The US considers it "gambling", yet someone has won this championship two times, so obviously SKILL is the contributing factor here. But isn't luck of the draw a small part of it as well, similar to Starcraft where you might scout properly yet skill miss something important due to bad luck?
Would you say it's 95% skill 5% luck, or is luck more important? I'll repeat Day9's joke about this: "You don't go in for the final attack against your opponent to see they suddenly have a dozen broodlords and all you can say is 'That's Starcraft!' ¯\_(ツ)_/¯" Not even a good analogy. It's like finding out your opponent had a hidden expansion the whole time and they crush your attack Or you attack and you don't see them dropping your min lines while flanking your main army and get demolished. Not really, b/c until you get rivered in poker, you are actually that far ahead. If they have a hidden base or something, you're not really ahead at all. Poker takes skill, but luck has a far larger role in it than in starcraft. For example, I could never beat MC, but even against Doyle Brunson I could knock him out on a 2 outer.
Yeah really.
There are examples of people being super far ahead and losing it (e.g. Sen vs MC game 4).
I would agree that there is a greater amount of luck in poker but this quote is just foolishness:
"You don't go in for the final attack against your opponent to see they suddenly have a dozen broodlords and all you can say is 'That's Starcraft!' ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"
Also, because SC2 (and moreso bw) actually takes mechanical abilities to play whereas poker doesn't require any physical ability to play there's obviously a greater gradient there.

Above average is always very good.

I don't understand how poker players can read their opponent's hands like that, it is kinda insane :O

And average is nearly irrelevant, median says a lot more given the stacks repartition

You guys need to take some statistics courses lol, in events like these, the average stack is MUCH lower than the median stack.
Being at chip average will usually put you in the top 35-40% of chips, since its so heavily top skewed. Being above average is in a commanding position when you're up against some of the non-pro players and worse level players at this point.
