Hi TL!
I'm about to start developing an Android Application as part of my final year University project based on something I love, Starcraft 2. In order for me to make something that would benefit the community I need to do a bit of research into what Starcraft 2 fans want or need in a mobile application. This is where TL comes in..
I would love it if you guys in the Starcraft 2 community would be able to throw ideas (no matter how unrealistic or crazy) in my direction that you would find useful in a Starcraft 2 application. The application may take on the design as a "multi-app", incorporating various ideas (some already existing) into one easy to use application.
Various Initial Ideas - Streams/VODs - Recorded Casted Games - Unit/Building Database - Build Orders (perhaps with functionality to submit your own for approval) - Online Ranking Browser - TL Calendar Integration
I want to make something that everyone can enjoy, both new and experienced players. This is why I want to develop multiple features that everyone can use and learn from. Some features an experienced player may not need so much, but newer players can really benefit from using.
Also, this application will be free of course once released.
When replying it would be useful for me to know what league each player is in so I can see what features appeal to what level of player. If you have used a SC2 application before please let me know what ones and why you like and dislike them.
Thank you for reading and I hope you can help me design an application that will be beneficial to the community .
EDIT: Provided poll. Would be grateful if everyone who has suggested something to vote. Thanks!

I've always wanted an app of just Liquipedia, since I don't really have time to watch VODs anymore. That and streams, I can just tune into a stream for a few minutes while waiting for something. Oh and I'm in no league. I don't really play.
|
Thanks very much for the input Tezzick. I'll keep the liquipedia integration in mind, its a good idea. I want to try and keep as much as possible available offline however so that would require some more thought .

I don't know if "Online Ranking Browser" is what this is but I think it would be awesome to have something like a profile manager. Basically you would put in your screen name and character ID or profile URL from Battle.net and it would show you a summary of your account. It should be allowed to add multiple accounts so you can switch back and forth between the profiles.
That would make it easy to keep tabs on how your friends are doing on the ladder while you're away from your PC. If I understand the way the Blizzard services are being referenced in other SC2 applications you should be able to pull wins (and losses of Masters), match history, achievements, leagues and a few other things I can't currently remember. But if you had the ability to go to a profile selection screen and tap on whatever profile you want (that you have previously added of course) and check up on those different aspects of their account I think that would be awesome.
Another thing that might be cool if you could implement it is some social media integration. The idea here would be that if you enter your Twitter/Facebook credentials you could tweet or share on your wall about things in the app. So if you like a vod you found through the app you could post that to your Twitter or Facebook page directly from the app, or maybe an item from the TL calendar, you could post about or maybe even add it to your Facebook events? I don't know what all else it could be applied to but it seems like integrating with social media is the thing to do these days.
EDIT: I just noticed in your post above that you wanted to keep it available offline lol. Almost everything I recommended is online functionality so I don't know if that will work for you but I think your users would get a lot of worth out of it! :D

Thanks Achaia, all great ideas. What I meant by the offline information is that I want to limit the amount I have to pull from sources on the internet. If I can achieve the same result by having a local database I would prefer to do it that way.
For example: If i were to pull build orders from liquipedia some how that would mean that if you were offline it would be unavailable. If it is stored locally you can access it at any time. I could probably design it in such a way that it retrieves the information then stores locally. These are all things to consider which is why I'm asking for input . Thanks very much

i second the liquipedia app or just a general scoreboard app. it seems besides GSL all the major tournaments happen on the weekends and i always miss 90% of the games played. i try to go on liquipedia on my phone when im out just to get updates, but it's a big pain sometimes.
|
Idk if this would fall under calendar but a list of upcoming tournaments and registration deadlines would be nice
i.e. Go4sc2, craftcup, zotac, etc....

sc2ranks integration (don't know if thats covered in online ranking browser)
NOT build orders, instead, popular openings and responses to various actions on the part of opponents- build order implies food counts, and personally, I just can't do that, maybe some people can, but if you say 13p/15h against toss with fast lair for baneling drop on sentries by Xmins, I can work for that.
liquidpedia might be way better than having your own unit/structure info- you could just like see if you could copypasta the pages if they'll let you :D
|
These are all great suggestions guys. I really value your input. It seems the Liquipedia idea is a largely wanted one so I'll move this up my priority list for now

i would love to see the app for the sc2manager.org browsergame, the developer had plans to release the official API, so ppl can work on iphone/android apps.
that would totally be the best android game/app ever..

I'll also be learning android after I focus abit more time on web development. What do you think the learning curve for Android app is ? I have 3+ years of c++ coding experience and other object oriented programming like java python
|
You are much the same as me strikerz. I have 3 years of Java programming experience. I'll let you know how it goes. I did some Android programming recently and it seems fairly simple to achieve desirable results. I'd imagine to do anything extensive though it would be much the same as programming for use on a larger platform.

If you're at all familiar with Java you should pick it up pretty quick. I actually write Android applications at work and I had mostly worked in C# before I started working on Android apps and I picked it up pretty quickly. Reference their online documentation and you should be fine. There's not really anything super difficult about the language. The only pain in the ass I guess would be the way you have to tie the interface layouts to the code behind files because it's not automated like it is in VS.

there was once an app you could use to read the forums. It is now opensource but no one can log in. I dont suggest you use that application for your project but instead that you fix the login credentials error which is the only thing wrong with it (since you have java experience )
Other than that - I would love an android app to let you see calendar events and liquipedia would be super cool too. You cant do anything with streams as JTV will send you a cease and desist since they are working on their own paid app for viewing streams. There is also an app that aggregates youtube casted videos already.
|
You should have an option to be able to flag events, and then when a result comes through for one of those events it can send you a notification with the result. Obviously you'd need to tie it to liquipedia or something to be able to do that but this would be really cool.

I want an application that can definitively prove my theory that a macro nexus for quicker mineral field saturation is economical

I was actually thinking of something like this also. I think it would be useful in some regards, but if you dont factor in aggression etc then it also becomes sort of useless. I might draw up a few ideas for some sort of building simulator with statistics shown in realtime, much like a replay. Thanks for the input!

This was Stew btw, and that was a legacy from my legendary triple nexus triple forge build off two bases :p
It's pretty tough to prove a lot of these things as there are so many variables including travel distance that vary map by map, and of course the actions of your opponent
|
Yeah, if i was to design a build order simulator with live statistics it would most likely be instant travel time, ie using the best case scenario and although this isn't realistic it would be the only way to do it.
