a single $1000 donation for Chrono in Chrono Trigger and FFVII is even more famous than that. So why not go after Cloud? Well, let me explain.
Cloud is a fucking pussy.
He's a whiny loser and is only really used in the run because you have to use him. The main team for the run is Cloud, Tifa and Cait Sith. Tifa is incredibly strong, incredibly important and also, the sexiest character in the party (sorry Cait). Now lets think about who we want flying our banner of ESPORTS. Do we want whiny loser kid who is only there because he has to be, fluffy toy thing with a cat that isn't there for most of the start of the game, or Tifa, who is not only a key part of the squad for the whole game (she gets the most screentime in the run) but also the most powerful squad member? I think it's clear! We can get a good 8 hours of spreading ESPORTS through the stream. Also it means we can make bad jokes like "I'm donating for ESPORTS" or "you're killing ESPORTS".
Simply put, Tifa gets the most screentime, is the most powerful and the most sexy character. A perfect fit for TL and ESPORTS.
Now obviously you don't have to donate for this if you don't want to, it's cool. If you want to donate for a challenge or for another game, go right ahead! If you don't want to donate or can't, that's fine too! I think with a nice group effort like this, the TL community can really make their mark on the marathon. If you want to donate to name Tifa ESPORTS, all you have to do is tune in while watching the marathon, then click the chipin page. Once you've sent in your money by whatever means you want, just leave a chipin comment saying that your money is towards naming Tifa ESPORTS! You can also shoutout to TL, your dog, house or anything you want there. There might be a start point for donations, so if you're unsure if they've started yet, just ask in chat!
I look forward to seeing ESPORTS deathblowing all sorts of shit in FFVII land.

Was looking around a few days ago for more information about the japanese community and I found a community site: http://starcraft2.jpcommunity.com/sc2/ Seems like they have barcraft there too, which is kinda cool

hahahaha Euros are fat and IdrA has a great body? Love this guy.
No but seriously, it's great to learn a bit more about another SC2 community. We really don't hear much about Asian SC2 aside from TW and KR. Following him on Twitter now.
Why do people do this? Are you trying to show off your knowledge of a foreign language on an english SC message board? I mean, I can at least understand those who slip in a "As a masters league player..." because, as pompous as it is, relates to SC2 but this kind of thing just boggles my mind.
Do you see people saying ciekawy when there's a thread about Mana or Tarson? Or maybe 흥미있는 in any thread about a Korean player? What's more, you didn't even use the kanji which actually makes you look pretty novice.

wow man relax, did it really made you so angry you had to type all this?
I think the pronunciation part regarding Lalush relates to the character "Lelouch" from the super awesome anime Code Geass. Since people in the west pronounce it "lah luh sh" or "leh luh sh," he instead suggests "rah ruu sh" which would make pronouncing Lalush's name exactly the same as "Lelouch."
Anyways, hurray, more evidence/support for my belief that Idra BMs on purpose (as in, has a fake persona, AKA best troll ever?)

I don't understand how you interpreted it as him having trouble, he does not say that directly nor hint towards that. If anything, it's people in general who have trouble, therefore him telling how to pronounce it.
everybody rages sometimes in front of the computer. Doesnt mean you are the same when you are around other people.
concerning the fat thing. I think I read somewhere that Japan was amongst the countries with the best overall BMI index in the world and in general the food they serve is much less heavy on calories.
Just read the title, 'Japanese Player Nemuke'. His name also just happens to spell out nuke'em. Not sure what to make of that but I shamefully admit I loled.

protip: he's not the same guy you were giving shit earlier.
I actually met this guy in Paris, he was waiting with us for the ESWC party sunday evening and I had a nice little chat/interview with him and his manager. I'll try to get it all down in writing and post the interview.
It is unfortunate that Japan's pro-gaming scene is not larger. The Japanese gaming scene is console-based, and it is hard for many casual gamers to switch from console to PC gaming.
Nevertheless, I feel that there is a huge potential market in Japan for esports, since there is already significant interest in gaming in the culture, a developed economy capable of financially supporting a scene, and high population density that encourages gaming and tournament attendence.
Perhaps what Japan needs is one of their own to attain success in the SC2 scene. National pride is still very powerful in East Asia, and I feel that if there were more, say Chinese or Japanese players, more Chinese and Japanese people may follow the scene, simply to follow their country's representative at first, but will gradually become a part of the community.

Europeans being hurt at being called fat after calling Americans fat all their lives
1 some guy feeling hurt at a guy who seems to be from Japan typing in Japanese and doesn't realise anything when another Japanese corrects his knowldege in Japanese.
We/Japanese look really thin/slender/small (depending on your preference) in comparison. And I have to say:
In all honesty, I agree with him you all do look fat hahahahaha :D

Japanese have problems with R and L. Basically its spelled the same ^^ Here is a example ;P
Also Nemuke would be terrified if he went to MLG ^^

You do realize on average "Europeans" are 'fatter' than the Japanese, so not only what he said is correct, but you've totally taken it in a weird way. It wasn't meant as a mean spirited thing.
Japan is 3.2% obese, Sweden is 9.7%, Netherlands 10%, France 9.4%, UK23% etc

You do realize on average "Europeans" are 'fatter' than the Japanese, so not only what he said is correct, but you've totally taken it in a weird way. It wasn't meant as a mean spirited thing.

Good job in calling him stupid when your own link supports his argument.
by the same logic i could go to kuwait and say "gee, asians are really fat"

Nice try but no. You are going a specific spot to valid your argument which is simply cheating + your argument is still false. Your own link is killing your argument here since it simply disagrees if you do stuff like that. Japanese people are simply less fat by average then Europeans, its just a fact...
people of collective cultures are not hesitant to assign labels like fat, or stupid. they would describe themselves as such if it were true as well, it is just a cultural thing--they don't take as many steps as people of individualistic cultures to constantly maintain extremely high self esteem via creating grandiose self-images.
also people in japan are extremely fit compared to the rest of the world, as their diet contains much more fish as opposed to red meat compared to just about every other industrialized nation

i did not know that! thank you for learning me something new ^^
This isn't really a thread about whether Europeans are fat or not but I figured I'd throw this in here just in case.
Having lived in Japan for 2 years, and with a Japanese wife, the Japanese tend to* use the word overweight / fat a lot more and with a lot less discretion than we do. Here it's basically a death sin to call someone overweight, whereas in Japan I frequently (...) saw conversations like "Hey you've gotten a little fat, eh?" - "Yeah, I gotta do something about that". My wife's mother kept talking about me being fat (I definitely am not - 65 kgs, 184 cms), and only later did I find out that she said it in a "it's good that you've put on some weight" manner, rather than "you should lose weight bubba!". Somewhat outside the point but still, how many westerners would say "your belly's sticking out" to someone, and not even being negative about it.
My wife constantly bugs my friend who's a bit on the "fluffy" side, and HIS girlfriend (we became friends in Japan) bugged him about it as well, constantly. I could give many more examples but I'll just stop there.
On topic: awesome! I've been looking so hard for Japanese SC2 players but it's been a desert. Maybe it's grown a bit since I was looking the last time. We're planning on moving back at some point and I'd hate to be the only person in the country who plays the damn game.
(* disclaimer: generalizing, based on experience I've had with the Japanese I've seen or met or heard of)
There are a surprising number of Japanese Starcraft 2 fans. Like most of the foreign scene, they are largely ex-Brood War players that have picked up Starcraft 2. It's slowly gaining popularity there, although not to a huge degree.
It's like the nerdier version of the Hallyu Wave, which is the term used for Korean Pop/Drama/Movies taking over a lot of the Eastern Asian entertainment scene.

damn the word,Hallyu wave is the most lame and retarded word we koreans made .. anyways, good info
The sc2 scene in Japan isn't big because they don't even have a localised version of it, they have to play import american copies. Also not many people own pc's in their home, as everything they ever need to do can be done from their phones. I read something like only 10% of digital photos taken in Japan ever actually make it onto a pc. A lot of Japanese people are aware of starcraft though, because of the their close proximity to korea, but not many that I've ever met have first hand experience with it.
Also the fat thing.. Japanese people use it liberally, they don't even sugar coat it with each other. It's really funny to overhear. They don't mean "like a hippo" they use it for even little increments of weight gained. Oh and the guy warned for typing in Japanese.. was from Japan. He wasn't showing off, and no you don't often see that word written in Kanji.
Hopefully blizzard will maybe do a localisation for HOTS, and get more people playing it, apparently the reason they don't is because every game they've released in Japan has been a failure, and I've also heard the translation of sc1 was pretty awful.

It's because on Japan, they don't have the L sound, like Korean, so the L sound to them is a little bit wierd xD. For example, My Japanese teacher calls me rauru... and my name is Raul.
That is something that I never quite understood completely. I heard that East Asians can't pronounce L and use R instead but then sometimes it seems like it is the other way around. For example at IPL some caster said that he was told to say "Lyung" instead of "Ryung" because that's how the Koreans would say it but how is that even possible if they can't pronounce the L?

I agree, but they like consoles and Street Fighter too much lol
Japan like RPG,dating sims and impossibly difficult robot fighting games such as Armored Core.
That's true, but you haven't heard about the professional leagues/tourneys over there for SF? ;o
It's a cultural thing. Handheld/phone games are SUPER POPULAR in Japan. Consoles are also extremely popular compared to the rest of the world. Japanese enjoy playing single-player games more than anything.

Calling someone "fat" isn't really a huge deal in Asia, for the most part. It's just a statement. No need to get offended. (And honestly, people who fall in the correct BMI range still get called fat in Asia, lol.)

Monster Hunter should be an Esport. Or if a game similar to Monster Hunter became an Esport there would be a huge Japanese following. I don't know if the RTS genre can really take hold in Japan. They really like their RPGs.

The L/R thing occurs because both Korean and Japanese have only one sound that is somewhere between the two and depending on it's position in a wrod and surrounding sound can sound like either an "L" or an "R". Example: the R in ryung and the L in Seoul is written with and considered the same sound in Korean.
They have trouble distinguishing with languages in which these two sounds actually make the difference between two words because this doesn't exist in their language. Example: rip and lip would be pronounced the same by a Korean or Japanese speaker and they would have a difficult time distinguishing the two words spoken by an English speaker. This is particularly true when spoken out of context.
For the record, Ryung is pronounced more like Lyung (to an English ear) and it is [u]one[/u syllable. Tasteless' pronunciation isn't the greatest. Listen to the Korean caster's intros and you'll see.
On a related note the Japanese pronounciation of the Street Fighter character Ryu sounds like Lyoo. One syllable. Ree-oo is sufficient and will be understood by native speakers. Lee-oo would sound even better and Rye-oo is just wrong.

To all the people in here getting bent out of shape about his "fat" comment, when you say "fat" in Japanese you use the word 太い (futoi) but the same word is used to describe "big" as in muscular, so for all we know he might have been referring to europeans as "big" not necessarily "fat"
oh shit, no one let Nemuke go to US tournaments, he's going to get his mind blown haha.
Thanks for the translations, he sounds like someone who doesn't go out much. Seems like it was a great experience for him. I hope he was able to make some friends.
If I translate nemuke's tweet freely, I would write "His behavior seemed very confident" instead of "His body was impressive". I think Ansalem translated his tweet rather literally. (Btw I'm native Japanese and following nemuke's twitter)
Anyway thanks very much for translation Ansalem, I and many Japanese SC2 fans enjoyed this thread!
nemuke is a funny guy ;P played some games with him too and he actually plays pretty smart just lacking a little macro ^_^ hope i see him again at other events
Aw, an opportunity to put my Japanese fluency to worthwhile use here on TL missed ^^;
Re: the futoi / fat comment, people's "sizes" really aren't considered anywhere nearly as inappropriate amongst Japanese, much unlike how it is in Western cultures. It's almost certain he didn't meant it an overtly negative way, for what that's worth.

The wrong part would be "rai-yu." oo/ou = long vowel... Re/Le = Reh/Leh for White ppl... Ri/Li =/= Rai/Lai / always just Ri/Li
