This was 1 of my 3 submissions for the Team Liquid writers appeal (for lack of a better term), I decided to post it now instead of later as the longer time that passes since the match the less people will care about the awesomeness that ensued. The other submissions are not match reviews and can therefore be posted at anytime should TL want me to. In the mean time, you guys can decide whether this was any good. Will add pictures as soon as I get the opportunity to rewatch the match and take screenshots. Any criticisms of my writing would be greatly appreciated.

The following review of the Boxer vs Zenio games will have spoilers. Go watch the games, they were awesome. You have been warned. Why are you still reading this?

Boxer vs Zenio NASL match

            Maps

            Game 1: Backwater Gulch
            Game 2: Tal'darim Altar LE
            Game 3: MLG Metalopolis

Anywho, as always, I was very excited for this match up. Despite being a Toss at heart, TvZ is one of the most exciting matchups to watch, and any game that Boxer plays in will have me glued to the screen with my fanboy hat on. At first glance, I thought it might disappoint. An early pool with drones added to the rush only to arrive at Boxer’s base to find it walled in. This left Zenio to immediately GG which left Incontrol wondering whether anything that he hypes can possibly turn out the way he hopes. On the plus side, this was perhaps the funniest moment that he and Gretorp have had on screen so far. The Thumbs Down dance has yet to become a meme, but I have hope. What interested me about this game was Zenio’s thought process; he expected some sort of strangely positioned barracks from Boxer, which in turn would have allowed him to waltz right in and win an easy game. Boxer however was predictably unpredictable by doing the predictable, thus thwarting the oGs player.

iNcontrol's thoughts on that game.

Luckily game 2 was just what the casters had hoped for; some superb creativity from the Emperor, and some absolutely brilliant, focused, reliable play from Zenio.
Here is a peek at some of the abuse boxer was pulling off on the old version of Tal'darim, don't click the spoiler if you want to see it in the game (which despite the fact I keep telling you to you still haven't done):
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Boxer will stop at nothing to abuse map design to its fullest.
This is what makes for the best games, a player who is strategically good versus one who is simply playing at the top of their game, unyielding in every way. It is like thinking back to 2004 when Nada took over the perch of the greatest player in the world: through sheer numbers. I always did feel he should have played zerg. I won’t ruin some of the amazing map specific dropping that Boxer did, but in the end, Zenio’s 140+ zerglings defeated Boxer, so it went to a game 3.

With zerglings streaming in at all angles, there is only so much the tanks can do to hold.

In game 3 Boxer played a cocky two racks opening, in full view of Zenio’s overlord, which prompted Zenio to reraise by opening Hatch first. After the short micro battle, as soon as the marines pulled back to avoid falling prey to the morphing spine crawler, Zenio cancelled it, and went back to droning. The mind games of these players never stopped raising eyebrows. First Boxer opened exactly as Zenio had hoped he would have done in the first game, and then he continued on that route despite letting the zerg see it, only for Zenio to unflinchingly continue his economic opening, planning on defending the pressure using only drones. Then finally, having defended it with only minor damage, he canceled the spine, predicting that Boxer was pulling back entirely. Zenio has definitely got the minerals. The game continued to ramp up, with it ending in a very tense and then brutal (for one of the players) push. I haven’t seen one player’s food count plummet so drastically since before the patch to the archon toilet, but I have to admit, the suspense was killing me.

I am adding another spoiler tag here, just in case you still haven't watched it.
(Can you hear the frustration in my fingers as I type that? I can.)
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
A small step for Boxer's marines. A giant leap for green goo.

Good game to both players, and I can’t wait to watch more from them.
I would like to end with a shoutout to how amazing the NASL is, you guys get a bad rap, but that is because we can’t stand to see anything but perfection. I can’t wait for the years ahead when people talk of you two the way people talk of tastosis now, the quintessential duo of casters who make the NASL what it will become. Keep it up!

Gretorp would like to let you know, that he is sorry sir.

Edits: Adding photos and a few structural changes. I had great fun hearing the caster's go "ah-ah-Ah-AAh" each time i paused/unpaused in trying to get that second to last image.

Thanks to the NASL and Liquipedia for the images, although the fact that zenio's image wasn't to the same scale as Boxers one made me cry :D

I applaud your effort and respect the guts it takes to put your stuff out there. However, you have several typos, a number of run-on sentences, and a lot of incorrect/inconsistent use of punctuation – all of which make your work somewhat difficult to read. Anyway, keep working at it and best of luck to you.

Fair enough, i have reread it a couple of times, but i shall do so again shortly. Am currently writing an essay for my degree however, so i should probably finish that first. We all know how hard it is to detect errors in one's own writing.

The games can be watched here if you have subscribed to the NASL. If you haven't then you should. The original purpose of this thread was to help persuade people to sign up and see what have been some of my favourite games of starcraft 2 that have been played so far.

Actually, no.

When you're writing an application for a writing position, EVERYTHING matters. Typos are pretty high on this list.

Typos make something look unprofessional, which the OP wants to avoid.

That aside, I thought it was well-written - in fact I think this was better written than some of the recent TL recaps.

So, on the whole, well done. =)

(Also, if it helps, one typo is located in the sentence "Here is a peak of some of the abuse boxer was pulling off on the old version of Tal'darim,")

I agree entirely, i would like to avoid any typos at all. I think it is very important. I have changed peek now

Any others you see would be greatly appreciated. If i were to get the position i would obviously be very important to iron those out.

This left Zenio to immediately GG left Incontrol wondering
In my opinion should be one of the two:

This left Zenio to immediately GG. This left.....
This left Zenio to immediately GG, which in return left.......

And again:

Zenio has definitely got the minerals
Zenio has definitely mined more minerals.
(disregard above if you're saying he can afford to cancel it? which makes little to no sense because he had to have the minerals to start it, but if you did, be more clear on your thoughts(aka write down why you think this))

Or even better!
Zenio has pulled ahead with the minerals gained.

Anyway, apart from those little minor things, very well written article. I don't tune into the NASL due to their production flaws, but this definitely gave a lot of information, as well as nice timed screenshots.

I've really got to consider the NASL subscription. This is a great start. I hope to see more NASL reviews in this style and with the sweet choice of pics from the cast.
Do you really want chat channels? - CharlieMurphy: Is this op for or against the movement? Seems like the latter to me. Fucking retard. - IdrA: things might be easier for you if you assumed the opposite of what you think is true.

It is actually a pun in reference to the film Snatch in which having the minerals means being willing to show that you have what it takes to follow through with a bluff.

I enjoyed reading your post and found it interesting enough to make me go watch the matches. Good job promoting the community and on a personal note i didn't find reading the post difficult at all, your choice of words in the written medium does not lead me to believe that i have misinterpreted the idea which you where trying to convey.

Hey,

I really enjoyed reading your recap. If your looking for advices, I let here my suggestion :
* I had trouble understanding the organisation of your recap. I was kinda surprised no to find anything about game 3, and therefore I didn't understand that you were gonna treat the third one only. I think you should kinda use some sort of spatial organisation to explain this.
* Maybe you could format your text a little ? I think adding titles could also help. And puting more space between images and text, maybe center and reduce the images ?
* Hehe I was awaiting some kind of general conclusions about why the games were so good contrarely to other TvZ too :D but I couldn't find any .

Hope I might help !

Thanks, but i actually don't understand what you mean at all, all three games were written about, could you clarify?

Titles might well be a good idea, i'll keep that in mind for next time. as well as reducing the images if necessary. I did try to cut the images so that it was easy to see what i was trying to convey, but i'll make sure to make it as clear as possible.

That as another good point, which i'll keep in mind. I am trying to avoid rewriting any large parts of this as i would like to keep it in more or less the same state that i sent it off to the submissions people in. I will try to remember this for next time however, which i promise will be better!

That said, the review was meant to be about 70% hype and 30% analysis, as one of my other submissions were much more analytical. Still, i did need to say exactly why this one was so good.

Oh man, this review would be fantastic if it had just a tad bit more formatting.this review of the GSL Open Season 1 Grand Finals is the standard of nigh-excellence to me.

Noted that it is still only Group Play and not the Grand Finals in the NASL, but Zenio and the Emperor certainly deserve that measure of perfection, no? A few more tweaks and I think this article is well on its way there.

Well that review was written by someone far more skilled and experienced than me, but i will work on it. I could definitely do with some pictures of the players and the map list as used boesthius's post.

Hey Surili,

I mean I was expecting a review of all the 3 games ; but you're focusing on the 3rd one (which is not a bad idea at all, it's just that I thought given your introduction you would review all the 3 games equall). Well, it's true too that there's nothing to focus about on the first one since Zenio left so quickly ; but I'ld had liked to have some more details about the 2 nd one, since you give us a peak of the very good strategies that the Emperor did. By spatial organization, I meant something like a spatial trick to show us you're focusing on the game 3.

I'm sure next time it will be even more awesome .

I really like the hype aspect as well ! I really do love pre-hype threads that exists for example in
Broodwar like the
flamewheel article "Dial D for Death"
. I'm sure it's even possible to do post-hype game. It's always possible to ellaborate using your knowledges of others matches (for example : this game reflect the style of IMLosira, something like that) ; historical references (BW, modern strategy), or just unrelated stuff (cf FruitDealer's GSL # 1 final article posted above).

So I'm not against at all some kind of general hype-in conclusion !!!

There are both paragraphs and spacing between them sometimes in the form of pictures, could you be a bit more specific about what you don't like about how i have done it?

Fair enough, it is true that i cut the review of the second game a bit short, but i didn't want the review to drag on. Do you think i could get away with making the whole post longer? I know how short peoples TL:DR spans can be

As for more analysis, i would have to think about that more, after all i am not a terran or zerg player, so i wouldn't want to comment too much about that, and the aim of this is to have other people talking about the games. That said, i still think i should have tried to look a bit deeper into the games, but without control of the camera all the information i have the casters are currently looking at, so without being able to see the replay instead of the vod i am not sure how much more i could add.

I meant not especially analysis you know, but pure hype . You can write about the players , the game itself ... without especially analyzing in details the strategy but you know... I don't know, I think it's a matter of preferences. When the style is good, I really like long edits.

Thanks for the response, i will definitely try to stay on the hype side of things. Need to take a page out of iNcontrol's book on hyping. Maybe if i announce that i will be announcing that i will be doing more of these later it would help? :D

I will try to read more stuff by other people, as i have before, and they are of much better quality than mine. Got any favourites that you can link me?

Thanks so much, i will try to, maybe i could do a weekly review of a match i saw during the week, regardless of whether TL give me the post or not? Or maybe Bi-weekly? does bi weekly mean twice a week or every other week? i meant twice a week.

I love finding responses of people saying they liked it, so thanks

Great writeup! We need more of this, since there is no possibility in the world to watch all games from the pro leagues.

Re-formated much of it, adding photos of the players, and the map list.

I was very disappointed by Boxers play - yes, he is very creative and has very good Unit-Control, but c'mon, floating THAT many minerals as a ProGamer is IMHO a joke. I don't know what happened there, but even if Boxers Macro is definitely his weakness, those games were pretty embarrassing and I definitely think if he'd really work on his Macro (which basically just means focused training), he could be one of the very best players in the world.

It's not like SC2-Macro is that hard, so even as a bad SC:BW-Macro-Player that used to play on a very high level I'd expect him to do much better.

Good to get an opportunity to actually talk about the games. Which game are you referring to? I will re-watch them probably at some point, but in the tal'darim game he lost a lot of his production, and after that any player's money starts to get high. But what you say in general is true i think, and i would love to see him work on it more.

As for Zenio, he is somehow a player who in general i have just missed out on, but he was excellent in those games and i hope to see much more of him. I particularly would like to see his pvp style, style, i'll be checking out the vods for his other games in the NASL.

I also think that Boxer either performs really well or really badly, games aren't springing to mind right now, but whenever i sit down to watch him, i am either really disappointed or really hyped up about it, i am not talking about win/lose, because obviously he lost this series, but just in general. Makes me a little sad. Maybe it was the Hasuobs series? when he just lost big time and that was over. The mis-control (or more correctly lack of control by the watch tower on crevasse(?) may well have just been lag, but i seem to remember i wasn't overly impressed.

For clarity and structure, you should more clearly divide your write-up in game 1 , 2 and 3. On top of that, while having a two enlarged picturse of the NASL casters might be funny, it is nor relevant to the game itself. Instead of having two enlarged pictures of the NASL casters, use a small picture as a result after the game, you have more pictures of the NASL casters then the game itself. (Granted it is 2:1 but still,). If you want to get a dramatic effect going with the expressions of the NASL casters, use the spoiler tag:

E.G: , The game was so good that it made Incontrol go: ,(Enter spoilered picture, with a cursified message under the picture, such as, Incontrol approves). Because right now the pictures take half if not more then half the space on the article itself.

This actually isn't the case, i have 3 images of the games (1 for each game) and 2 of the casters, 1 because it was funny and the other because i was talking about the casters at the end.

Perhaps you didn't open the spoilers but there are screenshots of the games in there too, which i didn't want to ruin in case people hadn't seen them.

You are right that i should have had titles separating the games though.

Thanks for the input.

Nice write-up of the games. I really feel that you give a more concise overview of the games than some articles, which in my opinion is a good thing.

One thing I will mention is how your writing almost tries too hard to be enthusiastic; the almost unendingly relentless frequent use of fantastical adjectives might come across slightly wrong. (^_^)

Props go to you for the pictures though. I didn't at all feel they were irrelevant to the text and overall I thought it was well written, despite minor crap like lowercase 'i's.

Now write-up some protoss games haha. =D

Too enthusiastic. Nope, not buying it. No such thing. The capital I's thing is something I have developed from writing essays too often in word and open office, it capitalises them for me so I have never bothered. Hence why all the uncapitalised ones are from edits in such as the first paragraph or the picture comments.

I would love to do a protoss one next, maybe with more analysis, maybe not. Now the trouble becomes choosing a match to cast. I have some time free for the next few days so I think I will do one tonight. I am leaning towards another NASL one, because i love those guys, looking at the schedule, there is:

Morrow vs Moon, two players who i like a lot, Moon won me over at IEM and Morrow has been a beast forever. That said, ZvZ I am not overly up for casting so I think i will give it a miss.

Sheth vs TLO, hmmm, very tempting, these guys are great, Sheth was really cool on the daily recently as well as on State of the Game a couple of months back, and TLO, well it's TLO. Plus he is a part of Team Liquid. ZvT

Grubby vs Vibe, well I have a lot of hope for Grubby to do well in SC2, as I did follow the competitive scene of WC3 a little from time to time, but I know literally nothing about Vibe, I even had to check the NASL website just to see his race, which isn't something I have to do often in competitive Starcraft 2, making this match a PvZ.

Rainbow vs Kiwikaki, Rainbow as a player I am pretty ambivalent about, I haven't seen anything of his that makes him stand out, but Kiwikaki is known for his original strategies, and made it to the final of the IPL this week, so this could definitely turn into an entertaining game. PvT

Fenix vs Artosis, wow there are gonna be a lot of good matches going on tonight, Fenix, the first player I ever watched in Starcraft 2 (after David Kim on the battlereports) ^.^ who I have another special love for because he is from Peru, which I visited a few years back, up against a man with something to prove, the man, the myth, the legend, Artosis. PvT

Decisions, decisions. Well if anyone has any requests I'll do any game that you guys want, otherwise, I'll watch the games and choose one I liked. I would prefer to pick beforehand so I can make some predictions if possible though. Interestingly, all three of the non-mirror match ups are going on tonight, so should be fun

Edit: Dammit, I managed to catch all but 1 of the "i"s as I was typing this...

Solid job. Here are some corrections that jumped out at me:

"Anywho, as always, I was very excited for this match up." (about)

"An early pool with drones added to the rush only to arrive at Boxer’s base to find it walled in. This left Zenio to immediately GG which left Incontrol wondering whether anything that he hypes can possibly turn out the way he hopes." (This isn't written as well as the rest of the text)

"In game 3 Boxer played a cocky two racks opening, in full view of Zenio’s overlord, which prompted to Zenio reraise by opening Hatch first." (rax, Zenio to)

"The Thumb’s Down dance has yet to become a meme, but I have hope." (no apostrophe)

"Here is a peek of some of the abuse boxer was pulling off on the old version of Tal'darim" (at)

"I always did feel he should have played zerg." (felt)

"First Boxer opened exactly as Zenio had hoped he would have done in the first game, and then he continued on that route despite letting the zerg see it, only for Zenio to unflinchingly continue his economic opening, planning on defending the pressure using only drones." (had hoped he would; also sentence is a bit long)

I liked this article a lot and I just wanted to say thanks. I had forgotten how epic that game was, the baneling bombs freaking TWICE. Wow I was just stunned watching how well it was all executed especially how deliberate the second one was.

Great article, thanks for reminding me of a great series.

All true, thanks, I'd like to think that my grammar isn't that bad in general, but it is hard to proof read your own work.

Edit: actually I think that excited for is also correct, although it could be my south east england slang fooling me. Also, rax stands for Barracks, so both spellings are fine. ./shrug at changing that.

You are very welcome, and thank you for the praise, the series was excellent, and i hope i persuaded some extra people to buy NASL passes to go watch it. Which game should i review next?
