It’s been 3 weeks since GSL and GSTL started with new format. When planning the new format, I had to go through lot of consideration and I had lot of worries whether it would work out fine, but now I am happy to see everyone enjoying new GSL.
While watching other tournaments recently, I’ve noticed many people discussing how it would be if GSL held its final outside Korea.
Lot of people have made requests about it through Twitter and the time I went to MLG Columbus, I gained faith that holding GSL final outside Korea would be meaningful.
I hope GSL to become a festival for all e-sports fans around the globe. I don’t want an e-sports title like SC BW, which was isolated to Korea.
Korean gamers are competing with Korean gamers and despite frequent foreign tournaments, they are willing to fly over to compete. They are also very impressed and enjoying the support from foreign fans.
For these reasons I have decided to hold GSL final outside Korea and have prepared for it. The decision was not easy to make. It is first time and therefore a great challenge for us to send staff and produce and transmit from oversea. But it is a worthy challenge for GSL and something that must be done at some point.
As many of you know Blizzcon is held every year at Ahaheim and it is a biggest event for all those who love Blizzard’s games.
Yes, final for GSL Oct. will be held in Anaheim. You will be able to enjoy both Blizzcon events and GSL final.
I give thanks to our partner, Blizzard Entertainment for providing us help to hold GSL’s first oversea final. Blizzard has given great help towards GSL.. Blizzard is GOM’s best partner and will continue to bring great news to you.
I believe many of you are ready to enjoy the event. I’m taking all of feedbacks concerning GSL, so feel free to contact me if you have any ideas. I will do my best to fulfill them.
Also, I saw a post with discussion concerning my interview with TIG(ThisIsGame, Korean gaming media)in which I talked about “possibility of oversea GSL final”. I’ve read every single reply in the thread and TArujo made correct prediction about final at Blizzcon. As a reward, I’ll be giving him GSL Aug. Season ticket. If you let me know of your GOMTV.NET account via PM, I’ll present it to you.
Nice you got to post it again... Like I said in the last thread. I'm looking forward to this alot. I was hoping it would be in the US as I remember the announcement a month ago about there being an international finals. Hopefully it goes well and I'm also looking forward to the Korean netizen reactions.

Lucky guy, though it will be cool if you sent him a physical ticket with a unlock code in it, to make it more special.
Oh my god. This is awesome. Mr. Chae I have to sincerely thank you for going outside your comfort zone to make this happen, I cannot attend but this is the sort of thing that esports needs to continue to grow. I will have to buy this seasons GSL to continue to support your outstanding efforts.
this is so incredibly awesome, you have no idea mr chae. I'll be both at anaheim mlg AND blizzcon. I was expecting a fun time at blizzcon like last year where I got to meet fruitdealer and BoxeR, but this year, you just made it the best blizzcon ever (3 years running for me).
Do we need Blizzcon tickets to attend the GSL finals in Anaheim? Or will the GSL finals be a separate event where we can attend without Blizzcon tickets?
The big question is are the finals at blizzcon, or just in Anaheim? Tickets were sold out for blizzcon instantly, and in Korea I believe it's just open for anybody to attend. Hopefully you'll be having it where anybody can attend so we can give it the huge esports welcome it deserves!
There needs to be a separate way for people to watch the GSL finals live. Blizzcon tickets are so hard to get! And there already sold out. There would be sooooooooooo many starcraft fans that would show up to this GSL but they won't be able to get a ticket
I am so SO excited. I'm flying down. I don't care if I have to save for the next three fricken months and live off of sardines, I'm fucking flying down to Anahiem to watch the best of the best duke out for Starcraft supremacy.
Thank you Mr. Chae, for making GSL TRULY the global star league
Can you please consider selling seperate tickets just for the GSL finals?
While Blizzcon is already sold out i have my doubts of the crowd for the finals being as epic as a MLG crowd or even the NASL crowd since not everyone going to blizzcon is there for or interested in SC2. With separate tickets for the GSL finals you can guarantee a good, large, enthusiastic crowd of SC2 fans.
There's about three months to figure this out and plan so hopefully it will atleast be considered. If anything you could hold the finals towards the end of the last day of Blizzcon to keep prices reasonably low and to prevent anyone from getting the full Blizzcon experience without paying the full price.
blizzcon tends to sell out regardless, adding a GSL Final to the program makes me wonder how many people will actually be able to attend due to limited ticketing...
Also I'm a little sad for the finalists as well as their team members because their entire teams most likely won't be able to fly en masse to anaheim. (Although runner up already gets a fair amount of cash) Flying 10ish people across the pacific as a team can cost well over 10k. The winner won't get to immediately celebrate with all his closest friends and teammates
I have a feeling this is all Blizzard's doings. They want the best content possible at Blizzcon! This is terrific. BUT, now GSL won't be able to sell any more tickets for Blizzcon. Will Blizzcon become bigger? I am assuming GSL has thought this over and can accomidate finals into Blizzcon but can Blizzcon accomidate enough fans? Stay tuned!
People should keep in mind that it doesn't specifically say the final is held WITHIN Blizzcon. It's very possible that it is just being held nearby, during blizzcon. That would be better, at any rate
I was there and it was crazy. There was standing room only and the crowd was very much into it. The mics didn't seem to pick up a lot of the noise from the crowd. Can't to wait to see it again this year. This time I won't be leaving my seat. :3
i assume this means expensive tickets if blizzard is involved as a socal resident i really want to go to this but it might be too pricey with all factors concerned.

having team mates there as mental support doesn't really matter. although it would be great if they can fly out the team. it would be funny if GSL brings in the moms and shows everyone since the culture here is diff.
also, i think the convention center will be packed even with limited tickets.

the coolest thing would be making the closing ceremony the gsl finals.

Great news though...lets hope it is not just Blizzcon ticket holders though as it would be pretty lame given that Blizzcon sold out ages ago and this was not part of the initial program.
Man anaheim seems to be the place to go when it comes to esports in the west. MLG is coming up and being hosted there, Blizzcon is in anaheim, and now this!

This is what I was thinking. Maybe it's an event held alongside Blizzcon and not an event taking place at Blizzcon proper. Since it's a little ways off I'm sure there's a lot more information to come but if it's an event held within Blizzcon then it's a sad day for all of those hoping to actually attend since Blizzcon tickets sold out 5 minutes after they went on sale.
Yea as alot of other people said, this would be a pretty terrible crowd and it would suck for the people that live close and want to go there but cant because the tickets sell out all the time/so fast. If there is a different place or there is tickets specifically for the finals then i'd guess it'd be ok.
Blizzcon tickets have been sold out for a long time now. They sell a certain amount on 2 different days and usually sell out within minutes. This was back in may. Also, I wouldnt be able to afford tickets anyway... hopefully they wont require blizzcon tickets to go. If they dont, then I am gonna try and make the trip for sure.
Great to see GSL coming over here, but Blizzcon is notoriously overpriced to get into and will be packed to the gills with neck-bearded WoW fanatics. It simply wouldn't be worth the price to go, even if I physically could.
So are the events going to be held in the same venue/date with tickets for one granting access to the other by default? IE can only those with BlizzCon tickets see the GSL finals or are they two separate events?

Disneyland! Inside the castle at Fantasyland, where gg timings are always late.

maybe its time for SC2 fans to out grow WoW fans. Will 12,000,000 is way larger the SC2 fan base, but we have hope!
Cali gets everything!!!! Damn. Well this is still incredible news! Showing how much GSL realizes how much the foreigners love the Korean players and watching them.

You obviously weren't at Blizzcon last year. The crowd for Boxer vs FruitDealer was insane
But I understand people trying to downplay GSL Finals being at Blizzcon, I'd be doing the same if I didn't have a ticket already ;D
We’re pleased to announce that the Global Battle.net Invitational and GSL October Final are both set to take place live during BlizzCon Friday, October 21, 2011 and October 22, 2011. Top competitors from all over the world will take to the stage in front of a sold-out crowd and put their skills to the test for a combined prize pool of nearly $300,000 USD. Whether you’re attending BlizzCon in person or from the comfort of your own home, you’ll be able to catch all of the action and root for your favorite players.
Wow, this is really awesome. I'm am 100% behind GSL, my favorite tourney, and even if evil studios Kespa was going to make big sc2 splash, i'm backing GSL the whole way!
LOL watch this be the first Season of the GSL where its like MC vs Nestea, not like MC vs Someone who got lucky through the brackets. Or something one sided like that (Inca vs Nestea,)
well... MKP is a beast he just hit a hardcounter to his style in tvt's and 3-4 against nestea. But that would be funny
ouch... poor foreigners lol. Great from a entertainment standpoint but i feel for the foreigners lol. IdrA better bring his A game. HuK too.

There is the Honda Center home to the NHL's Ducks and Angel Stadium home to MLB's Angels. Not likely hosts but there are certainly larger venues (and even two 90000+ stadiums in the LA area).
This is kinda random.. Won't Korean fans feel like GOM has betrayed them? There are many tournaments in Europe and America and Korea only has the GSL. GOM should stick in Korea and build up a loyal fanbase to ward off competition from KeSPA if they are truly coming to SC2.

i think you are misunderstanding this, the MGL and GSL finals will be two separate events! the GSL are only holding their finals in the US as an exhibition of korean play. It will have no impact on who plays who in the MGL tourney
wow that is awesome news that gsl is going to travel im going to try to organise my trip to america to be at the same time . would love to see HuK in the final there too
Thanks for the information, Mr. Chae, and thanks so much for all that you do for the foreign community as well. Seriously, I can't believe how much you're willing to do to ensure that SC2 becomes massively successful and popular outside of Korea.
Now, I just need to find myself a convenient reason to head to Anaheim around October...
Guessing we'll get this in addition to Blizzard's tournament, like how they did with the BoxeR vs. Fruitdealer showmatch last time. Coupled with HotS announcements and the possibility of Day9 + Tastetosis triple cast.... :Q my body is not ready.
Just hope they get it together this time; the last blizzcon tournament was terrible. I have faith though.

I think he means the ones that scalpers put up on eBay.
So Anaheim gets MLG, NASL (close enough), GSL, and BlizzCon? On top of their t-shirt winter weather? I think I speak for everyone when I say fuck you Anaheim

At least you speak for me sir. Wouldn't matter if I would live even somewhere remotely close, but meh...
This is AWESOME. I fully predicated this would happen. Turn out is so much stronger in America and when it was first mentioned that a GSL event would be held overseas I knew GOM would piggyback off of either MLG or Blizzcon.
But this is also DISAPPOINTING. You know we have to fight like dogs with the World of Warcraft fans just to get tickets? And do you know how poorly Blizzcon tournaments are run? 2-3 hour delays between matches. I hope GOM plans on using it's own streaming technology and crew as the vast majority of us will be sadly watching from home... making this somewhat pointless.
I can guarantee you that if blizzard brings in a promotional truck just to rebroadcast the finals outside(60 ft+ widescreen), people will swarm to just watch the finals. It'd be freaking epic.
I live less than an hour away from Anaheim, but I won't get to watch Tastosis cast a spectacular awesome finals (hope) because I didn't buy a blizzcon ticket the 5 minutes they were available.
I am a very sad Panda =<
I really don't care much for Blizzcon, but I'd gladly shell out money for me and my girlfriend to go to a GSL Finals! Something tells me it'll stay as Blizzcon only though, because the logistics of setting up their own venue is probably too great for GSL, I just hope the next final they bring to the states is near me.
With the popularity of SC2 rising since last Blizzcon, I hope they put the GSL and Blizzcon Finals on the Main Stage. So many seats. Whenever I passed by the main SC2 stage when games were going seats tended to be full. I say skip the musical act, just have the GSL finals as the closing ceremonies. (Or after a shorter musical act).
Wait so, this is going to actually happen DURING Blizzcon, inside the convention center at Blizzcon?
To be honest, that seems really silly. I've been to Blizzcon before and it is a huge majority of WoW players. And considering how quickly tickets sell out, there won't be NEARLY as many SC2 fans as there could be. I'm hoping that the GSL finals are somehow not bottlenecked by Blizzcon tickets. It'd be a shame if it was.
Damn this is so nice for all those who can attend.
I am kinda jealous. Hopefully the finals are not underwhelming. But the Bnet invitational will be nice too. There they decided to nerf the Amulet, I wonder what they will nerf now haha
Anyone who has been to the previous Blizzcons should already know how well this will go. The energy in that hall is insane and extremely contagious. So the SC fanbase sets the bar, and it just draws in everyone until there are many THOUSANDS of people hanging on every move (even the WoW or D3 fans who may not know much about SC).
really awesome to hear. I definitely won't be able to attend it live (well i guess you never know) but still, it should be an amazing event. Thank you so much for everyone who is making this happen!
Meh, when I read "blizzcon" i immediately dropped all hope and crushed all excitement. "Blizzcon" is always going to be this far-off fantasy dream for me, with tickets being $200.
What is the point of holding it at blizzcon? Blizzcon tickets are already sold out before people even knew about this GSL thing. So it's not like they are earning any extra money.
If they are going to host an event without expecting profit, why not make it absolutely free (outside of blizzcon)? Just hold it in California, FREE OF CHARGE, and I guarantee it will fill stadiums. If you doubt this, compare to MLG's price and venue (Ohio, $20). Whilst I'm at it, let's have Taylor Swift do the opener. Maybe we can fill a whole football stadium.

I do feel bad that a lot of hardcore SC2 fans will miss out on this is if it is during Blizzcon. I know a GSL finals down here could fill up a hall on its own anyday and I feel bad that those people who would go might not have that opportunity this way.
You have to remember though, there is definitely some overlap for a lot of people. I know my brother is in a super top raiding guild in WoW, and when we go to Blizzcon he spends like 90%+ of his time watching SC2. It seems like a large part of his guild is the same way too, even outside Blizzcon (with GSL, MLG, etc).
On July 12 2011 14:20 OSM.OneManArmy wrote: Will the finals be free to watch (like will we have to buy tickets to go watch in the audience at the studio) or will we have to buy blizzcon tickets?
I'm GUESSING that you will be able to watch the GSL portion of BlizzCon through GOMTV.net (LQ stream if you watch free and HQ if you buy a GSL ticket), but if you want to watch all of BlizzCon you would have to buy an online BlizzCon ticket.
It is a great idea to expand sc2 fan base towards other blizzard gamers, if u are already interested in one of the company's creation why not try the other ones? Personally I've played all the games by blizzard in the last 10 years, which isn't that many ironically. I cannot wait for D3 to come out but until then I won't be missing a beat with the SC2 world.

and then I re-read it and its Blizzcon. Well my only thing with that is, I guess thats a good place to start, but you really aren't letting all the sc2 fans that would buy tickets to it, really see it. But I guess thats ok since this is your first time doing it outside Korea.

Lol free of charge... you know there is a limit to how many people can fit in a convention center... hence purchasing your spot in it. No one doubts Blizzard can fill a stadium if they make it free because 10,000+ tickets they sell were sold out in less than 5 minutes at $175. The problem is you get a stampede of Blizzard fans if such an event was free.
This is hugely disappointing. I'd love to go, but obviously Blizzcon sold out instantly months ago... would have bought a ticket if this had been known.

spoken for truth, if Mr. Chae really wants to see how successful this gsl event can be outside of korea, host it somewhere else other than that overpriced blizzcon
you can literally fill a stadium if its free providing if its a good finals matchup , like nestea vs mc

Gomtv has stated it will be the same dates as blizzcon in the convention center. It will not be a separate event
We better hope for some good finalists and some good games, because this is going to hit a really big cross-section. First, the foreign SC2 scene will tune in en masse with it in the PST timezone (though EU may suffer ). Second, the Korean scene will probably pay pretty close attention considering its a GSL final and not just another foreign tournament with some korean players. Third, all other Blizzcon viewers that focus on the WoW and Diablo news, both in person and online (and direct TV I guess).
Really hope this final breaks the GSL finals curse to show off SC2 at its peak excitement.
Damn, they need to separate Wow, Diablo and SC2. So many nerds playing other games that push the tickets to sold out in like 5 minutes. Now if I wanna go, it's impossible.

Great news to hear GOM is bringing their talents to the USA. Seems like California is slowly becoming a Starcraft hub as of late, with MLG coming up, NASL just ending, and now the GSL. Add in the fact that Blizzcon will top it all off, and you have some happy campers in Cali. I bet all of the competitors and commentators living there are loving their all-expenses paid trips to 30 minute from their house

I'm hoping that its not just for Blizzcon (Sold Out) ticket holders and they are going to sell separate tickets. If not its kinda funny how this GSL is going to be the closest one to me geographically speaking and yet its still just about as inaccessible as if i had to get a plane ticket to South Korea.
Can't complain to much tho as MLG Anaheim will be awesome!
I'm quoting a short piece I wrote yesterday in the announcement of the Korean players coming to MLG. It's about how an overseas GSL finals is plausible ("called") and what I believe to be one of the major benefits in doing so. It has to do with how the crowd reacts over here, the culture that withholds the Koreans from acting the same way and that by moving their finals here it forces them to watch how we do which hopefully starts a change.
On July 12 2011 03:38 legatus legionis wrote: Hype Hype,
Just wanted to chime in on something I found very interesting. It's from a couple pages back where people where speculation that it's plausible for GSL to hold their Final overseas one time. It took me a while to think it over because I found it to be wierd initially but there could actually be something valid there. Let me explain.
All the passionate fans, their friends and family coming out the MLG's and various events is truly amazing. The way they all enjoy themselves and interact with the games is a big part of what makes it so special to watch. The GSL just simply doesn't have this what so ever. Next GSL finals I recommend looking for the people that walk down the ails and almost give instructions to the crowd for them to make noise with the big flappy things.
As was briefly talked about on the first Live on Three episode aired after MLG Columbus, if I'm not mistaken. Mr Chae explained that it's because of a culture thing. Even if they wanted to scream and make noise, it would be very hard for them to actually do so because it would mean they have to overcome caring about the possible disturbance or nuisance it would give the people around them.
Someone mentioned earlier, and we will probably continue to see this, what benefit does an exchange program like this bring the GSL? Well, there are many sound ways to argue in favor of certain benefits. But we can't see how their viewership has changed since MLG.
What we can see is what their finals are like and in turn, they can see what our finals are like. What I would hope will come as a result of them spectating us is a change in their behaviour. To make it so they feel free to act on a fool, as Luda would say. And what better way to have them watch and change than by bringing the finals of their event here and making them.
Awesome news, didnt expect this to already happen in 2011^^
All the whiners: Seriously?^^ Even if it's at the sold out BlizzCon it's of course great for GOM, cuz they know that there will be tons of people, which will look pretty cool in Korean tv additionally it's way cheaper + much easier for them to do it within an already organized event (and I guess they dont have to pay blizzard any money to do this) etc.
So people, this is a huge first step (and actually a pretty good one, cuz like 30k people will be able to watch it) - stop whining =)
On July 12 2011 14:31 Mohdoo wrote: Wait so, this is going to actually happen DURING Blizzcon, inside the convention center at Blizzcon?
To be honest, that seems really silly. I've been to Blizzcon before and it is a huge majority of WoW players. And considering how quickly tickets sell out, there won't be NEARLY as many SC2 fans as there could be. I'm hoping that the GSL finals are somehow not bottlenecked by Blizzcon tickets. It'd be a shame if it was.
Wow, this is really cool to hear I suppose coming from WC3, I am used to the WoW players not giving half a shit about my RTS game at Blizzcon. I'm SO happy to hear that SC2 catches the attention of dedicated WoW players ^____^
This is awesome, but the only downside is that it is at Blizzcon, which is sold out and probably filled with WoW fans, thinning out the crowds. California is doable for me, but California+Blizzcon is not
So close.....yet so far...a shame being in CA doesn't matter when the distance from one end to the another is as long as it is across state for many others xD
On July 12 2011 15:24 lunchforthesky wrote: I also play WoW at a 'high' level, SC2 is extremely popular with the hardcore WoW crowd.
People are fooling themselves hard if they think that because it's at Blizzcon there's going to be no crowd. Should've seen the crowd at the SC2 Finals & the FD v Boxer showmatch last year.
It seems like GOM wants to strengthen their position as worldwide/foreign event while Kespa maintain Korean interest after they deal the contract with Blizzard about Sc2. Worse case that Sc2 has almost no interest in Korea so they preffer to do it overseas where there are much more fans.
Does this mean that if I purchase the October GSL season ticket I will still be able to watch it through GOM? Or will I have to watch it through blizcon? Forgive me if I missed this bit of information. I did look through the links and I can't find anything solid about it.
Lol, awesome. Both outside finals and giving away tickets. ^^ I wonder though when the finals will be held, if you hold it at prime time american time, it might not be watchable anymore from Korea.
well, at least we know it isnt costing GOMTV an arm and a leg to host this at blizzcon, in other words, its more sustainable for them. Of course, it sucks for the audience T_T but hey, with blizzard production crew around.....it could possibly look more awesome then a normal GSL finals
omigod....this has the potential to be amazing! as long as we have good players in the finals lol. hopefully after all that money spent setting it up we don't get another Nestea v Inca again
lol blizzcon sc2 2010 looks like a rave but yea anyone worried about the crowd for SC2... This is looking quite full and SC2 has gotten even more popular.

You KNOW Blizzard is gonna sexify the hell out of those finals :D
No problem with having a final at Blizzcon imo. GSL is the biggest and most popular Starcraft 2 league. Blizzard created Starcraft 2. Besides, all the other finals will return to Korea afterwards I'm sure
Nothing makes better finals than for the Koreans to be jet lagged. I guess it is who handles it better will succeed.
It's also a shame that the StarCraft 2 fans will be missing out on viewing it live as Blizzcon is a general Blizzard event with a large majority being World of Warcraft players and not interested in a game that is worlds apart. Hopefully it is not within Blizzcon itself but at a side event.
If GOMTV want crowd noises that bad, then fine. I however want the players to be in their best condition and fans to have the choice to go view it live.
Pretty incredible news, and It makes so much sense. You already got a huge convention center with which to host the finals in. Can't wait to see how it turns out :D
So how long will we have to wait to hear about the revamped Blizzard Cup? It would be a sensational tournament to coincide with GSL October Grand Final!
This doesn't seem like it'd be good for promoting GSL within korea, i mean korea is only an hour behind australia time wise and blizzcon is notoriously at horrible times.

won't this hurt the GSL in korea?
If they hold it at 6,7, or 8 at night in California, that's like 10-12 in the morning in Korea. Not terribly bad, not bad like GSL is for foreigners right now where I have to stay up from 3-5am to watch it.
Holding it in blizzcon without any way for us to attend if we didnt already have tickets is sad. Only fans who had $150 to drop and enough time to camp the website at a specific time could go.
Your crowd could be 10x what it is going to be if you just find a way to let outsiders in as well

They sell out in less than 2 seconds in the 2 sales batches (no, I'm not joking). The only way to get them after the 2 sales waves and Benefit Dinner tickets (all of these sales occurred in May and maybe early June) is to hope eBay/Craigslist are good to you and to pay a lot more than face value, or get lucky and find someone who has to cancel and sells their tickets for cheap.
I tweeted this at you earlier, Mr. Chae, but I'm posting it here: as a BlizzCon attendee, I am beyond amped for this. I can't believe I actually get to attend a GSL grand final in person without having to go to South Korea. When I saw this announcement today, I screamed like a little girl.

Yeah, I was there in person for this match as well as the finals (Genius vs Loner) and it was pretty amazing. The whole area was packed and it was tough to even get a seat for those games. The crowd's going to be pretty crazy for this one I think.
I am really hard pressed to see how this can fit in two days. Not the GSL finals itself but how it impacts Blizzcon Invitational. Expect to miss out on most of the games.
I wonder if it would be possible for blizzard to set up an outdoor viewing plaza for the GSL finals as well. You could easily get upwards of 5k viewers in addition to spreading a huge amount of awareness.

Its just the finals no? I don´t see how this will have a hard time fitting.
Hopefully they bring this coverage through GomTV and not Blizzcon's ish. Last thing I want to see is Blizzard taint a GSL finals. Hopefully they can be inspired by the map pool too. One can hope right?

That is gonna be so awesome, thank you for doing this Mr. Chae, I can't wait. Also I think it so cool that you give away a season ticket, for TArujo since he guessed correct. I hope that it will be a big succes, and I love that you wan't to spread e-Sports to the rest of the world - thank you from Denmark, this is gonna be epic.
I was there last year and you're missing the whole picture. First of all, those mics weren't picking up the crowd noise. The crowd was very loud in person. Secondly, the SC2 finals were just before the closing ceremony. Typically the closing ceremony is really hard to get seats for so people generally camp in the main hall for a few hours to save seats. They had screens on in the main hall so that people could watch the SC2 finals from there as well. Therefore, you have to take the crowd you see and multiply it by at least two, if not more. Plus, last year, they botched the tournament badly. Like MLG Dallas style. They were showing like one game every couple hours. When there's so much to do at the convention, that means people were not sitting in their seats for the whole time. If you put something like GSL Finals in its own timeslot not competing with anything else, then it's going to draw the vast majority of the convention and it will be ridiculously hugely attended. It would easily fill the main hall.
And, while there are a sizable number of WoW players that attend Blizzcon, I think after the year that SC2 has had, it will have even more of a following there. It should be pretty sick loud there.
Wow that's crazy stuff wish I lived near California, sounds like a huge treat to those that can make it so I'm sure they will have a sick time! I hope they use GOM's stream still and not Blizzcon's because those are fail in comparison, can't wait to see some great games.

What do you know ? Maybe it will be held the day after Blizzcon, with the Blizzcon buyers getting better seats. Un til you get Blizz's official press word on this, don't assume anything. It may be free like in Korea, who knows. I'm pretty sure it will be more than just a Korean GSL Finals. Relax!
Oh how i hope something like that happens. I wouldn't ever expect it to be free, but as long as it was priced reasonably i would pay to see those finals.
Now please please please please make it possible to buy a separate ticket only for GSL Finals!
There are lots of us who would LOVE to go, but did not manage to get a Blizzcon ticket as they always sell out in 2 minutes.
Also, most of the Blizzcon crowd is WoW people, who will have little interest in SC2. Allowing the real fans to buy separate tickets just for GSL finals would guarantee you a screaming, enthusiastic crowd!!

Most ppl there are blizz fanboyz, not only WoW fanboyz et BTW, i think a lot of WoW ppl have also huge interest in SC2, as a blizzard fanboy is at first a blizzard fanboy. Anyway, good point. Blizzcon is way too expansive and many ppl might not have time to buy the ticket.
yahooo =D Thanks GOM and Blizz!! xD this is the second thank of the week to both companies, I think they are really caring about us, this is just awesome, I should buy a GSL Oct. ticket =)
i live about 7 hours away and would not hesitate to make the drive to watch the GSL finals however tickets to blizzcon are already sold out so while its great news for people who already have their tickets its a huge bummer for people like me because theres no chance of getting a ticket now

I think it will be chepaer to purchase a GSL Oct ticket, rather than a Blizzcon virtual ticket unless you want to see the rest of the events going on a t blizzon.
Plus since GSL will be here people will actually have a chance to watch this live in the day time, instead of at 3am with one bloodshot eye and the other one closing
very risky by GOM to take a GSL finals overseas when SC2 isn't that popular in Korea yet... I guess the foreign market is just too attractive or important to pass up.

on another note, what happens if the finalists dont get their visas? i mean that wouldnt be the first time a GSL player missed a flight.
If i was a pro SC2 player in Korea at this point. With this and the whole MLG exchange program why would you not be getting your visa early just in case?
I mean huge things are happening and i'm sure no one wants another bomber incident.

Well GOM,you just made me buy a Blizzcon Virtual ticket so i can enjoy GSL finals live in HD.As soon as they are purchasable i will buy one.
Jesus Christ this will be so EPIC i will have to change my pants multiple times i guess.
Blizzcon this year will be the shit.HUGE things going on for SC2.GSL finals,HotS playable, some showmatches i guess, interviews with the developers about HotS i assume. :O

So excited, but I hope Starcraft doesn't look under represented at Blizzcon, last year it was more for the WoW fans if I remember correctly and that was when Starcraft was only 3 months old.
It'd look pretty bad for us if there's like 500 people watching the biggest series in Starcraft and 50,000 people gawking at some stupid helmet. They should have announced this before tickets went on sale, to make the GSL Finals to cornerstone of Blizzcon instead of Red Shirt Guy asking a question.

you will probably be able to watch this in HD if you have either a GSL premium or a blizzcon virtual ticket, tournaments have always had a free stream in blizzcon, only thing that the free stream doesnt cover are the panels where they discuss the game changes in "detail", don't worry about that, would be a pretty stupid move on both sides if a GSL season ticket wouldn't be able to watch the blizzcon finals

This really struck me. If the OP is being entirely truthful, as I believe he is, then I can't wait to see this unfold to its full extent.
I got a blizzcon ticket a few months back so that I could go watch the normal blizzcon tournament, but I never imagined I'd get to watch the GSL finals.
1) What is the point holding it at Blizzcon when only people with Blizzcon ticekt can attend which is hard to get by?
A : I imagine blizzcon ticekt is still cheaper than plane ticket to Korea. Sure, plane ticket is still easier to get if you have money but if you weren't planning to fly to Korea just for GSL final I don't think there is anything to complain. At the very least those living in NA can view it in their own time zone for a change.
2) Blizzcon is full of WOW nerds. What's the point having final at Blizzcon?
A : You would say this if you've not been to blizzcon last year. I've been there and even then(when SC2 and GSL was not as popular as now) there were tons of crowd watching and cheering the players and I daresay the reaction was better than any of our final. I say it's even better that there are lot of WOW/Diablo/WC3 fans. This provides opportunity for those who have not watched SC2 game before to see how awesome SC2 is. I'm a fan of all Blizzard games myself but SC2 is by far superior in terms of watching and esports. If one knows anything about entertainment they will like SC2 at blizzcon. I just hope we don't get another GSL final curse.
3) Wouldn't it be bad for Korean fans and scene if GSL final was held outside Korea?
A : I just don't see why holding GSL final outside Korea would hurt Koreans. So far they are even more hyped about it than any other finals we've held so far. It's GLOBAL Starcraft Leage, and not KSL. Most Korean SC2 fans also play WOW or WC3 and will watch blizzcon anyway. Holding a Korean based event at somewhere huge as Blizzcon also provides great publicity and adds weight to its prestige. We've been holding matches at unconvenient hour for most global fans and people still support it. Why would Koreans have any hard feeling because a single final was held not at their prime time?
"This is a small step for GSL, but a ginat leap for eSports". Stop worrying so much and support it.

Perfectly well stated, I'm SO excited for this even though I won't be able to attend it's still gonna be history in the making!.

I just hope we don't get another GSL final curse.

this man speaks the truth. it will definitely help Sc2 grow.
So I plan on buying the online stream coverage of Blizzcon, because I can't make it to Blizzcon that weekend, as it coincides with my sister's wedding. Is the GSL finals is going to be covered by this as well?

I think my issue, and many others, is that we... A) Did not know about this until after the tickets went on sale and B) Can no longer purchase tickets. While I do support this, I just wish that there was another means of seeing this GSL live without having a BlizzCon ticket.

Buy a Virtual Ticket and watch GSL finals live from home with your favorite beer/snacks whatever. Obviously not as EPIC as if you would be @ Blizzcon but better then nothing right?

Thank you very much John for the reassurance of the progress of Starcraft, but still I feel crushed to learn that this is paired with the Blizzcon tickets. I actually tried to get tickets originally for WoW and visit it with my girlfriend, but it sold out in literally less than 10 seconds.
My pessimist side nags me on how this is counter-productive, since the majority of WoW fans would be far more interested in Diablo 3, Titan and WoW. Basically making the interest pool of ticket holders who Passionately watch the GSL very low. On the flipside however, should those players be mildly interested and watch it (cause cmon, you get a practically historic event go on and it comes as an extra on your ticket, why wouldn't you?), we have the potential to snag more people in the name of E-sports and prove that we don't just cater to the starcraft fanatics.
As for personally, when I originally heard the new I was ready to get my passport and come down for the tournament all the way from Montreal. But being restricted because I didn't quickly acquire a ticket means there's little to no motive to even come down and potentially meet some of the great players I wanted to greet in person. I really wished this was a seperate event that fans could come see and blizzcon ticket holders and also participate. But knowing the sheer size of people on the show floor, it would be silly to sell more tickets to a tournament that will most likely be full already.
Anyways those are my thoughts. While I know my time has been delayed to watch the GSL in person, I definitely admire this amazing gesture GomTV is providing. Good luck and thank you!

I understand the reasons and all. And I do believe its a great way for starcraft II and GSL to get some publicity, but I'm still extremely heart broken.
I've had a season pass to every gsl event, and now, to learn that a GSL finals will be so close to me, and that I still can't go because I didn't get blizzcon tickets makes me very sad. D:
I just hope the finals are epic! It would be a real shame for all these people not interested in starcraft to try watching and see a 4-0 complete walkover.
At the same time though, I think it's a great idea, a lot of people will be able to see the best of the best! Does anyone know if a tournament like Blizzard had last year will also be played? Or is it just GSL finals now?

We're not really being pessimistic about it, just sad ^
And your second point was pretty good about the exposure of top talent to the other crowds.
Well I still have a blizzcon ticket for this year... wasnt amped about going solo tho. Hmm might go or might just ebay the ticket i guess. Seeing GSL finals would be cool but i plan on going to korea once i graduate for next summer as a graduation present to myself. hhmmm choices choices choices. If you know a group of people going who needs a single ticket pm me. (im not trying to sound shady/whatever i just have a ticket that i know a TL'er would love and i dont know where i could ask this without getting justifyable raged at by mods)
Blizzcon will be a fantastic event this year then, wonder what else theyll be doing yet!!! Hope a good final instead of the one sided ones weve had in the past!!!
Mr. Chae you are amazing! Thank you so much for trusting the foreign community and your incredible dedication to e-Sports! It means so much to us as fans, and we promise not to disappoint you or the players. Amazing news, and I will be glued to the GOM streams that weekend I am sure!

Fantastic attitude, and the work GSL is doing with the western scene is really inspiring.
That amount is insane. I know it's combined amount for both 2 tournaments, but.. still.

Actually it is for 3 tournaments, including WoW Arena.

I don't know, from the Blizzcon I went to and from what i've seen of others, there really are enough people packed into that convention center. More might be too much and make just being their uncomfortable, plus fire codes, etc...
Now the foundation has been laid for a huge splash in the community, make sure streams are good and don't die, and try to get some seperate GSL Finals tickets or something and this will be perfect.
At least what I can think of from the top of my head.

Good on GOM! I'm personally not a huge fan of spectating games, or the pro scene in general, but a move like this catches my attention, even if in my opinion it isn't all that special. I doubt kespa would ever consider doing something like that, which is just another reason (for at least me) to dislike them.
This is sooo awesome! I wish I could go to blizzcon. But probs to gom for doing this.
SC2 had huge potential to become the huge international e-sports games. And this is a step in the right direction for gom. Now they just need to find a better way for foreigners to get to play in GSL, so the teams dont need to set up a progamer house or something there.
