If the acronym even remotely looks like a word, people pronounce it as a word. LAAD (Low Altitude Air Defense), MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit), MEZ/FEZ/JEZ (missile/fighter/joint engagement zone) MASH, I-DOT, HARRP... Do I need to go on? In fact, many times people will go out of there way to make there acronym a readable word. Such as the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 AKA the USA PATRIOT Act.
This is also why in Scifi book, no ship is ever called the Alliance Star Ship X

All acronyms are pronounced as a word. SCUBA for example is an acronym. If you pronounce each individual letter (such as FBI or GSL) then it is not an acronym but an initialism.

NASL could be said either way, the fact it has a vowel as the second letter leads people to treat it like a word. However, the intention may be to use the expansion entirely, or to specifically say "N.A.S.L" whenever pronouncing it as an initialism. When it could go either way people will generally just follow the popular way.

Military acronyms are usually read out as a word for some reason. Others, unless they are specifically made to read well (like PATRIOT or ASEAN), are usually read letter letter.

Yeah, I'm getting pretty tired of all the folks complaining about pronouncing the acronym. When I've been thinking of it, I think N-A-S-L, so I think you guys are just silly. Just say it like you do GSL.
