This week, I decided to fire up Brood War and play some single-player after some custom games with a friend and I was literally shocked as to how good the sound effects were compared to Starcraft 2.
I had honestly forgotten how unique every units sounds. Especially Zerg units and the sound effects for spells like stim, emp, lockdown etc.
Whenever I play starcraft 2 I find myself not paying attention to the sound and more-so on my mini-map and screen and would always find myself missing whenever my marines finished training from Barracks in conjunction with a Tank comes out of the factory because the sounds feel like they overlap each other.
This was not the case for when I played brood war, and I haven't played this game in years.
So my question is, What the heck happened to the Starcraft 2 Sound effects? I honestly can never distinguish between Zerg units besides in death and that is particularly when the roach dies.
Should Blizzard Tweek the sound effects in HotS or do you guys think the sound is fine as it is?

This was one of the big difference I noticed when I started playing SC2, I didn't realise how much I relied upon sound effects to help me macro, the only zerg sounds I can tell apart are the one when the Queen spawns and the one when the Spire finishes, contrast that with in BW where I can do a pretty good real life impression of every zerg unit I get really confused in game sometimes when I'm using Hydras, I can't hear their attack at all and their shooting animation looks really really similar to their death animation, needs more PEW PEW.
I would like them to make it more distrinct, I honestly cannot recall off the top of my head any sounds and it makes me a bit sad (except the 2 above), looking like an idiot at a LAN when you imitate the overlord each time you select it because you forgot that you weren't playing by yourself was one of the great aspects of BW.
Ya, pretty much everyone here who played BW will agree. The weak sound effects were a common complaint in the beta that was overshadowed by so many other things... and it likely won't be changed at this point. I remember Hydras were one of the biggest complaints.
I agree. Sounds in Broodwar were much more distinct and recognizable. Especially hydras and zerglings only make a soft plop sound when they attack or die, nothing like a swarm of Broodwar cracklings overrunning a base. I wouldn't mind having all the classic sound effects used if there is a SC2 equivalent. Also, I want the "we require more mineraaaahlzzz" sound from the beta back.
I can't wait till Starcraft 3 so everyone can chuck on their fucking Rose tinted glasses and bitch about how the new SCV noises weren't as funny as Starcraft 2, or how the roach was removed and it was the core unit about Z, or about how they made macro easier by updating the engine, or about how good Sc2's balance was and the pro's skill level in 2018 when sc3 comes out and everyone is playing well considering the game has being out for ~1 year and people are already whining about everything.

If you haven't heard Broodwar sounds before look at this video with a Zerg campaign mission, it is so great!
But I voted yes for sure, the sounds are so weak and boring in SC2 and it really makes it a crappier game to watch as a spectator AND as a player.
EDIT: If the video seems fast paced in relation to the actual mission it is because he skips a lot of the actual gameplay footage to show us the plot play out.
