StarCraft 2 Cherry MX Mechanical Keyboard Key Caps

tsangan United States19 Posts July 29 2011 16:45 GMT #1 I know some of you are aware of a site called geekhack.org where it's basically a whole lot of keyboard enthusiasts/gurus and man do they love modifying their keyboards. I've recently was bitten by this bug and unfortunately I missed out of their group buy for some awesome key caps (group buys are require as the manufacturer requires a minimum order). These key caps are meant for Cherry MX switches mechanical keyboards so regular membrane keyboards would not be able to take advantage of this. I've seen a thread on here showing of some of the SC2 ones that were made in that group buy link here I am extremely interested in this myself but will have to wait until the next group buy to possibly get them. While I was thinking about this some more, I thought it would be extremely awesome to make key caps for all the Protoss/Zerg/Terran units and buildings (after looking into it I don't think it's too realistic because of the work involve in making the SVG file for each unit so the goal is to make a Probe/Drone SCV) and then the user can just pluck out whichever their hot-key is and place them in such as this CS kit **At first I wanted it like the CS kit where the front would have the letters but then I remember some people rebind their hot-keys and also the work to do that is also much more lol So I went into research mode to look up the procedure with this and what I need in order to make this happen, after some time with Google this project might be impossible since there are requirements for these key cap designs such as: The insert-molding process requires certain minimum measures for the graphics to make sure the plastic can float properly. - Lines must be at least 0.2mm thick. - Gaps between lines must be 0.5mm thick. - Islands, no matter if they are the insert part or the key itself, must be at minimum 0.5mm in diameter. (Information found here) But as you can see from the following picture there were auctually adjustments made to the these SC symbols in order to fit the requirement to make these key caps possible So I do believe it's possible for this to happen but the time to make these SVG files would take quite some time especially even longer for someone with no experience in this or any image editing experience for that matter. Here I am now asking the community of TL to see if there is anyone interested in this and can make this happen? I understand there is a lot of work required, and to be honest after thinking about it I think a more realistic goal would be to make a Probe/Drone/SCV key cap instead. After these files are done we can look into a group buy and make this happen for anyone that is interested in this idea.

graNite Germany4434 Posts July 29 2011 17:13 GMT #6 The problem is that there are less different buttons you use in CS than in SC2, in SC2 you need Q for workers, marines, vikings and so on... (I use grid) A great nerd idea for CS, but I won't buy it ^^

Oproer Netherlands108 Posts July 29 2011 17:15 GMT #7 I have these keys already, except the Random one, since I don't play Random.. They are pretty fucking sweet.. It would be nice to have them with the Team Liquid horse or Dignitas logo as well next group buy. They are quite expensive though
