Ugh, I just want a show that talks about the game. Too much drama all the time in this community.

I think people tend to get a little angry on these podcasts. Mature conversations happen in a calm tone.

But I have a magical train of thought to follow. In traditional sports, this isn't as much of an issue because information is more tightly restricted and more legally protected. This implies that teams like EG should do a better job controlling this information and contractually prevent it from being disclosed.

However, the Esports industry is not big enough for that to happen. Teams do not have the finances to have a legal team monitoring and prosecuting people that break NDAs. EG cannot afford to legally protect this information (and other teams certainly can't either). If Starcraft was enormous like the NHL or NFL, people like Slasher wouldn't be able to break the news like he does. He can because Esports is small, and I think that is telling.

I think Journalists shouldn't be leaking things that are already BEING ANNOUNCED down the road. They are supposed to be providing information that the viewers can't access. In sports or international politics or in any other field. Sometimes it feels like he is directly cutting in line to steal viewers from teams. He is generating views by jumping the gun on announcing something that is already going to be announced. The viewer is still going to get the same information, but the views are going to slasher that would normally all go to the team. The content is paid for by organizations like the team, and slasher gets views for it a few days before the team would've.

However, if Slasher isn't doing it, someone else will. Slasher is not the real enemy here, and that should be kept in mind.

Apparently a lot of them, but in particular Alex seems pissed about Jaedong.

I love going online and some new video/announcement comes up and I go HOLY SHIT!!! When I read a rumour etc it takes away my excitement though. Didn't read the snute thread because of it. TotalBiscuits gstl video though was awesome and props to him, the organisation should be able to release the information in their own terms.

So I want to ask this to ITG, where are journalists (all, news, sports, e-sports, whatever) supposed to draw the line on information. Should Woodward and Bernstein said, well Nixon and his staff would probably not want this out there and it is their information on Watergate and their involvement. Is it good for a journalist to sit on news, or a transfer/trade. Do you send out whatever rumors you hear, do you do what Slasher does and (from what I've heard even from djWHEAT and iNcontroL) getting multiple sources, or do you just wait until the team, politician, player, company, person say it themselves?

A team union against Slasher? So teams say you will play by our rules or else we won't have our players, staff, etc talk with you? So we're heading toward news from the teams/companies only, no press. Because the press isn't allowed to do anything without the consent of the teams. Journalism (sports especially) needs to walk a fine line between working with teams because both sides need a healthy relationship, but also need to be able to report on things that the team might not like, for example a team with poor conditions/not paying their players.
And then.... Trumpets

Alex is just ripping Slasher apart, this is hilarious.

There is more to "good for esports" than just "good for the teams". Slasher has been breaking this news on Gamespot. That's a huge site, that reaches a huge number of people. and has showed little interest in esports in the past. Just how happy are Gamespot with the page views Slasher's articles are getting? Pretty happy I would expect. Encouraging mainstream gaming sites like Gamespot to get further involved in esports can only be a good thing. Not to mention that Slasher has his own career to look out for. How many people can make a successful career out of esports journalism? That being possible is an important step forward too. Listening to Alex right now, he is basically saying "if it's not good for us then it's not good for esports". Sour grapes.

Journalists pissing people off by leaking information is nothing new. It's an arms race and if teams are losing then that's their problem and it's not Slasher's responsibility to back off for him. Don't expect the fans who just want to get the news to side against Slasher either.

He can post it on Gamespot after the team announces it. Other media outlets do it all the time.

Breaking the news first is a huge deal. He can write his article after and get a fraction of the views. And that's the basis for Alex's annoyance, that he isn't getting the biggest slice of the pie.

That doesn't support your "he's getting views for ESPORTS on Gamespot!" argument, though. If he was reaching some audience that otherwise wouldn't be seeing it, then it would not matter in the least if he waits until EG posts their announcement. He's not. He gets views from Reddit and TL who go to his Gamespot, people who would have gone to the team website instead.

It didn't help EG. That's what he means. He is being completely self-centered here but calling Slasher the selfish one. Now threatening to ban his players from doing interviews with Slasher?

Holy shit I can't believe what I'm hearing. "Get Gamespot to pay for you to go to Korea and get the sloppy seconds". Yeah that would go down well.

If Slasher releases his information AFTER the official announcement, his "work" will not get much (if any) attention. His actions don't just benefit himself as Garfield suggested; It helps Gamespot, the website Slasher works for as well. Let's be honest here. How many people here would actually read Slasher's article or any other article for that matter talking about for example, Snute's move to Liquid AFTER Liquid has made their official announcement? Sure, if he provided a nice interview with Snute regarding his move, some people may read / watch about it. However, his work would get much more attention if he LEAKED the information before hand. It is in his and his employer's interest to do so. Is he hurting for instance TL by leaking the Snute information? Yes. But this is his job and it is in HIS AND GAMESPOT'S interest to do so. Much like it is in the interest of TL for Slasher to not do so.

This is why I don't bother to watch these SC2 talk pieces. More talking about drama than the game...

if you dont like the way slasher works, then show him by not reading his page. simple as that. I for one like hearing the top news, even if its just speculation. And I hope it wont change, since things like this keep me exciting for the scene.

But Slasher is being a little bitch about it. He has the nerve to bring in the Sports vs Esports journalism argument.. Nothing in actual sports gets leaked the teams give out the general information out AFTER teams announce things. Its something he doesn't understand.

YES your suppose to report stuff but do it AFTER like every other journalist does. Team Liquid reports stuff from other teams AFTER said team has announced something. Then writers go about writing about it. NOT this stupid bullshit of "oh I'm going to steal the fame BEFORE the team/player makes the announcement public".

Slasher stop being a fucking selfish child. Your excuses about being a journalist is a fucking joke and is making yourself and every journalist look bad. REPORT SHIT AFTER ITS BEEN ANNOUNCED BY SAID TEAM OR PLAYER LIKE EVERY OTHER GOD DAMN JOURNALIST IN REAL SPORTS IF YOU BRING UP THIS COMPARISON YOU FUCKING CHILD
