While MLG is held mostly indoor (I hope), those who are planning to travel to Raleigh may want to make contingency travel plans as well as prepare themselves for possible heavy rainfall.
I pray for the stability of the MLG streams for home-viewers and barcraft participants!
A related question: a friend of mine is planning to attend the live event for the first time. Any MLG veterans have tips as to what he should bring along? (ie snacks/drinks/folding chair/spare socks)
I hope there is a large number of Blizzard brass in attendance when the internet goes out due to the storm and the games are unable to be played due to a lack of LAN, maybe then they will come to their senses.
At the same time I hope the storm isn't too bad and no one is harmed and mlg goes off without a hitch.
Mod should change the title with the hurricane warning. This has nothing to do with any zerg. It isn't clever, considering he used the plural form of zerg.

Hurricanes are overrated. The only time serious damage occurs is if you are within the eye wall. Everything else is just normal rain with a tad bit of wind/gusts.
lol, there go the streams again...gotta wonder when convention centers will start providing proper internet connections so that organizers like MLG don't have to settle for hacks like satellite connections.

(sorry for misleading title :p)
Could you change the title? I was really hoping to read about what people had to say regarding the safety of being out there amidst the hurricane but all I'm reading are these stupid posts about the title.
Lol the only reason i knew that the OP was talking about a hurricane was because I live in florida and know about the hurricane that is coming because it is going to hit Florida before it hits North Carolina.
I know this thread has had a lot of jokes about Yellow and stuff, but as someone who's been following hurricanes for a while(I live in S. FL) I just want to say that you need to take this very seriously. This storm is blowing up like I haven't seen in a while, and it is going to very strong in the next 24 hours. If you're going to be in the SE USA you need to pay very close attention to this.
This is the problem with thread OPs trying to be clever. 4 pages of 'OMG MISLEADING TITLE!' instead of discussion on what it actually is. Take care next time.
As for the forecast, I hope it doesn't affect the event too much. MLG is still using those satellite trucks right? They're bound to be in the firing line if the storm hits the city.

Florida hasnt had a serious hurricane since hurricane charlie back in 04. I live in central florida so I don't have it as bad as you that lives in s fl.

So some friends and I were going to travel to MLG raleigh this weekend. Should we still go? Under what conditions would it be ok to still go to South Carolina on the 26th-28th?

Yeah I'm actually pretty mad about this being someone who is planning on travelling to Raleigh and is concerned about the storm.

Wilma was a major hurricane in Oct 05, but not as bad as Charlie. We've been pretty lucky the last few years, but damn did we deserve a break after 2004 and 2005.

Watch the news and listen to the Nation Hurricane Center. It's impossible to say exactly where it will go right now. There will likely(almost certainly) be evacuations in whatever area it makes landfall so I obviously wouldn't recommend going wherever that is.
I am a little angry that everyone is saying "oh I got trolled, thought yellow was coming". This hurricane can be a serious threat to peoples lives and can potentialy ruin this event. This news needs to be taken seriously as a source of potential disaster.
Anyways, I hope that a something amazing happens and this misses the Carolinas. I want a good back to school MLG.
anyone know if my drive down on thursday will be affected by this at any point? im coming from toronto, canada
so far it looks like i should be able to avoid it and the bulk of the storm will hit fri-sat, but i just want to make sure so i'm not driving down in bad weather

This this this.I live in Florida and had a few close calls to the eye wall in the past decade. Even so, if you are outside of the wall expect a typical overcast day with rain. I remember a few years back where we played ultimate frisbee in a hurricane for the lulz.
this is bs man. I live in raleigh, and am playing in the event. My first starcraft tournament, and MLG there has to be a storm haha. but I don't think category 2 will cause serious issues. Really depends on how close to us it gets. But it shouldn't be anything but some heavy rainfall and winds. Hopefully MLG staff is preparing for the wost case anyway.

Having been through the eye of a Cat 2 hurricane, you're probably not gonna see much beyond a few tree limbs etc being torn down and a lot of leaves and general crap / trash spread everywhere. We lost power where I was, depends how resilient the electrical system is. This is also being surrounded by the ocean, inland hurricanes get weak pretty quickly.

It's supposed to be Category 3 by the time it nails that area and I'd expect it to settle back down to 2, then 1 once it makes landfall.

I live in Southern Louisiana (extremely south) and Cat 2 isn't that big of a deal. The only way I can see a Cat 2 lifting a house is if the house is shitty and it is at the worst possible part. For Cat 2 Hurricanes, no one in my area evacuations and a lot of people actually play in the hurricane. The wind is really soothing.
Now of course, depending on the path, it might be a mild thunderstorm, and we'd get unlucky to get the power knocked out, but it is no wreaking havoc matter. Although no electricity would suck for MLG. Candadar is 100% correct though.

100 million dollar damages seems pretty big deal for me
That is one Cat 2 hurricane out of a bunch...and it is in Mexico, so maybe they don't have the best infrastructure. Either way, I'd consider it an extenuating circumstance. Also, it hit a month after another hurricane, so that might have something to do with it.
edit: Holy shit, Raleigh is pretty far inland. It shouldn't be anything.

First of all, there's still a ways to go yet. 5 days is an eternity for hurricanes, even small changes in the hurricane's path now can change where it will land (if at all) drastically.
I was living in the Raleigh during Hurricane Fran in 96 (a category 3), and honestly, it was bad. We lost power for 5 days, and there was debris everywhere. Roads closed, etc. In that one, the eye came pretty close to where I lived.
If it's a Category 2 or less when it makes landfall, it will probably just be a very rainy day. Raleigh is pretty far inland, so if it's barely a Category 3 or less, the event should be fine.
I forgot about MLG this weekend! Heard about the hurricane but didn't make the connection. Hope everyone stays safe and god I hope teh internetz hold up during the storm, wish I was going even more now since this might cause some additional excitement/unpredictability. Would be kind of cool to be huddled in a convention center with thousands of SC2 fans and pros while a frickin hurricane rages outside.

Shouldn't hit till Sat at the earliest. So competitors should arrive before it affects flights. The only thing I worry about it leaks in the convention center. It happened before, most of the center is underground. Will prob be like the rain at Columbus.

This guy says it exactly how i feel. A category 2 hurricane has winds around 100 mph. 100 mph winds are very dangerous and are a big threat. Whoever is saying that a category 2 hurricane isn't a big deal, is going to get themselves killed. By no means do I think that this is the end of the world, but I think a great amount of caution should be taken and because it's such an early stage in the hurricane it could intensify even more or it could actually just dwindle out and never even touch land. But seriously guys for the sake of your lives, don't say that 100mph winds are nothing lol.

Raleigh is too far inland to experience the full effect of a Category 2. It'd be so much weaker by the time it gets to Raleigh, and since it is a Category 2 in the first place, there is hardly anything to worry about.

If you look at the picture linked above, Raleigh is roughly just right and in the middle of the "I" in "WILMINGTON". So I don't know if Raleigh is too far inland like people are saying. It's right on the border between High and Med threat level.

Yes, you shouldn't walk around the junkyard filled with light pieces of sharp metal. Yes, you shouldn't go swim 100 yards out in the ocean. But to think that you need to board up, get dozens of gallons of gas + a generator ready, and get enough food to last you a week for a fucking Cat 2 is a joke.
I've been through many, many hurricanes in my lifetime and for EVERY SINGLE Cat 1 or Cat 2 I have never boarded up anything and I've NEVER had a problem EVER. Neither has anyone I known, for that fact. I've taken my dog for a fucking walk during a Cat 1 once.
Yes, you shouldn't take it as a rainshower on a sunny Summer afternoon. That's a granted for ANY 'major' storm. However, you are treating this as if it's a damn Cat 4, as I said earlier.
I hate when Europeans talk about Hurricane like they know. You are not qualified to give advice unless you got a degree in the subject or have experienced it personally. Cat 1 is literally a rainshower and a Cat 2 is "Oh something might happen if I'm drunk and stupid or I live on the edge of a giant muddy hill"

Hotels are usually extremely safe because of their structure. If it gets to be unusually bad and you have no way to evacuate, hospitals and such are good places to go for shelter. People survived Katrina in hospitals in New Orleans, so yeah...you shouldn't die.

I kind of hope it goes more East and then bears West to hit the Carolina's like the last few Hurricane's that have come close.
I'm just glad it isn't going for Louisiana (unless it trolls us and cuts through Flordia). Picking up debris and living without power for a few weeks in stupidly hot weather sucked soooo much for Katrina.

Raleigh is a few hours away (something like 130-150 miles) from the coast. I'd say we'll see rain and very average tstorms. A hurricane hitting this town is a rare event :D
Could certainly create some stream issues though..
In areas where the building codes and infrastructure are designed with hurricanes in mind, a category 2 hurricane is very nearly completely harmless. Just stay inside where flying objects won't smack you, and you should be ok. Nobody here worries about a hurricane until it hits category 3, and we've been through a lot of hurricanes.
Raleigh is pretty far inland, so I would think even with the hurricane making landfall at category 3, it will weaken enough that it won't be dangerous by the time it hits Raleigh. Make sure to fly in ahead of the hurricane, and prepare for lots and lots of rain, and you'll be fine.

i'm in florida. hurricanes are always something you should prepare for even if it's a cat 1, at least in this state. the guy that said hurricanes under cat 3 are a joke is acting tough or something imo.
CAT 2 hurricane shouldn't be too much for anyone who is used to hurricanes, but can be scary for someone new to hurricanes. MLG may want to consider rescheduling the event because keeping up satellite signal in the middle of a hurricane is going to be one tough task.
Having lived in Florida all 21 years of my life, I can tell you that people only get extremely worried and over-prepared when a category 4/5 hurricane rolls around. And it's the coastal cities/areas that get affected the most. Not to say of course, that inland areas don't have some after-effects too, but it's not as major as the coastline.
With Raleigh being so far in-land, I imagine you wouldn't have to worry about much except a breeze with gusting, and rain. If it's your first time experiencing a hurricane, then do take caution, but I can almost guarantee you it won't be as devastating as you might think.
Hope everyone gets to Raleigh safe and doesn't have any travel problems!!
Hopefully this weather wont cause lag for the competition because of a lack of LAN support from Blizzard =.= And on that same note, hope the streams run as well as they did in Colombus, Anaheim.

It proves still, that category 2 is something that should not be taken lightly. It can be very serious threat.
I dont even understand why i need to teach this kind of stuff to people. People are really fucking stupid, im sorry but this seems to be the case. Every fucking time i need to teach people even the simpliest things.
Compared to where he's from it's perfectly reasonable..Being that far inland, too....I mean really. Just don't get all pissy because someone is giving perfectly reasonable explanations. He's NOT the only one that thinks that way. Many people stay in town in New Orleans duing the lower tier hurricanes. I don't know about playing in them, but sure.
I absolutely understand what you're trying to say. My apologies if I came off rude and pissy, that was not my intention and was truly on accident. I definitely think that yes it's not that big of a deal, but it's definitely nothing to take too lightly.
If you look at the picture linked above, Raleigh is roughly just right and in the middle of the "I" in "WILMINGTON". So I don't know if Raleigh is too far inland like people are saying. It's right on the border between High and Med threat level.
Ah, I'm sorry. I think the guy you quoted's language just kinda threw me for a loop. I'm sorry, and I do understand what you are trying to say.
i mean, anything strong enough to be called a hurricane can potentially do work... there's a reason they start calling it a hurricane and not a tropical storm. another FL resident here, the worst hurricane i had in a long time was either 2 or 3. it broke a really old tree on our front yard that nearly landed on me in my sleep, and it snapped multiple telephone poles which knocked out power in many of the surrounding areas, i'd say at least a quarter of broward county, for 2 weeks. we were a very hurricane proof area but the telephone lines just "happened to not be" redone for a few years too many.
it wasn't as bad as new orleans where people abandoned the area, but there were almost no active police and it took like 5 days for my friends and i to find a very specific spot that caught a cellphone signal, and it was on accident. you could pretty easily steal from stores and stuff like that. forget about running any kind of event that requires electricity without a mass amount of expensive as fuck generators. even then, good luck with the internet and hope the ISP had their generators running in anticipation and are able to do even close to as good of a job as they normally could with people likely taking work off.
power outages could totally ruin raleigh, and while you might not be worried about trees being uprooted left and right and falling on people or some shit, it's still serious business.
While it's very possible that much of Raleigh and the eastern coast of NC will lose power, its very unlikely, the power near the venue is pretty stable and not open to the elements. It is however looking like a potential category 2-3 when it hits the Raleigh area which is not a laughing matter if you're not from around the area. Bring an umbrella or two or even a poncho as umbrellas snap like toothpicks in 100+ winds.

This is the most likely worry if any seeing as they use a satellite truck to boost the signal and satellite based information is highly vulnerable to heavy storms. If the hurrican were to make landfall it would diminish so quickly that at 150 miles in it'd be lucky to be a cat 1 by the time the worst part (the eye wall) got to the city. I'd expect at worst case for the city to see high win gusts and above average rain fall and some lightning but nothing that will knock buildings down.
The most devastating thing that could happen from a tournament stand point would be a power outage.

Didn't the venue at Columbus get flooded when MLG was there? I'ld imagine a small hurricane isn't that big of a deal when a flood didn't do anything to the streams...
And to the people who are saying under Cat 3 is nothing, it is obvious that a hurricane under that level is not going to destroy the city, but it will certainly disrupt the event. A direct hit, even inland as far as Raleigh, will almost definitely cut all electricity, and certainly not be a situation where one could play Starcraft. People are talking about having stream outages, but if there is a hit on North Carolina, there will be no stream at all that day.
But seriously, this is huge. Aside from possible damage, having no power would ruin the entire event..even if there are moments without power. (cut games, etc.) It's going to be crazy.
I thought hurricanes and thunderstorms are normal in carolina? Carolina hurricane hockey club anybody? I live in vancouver canada which is far west coast where I have never experienced or seen a hurricane or huge thunderstorms in my life but I thought it was common in the east / middle / south of the states to have it.

The last time a major hurricane made landfall on the East (not gulf) coast was 2004. Last major landfall in the US period was in 2005 (though there were a couple high Category 2 hurricanes more recent)
When Cbus was wrapping up, I said these exact words to my friend on vent: "Come hell or high water, I'm going to be at Raleigh."
Son of a bitch.
Seriously though, this is probably going to be shitty for people driving/flying in or watching. Should be fine if you're taking the train. If you're attending live, it probably won't be a major concern once you're actually there. The problem is just going to be getting there. Should be too far inland to have a major impact on the event itself, right?

I think this MLG will be more, expect people to refresh stream everytime... Probably could reach a 100 million views out of the weather.

Not sure if trolling but anyway, category 2 is certainly not a joke. This is serious stuff.
Wow, that's the craziest path for a hurricane ever. Probably no other hurricane has traveled along and parallel to a land mass for so long, especially when considering this one had a land mass on either side so you basically double the length of one travelling up a normal coast.
The last big hurricane (that I can remember) that actually hit NC hard was Hurricane Floyd. That was a category 4. Raleigh wasn't hit hard at all during that storm. They just had heavy rainfall and some flooding. There was even flloding in Winston-Salem, NC which is around 200ish miles west of Raleigh. Now the Greenville, Rocky Mount areas got extremely fucked up by it. But again, this was a CAT 4.
I'm honestly not too worried about a CAT 2 because Raleigh is damn near in the center of the state. Expect heavy rain fall, that's about it. Nothing too crazy.
Raleigh is pretty far inland.. it won't be much more then a bad thunderstorm at its worst. I don't think anyone going will have any issues at all. The stream may go down for a bit though unfortunately.
I live in Raleigh, I think the biggest worry is if the thing strengthens to a Cat 4 somehow... that could be bad.
One heads up to everyone though, around the Raleigh area especially near where MLG is we always get a lot of flooding of roads. We have a lot of these river areas near low points in roads and when we get a lot of rains we tend to have a lot of flooding on mostly back roads. I only bring it up so that if we do get a lot of rain and people are driving through those areas take it slow, try not to drive through if you can because people's cars flood all the time when they think they can get through.
It isn't really a big deal, more of a pain then anything but for whatever reason that always happens here and it shuts down random roads.

Those are words of wisdom. Because we are several hours inland it is rare for wind to cause too much trouble (Fran being an exception), but the flooding is what gets people. If you see a puddle do not test its depth by driving into it!
The weather forecast says it will most likely strenghten to a Catergory 4 hurricane by the time it hits the carolinas, this could be very bad for MLG....
I lived on the Gulf coast for over a decade, and a Category 2 hurricane, while not a "joke", also isn't something to freak out about. It could definitely disrupt the tournament, but as far as property and personal damage, I highly doubt there will be much in Raleigh. If it makes landfall as a Cat 2 in NC, it will be a strong thunderstorm by the time it hits Raleigh (probably Tropical Depression strength, ~30-40mph winds).
On August 24 2011 01:29 ExileR wrote: I've heard that it might be turning into a Category 4 hurricane soon and might be considered a threat?! O=
Yes, a Cat4 is a serious threat. If a Cat 2 is analog to a stiff breeze, then a Cat 4 is analog to a medium size tornado. A Cat 4 can cause serious, serious damage, even tens of miles inland.
Being from Florida I can say that even a category 2 can be a threat, just the odds are lower.
Simply put you have to worry about debris (proper projectiles can do damage at lower wind speeds) Secondly, you have to worry about tornadoes (yes, hurricanes can cause tornadoes, dealing damage to limited areas)
So, think of it was 1/1000 or 1/10000 buildings getting trashed...which is fine as long as you aren't that 1
On August 24 2011 01:29 ExileR wrote: I've heard that it might be turning into a Category 4 hurricane soon and might be considered a threat?! O=
Yea I think its predicted to become a 4 for a short time, but become a 3 before it hits land. But who knows, as long as it doesnt disrupt my stream
I feel sorry for people who have just moved to FLA!. my step grandfather just retired down there as well. Hopefully everything turns out okay. Also, Raleigh better not be disrupted heavily by it. =/ Going to be disappointed because I didn't get to watch the last MLG live.
So I'd love for none of this to go up the eastern coast and to continue to get stronger, hit the Texas coast and bring some rain next week. currently 68 days of over 100 (most of those in the 109-114 range) is getting very old and very dry

Seriously, for people who are attending, take some simple steps to prepare: pack some food (that doesn't require preparation, like granola bars or something) and water in your car Fill your gas tank before the storm comes!
If the storm knocks out utils and closes gas stations (even basic flooding can cause this) you don't want to be stranded! It's simple stuff, and even if the storm doesn't really affect Raleigh, I guarantee you won't mind having some bottles of water and snacks on you during MLG!

In all seriousness, it appears that Mother Nature hates MLG. They spend a TON of $ to get thier stream fixed, then it's like "Oh guess what first hurricane to make landfall the US in like 7 4 years is not only coming this weekend, but the trajectory puts it hitting NC!" Poor MLG

Also, felt it here in NJ. Neighbors say they have friends/family who felt it from Texas o.O. That doesn't sound possible given it was a 5.8 originating in Virginia.
Now didn't they say the weather was the cause of the other stream problems. How do they find these cities that have crazy storms in the summer? MLG needs to come to Cali.

The question is, 'will there be enough Arks?'
There are not enough Arks. Not enough by half.

He's right, though. Where Raleigh is situated, a category 2 storm would lose power as it goes overland, and you're probably not going to get much besides very heavy rain and occasional strong wind gusts. I've lived in the Triangle area for 9 years (total, not continuously), and honestly the winter storm (around 2000 ish) was more disruptive than any hurricane or tropical storm that's ever hit us.
On the other hand, I wouldn't be out and about in Hurricane Irene either, and I certainly wouldn't be driving on account of the visibility and how hard it is to drive in heavy rain. I had originally planned on going to MLG, but depending on how things look, I might just watch some of the streams instead.

Raleigh doesn't usually get hit directly by hurricanes, and from what it looks like the strongest parts of Irene will be missing Raleigh. Hopefully the generators are able to keep up with everything if the power goes out, because I'd bet there will be quite a lot of rain and some strong gusts of wind if nothing else.
yes its looking like the worst of it is going to be well east of Raleigh at the moment. Raleigh is pretty far inland anyway it's not even in high impact zone if it was tracking further west.

Currently it is forecasted that Wilson North Carolina will be hit by 39mph winds. Wilson is about 41 miles east of Raleigh. I'm no hurricane expert but I think Raleigh will be safe, however I would think that traveling to North Carolina might be difficult especially if you are coming in by plane.

If the hurricane brushes more then the edges of itself against or even near the event don't expect an event. Unless they bring generators of a massive scale. Honestly I am surprised the event is still even on and not just postponed a week with a major hurricane having a possibility of hitting.
This is why they need to hold these events in oh I dunno.. my neck of the woods, we've been hurricane and natural disaster free for six years.

I wish they would hold one in the pacific northwest. Seattle would be a great option. I'd actually go, and no threat of hurricanes! Unless we have a major earth quake, or Mount Rainier blows, we're good.
That said, everyone stay safe if you are going to Raleigh. Hopefully it moves a bit north or south of that area, and hopefully wherever it does make land fall the damage and loss of life are at a minimum (zero would be awesome).

Anna jokingly tweeted, mainly implying that it was sunny and no rain this morning.
So from what I am reading, thousands of people are being evacuated from the east coast due to the hurricane and alot of flights have been cancelled too. Should be an interesting MLG.
Current weather in Raleigh is awesome. Gorgeous day. Biggest complaint is 90 degree heat.
60% chance of rain Friday night with 12 MPH winds.
Saturday (when the hurricane hits WAY east) there is 50% chance of rain and I have seen some say 30 and some say 40 MPH winds. That is very windy by Raleigh standards, (It turns out Raleigh is usually one of the least windy cities in the world) but not THAT bad.
Basically, I would not plan to be on the road Saturday night, but if you can get in tonight and have a place to stay Saturday then you should be fine.
If it does rain I am still seeing 1-2 inches expected.
