Yeah, this. He was either trolling or grossly misinformed, but, in case people couldn't figure it out on their own, literally everything he said was wrong. "Female" does not refer exclusively to biological sex, it encompasses both sex and gender. A trans woman would be offended if you said that she isn't "female" (and, of course, an FtM would be offended if you said he isn't "male.") Well, he was technically correct. Male/female is simply based on what chromosomes you have. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/femaleThe question of what people want to be called is different matter. Personally, I tend to like letting the dictionary be the arbitrator. Didnt hear the caller, but it is a matter of reality that the neurology of the brain has differences fundamentally from birth between male and female, interests, disposition etc-- it aint a cultural construct. Transgendered in that regard have brains that are neither male nor female. There just wired uniquely.

That quote's from a discussion with Christopher Hitchens about religious people being "offended" by atheistic/scientific arguments, not a blanket justification for whatever prejudices internet assholes want to get away with. Fry spent more than a decade struggling with his homosexuality, I think he'd be pretty goddamn sore if he heard about someone twisting his words into an excuse for intolerant behavior. Intolerant behavior? Using the pronoun attributed to someone's sex chromosomes isn't intolerant, it's fucking common sense. Yea, what transgenders go through is hard and they will face many obstacles on the way, but it just needs to be accepted that not everyone is going to refer to them as the preferred gender. Tolerance and equality are unquestionably deserving to all groups of people who don't harm others, but having your everyday, non-derogatory language dictated just to not offend someone? That's absurd and selfish to expect it. That's like being offended that you're referred to as a human if you believe you're a Giraffe. Yea, it's nice if people respect your unharmful lifestyle, but to expect it is mind- boggling. Bullshit. There is one and only one reason why you would ever refer to someone by the incorrect gender: because you choose to insult them. You may disagree with transgenderism, it may be contradictory to your beliefs, but this isn't the first time you've have to suck it up and and bite your tongue. As long as you're a person that gives a shit about being a decent human being, you do not go out of your way to disrespect an individual who has done nothing to deserve it.
If you care about being polite, you refer to someone as the correct gender. If you want to be an asshole, say whatever the hell you want, and live with the consequences.

You seriously just brought out the "soldiers die for our freedoms" card?
Really?
You want to be intolerant THAT much. You feel strongly enough about being a jerk that you have to play that card? Come on man. The person wants to be called female, call her female. What the fuck does it hurt you? It hurts you as much as you have to be polite and look out for someone else's feelings.
I mean...I'm actually kind of insulted right now. I have many friends in the armed forces, and I doubt any of them will say "Yeah, I went and fought in Iraq to defend some guy's ability to be technically correct and tell a transgender woman that she's a male, because FUCK YOU PENIS." Sure, you have the freedom to call someone anything you want, but it doesn't mean you have to be a jerk.

The point of the Fry/Hitchens paraphrase is that the phrase 'I'm offended' shouldn't be allowed to shut down discussion. It's commonly mistaken for a blanket defense of offensiveness, but that's pretty far from the original intent.

I agree. Just don't be an asshole to people; be nice. As weird as it may sound, I can't imagine anything transcending the idea of just being polite and decent to someone. :S. Because Soldiers in this country die for our right not to be?
