Really good news--I quite enjoyed IPL seasons one and 2. great production value, the commentators were good, and the quality of the games was high, as well.
This looks pretty sick. Really looking forward to what IGN's production can bring to a live event. Also, looks like another theme this time (origins). Hype!
I guess that the broader approach has been taken, because of the critics who pointed out the lack of Koreans.
And the free travel is supposed to be an answer to the Koreans who refused to play in NASL? If so, then the "backmail" has worked out for them, because future leagues will always give in and this is going to establish a precedent.

Free travel is for ANYONE who qualifies in the online qualifiers. That means it's not just for Koreans, but also EU/NA players that qualify online.
This worked out well for players of every region, not just Korea.
16 enter the championship bracket through the live event, 8 from the online qualifier, what about the other 8? And I am glad seeing IGN finally turning into serious competitive gaming with online qualifiers where everybody can participate. Too long have I missed the awesomeness. :-)

If ever there were an announcement that would turn my eyes into lower-case As surrounded by circles, this might just be it! Atlantic City is a hella fun place to throw an event like this.
While I haven't really followed the IPL that closely before this event seems to be really good. Your production so far seems to always be top notch. I will watch this for sure
Wow , seems f*cking amazing! white-ra wants to chop his balls off..he wen 15k instead of like the 50k that should be IPL´s 3 prize pool i d like to hear more about the format , but idk sounds cool.. i hope its not single elimination.. koreans ??? plz Nestea!
The invites are probably better used on foreigners if Koreans can participate in all qualifiers :D That´s the point I´m very curious, if the 4 "global qualifiers" are 4times global or 1 qualifier for a region. So Top 2 Korean/EU/America/SEA(?) There might be many Koreans in open tourney as well, since so many teams have sponsoring/relations from foreign teams. Really looking forward for it, the production from IPL was always amazing and with many Koreans the playlvl will be ridiculous.
Production values are awesome but people will just never get as hyped for replay casting as they do for live events. While there's absolutely a market for replay casting events, it seems like a shame that players would compete for a $50,000 prize pool in IPL2 and finish the entire tournament at a leisurely pace God-knows-how-many weeks ago.
This is going to be fucking amazing. If IGN does this right is has the potential to be bigger than Dreamhack. Bigger than NASL. Bigger than MLG. Bigger than the GSL.
Yeah will be curious to see how the qualifiers will work and who the invites will be. I assume they'll probably use their invites on foreigners so koreans will have to qualify through the online open brackets or in person lan.
Not sure how many koreans will fly out to play in the live 256 man tourney which is essentially the mlg open bracket. However, a 100k prize pool is more enticing than the mlg one so I hope a ton fly out to compete in the open bracket! Spread the word to korean teams. They must know about this!
The venue is awesome. I hope this type of IPL live event becomes a regular thing, and that the prize pool grows with time. This type of venue combined with a large prize could capture mainstream media attention, especially if it became a regular thing.
argh, i had already booked my plane ticket for MLG Providence. Depending on how the hype around this turns out I might have to seriously consider going for this over that... or both :p
So so so excited! Definitely going to be there. I'm super thrilled that something is actually going to be happening within a reasonable distance from my house. Fuck this is awesome!
Another event where half the bracket gets a huge advantage by being invited, then everyone flies in the day before, takes drugs to stay awake, and plays without being able to prepare. I await the day when SC2 outgrows this phase.

Only 8 players get invited. Another 8 have to qualify and earn it by playing the online qualifiers. The other 16 will have to qualify in person.
"The rumors are true! The tournament we told you about is going to happen!"
Really great though, looks like IPL is taking what NASL should have been and running with it. I've always loved IPL's production quality, so I'm sure this event will not disappoint. Atlantic City, so swanky!
Wow, this is big! I'm really looking forward to it. The prize pool will attract the top sc2 players especially with all the perks for qualifier winners. And with IGN/IPL behind this, I’m sure it will have top notch production value and not be as amateurish as some other leagues out there. I really enjoyed watching IPL2 (despite the confusing schedule). Can’t wait IPL3!
I really like the flat payout structure IGN uses. Using steep payout structures is just screaming for attention, while this actually makes pursuing ones passion for gaming on a competative/professional level more sustainable for more people.
Yeah this is huge, don't invite players without sportsmanship, like those that swear at other pro-players. There must be rules like in real sports, if a football/soccer player say 'F U' to another player in officail televised game FIFA will fine the whole team and ban the player for few matches. You all know who that is, and someone someday won't be so understanding as mouz.Mana and will kick his ass in real life.
This seems like the biggest announcement of the day. Too bad it got buried.
Someone at IPL needs to talk to their publicist. You pick the worst possible day to announce something so big. You should have postponed the announcement for the next news cycle.

How often do invited players win over qualifying players? It certainly hasn't happened in GSL except in MMA's case so far for the Ro32. Even so, it was less of an invite and more of him qualifying through MLG rather than the prelims.
In TSL3 1st and 2nd place both had to qualify in among a significant field of invitees.
Puma was the only person who actually needed to qualify into NASL, the rest of the league was invite only, and he ended up winning.
The only question I have, with global qualifiers and invites, are we going to see Xigua and other top Chinese players finally play in international tournaments? 8 invites, 2 Kor, 1 China, 1 SEA, 2 NA, 2 Eu? That could be exciting

Code S Ro16 and GSTL Finals conflict is unfortunate but it's probably fine. Lots of good Koreans don't make it to Code S R16 (like the other 16 Code S players) and GSTL Finals only keeps 2 teams from going to IPL3.

MLG invited some Koreans to Columbus and Anaheim. Dunno what happened to them tho
4 Global Online Qualifiers through Playhem - 8 players receive free flight and hotel, plus entry into the Championship Bracket!
Live 256 Man Double Elimination Qualifiers at the venue - top 16 enter the Championship Bracket!
That leaves 8 more spot for the Championship Bracket. Is it safe to assume that top 8 from last season will get in?
They said 8 invites.
And no I don't think so. CatsPajamas said they are inviting koreans.
But they will almost definitely invite white-ra/idra (season 1/2 winners).
The finals of IPL2 already revealed who will return for 3... unless they forgot or changed their minds...
Oh? I don't remember hearing that. What'd they say?
the "returning 16" from IPL2 could be pushed over to the next ONLINE event, and this offline event is seperate from their online series of events, thought they are calling it IPL3....
Live Event is so much better than an online, delayed tournament like IPL1 & 2 :D I realize this requires a lot more investment from your side but this is the way to go. Excellent move, don't forget to fix HD streams without lag for the 50k viewers (which don't have to be free, of course) ^_^
Two online tourneys to prove their mettle. Then a live tournament with a great setup, some invites, some qualifiers and an open bracket. All expense paid to the invites and those who qualify, as it should be.
Very well done, looking forward to hearing who the invites are!
Yawn. The SC2 scene is over saturated with so many big tournaments now. It is hard to get really excited anymore. I guess I will tune in though if the Koreans that qualify are good.

This is what makes this so exciting. You can bet the production quality here is going to be unrivaled. I really think this will redefine what a LAN event is.

I can't help but notice how professionally IPL is being run / built up either. I guess IGN really did know what they were getting into.
They're all supported by ads still right? I'll admit I couldn't get excited for a delayed tournament with all the other live events going on.

West coast getting the shaft? You just had MLG, NASL & Blizzcon will happen in the same month. Let us have a big tourney once a year.

A normal GSL has 100K prizepool. The super and opens had twice that much. You're confusing it for the first place prize.
______________
Well, IPL just got real. It will be seen at the same standing as other big leagues now.

Yeah, but MLG holds the majority of it's events on the east coast + IEM in NY. I don't see how 1 MLG (and none last year, only 1 this year), 1 NASL and an event that's extremely inaccessible to SC fans outweighs everything else.
Meh, it makes perfect sense to have more events on the east coast. Aside from California, population density is much lower on the west coast. It'll be harder to get a huge audience if you aren't going to be doing it in cali.
And as Cali is probably more expensive to run events, it makes sense to do them on the east coast.
So much competition for players between the organisations! IEM China 1-5th Octobre ~IPL 6th-9th~ IEM New York 13-16th Octobre MLG Orlando 14-16th Octobre
I hope you guys get good stream numbers due to being live and getting Koreans to finally play in your tournament now. Also I'm so happy a event is being held on the East Coast for once.

There hasn't been a single MLG event on the East Coast yet. (this year)

I'm expecting like groundbreaking stream numbers for this event. This event is still a month and a half away, and I'm sure this will spread like wildfire all across the eSports world! And Korean players too? That just adds to the hype. This event is going to blow EVERYTHING out of the waters, IGN/IPL is so amazing. I was waiting for the day that IGN decides to make a live tournament! ESPORTS.
Now this is better. Finally IGN seem to trying to make a statement they really needed to make. Their past two tournaments although excellently done were way too dull for what they could potentially have been. I'm excited more for the coming season .

Oddly familiar to your MLGs? That can only be a good thing - IPL is not planning on running 5-10 major events spread across the USA like MLG is currently doing. MLG does not have a monopoly on the format of invitees, championship play, and a massive open bracket - that is simply a logical way of running a large e-sports event for a game like SCII.
Anyway, does anyone happen to know the music used in the latter half of the intro video? It's a popular, old Italian song (I think) for dramatic short videos/ads/sequences/etc.

This is sick. In season 2 I always thought the month+ long delay took something away from it for me, but looks like IPL is stepping it up in a big way. Can't wait.
Would I be correct in assuming IdrA and WhiteRa will be two of the 8 "paid invites" being previous winners of the IPL seasons? I think that would be the most fair way, with others being players who have won majors in the last year such as MC, Nestea, MVP and HuK.
lol so true. EG hyped an announcement for an announcement when it wasn't even that big, then IPL blew them out of the water. So glad IPL chose today for this announcement.
I hope this next season I get a better overview. I lost track at times this current one. Some of that is obviously my fault, but not soley that. Hoping the IGN people do a bit better job of providing easily accessible information, schedules and overview.
I just hope that especially NASL and IGN are planning long-term. They are holding so many huge events in such a small period of time...it would be sad if we had to live without NASL and IPL in 2012.
:O a live esports event at caesars palace, how awesome is that! Wow, I love how IGN has slowly expanded from the very first IPL all the way to one of the biggest live events in Esports. Knowing the production quality they can pull off, this event is going to be rivaling the GSLs quality.
On August 17 2011 06:41 Ruscour wrote: So by 'Global', does this mean Korea & China & Australia and the other eleventy billion countries that couldn't participate in IPL1/2?
No. By global they mean not Australia and not Korea. Because IGN is racist and demands Australians stop killing Koalas for fun.
Smart move to for IGN to emphasize the free flight for the 8 invitees & 8 online qualifiers. They definately want to avoid the situation NASL ran into.
Well, WhiteRa is most likely one of the invitees, so I'm watching. The last two IPLs were nice as well, but this is just a whole new level. And if the stream is free like last time... this will be awesome.
Just when people are complaining about IPL being an online tournament with no live event, IPL starts a live event, as well as doubling the prize pool. Seriously guys stop being so awesome you're making the other leagues look bad
Holy shit, this is huuge. IPL rocks, I think they'll show NASL how to run live events on the first try. And with full travel expenses refunded, we could see some epic roster, can't wait.
Omg amazing move by IGN! I was only halfheartedly interested in IPL and IPL 2 due to it not being live and being a small prize pool. This live event, with the huge prize pool, with Koreans (I think they said Koreans would be in IPL3?) is like my dream tournament. I love you IGN.
Caeser's Palace?!?!?!?! Are you shitting me right now? This is incredible and should be amazing. IPL seems to be setting themselves up for a great disappointment if they can't pull through. Let's hope that won't be the case!

I think the people saying "Look IPL is paying for the Koreans' travel expenses!" as opposed to NASL should read the fine print. Technically, NASL offered much more money towards travel expenses as they offered it to more Koreans. Just saying.
However, I'm not in this IPL vs NASL thing. I'm actually IPL + NASL > everyone.
It's become clear that the way Koreans do business may be too different from the way sponsors want business to be done. Therefore, if esports is to go bigger, it needs to move away from Korea and towards the west.
The reason why I say IPL + NASL is because the relationship of healthy competition between them will make them both better than any GSL could ever be. Look. IPL is doing a live event. Look. NASL's production quality for Season 2 has gotten 50x better.
These two tournaments will continue to interact with each other, trying to one-up each other, and the result will be that they will both be something worth showing your friends who aren't in SC2.
I wish I could support both; right now I don't have the money for both, so I will probably support NASL to prove a point.
However, I hope BOTH succeed, and I think the end result of BOTH of them existing will be better than the end result of one tournament alone.
oh my god, you cannot have a 100k sc2 tourney in atlantic city -_- the whole prizemoney will stay in the casinos! didnt you watch HomeStoryCup III, where HuK lost some money with Poker
nah jk, awesome awesome event and 100k is an amazing prizepool, holy cow, seriously. unbelievable!
