Hey all!
I like to do digital artwork as a hobby and I'm looking to improve. So I present to you a community art piece! The ultimate end goal is to produce a (hopefully) great piece of work. I will be submitting the end result to Blizzard's fan art section and hopefully it'll get featured there (and if's it really good...maybe they'll change Kerrigan's face a little)
Basically, I'll periodically post updates to the current Kerrigan painting I'm working on. I'll then wait around 1 hour between each drawing posting before posting a new one. During that time the community is free to chime in whenever. If there's something grossly wrong with the piece, don't be afraid to speak up. I'm a big boy-- I can take the criticism.
Initial sketch:

I started this in my blog, and I know some wanted me to draw alternative hair for Kerrigan. I doodled around a bit but nothing really worked because the way her hair is inherently slicked back due to the way it grows out of her zergy head. Here's an original 'photo' of kerrigan for reference (I think many people were asking me to kinda recapture this:

The problem was her zerg 'dreads' didn't really make good bangs. Made her look a bit like this:
![[image loading]](http://abagond.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/dakore09.jpg) Which while great, was not what we're looking for.
I then proceeded to add monochrome brown shading (nice warm, neutral color)

Then some lighting for drama (oooo shiny):

And here we are now with soem basic color overlays. I'll begin the direct paintover process soon (adding details and whatnot).

The main question now, is which HoTS Kerrigan to use as a main reference.
We have 2 choices:
Blizzcon banner Kerrigan:

In-game screens Kerrigan:

As you can see their costumes vary in color and slightly in form. The Blizzcon Kerrigan also lacks the two 'dread' antennae/hair bits. For note, I based my initial sketch from both references, but accidentally added heels. I decided they kinda worked, so I kept them there. But if the community doesn't like them, I'll figure out a way to get rid of them :p
EDIT: and a BIG thanks to teamliquid for the images in this thread. Invaluable reference pics for Abathur and Kerrigan.

I'd say use the ingame version of Kerrigan, but with a lighter skin tone imo that would make the best looking zerg kerrigan-that-also-looks-abit-like-the-old-one, if you get what I mean. Whilst both don't remind me of Kerrigan in the slightest, the one in on the banner really looks like a fat black woman to me. No offence intended to anyone who might take offence to that.

I like the one of the blizzcon banner better. I like your drawing so far, looking for the next update!
|
I like the heels, and I think you should go for the in-game Kerrigan. This digital painting looks AWESOME so far!

Hey, you could try doing an alt-art version with the red hair, please <3's

There seems to be mixed opinions on in-game vs. blizzcon kerrigan. The general consensus seems to be a lighter skin tone, so i'll start working on that.
Meanwhile, here's a poll for the suit.
@KimJongChill/solidbebe: I'll be sure to do that as an option after I finish up the skin tone!

Face!

Looks like the in-game suit is the favored option as of now!. At 12:30 PST I'll start on the suit based on whichever is favored.

On blizzcon site Kerrigan has longer hairs and it's looks less pineaple'ish.
Plus I like orange coloring more, blue doesnt fit to zergs. Orange is way better

And what the different between ingame and art suits?

Can't we have the brood war Kerrigan back >.> it looked much better to me.
|
i really like your painting! it's very good this far and i would recommend you to use the blizzcon-banner-kerrigan as a reference. but there is one point i don't like: the position of HER left arm (on the right side to avoid misunderstandings) maybe you could change it.
Abathur looks great! Kerrigan looks great too, good that you added heels ![](/mirror/smilies/puh2.gif)
what is this yellow thingy n abathurs arms?
|
Yea i think orange is definitely better, blue just doesn't feel right and reminds of Tron.
|
@Existor: The ingame suits appear to be a lighter gray and have some blue in them too. Additionally the glow from the armor is blue. The blizzcon + art on the sc2 community page is darker and has an orange glow.
Purely from my perspective, I feel that orange works better as well. I may combine the ingame suit with an orange glow...
EDIT: Yeah the left (our right) arm feels a little weird now. I was pondering putting some of the orange glow stuff in her hand that you can see on the blizzcon picture.
EDIT2: The shiny thing that Abathur is holding I have no idea of, I just think it looks cool :p
|
would be better, because Kerrigan always has something to do with her arms :D

Basic suit painting

Annnndd done with Kerrigan
I feel like her face needs work though...it's hard to get orange glowing eyes to really work.
|
Excellent work.
I'm glad you chose the orange glow for the suit, I also agree that it suits zergs better.
|
wow dude that's really good...you should think about being an artist
