Does that mean its pretty much impossible to break on to the scene and compete with the already established teams? The only way to "make it" is to get known enough to get acquired and receive a contract from one of the teams in power. Seems pretty much impossible to do it from scratch. Great post. It's amazing that with Kaki's success they couldn't get any better name sponsors. Its so difficult. These sorts of comments overestimate the value of being a really all-star player. Sure, it's important to be a good player, and even better if you can make top 8 in any major tournament/carry your team in clan wars. However, none of that means anything for sponsorship if it's all you do. IdrA has proven to be more consistent, harder working, and most would say a stronger player than KiWiKaKi, and even he has to do a ton of PR stuff. IdrA is constantly going on things like SotG, doing promotional videos like game analysis of his games from MLG, casts, performing interviews (which he's gotten a lot better at). KiWiKaKi does none of that, and doesn't appear to do a whole lot to gain a huge following.
bingo, agree with this completely.
Should be interesting I imagine complexity will get invited to more clan events now.

Can't wait for team quebec

You guys are overreacting to the reality of sponsor ships and eSports in general.
eSports is basically funded by advertising and marketing dollars, at least for the majority of teams and tournaments. All these sponsored players don't always expect the same things from every team due via Contract obligations, but players who are involved in marketing and branding themselves are really appreciated by their team owners despite what results think. Although in the end, Results make a player, doesn't mean someone who's extremely marketable (ie. CATZ and DESTINY) is a valuable asset to these eSports teams
I personally give congrats to catz and drewbie for giving into a better offer than what they had going on in root, the managers of coL have deep pockets and they send their team members to various events like E3 / PAX / CES, ETC, it really gives these guys more opportunities to practice starcraft and other things to look forward to besides trying to start up a team from scratch.
In order to be successful in eSports, you have to start with capital, I don't think ROOT started with anything besides a love for the game but they went a very long way, however stop hating on them for doing what's best for their living.
For everyone else hating on them for joining coL, you really have to look at it from ROOT's point of view because really all these BM nonsense is ridiculous.

In that case, you would have to fault me - I could go into the logistics of it, but the timeframe of what we were looking at and what we needed just didn't work out.
Any idiot can sit behind a monitor and say "To get sponsorship for anything, you have to reach out to businesses, find the decision makers, and then explain to them how you and your team can make them money. You have to offer them something they don't already have and, in return, they give you money and/or free stuff." Obviously those routes have been taken - It takes a lot more work, capital and time to really execute.
Edward said it best, quoting him for good measure, but general ESPORTS fans would be really surprised how often some of the most "mediocre" players end up getting sponsor ships due to LUCK or good self-marketing opposed to some good talented players/ladder all stars who are just looking for a break but don't ever try to reach out to the community. In the end, Community is everything.
I'd like to point out someone who's easily better than a lot of sponsored players at the moment. (former LGiNkA), iNkA is a probably the 2nd best unsponsored protoss behind KiWiKaKi at this point and he's a decorated BW pro. Since the fall of Laz Gaming, I don't think he's joined another team yet, but in reality all these teams currently have locked rosters and he's just waiting for an opportunity to show itself.

Kinda disappointed to see all the hate from the community. Catz, drewbie, and ed/sundevil, did the best they could. We were more than just a team, no one wanted to break up, that's why everyone stuck around for so long. Finding sponsors is part luck as well, and we had none in that area. It's unfortunate kiwi, slush, and fayth decided to go seperate ways, but we will be...rooting...for them none the less where ever they go. Like I said, we were more than just players on a team.
Drewbie was NOT bming kiwi and slush, they are very close friends of his, don't take it that way.

when i thought of root i tohguht of slush :\ and now that there not together anymore who else is gonna be my zerg hero with ROOT in front D;

When were the games vs Goody and is there somewhere to see them?

I dont know if this is really good or kinda bad.. What will Kiwi and slush end up doing, only time can tell

why do most of the Root members come on here and only focus on the haters and not the people who are still ROOTing for them

I always loved what root was and had accomplished as a team. I am a bit sad that it didn't work out in the long run, but I hope all your plans and hopes and dreams work out for all you guys!
Sadly, I must now follow players instead of a team! ;-) So much more work haha
GL HF all you guys, and see you in anaheim!

Sorry if i'm coming off a bit harsh but it was just kinda embarrassing. I still have lots of respect of the rest of the (old)ROOT dudes - but no respect at all for Drewbie anymore. He used to be one of my favorite Terrans being from Canada and all but ugh. I've said enough I think.

Aw man, its sad to see ROOT go.....one of my favorite teams out there. Congrats to complexity though, for acquiring those strong players. Kudos to you all!

Slush and kiwi are going to team Reign, a part of VT gaming

Keep in mind that even before the collapse of LG iNkA was formerly on EG's roster and as far as I'm aware still lives in Arizona with Machine and Idra. The rumors surrounding his departure from EG are not particularly flattering so I wouldn't say he's the best example of someone overlooked just because they don't do large amounts of PR.

Its great that they joined a bigger team, but I miss the grassROOT feeling they had before. Setting up a game house with eachother and having little funding. Such an amazing feat and a big ol nerd dream. Best wishes to the players!

Nice ! Grats to the ROOT guys for merging with a solid team. I wish you guys the best of luck.
