ESWC’s organizing committee is honored to announce its cooperation with Gretech (GOMTV). This partnership ensures the opportunity for Korean Starcraft II players to attend ESWC 2011. The Grand Finals is taking place in Paris, October 21-25 2011. It has a prize pool of 200.000 dollar and 7 official tournaments. Starcraft 2 will have a total of $66.000 dollar.

ESWC are hosting online qualifications in Europe and the US
Electronic Sports World Cup hosts online Starcraft II qualification in 32 countries – Cooperation with the ESL. Players all over Europe will be able to qualify for ESWC 2011 via an online qualification cup.

* Place 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 will get a slot in the Grand Final and paid entrance fee.

For Starcraft II, the top8 in the European qualifier will each get a slot in the Grand Final and paid entrance fee.

Get invited for Grand Finals+ Show Spoiler +

The online qualifier does not influence the ongoing application procedure to enter the tournament. If you get invited by ESWC and you get top8, your entrance fee will be refunded. The invite procedure is open to all players without qualification. Players will be picked based on achievements. More information about that here.

History ESWC+ Show Spoiler +

The history of ESWC can be split up in two parts. The brand was owned previously by Games-Services. They organized international standalone e-sports tournaments from 2003 until 2008. ESWC was for a long period of time the biggest and most prestigious e-sports tournament in the world. ESWC was one of the few organizers being able to organize standalone e-sports tournaments attracting then thousands of visitors. Only the WCG had better numbers in certain country's(Korea, Germany, China). Most e-sports history has been written on these ESWC events. Unfortunately NVIDIA pulled the plug in 2007. The organizers did the 2008 event but failed to find new sponsorship. Due to this, Games-Services went bankrupt and was not able to pay out its 2008 price money.

In 2009 the brand ESWC got bought by Games-Solution. It organized its 2010 event at Disneyland Paris. Many teams were skeptical, afraid that the event would be fake, they also demanded the new organization to pay out the old price money. ESWC was not forced by law to pay out the price money of the previous company but did published a bank guarantee. All teams attended and all winners got their price money few weeks after the event.

Now its 2011 and Games-Solutions organizes ESWC at the Paris Games Week. The company Oxent will be involved organizing the event. Oxent is owned by one of the previous owners of ESWC.

FAQ+ Show Spoiler +

Are Blizzcon and ESWC in the same weekend?

Blizzcon and ESWC 2011 Grand Finals will collide this year. Nothing that we can do about this situation. ESWC is taking place during the fair Paris Games week and that was set long before Blizzcon was announced. This means that players that qualified for battle.net finales at Blizzcon will not be able to attend ESWC.

Did ESWC never pay out their price money

The current owners of ESWC always paid out their price money a few weeks after the event. The previous owners that went bankrupt were unable to pay out its 2008 event. Read the history part to know more.

Why are there no notional qualifiers in my country?

National qualifiers are organized by local partners. Local e-sports companies in most of the cases. These companies have been struggling to survive and are simply unable to organize local qualifications. 5 years ago it was a different economy and so its hard to find partners that are able to do this. Partners pay travel and hotel costs of winners of their qualification.

The model that ESWC is using for qualification is not working as good as it used to be. That's why the application procedure and the online qualifications were put together in order to make sure teams and players are able to attend our event.

Why is WCG able to do it and ESWC is not

The model of WCG is that Samsung pays everything. And that's really expensive model that works as long as Samsung pays the bills.

How will the future look like

Bright, but we'll need to find new ways of making this work. Online qualifiers is one of them, but maybe something else.

What about the boycott that is currently going on

Its up to teams to decide whether they want to attend or not. But regarding the statement, there are some facts that are not true. Teams and players don't "buy" themselves into the tournament, they apply. Specialized community figures will make a selection of these applications. Some will be accepted, some will not.

We hope that these teams that decided to boycott will still take the opportunity to qualify online.

The funny part of this story is, that many semi-professional organizations are willing and able to pay the fee. This matter has more implications on the CS tournament than on others. Some other community's(specially CSS) are also using this boycott to show that they see it as a positive thing and massively applied for a slot.

This application procedure is an extra service to the community. Its for a team to decide what to do with it.

Do you have to pay to play in the online qualifiers?

Yes you do, its 10 dollar per person, 50 dollar per team. Its done via paypal and visit the payment information on the portal for more information.

a lot of money, a very big prizepool, a history lesson learned and big Korean names. Sounds like an exciting viewer weekend. ^^ Can't wait to see who casts it.
btw, if you don't have a team, you better get second or first in the qualifier. ^^

I'm excited about MKP, MC, and Nada coming to a foreign tournament. I'm not so excited it has to be ESWC.

Also, what's with the 5th box in the last image? That is so out of place.

ESWC is probably the second most famous tournament behind WCG, should be great. But yeah, why did they suddenly stop with the Korean qualifications? They always had those in WC3. Kinda strange with invitations for a "world cup"-alike tournament.

This is pretty big news; i reckon MKP will come second, because that is what he is best at, and this could be another tournament for MC to bag NaDa will lose to MKP. Easy predictions hehe

A really nice prize pool; and with the Koreans it should provide some good competitions.

such bullshit, haha. i know that the bw com is really proud that esport got so huge in Korea - but depending on how you define eSports, there were some sick, huge tournaments (mostly Quake) way before BW got huge.

Anyways:
I can just guess, but the reason for inviting Koreans is prob (the same as for many other tournaments before), cuz due to the language its tough for many organizers to have qualifiers in Korea - and even then it might be tough to get top huge names to participate in it.
And by inviting the big players you can ensure to have some nice competition...
+ why should it be a disadvantage for the foreign community? the winners of the qualifiers get hotel etc paid, too. (yes, for foreign players its tougher to get an "invite", but that doesnt matter for the community as a whole)

I doubt top teams will change their mind unless ESWC does things differently.

UGH! Thanks Grettin. Well, I guess I'll continue to keep my eyes out for any news. Still a bit of time left to fix this, but my hopes have definitely deflated.

Oh, and if you want to hear Scoots, Wheats and Slashers comment about the whole thing, check the Lo3 episode from 1st of september.

I doubt top teams will change their mind unless ESWC does things differently.

Actually if you read the first couple pages of this thread you'd see the situation changed.

I'm only reading comments about their debt and what has been paid off? Read the thread i linked and show me where does it say that the situation has changed, because i seem to be blind to notice it.

The main reason why teams seem to be boycotting this is still there. Unless this "application" system changes everything.

Yeah I was wondering about the odd placement of their nickname in their names too xP

The way it is now (Aside from MarineKing's) is like: Gr "IdrA" eg Fields!

It looks like they picked fan favorites. They invite fan favorites as a marketing tactic to attract an audience. In SC2, Koreans are liked by both foreigners and koreans (of course), maybe not so much vice versa which is my opinion on why no foreigners were invited.

In SC2, who is willing to watch a tournament without big names? With the amount of bias and perplexed individuals that play this game (read the forum debates if you don't believe me) you have to have some "guaranteed" big "korean" names to attract attention otherwise a vast majority of the audience will end up watching some other stream; notably IPL rebroadcasted episodes.

BlizzCon (Oct 21-22) is on the same weekend as ESWC (Oct 21-25) - and NesTea + Mvp are gonna represent Korea in Anaheim. So even though they are the best, even they cant compete at 2 places at the same time
MC, MKP, NaDa are pretty solid picks anyways^^

This is great news, but we have to bear in mind that almost every pro team is boycotting the event because of the $1000 entry fee, so i don't know if we'll see a lot of contenders to those three players (besides our top frenchy, i hope Stephano or ToD wins the whole thing, bring ESWC back home ! )

The picks are defnitely solid. Who cares if these are not the biggest names in SC2. These players can take games off the biggest names which only means the content they present will be highly entertaining.

They'll probably prefer to go to GSL finals then, I guess that they will then invite other koreans, like they did at one MLG (i believe) when Bomber couldn't get there, due to visa problems.

I would have prefered to have one korean of each race invited, but this 3 are still awesome ^_^

Nada at foreign again !
Deffinetely watch
Time for him to grab some gold

I dont mind the schedule of eswc and blizzcon collide
But it would be damned if nada and mvp collide

Furthermore
Blizzcon has too many asian
Kr, tw, cn, some sea player
They even have asian na player

Dont mean to be racist
But if the like of idra, demu, tlo, stephano, nerchio etc goes to eswc
Then foreigner faithfull will pack eswc as much as blizzcon

Why are you writing your sentences in stanzas? This is a forum, not a poem for your literature class.

I am joking btw. I really think we need some people from every region so we can see different playstyles and a variety of interesting games. Everybody these days have the same timings because they copy builds instead of innovate their own which only makes for a hard counter, one sided game. But, we will see. Good luck to all the players attending!

Maybe you should add to the OP that ESWC canceled the inscription fees ($200/player) which was why almost every major team is/was boycotting the event. Hopefully everything turns out well and we'll have a nice event in france

That's weird, in the French version, they say July is coming, instead of Nada...

"Blizzcon and ESWC 2011 Grand Finals will collide this year. Nothing that we can do about this situation. ESWC iS taking place during the fair Paris Games week and that was set long before Blizzcon was announced. This means that players that qualified for battle.net finales at Blizzcon will not be able to attend ESWC. "

Sounds like they want the history and prestige that comes along with ESWC without having to pay for it. Change the name or own up to the commitments ESWC previously made to the players.

And all I got from reading that 'history' was:

The following GSL players will attend ESWC 2011:

Lee "MarineKing" Jung Hoon (Terran)
The terran player that ended up three times in the GSL finals, ESWC might be his next one.

Jang Min "MC" Chul (Protoss)
Considered one of the best players in the world. The two times GSL Champion MC will be back in Europe.

Lee Yun "NaDa" Yeol
The Genius himself attending ESWC and he's looking for a gold medal.

One of these guys isn't a GSL player anymore...

Anyone knows who is really coming between NaDa and July ? I would love to see both of them

Very interesting that there are now four (five?) so called world championships, and only one is anywhere near giving anyone from any country a chance to participate, and even then there are limits.

* IeSF - every member country can send ONE participant, regardless of level. Can't wait for the afghani bronze player to show up in one of the coming editions. Though this is the only one remotely close to allowing all countries to participate should they choose to do so, it doesn't really have the best players in the world as a result of that...

* WCG - the one with qualifiers in every country that can muster up enough tolerance to deal with that organisation. However since not all countries have qualifiers, this is not a real WC (I should point out that it's the WCG that holds the qualifiers).

* Intel Extreme Masters (world championships) - the one with regional qualifiers and a total of (hold on to your hats) 12 - TWELVE - participants in the finals. Come on, that's ridiculous. Not a real WC.

* ESWC - Inviting some and forcing others to qualify doesn't make a real WC. Sorry, but try again.

* GSL World Championships - this is the reason i put five in parentheses. probably korean arrogance, but Korea vs the World is not a real WC.

So what's my point? Give me money and I'll make a proper WC. Oh, and don't call yourself a World Championship/Cup when you're not really that.
