I don't get it. People break the news because it's the news and people want to hear. If Slasher gets wind of something, why wouldn't he publish it? People get to know and his website gets views. It's not like we all didn't spend half the day F5ing EG's crashed website when they put up the JD page anyway.

Sounds like Garfield is just mad that some of his thunder got stolen because his organization sucks at keeping a lid on inside info.

Alex is just ripping Slasher apart, this is hilarious.

There is more to "good for esports" than just "good for the teams". Slasher has been breaking this news on Gamespot. That's a huge site, that reaches a huge number of people. and has showed little interest in esports in the past. Just how happy are Gamespot with the page views Slasher's articles are getting? Pretty happy I would expect. Encouraging mainstream gaming sites like Gamespot to get further involved in esports can only be a good thing. Not to mention that Slasher has his own career to look out for. How many people can make a successful career out of esports journalism? That being possible is an important step forward too. Listening to Alex right now, he is basically saying "if it's not good for us then it's not good for esports". Sour grapes.

Journalists pissing people off by leaking information is nothing new. It's an arms race and if teams are losing then that's their problem and it's not Slasher's responsibility to back off for him. Don't expect the fans who just want to get the news to side against Slasher either.

He can post it on Gamespot after the team announces it. Other media outlets do it all the time.

Breaking the news first is a huge deal. He can write his article after and get a fraction of the views. And that's the basis for Alex's annoyance, that he isn't getting the biggest slice of the pie.

That doesn't support your "he's getting views for ESPORTS on Gamespot!" argument, though. If he was reaching some audience that otherwise wouldn't be seeing it, then it would not matter in the least if he waits until EG posts their announcement. He's not. He gets views from Reddit and TL who go to his Gamespot, people who would have gone to the team website instead.

The more successful his articles are, the more Gamespot is pleased with their investment, the more likely they will be to expand their eSports coverage, to further invest in it, to potentially to spread it to many who are unfamiliar with it. Slasher getting hugely successful eSports articles on huge gaming sites like Gamespot is fantastic for everyone involved in the industry. Even if Alex is too short sighted to see it.

There is no point trying to counter argue in ITG if they are so clearly EG biased. Of course Alex wouldn't want people to leak his team's info.. What is there even to discuss? You can't have a real discussion when 4/5 people there are blatantly in favor of one position because of their jobs..

This is a pretty interesting discussion so far. The problem is this issue has gotten personal for the people involved, so keeping it neutral is kind of hard.

I feel the "save esports train" is in full mode. Journalism doesnt needs to justify in front for anyone. Its journalism. It's not endangering any human beeing so its legit...

He is being a complete hypocrite by calling Slasher selfish. Alex is also only thinking of his own interests here. Does anyone think for a second that he would be getting this worked up about it if it weren't HIS information being leaked? And justifying it by resorting to the old "killing esports" as if that and his own interests are one and the same.

That's exactly what I was thinking. EGAlex is only concerned about the bottom line, just like anyone else who's making a living.

It seems that in spite of the preface by DJWheat, Slasher was set up pretty hardcore, though he's probably had many chances to prepare counterarguments.

Everyone on EG is operating on the basis that something needs to change, and Slasher isn't. All EGAlex can do is say why things would work better his way, but it ultimately puts Slasher on a leash.

Alex's jabs at Slasher's work is lower than I expected. Lol the "bridge is burnt". Another EG bullying--this time by the big boss.

Oh wow.. Burned bridge :S

Well if Alex actually offered an exclusive interview with JD and Slasher never got back to him, and instead leaked the news, then Slasher really fucked up imo.

Interesting debate on jounalism..

One thing that wasn't said, the value that a journalist does bring,is somewhat more unbiased reporting than press releases from the direct sources.

Slasher may be rough around the edges but his reporting is much less biased than most official information released by teams such as EG..

I have to say, I have a problem with Slasher's journalism. That's not to say I believe journalists should keep a tight lip because of organizations or people wanting to control their own PR, but I believe that journalists should, at the very least, have some integrity in making their own work quality.

A lot of Slasher's leaks/news releases are in the form of quick snippets or single line tweets with absolutely no context, no relevant information, no history, no back-story, or even anything that shows the slightest amount of research or care about the information he's been given.

In many ways, he's like that guy posting "First" on every single article, who cares more about what order he's in than writing/speaking about engaging, interesting content...and frankly, that's unacceptable for anyone in any kind of writing job.
Average means I'm better than half of you.

Well this is the game slasher plays. You can go on and leak everything you hear, you get attention this way, but when nobody else profits from this you lose your sources and your fucked earlier or later

I would agree with this. Slasher's answer was "I didn't need it, only wanted the news", so it sounds like that's what happened to me.

Journalists can get a lot of publicity by doing interviews, opinion pieces, and by doing actual work. Simply leaking news is the lowest thing a journalist can do.
