I'm a master's player with a SQ of 58. This means what? INC terran jokes.

Awesome post, first of all.

A question: I am a Gold leaguer who has been facing Plats as of late. I calculated my last 20 games: the average SQ was 64.6. This is mid-Diamond League according to the chart.

Would it be safe for me to assume that my macro is above my league, and that i should start focusing on micro or general strategy/tactics to improve more rapidly?

sure, unless your last 20 games are abnormal somehow this should indicate your macro, at least to the extent this score shows is above your level, assuming your current level is gold or plat this would probably mean your decision making and/or micro is lacking in comparison!

Idra's head on the graph made me laugh.

Interesting info regardless though.

I don't feel that SQ is a very accurate formula for calculating how good a player is at macro. It makes sense for earlier games but what about with the late game.

Zerg are meant to max out before their Terran and Protoss bretheren but it's not like they build 30 hatcheries once they max out. They pool their money and continue to make larvae, making their average unspent resources skyrocket later and later into the game.

I tried calculating mine over my last 10 ladder games as Zerg but I had two games where I pooled a load of unspent resources in the late game that I didn't spend because I had been maxed out and had a fuckload of larvae anyway. My SQ dropped to around 22 there.

There was also a ZvZ where I BM'd and the opponent, being an asshole back basically extended the game as long as possible by expanding eveywhere, staying about 5 hatcheries ahead of me and abusing my immobility by constant harassment and guerilla warfare. In that game which I won after 1 hour and 14 minutes, my SQ dropped to -2.7

Screenshot of my Excel spreadsheet. Note that I did a revised calculation from 8 games after I felt the late game nature of 2 of them really screwed up my final SQ rating.

With the retardedly late game games, SQ = ~42.99 average

Without. SQ = ~50.96 average

If it's important, I am a high Gold League Zerg.

Played a 17 minute game vs the very easy AI and got a score of 116 (diamond league, haven't played in months). Clearly passive games will make the score much higher than it should be, and games in lower leagues tend to be more passive than in higher leagues (my macro sucks when I play against masters league opponents in customs).

You have to remember that the OP is taking his data from the ladder where the data is already categorized by Blizzard matchmaking... he found a VERY interesting correlation in player's league and macro efficiency that almost everyone has overlooked...

I indeed found the correlation to be quite cool, and also enjoyed the worker graphs. That's obviously quite valuable information. I figured that most people would just try to calculate their SQ and use that for comparisons though, and wanted to show that they aren't necessarily comparable on an individual level.

Guess what? Your results fall into the expected range for a gold league player regardless of that inaccuracy.

I wonder what would happen if you also took out the 4 gate from your study. At higher levels masters and grandmasters are more likely to cut probes at a certain point in the game. (They probably get to 22 probes quicker still) but after that the lower level players who are messing around and making expansions are throwing off the early game

SQ was a good way to mitigate some of the problems with probe cuts since masters and grandmasters are more likely to spend their money better as their income rises.

Thanks for all the math, I don't understand all of it, but you did a damn good job.

I just did my last 20 games.

Gold 1v1 Protoss NA, Plat EU.

Seems my SQ varies. My highest was an impressive 88.3749. My lowest was a sad sad 52.34.
Avg is 69.84241318 (so half way between diamond and masters)

Pretty much enforcements my all of my friend's opinions that my decision making is one of the biggest reasons I'm not in a higher league.

Very interesting!

I'm masters and my last ten games that I didn't get maxed in and wasn't fooling around in placed my score as 80.3

I even got a 97.3, which is pretty cool! :D
