Does anyone else get cold hands while gaming? I mean, it might just be that where I live (chicago) its that time of the year that everything starts getting cold, but it always seems that even when my body is completely warm, my hands are freezing; this is also very unlike me, as I could provide personal testimony from my girlfriend that I am a human space-heater.

Anybody know anything to fix this, or help? I just played a game with an average of 70 APM by SC2's new apm measurement and while that's not NaDa-like speed, my hands were moving pretty consistently, and now that the game is done they're still freezing.

Wear a sweater and feel free to ask for pauses where you can just stop for 20 seconds and warm up. My hands don't get cold, but if I get frustrated, they fall asleep to an almost painful extent. It helps to just stop and chill.

I think this is quite common. You don't wanna be packing on jumpers or god forbid gloves while playing obviously. The best fix i know is to get some reusable hand warmers and heat up between games

A lot of Starcraft players tend to have this problem, HuK is even cited bringing hand warmers inside the booths when he plays in tournaments. Not entirely sure why, but I think it's good for you to know you're not completely abnormal.

If you dont get cold hands naturally, I always thought it was the bodies response to the adrenaline and nervousness that come from playing the game. You could help alleviate this by actively trying to improve your circulation (Keeping a few weights near your gaming station, do a few pushups between matches and overall try to keep the blood flowing) and you can also passively increase circulation by taking more b-vitamins, whole grains etc. Good circulation is very important in trying to prevent RSI's so if your hands are getting cold and you're trying to play quickly you're going to be at higher risk of developing CTS or CuTS. The body tries to move all your blood to your organs and the only way really to do anything about it is to do something active.

edit: also try jumping jacks ^^;

I think everyone's hands get cold playing SC2. It may the be the adrenaline I think. Day9 talked about it on one of his dailies, im sure someone else here can explain it much better.

In between games, rest your hands by hanging your arms down my your sides. Usually your hands are elevated on the desk when playing which can contribute to lower circulation of blood. Rubbing, stretching and massaging them will help with circulation as well. If it's super cold where hand warmers and keep a hot cup of tea/coffee close by and drink using both hands .

I get the same issue! Thought I was the only one actually. My hands get so cold I feel weird and off when I attempt to play. I also have genetically poor track record in the circulation department so... =/. I actually try to wear warmer clothes or even sit on my hands and generally just move them around. Get them limber and toasty. If I attempt to play my cold hands, the joints begin to hurt.

Weird...my girlfriend says the same thing about me...long lost brother!?

I would try some hand warming exercises, an instrument, other games, maybe even typing some mock paragraphs. I actually like to play multiple customs vs computers or actually just sit on my hands before I try to play so my joints don't hurt as I struggle to macro effectively. Maybe try lifting something, get your blood flowing.

Yea I get this....The annoying thing is it will happen in a room that is otherwise at a comfortable temperature, so i dont want to do something that would heat the entire room. I have tried both wearing gloves and running hot water over my hands between games. Ive seen programmers with what I assume are hot-packs doing the same thing. All of these work to some extent, but when the game winds on my hands will get progressively colder. I have yet to find a great solution. Maybe some sort of localized heat source blowing warm air directly over the laptop.

Rubbing and stretching the wrists is good, but if you have a pre existing wrist problem (early stage carpal tunnel etc) you can cause more inflammation and make things worse.

During the warm months of the year this isn't a problem to me but during fall/winter it can be a pain warming up the hands after being outside.

my gf knitted me a pair of finger less gloves. She did a really really tight knit and double layered it. I put a couple neo magnets from a hardware store for the thumb mitten and the finger mitten. I think I saw that in a pair of gloves somewhere and I wanted to remake it myself. I have some bad heart genetics so I don't get a lot of blood to my fingers when I'm stressed.

So yeah. a pair of finger-less gloves is the answer. Get a tight pair to your fingers so you'll prevent muscle fatigue and twitching together (NASCAR does the same thing for the drivers to pressure the hands to keep them from getting tired.

Edit: this would be better in the general section. Some of the bw people would probably know more then me about this.

Your crotch is your natural hand warmer, use it. Its not like anyone will see you even if you are streaming unless you do a weird full body stream.

Arm pits are good too but not as super effective.

Using hand warmers or rubbing your hands together/blowing in them helps. Also try drinking hot tea/coffee/chocolate to keep your hands warm from just holding the cup.

I have this problem too. I've been shutting off my air vent and just accepting that I'm going to have to let my body burn the hell up in the florida summer heat, all for the sake of keeping my hands thawed out. I can't have it both ways, I can't have a comfortable body temp and also have comfortable hand temp, have to prioritize.

Hey I live in chicago too :D (well, suburbs)

I used to have a really hard time with cold hands, but i'm not exactly sure what I did to overcome it. I played a lot of super smash bros melee in tournaments and this was always an issue, so I have a few tricks if you really need warm hands.

1) go wash them with warm water. It works.
2) rub them together quickly. Friction is your friend.
3) keep your hands closed tightly to retain heat.

As far as during sc2... i find no matter how fast you move you won't really increase your hand warmth. This is probably because your fingers/hands are one of the fastest cooling parts of your body and while playing a game you actually are keeping them isolated from other sources. If you look at tip #3 above, you'll know that surface area relates to how much heat dissipates, so moving them around and splitting them for button presses actually increases surface area and thus they get colder. It probably doesn't help that the muscles that control your fingers aren't even in your hand, so the heat from the work isn't put into keeping your hands warm.

For RTS is have found that cold rooms suck. I've played many a game where I shivered for 20 minutes straight and the shaking actually reduced my precision. Not much you can do without simply making yourself warmer, either by making the room warmer or wearing warm clothes and cloth gloves if you need them.

What I found to be helpful is...
1) Drink a warm beverage, the heat helps.
2) Stretch each finger and wrist after every game
3) On occasion take a shot of liquor ( will take the edge off and increase blood flow.. it may impair you)

hope it helps! Also get up and walk around abit seemed to help me

Wear gloves with partial fingers, like bicycling gloves. This keeps your hands warm while allowing you to spam the keyboard and mouse.

I get this, but only when the game is important and/or I'm behind. I think the adrenaline explanation sounds plausible, but when I play some games right after getting out of a hot shower my hands are ok and I don't misclick. Maybe try soaking your hands for a while in hot water. Also knitted wrist warmers worn at the pulse point on your wrist will do wonders without overheating your body or getting in the way of your micro.. also works for skiing lol. Could also pop 2x pocket warmer pads under the wrist band

My right (mouse) hand used to get cold even when it was 70 F (~20-21 C) in my room sometimes. Then I got a Razer DeathAdder, and for some reason, the lighted logo keep my hand warm O_o. I'm sure it generates negligible heat in reality, but for some reason, it makes a difference for me.

The reason your hands get cold hands while gaming is most likely due to the effects of adrenaline running through your system. Adrenaline constricts blood vessels, witch reduces blood flow thus making your hands feel cold.

It could also be attributed to poor blood circulation to the hands.

Washing your hands is great.

Do not blow on your hands to warm them, the moisture from your breath sticks to your hands and robs the heat away.

This generally happens to me because of
a) nervousness
b) cold environment

Do what you can to control your environment, and push through the nervousness I guess. I don't really feel like it helps me when I try to warm my hands.

LOL what the fuck. x)

I get cold hands a lot, but I find that it happens to me when I get nervous during my first game or so. It goes away and I end up burning up like crazy after a few minutes into the game.

But if cold hands persist, I'd probably take a warm shower or get some hand warmers. I used to get extremely cold from head to toe, and I wrapped myself in a robe during those times.

Also consider when the last time you ate was. That kicks your metabolism into gear, and helps your body generate more heat. Wearing a bunch of sweaters and stuff can keep your core temperature up, but it won't help your extremities. If you feel the need to wear gloves in an environment with nominal temperatures, it might be because your body is starving.

man my laptop is on fire the second I start playing sc2 lol.

I'm doing elevated pushups, ones that work out my triceps help the circulation for me a bit better.
warm beverages work well, keeping the rest of your body helps too, especially your feet. if you can solve rubik's cubes fast (less than a minute) running through that a couple times can help, I'm warming up using a power ball as well. And of course, do them often. Buffcraft! :D

well it's simple, when you play an intense game, your heart starts pumping faster therefore requiring more blood so your hands and feet get cold. Also heard on bear grills that putting cold water on your face will calm you down not just mentally but physically. Also water conducts heat 25 times faster than air so running a hot tap on your hands for a minute will warm em right up :D

So apparently smokers cant take excitements ?

You are wrong btw. Once you are playing , especially on tournaments you are getting a bit of fear + lots of excitement. Increase of adrenaline in your body causes cold hands and sometimes feet as well. This isnt physical but hormones and brain related thing.
And its happening to a lot of players who compete and feel pressure. How to stop it ?

You can warm up your hands but once again they will go cold.
The only way to not get cold hands is to stay calm and increase the trust in yourself.

I used to get 'cold hands' when i had my old desk. My arms were at an incline toward my wrist and they would start shivering or something.
It might just be circulation.

I clench and unclench each knuckle really slowly till my hands ache a little bit, then rest and let the blood flow. It works. Or warm water

I get this problem too, and also the opposite, I get way to hot during summer. Anything other than normal temperature is bad for your gaming. I play at around 70-80 apm, but whenever I get hot or thirsty it drops to 50-60.

I disagree, because my core is usually warm but my hand and feet can be cold. Seems more like a circulation problem.

Most players dont get cold hands while playing, it's usually before you warm up. Maybe your APM is too low to keep your hands warm or perhaps you have bad blood circulation? I'd consider buying a hotpack(yes, the ones that mostly korean pros use) so you can rub it until you're searching for a game. Other than that, get a little bit more warmth in your room or wear a thin sweater.

edit: on topic, it's probably some bad circulation. check the your posture and the way your arms and hands rest as your play. go out for a 20 min walk before you play, or some sort of warm-up activity. these are things that i have done myself.

Crotch works wonders, male or female. Another good natural handwarmer is the armpits, especially after a game since they will be hot.

Those are both more of a temporary fix than a solution though. I would suggest heating your playing area. If you don't want to/ are unable heat your living space, maybe invest in a portable heater? I'm originally from massachusetts and can definitely relate to this problem.

I would say shake ur hands and arms in a fashion that makes ur blood go to the tip of ur fingers. When one plays games, the adrenaline starts pumping, this constricts the blood vessels (like the arteries) and causes bad circulation. To counter this, u have to be as calm as possible (I like to play calming music), shake ur hands and arms. Stretch out as much as possible(this is for ur muscles and to help circulation) and personally I like to wear warm clothes when playing starcraft, because warm muscles means less muscle fatigue.

its a common problem.
i fight against it very often.

Typical mind issue in my place.
when i am not comfortable with a MU or a oponnent i get freezing hands.
After the game it gets warm in minutes.

its the same by me with getting nervouse AFTER i won a game.

Calm down and focus on the game. keep it easy and play your best and dont stress yourself
then you get warm hands and can play better.
Your body wants more blood into your chest and brain becouse you stress yourself with gaming.

Mm according to this climate, I prefer some indoor activity But ye that's a good suggestion. Like doing push ups will warm u up and counter the natural excitedness due to adrenaline. Then u can enter the first ladder match in a calm and warm fashion. Win-win!

You can make your own hand-warmer. Just take a sock fill it with rice, then just heat it in the microwave. And you got a hand warmer, it's acually pretty damn good.

I have a problem where I hold my breath when I get into intense situations, which inversely makes me play waaaay worse. I have the cold hand problem as well, I play in an 80 degree (f) environment to help with that though as well as wool socks, a hoody, and sweats. I also have some reusable hand warmers that help.

I do whatever it takes to stay warm...

anything.

renaissanceMAN , I thought I was alone on this. I'm also from Chicago, and my cold hands actually freeze and it affects my gameplay. I usually tell my teammates that I'm only doing macro and they need to take my units. It only gets worse as it gets colder outside. lol

I reeeaaalllly hate playing with cold hands. Its kind of ridiculous how much it hurts my play. I would be better off skyping while playing or being really tired than having cold hands. My APM drops significantly, there is a marked decrease in my accuracy, and it is overall an extremely frustrating experience. I hate that feeling of not being able to move your hands as fast as you know you can.

One solution is to buy those hand warming pouches people use when they go skiing, however it doesn't eliminate the problem entirely. You can also try dressing warmly and cranking up the thermostat as much as reasonably possible. I've tried wearing gloves but that didn't turn out so well, lol. Its an odd sensation when you're sweating from the intensity of a game yet your hands feel like they've been submerged in an ice bath... No fun.

Cold hands are really annoying. The thing is, it might even be bigger than just cold hands. My fingers and toes get icycold (to the point where I can't feel them anymore) and turn completely white sometimes when I'm out in relatively (<10C) cold weather (even while wearing gloves) or go swimming in cold water. It probably has something to do with veins and blood circulation, I should go see a doctor sometimes since my grandfather has exactly the same problem.

I get cold hands during the winter so what I've been doing is filling an old water bottle with hot (but not hot enough to burn me) water. I take the bottle and put it in my hoodie pouch which acts like a hand warming chamber and extends the life of the warmer. I've used a few different shapes and sizes of bottles but I find the ones that fit my hand the best end up working the fastest.
Or someone else will.

One of the perks of Australia, I've never had cold hands before. Never really had cold anything.

Maybe they could make one of those bacon keyboards have a cooling mode, for when 3 fans aren't enough.

This might be the little kid in me, but I always have a hot cup of cocoa and a fuzzy throw to drape around my shoulders at home (during winter in Michigan) that just drapes over my hands. Probably won't help at live tourneys or anything, but good for sure at home.

FYI, if you're in a cold environment, nothing you do will warm your hands up. When your core temperature drops, your body reduces blood flow to your extremities (hands, feet, face) which means that they get cold. The only way to stop your hands from feeling cold is to raise your core body temperature. So put on a sweater and turn on a heater.

I used to suffer from ladder anxiety when I started playing SC2, which back then caused my hands got really cold while playing. I used to take a break after two games in order to warm my hands.

These days I have gotten over with the ladder anxiety, but I still get cold hands from my first 2-3 games. Usually after that I'll warm up my hands and I no longer get cold hands since I am more calm than I was before.

Had the same thing yesterday, I played awful. First I did two sets of 25-30 pushups to get my heart pumping and blood flowing but didn't help. Then I turned on the heater, put on an extra hoodie, bathrobe and quilt so I got really warm. The cold hands were gone the game after.

So my advice is to just put on a lot of layers of clothing so your entire body gets really warm. I believe cold hands isn't something you can fix well by warming the hands. Rather, the entire body is too cold and the hands suffer extra from this.

Even if your body is warm, your hand will still be cold.
Reason: Brain and your down there is cold. So they transfer the heat from your hand to your brain and your below; which make your hand cold.
Counter: turn on heater on. Heavy jacket + Head cover.

I go to the sink after a match, and put icecold water on my hands, the suddenly shift to very hot, and back to cold, then back to hot. Works like a charm long after the treatment. This also goes for your underarms, if you have any symptons of Carpal tunnel. It helps.

Good luck, mermaid

I live in a cold cold place, and I played while freezing. Yesterday I put a heater in my room and put it on super hot. Well bam promoted. No but really, at least I play a lot better when it is warm and cozy in my room. Isn't turning up the heat an alternative? Put lots of clothes on. At least then, it will only be your hands being cold.

You could wear more clothes and/or make your room warmer.
Extremities (hands, feet) get always cold first when room temperature is too low.

For a quick warmup, I recommend putting your hands in warm water for a minute. Not too hot, of course, dont burn yourself. This works much better than rubbing or using a heatpad (like the pros at gsl).

Thats because water has a relatively high heat capacity and immersing the whole surface of your hands will yield better results than just warming up a fraction of it.
No matter how hot it gets, sooner or later there's a cool breeze coming in.

I live in the middle of a forest (with really quick internet, lol) and I end up having the temp in my room drop really low sometimes (such a problem that I periodically have to actually wrap my PC in a blanket to stop the cores dropping below 20 degrees and slowing down...).

Best thing I've found is to get some small weights, and to actually just do some weights between games. Bicep, tricep curls etc. Worth looking everything up to keep it all in balance, but eh.

This is such a weird suggestion.

Dude you have an overclocker's wetdream right there man. Overclock the shit out of your comp and when someone goes "hey what kind of cooling setup you using?" you can laugh maniacally and let them know "nothing but the OEM fan son"

Boom.

On topic though, I have this too, usually I do a combo of putting my hands in warm water for a bit, doing a bunch of pushups and putting on a sweater as a last resort.

So, instead of cold hands you'll have sticky hands....no thanks.

Washing my hand with warm-hot water usually helps. Started doing that regularly during my piano practice.

I had same problem until I started washing my hands with hot water once every hour. It's good reason to take a break that IS necessary.

Works wonders, just try it.

I work at a gym, so naturally I took some gym-gloves home at winter. They are fingerless and thin just as the poster above recommended. It really works and they are cheap. It feels a bit wierd in the beginning, but after about 20 mins i got used to it. I fyou need quick heat, use your neck, but be sure not to squeeze to hard. Fap and coffee, free milk and heat.

Your cores are certainly not slowing down with lower temperature. Lower temperature will always make your cpu's job easier since all conductors have less resistance. Ideally you'd want -270° with all parts superconducting, then your comp would run overclocked to the max powered just from the battery of your wristwatch.

No matter how hot it gets, sooner or later there's a cool breeze coming in.

I have like a bucket of really hot water next to me when I have a BW session, and after each game I dip my hands into it for a couple of seconds. Works like a charm.

A shot's worth of makers mark will dilate your blood vessels and increase blood flow to your extremities, warming up your hands. I drink one before I play usually and reload as necessary.

I have cold hands all the time, especially during winter. I just get a portable heater and put it next to me so I can warm myself up while playing. Rubbing your hands and sitting on them or whatever only warms them up for a few minutes and then you're cold again. At least that's my experience.

I play with a lil bit more apm then you, and my hands still get cold. I just lair up or turn the heater on and after a game or two i feel fine. Last case scenario would be to put them under hot water, but I say this is the last case because usually you have to do it a lot like after every game

Turn the graphics up to ultra, close all the doors, and let your computer heat the room up. You could even stream HD video on a separate screen.

Playing video games is just about the only time I don't have to wear a sweater in Edmonton.

this.
processors does not slow down because its in a low temperature.
Enthusiastic overclockers even dip their CPU and cool it with liquid nitrogen to have maximum overclocking capacity, because like what Rohan wrote, lower temp = lower electrical resistance between conductors.

My hands get cold, and I mean freezing cold. You can either play a lot and force yourself to be fast.. for a few hours, this will help and they will heat up. You can wash them with cold water and rub them dry... this will help as your body will flow more blood into them to warm them.

And you can sit so your are "ABOVE" your hands and blood doesnt flow out of them.

THIS is the freakin awesome moment where someone in the north hemisphere asks it, and im with a really sunny hot weather.
Take that!

whenever you are in my position, i suffer a lot, but i have learnt some ways to keep my hands warm...
for example, wear a lot of clothes, if your core body is warm, the rest of your body will warm up, if you are too cold to do it that way, take a hot shower
clap your hands hard, it makes blood flow

I drink a lot of tea (yeh I'm from England.. what of it?) so don't really have a problem with cold hands, just wrap them around the cup for a few minutes while watching a replay and I'm fine. Also a good excuse to take a break and move around

I have had this problem for awhile. What I did was I brought a rather inneffective lamp to my desk, and I have it pretty close to my mouse hand. It's kind of an arm-light so I can make it hold over it with a rather nice area of effect.

Being innefective, it gives off a lot of heat so locally, over my mouse hand, it gets really warm. I would do the same for my keyboard hand but I have 2 problems:

1: No room for a lamp on that side
2: I don't have another such lamp

For my mouse hand, works like a charm!

I actually have a good method which works I think some sportsmen use and is used in some therapies.

Fill your sink (or bowl) with fairly hot water, and bathe your hands in there for a little bit. Like a couple of minutes or so.

Then immediately dowse or bathe them in cold water. Not for as long of course. It'll feel great, trust me I know it sounds crazy to use cold water to stop cold hands... but don't knock a working method. :D

You should be good to go, but, if you have 2 seperate bowls or sinks you can repeat hot->cold a couple more times (less time with cold, more time with hot). It really reduces stiffness and boosts circulation I think.

Give it a go if you think I'm mad.

our fingers are not genetically made to make thousands of small, rapid movements, and computers aren't around for long enough so that our body could have adapted. regular use of the keyboards and mouses leads to rapid strain injury (RSI), one of the symptoms is temporary vein tightening (don't know how they say it in english properly), basically circulation in the capillaries in your fingers won't be optimal (length in close connection with the the length of the activity). this leads to cold fingers, smoking or anything that damages the circulation catalyzes this effect. severe RSI can lead to carpal tunnel or some more serious injury

warming up, exercising you fingers often soothes the feeling, also if you use ergonomically designed input hardware you can minimize the symptoms (the best ones are really expensive though)

100% solution to the problem would be a powerball (google it), excercise 10 minutes per day and it completely prevents any RSI related phenomenon, most people don't bother with it but i bought one and my RSI completely disappeared. if i were a korean player coach i'd make it obligatory to have and use one

side effect is that my forearm is starting to be popeye-like;)

if your feet are also cold.. even when u r in a room at standard 20C temperature it can be a sign of a heart problem.
when ur heart is weak your body reacts by having it only pump blood to the most essential organs in the body.

fingers and toes get low priority compared to liver brain and kidney

if ur feet are also cold all the time as well... see a doctor

Chicity is cold as hell in the winter, no surprise you're getting cold on the furthest part of your upper limbs. You can use a hand warmer/hot pack if you want, I just always put on a jacket and grab some tea right before playing a few games warm up my body. And you can always put your hands in your body's natural pocket, the warm warm armpits.

I like warming my hands up before a game by playing a couple of songs on Stepmania. I might sound silly but it works REALLY well, if you're good at rythm games this could help a lot, not only for warmup, but for gaining handspeed aswell

Also, fingerless gloves are just great, though you have to get used to playing with them, it feels kind of weird at first

You can not not get cold hands while gaming. Whereas the hand on your keyboard shouldnt get that cold - the only problem is the mouse hand which always gets cold due to missing muscle contraction over a long period of time and therefor missing blood, as it just lies on the mouse.

The best thing against that is obvious giving the hand what it misses - muscle action which provides better blood circulation.
So it may be the best to just knead a deformable thing with your mouse hand if it gets cold.

(so maybe kneading a handwarmer pillow is the best way of dealing with cold hands^^)

greetings Meega

Your extremities (hands, feet, etc) get colder when you're nervous, and that may also be a cause.

Keeping your head warm greatly influences your overall body temperature, so wearing a hood can actually help you keep your hands warm.

I wear typing gloves that are supposed to help with circulation to your hands and fingers. They are originally for CTS, so it's a win-win situation for me. You can get them on amazon for around $20, including shipping.

I stoped playing the game and started making some music, what happends my hands startet getting very very warm.

Steelseries should build heated mouses and pads and maybe thin heated gloves for the keyboard-hand.
I would buy it.

I'm usually never cold and also don't have cold hands except while I'm gaming. It's such a nuisance.

This is actually on point. I used to get ice cold hands after a few games. My chair/desk setup so the angle from my elbob to the mouse was pointing upward (ie mouse was too high). I went and got a new desk and chair and now my arm is pretty much perfectly parallel to the ground and I havent had a problem since.
