TLO is a huge fan favorite and will have a favorable bias. After watching the recently made tribute to WCG 2005 featuring Artosis, Day9, Tasteless, and others, and seeing them talk about the game analytically five years ago, it's clear that long time SC players have an advantage when talking about the game. It's a man(child)'s world. If you aren't dripping in those qualities most men seek (Soe) and a little more different (Asian, somewhat difficult to understand at first), suddenly you are the worst thing to happen to casting.
And yes Artosis and company have a huge advantage when they begin casting something like GSL, as they are so used to talking about the game anyways. This does make them better casters, for the most part, but it doesn't justify much of the ranting about Kelly. No one expected her to be as good as Tasteosis, but a little civility from the community should be expected. I don't need to hear that you have the right to complain about a service you pay for. That's a given. If you want to be heard as more than an angry mob, act like it.
The thing is that those long time players who have been analyzing the game for years ARE the best casters. They add a huge flavor to the game when listening. They know exactly what they are talking about and even if they are wrong they jump on that shit and make it right. (usually in a comedic snese) Besides the fact that she had the thick accent, she doesn't have the experience the other greats do. She's won a couple diamond league tournaments in SEA or whatever and has been a guest cast on a couple programs. That doesn't justify yourself. Tasteless, artosis, and day9 have been analyzing this game for years and can jump into any casting situation and make it so incredible for the viewers. Those are the kind of people we want, and if we're paying for the subscription, it's who we deserve to listen to.
I think the only reason it came on looking as an angry mob is because there were such a high amount of people who just didn't like her casting and so people are throwing the extrme sexist/racist haters with all the rest. if 80% of TL liked her and the rest were all racist then it wouldn't seem like an angry mob. It was the fact that like 70-80% of all viewers at first especially really just didn't like the casting.
Dont hate on all the haters, not all of us are bad =P

I just want to say that the comments in this thread are unbelievably ridiculous for both sides. I've never seen such passionate, baseless comments. Good work team, I've been thoroughly entertained.

Yeah I admire her poise and she clearly has potential.
But it's kinda sexist to be so protective of her feelings that you think any criticism of her casting is shameful. She's just not there yet. Not in English any way.

I have no problem with this especially with the added translation. No need to rush on a decision for a caster, cycle through a few and see how they handle it before making a decision.

Saying things like 'she can't help how she talks' is very insulting to other Singaporeans. English is the first language of this country, and you can bet any form of public speech here does not involve brueframe herrions. People can, and do, learn to articulate normally. Actors, debators, politicians, radio hosts etc here all use international-standard English and pronounce words clearly.
If someone has a job involving public speech and cannot articulate, that's not a cultural issue. It's their issue. Don't try to make this seem like Singapore is a country where English is a bizarre talent and any quality = good quality when it's the national language.
That said, I found a lot of other issues with her casting. Good job to her for getting out there and putting in the effort, but I'm not distraught at the change.
I wouldn't say she cannot help the way she talks, but you will have to agree that this kind of accent is widely spread in Malaysia and Singapore. So if you've talked this way for most of your life, changing it within a short amount of time is a difficult thing to do. Actually I think that accents are the hardest thing to lose when it comes to speaking English.
Of course if her accents does not fit SC2 commentary, she should not do it. But it should still be considered where she comes from.

I have no problem with the Code A casters, but I really hope they can find an Ex-Pro player to do analysis like Artosis. It's fine to have one guy do the color commentary, but you do need someone with in depth knowledge to really appreciate the games.

I have to admit that I'm on the side that's a bit relieved that she's not going to be commentating anymore. I'll be the first to admit that it's mostly because of superficial reasons such as her voice and accent, but those superficial reasons are actually a pretty important part of any entertainment job. While some people will argue that it wasn't "that bad", there's no reason to accept anything below good, particularly if you are a paying customer.
I think it's good that Gretech is trying out different casters, but it really would have been better for them to hold auditions and give casters more training before throwing them into the spotlight. Major events aren't really an ideal place for try-outs.

Kelly knew her own talent before going into this and probably had a good idea of how she was perceived. Consider it a learning experience and try to improve your intonation and pronunciation and try again.

Sad to see her go but the community's reaction was pretty clear; that would be pretty hard to carry on with.. Nice to see they are trying multiple avenues before sticking to one option; Doa was really impressive so hopefully the community reaction plays a part in his future as well

I liked Kelly. Considering the community reaction, I don't think GOM will have her back, but I am glad they tried her out and and glad that they are giving many different people a shot at casting.
Concerning the community reaction, I am with those who are embarrassed about how it all turned out. While there were many valid criticisms of her casting, many of the comments went beyond critical, often becoming personal and nasty. Not that I expect a whole lot from the SC community, especially when it comes to women, but the experience has left me rather disgusted and I have had trouble engaging with the community since then because of it.
I do hope that her comments regarding the reaction are true and that she will tough it out and grow from the experience, but I worry that the SC community has otherwise emotionally scarred her.
Thank you for casting, Kelly. I hope to see you improve and cast more in the future.

Of course you are correct in what you say there, but if you make international casting a large part of your life, you should be expected to put in effort. This isn't a 'short amount of time' situation because she's certainly not new to casting.
It's not the biggest issue her casting faces obviously, but it's a point for improvement and too many people completely gloss over it as a racial issue.

We need a hot chick with sweet voice, and know basic units in SC2. That's all I care, the other caster could be high master level, but we definitely need a hot chick. I vote for Torch's gf.

It's not like it's not justified, she got critique but wouldn't have any of it. She put herself in this situation by not listening to the community in the first place
